Stayed 1 night

My wife and I arrived late on a Sunday evening. We had booked the 2+1 bed room above the pub. We had a warm, friendly greeting in the bar. However…the room wasn’t worn, it was decrepit and extremely uninviting (for example, the shower over the bath was dribbling and couldn’t be turned off, the bath stained and green from an apparent tap leak, the shaver light broken with a dirty, ripped off switch cord – and there was no heating, so presumably no hot water). When we complained, the staff disclosed that the heating had been broken for two days, which we had not been warned about. They offered a small, portable fan heater, but it was December, and cold, so we said that we would leave (my wife was ill). They checked to see if there was a room available across the street, and we were ushered to a room that was in complete contrast. This was warm, modern and well equipped (even a nice Nespresso machine). However, we were told that the pub had stopped serving food altogether. I do not know when and if the (three) rooms above the pub will be renovated. The sign in the modern room across the road (one of four) is marked “The Royal”, and the wifi code also suggests that brand. Although the staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful (Maz and Max), the lovely Arts and Crafts wallpaper shown in the photographs had been painted over, and, as mentioned, there was no food available at all. Things seem to have changed, so get written confirmation of exactly what is on offer beforehand!

A clean and comfortable place to stay for the night. Rather late check-in, and early check-out, to accommodate the owners, who do not live on the premises. Breakfast was not included but we were given a good recommendation. Staff friendly and helpful and a very reasonable price.

Bedroom very small . Bathroom size adequate but sink did not drain well and toilet had weak, inadequate flush. Had to access room by narrow steep staircase via the garden. Garden sounds good but just area of outside tables for the smokers. Breakfast was served at restaurant opposite The Royal. Breakfast was good. Wish we had stayed there.
