Safe parking at premises. Great welcome at reception. Cosy room with all amenities. Lovely bar/lounge with wide choice of teas, coffees, cakes - perfect for afternoon tea. Dinner menu excellent and imaginative and food perfectly cooked and beautifully presented in very comfortable dining room. The fire alarm went off at about 6pm and we were all evacuated to the muster point in the car park. Staff were very professional and efficient in directing us to fire escapes and checking that all guests were accounted for. It turned out to be a false alarm but I would praise the staff very highly for the way they handled it and looked after us so efficiently. We had a wonderful night’s stay at the Golden Fleece and would certainly go back again if we were in the area.

We stayed at the Golden Fleece for 4 nights. The location can't be beat. Right at the center of the town, so easy walking distance to all the shops, pubs and James Herriot museum. Our spacious room faced the square and was very quiet. A fresh bottle of water was left each day, which was appreciated. All the staff that we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Parking for the hotel is available. Just be aware that there is no lift.

This is a nice hotel right in the middle of town. It is about two minutes from the James Herriot house and all the shops and restaurants. The only problem is there is no lift (elevator) and you will have to carry your own bags up the steep stairs to your room. (There are no rooms on the ground floor). The staff does not volunteer to help you with your bags, so be prepared to lug them up yourself. The breakfast was very nice (and they have a vegan option), plus there is a bar and restaurant on the premises. The parking is directly behind the property in a private lot. The staff were very friendly.

Shocking. Booked a standard double, nowhere does it say we will be in an annex on the carpark. Dirty rooms with stained carpets, tiny single room made into a double to shove guests in. Booked 5 months in advance to sing at the races and 100% won’t be returning. Grime in the shower that wiped off, dust on all the sides, cobwebs in the window and broken blinds. Absolutely filthy and had a wretched smell. Your website is misleading showing rooms with gorgeous fabrics. Didn’t even get to see the hotel because we were shoved out back. Not acceptable for the price charged. No rooms available to change us. Faulty hairdryer that fused when you plugged it in. Two plugs in the whole room! To top it off, customers who stayed the night before had left items in the wardrobe and behind the chair which shows the rooms are not cleaned daily. Very poor standard and not acceptable. Carpark is being used from 5pm by delivery drivers and a walkway for anyone going in to town. Even had a delivery happening under our window at 6am with the engine running. Basic, shabby rooms and a terrible terrible night sleep.

The main areas appeared clean, however, the bedroom blinds were shabby and in poor condition, it would look much better if they were replaced. some items were not cleaned i.e. the toilet roll holders, floor corners, reverse of the doors, lack of all important attention to detail, the dining room at the rear was the same, the wooden railings on the walls and the radiator tops were dusty and had not been hot cloth wiped for some time as there was build up of spalsh marks and dust. The wall light shades were in need of a good wash and the salt & pepper cruets were filthy, as I said just these attention to details would be beneficial.

Friendly receptionist. Bar staff did not engage at all. Sub standard room compared to previous stay. Bathroom was dirty and very cramped. Restaurant meal was poor. Stale bread, pureed veg passed as soup, rosti was raw, black pudding was mush. Staff spent the evening moaning about shifts, (was interesting, but not what you wanted to hear when eating). A better standard was expected for the price we paid.

Lovely comfortable room, although the bathroom was small. Comfortable bed, cleaned every day with complimentaries refreshed daily. Room could do with a bit of touching up. Was nice and warm. Amazing breakfast with lots of choice.

This property was just outstanding & very visually appealing. We were given a spacious, beautiful room and loved it. Beds were so comfortable. Vintage radio was a nice touch. Everything was clean and every detail was attended to. The location was right in the town square, so everything was walkable. We did need a taxi to get to & from the train station with luggage; otherwise, we walked. Breakfast in the dining room was great with plenty of selection & eggs to order. There isn't a lift, but even so, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Friendly, helpful staff too.

Unfortunately our room was far too hot, making our stay uncomfortable meaning we couldn’t sleep. The reason being, there were hot water pipes running through the bedroom and en-suite which were very hot 24 hours a day. A small fan was provided which was woefully inadequate to cope with the heat. We did ask to move rooms but were told there was no other room available and in any case all other rooms had hot water pipes running through too. Overall this problem spoiled our stay in the hotel.

Beautiful comfortable and stylish room in the Market place in the centre of Thirsk, a two nights stay for my wife's birthday, we could not fault this 4star hotel , and would certainly stay again if going to North Yorkshire and would recommend it for your stay.

Although we only chose a standard room we were surprised just how very small it was for the cost. It was akin to prices in London and especially since we had paid extra for our Labrador too we were tripping over each other and in the bathroom you actually had your arm touching the sink while you were at the toilet! That’s how small it was! We spent the whole evening having to shuffle out of each other’s way! Not ideal! Other than that the room was clean and placed in a news extension over the car park so not in the actual hotel at all. Not unpleasant at all but not what we were expecting! For the money spent you could get a lot more for your money elsewhere I feel.

Lovely hotel lovely food, but we were in room 2 so we heard a lot of noise from reception and bar area and squeaky floor boards from room above , we was woken everytime upstairs moved about, I know it’s a very old hotel but the squeaky floors really need to be sorted , otherwise lovely hotel

The room was so small, but the heating and water pipes were burning hot, which made our room like a sauna. We made the reception aware before we went to evening meal with friends, but were told that they did not have another room available and that it should cool down. However, the heat stayed so hot in the room and was very uncomfortable. On arrival at reception in the hotel around 1430, we explained we had parked our car in a parking space at the front of the hotel, the receptionist just said ‘you will have a parking ticket by now’! She did highlight there is a car park at the back of the hotel and directions, but she carried on talking to explain how to get to our room etc, meanwhile my wife went outside to make sure we didn’t get a parking ticket! I found all the staff were unhelpful and not willing to help.

The Golden Fleece was a one night stay in room 25 of Mews which had no natural light, that said the room was very comfortable. The dining experience was very good and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Check in staff not too helpful, not interested that iwas a lillle early basically told me to come back later there were no rooms available, without checking any recored. When i actually returned to check in the chap was pretty helpful but pressures selling of evening meal put me off dining in, On checking out reception male refused to issue me a receipt. when checking expedia no ability to get an invoice. Generally not a good front desk experience

Rooms were small but very well furnished and good value for money, very clean and the bed was comfy. Hotel is in a great location, especially for the races. Staff were very friendly. There was no receptionist on our arrival, a note advised us to see the bar staff, but they were extremely busy, so this wasn't ideal.

Reception was excellent, professional and prompt. Breakfast dining room staff warm, friendly, welcoming and efficient breakfast good. We were allocated room 23 in the mews the wall tiles near the tap end of the bath and the wall would benefit from having HG mould remover used on them, other than that room was adequate we have previously stayed in the hotel so are ware of the quality of rooms in the main building. We reserved a table for a bar meal upon our arrival for 18:15, table was clearly marked with time and name, we sat at out table prior to the agreed time, about 15minutes later a party of approximately ten guests arrived at another table, I had booked in at the bar and was told someone would see to me in a few minutes. The party of ten were seen to immediately up to three staff involved in their service, an hour later 19:15 we had still received no service so went elsewhere for a meal. I readily accept hospitality has issues with staffing but cannot accept that a party of guests arrived after us and were dealt with immediately whilst we were completely ignored, it did not help that this was my wife’s 60th birthday. I raised the matter with the assistant manager who apologised citing new staff and that the other guests had pre-ordered their food.

I cannot fault the property or the food; however, the staff were not attentive, and the overall level of customer service did not reflect what I would expect from a hotel of this standard. I reported a flickering light in the bathroom of my room, and the receptionist informed me that nothing could be done until the next guest arrived. This left me feeling unimportant compared with future guests, and it made it difficult to get ready the following morning. Additionally, the restaurant staff spoke very loudly, as though they were in the kitchen rather than in front of guests. When I approached a member of staff with a question, she told me that her colleague would be with me shortly instead of assisting me herself. All I wanted to ask was whether the hollandaise sauce contained cream. She eventually returned to explain their process of taking drink orders before food orders, but the interaction did not feel guest-focused or accommodating. Overall the staff are not friendly and not accomodating.

The hotel was good overall. 2 things that let it down, First was the service provided by the staff, they would benefit from some good customer service training. The second was the cost and portion size of the food in the restaurant. Although the quality of the food was good the cost for the size of the portion was too high.

The building was needing a little attention, as a tired looking. Shower could be bigger. We had a evening meal which was fantastic. Breakfast was excellent but a bit costly.
