The Red Lion

We often stay at The Red Lion. The staff are friendly and helpful . The rooms are always clean and the beds comfy . Breakfast is delicious with a lot of choice. It’s good to have the option of having lunch or the evening meal at the hotel.

Fantastic little gem of a place. Beautiful setting and rustic vibes with a friendly and hospitable welcome! Cant rate Dave the chef highly enough! The food was top tier and nothing was too much trouble! Thanks for a very enjoyable stay! Claire and Marc

Amazingly large and typically quaint old coaching inn under new and energetic management. We stayed because of proximity to Althorp House. Stand out feature is the food at typical pub prices but far from typical. It was superb and makes it a destination in itself. Such a pleasant change to eat real home cooking and not some chilled and reheated offering. Full English breakfast included in room rate and also superb.

Lovely pub with friendly staff. Room was delightful, although I wish I'd read the description better as didn't realise the bath meant no shower, also a bit of a climb if you want the kingsize bed. Bed was comfy and thankful for the bottles of water provided and great coffee bags. Food in the evening was excellent, a few things weren't on the menu due to a delivery not arriving, but it didn't matter as what we had was delicious. Only disappointing thing was the continental breakfast. Hard, cold mini croissant and mini pan au chocolat; grated cheddar, instead of gouda or an equivalent; garlic butter provided for my toast and jam! Asked for the manager to email me but have yet to hear from them.

This place is amazing! The food was incredible! Highly recommended!

We had the most incredible weekend at The Red Lion. The staff is very friendly and attentive, their restaurant is 10/10, and the rooms are stunning. The village is very quiet and peaceful, with lovely little streets you can walk down on, but you truly won't need to go anywhere as they have everything you need at the hotel. If you can squeeze in a Sunday Roast, take full advantage of it.

I travel very frequently so don’t normally take the time to write reviews, but have to give special mention for The Red Lion. A lovely warm welcome, cracking food (pie was amazing, as was breakfast) and comfortable rooms. All in a beautiful old building and village with lots of character. Priced very reasonably too and good location off the M1. I’m sure I’ll be back to stay again soon. Thank you.

Excellent location, beautiful village location within driving distance of the Althorp Estate. Well equipped room with free standing bath. Excellent dining choices. Highly recommend the Full English Breakfast. Excellent service from all the staff.

Ozan, and all other staff members were excellent. Rooms are lovely, good choice of drinks, and welcoming atmosphere. Both breakfast and evening meals were superb. Well located to explore a lovely rural area with many nice villages and country walks.

Quiet, clean and comfortable.

Room 1 was nice (room with bathtub) although some attention needed to cleaning as there were cobwebs and hoovering not the best as there were bits on the floor. Worst part was breakfast service! I was told that breakfast opens at 8, I was downstairs at 8, the room was locked, lights off and no-one was there. At 0810 a girl drove into the carpark and was clearly running late, I asked her what’s happening about breakfast as I have to leave soon. She told me she wont be long, at 0820 she opened up the restaurant and I told her it was too late as I had to leave at 0830. Terrible!! I called the manager who said he would investigate and give me a refund for breakfast - still had no feedback and no refund either.

On arrival it seemed a nice country pub, however, on opening the door to room 1 I was confronted by a steep twisting staircase on which I had to sit to lock the door. Up in the room I found it to be clean and spacious but noted the ceiling sloping diagonally into the walls. In the toilet I banged my head when using the wash basin. The bath which was outside in the main room separated by a plastic panel, was a fashionable but totally impractical free standing type with a hand held shower. The sloping ceiling prevented anyone standing up to use the shower. The bed was comfortable but why oh why does anyone put cushions on a bed. They're just in the way and end up on the floor. I didn't use the restaurant but breakfast options were imaginative and very nice. If I had been staying for more than the 1 night I would have requested a change of room.

Our room was lovely, well equipped and comfortable. The hospitality tray was very good as were the toiletries and towels. The paintwork was a little shabby around the windows, which were old but inkeeping with the age of the building. If we were in the area again, we would not hesitate to book again.

Charged for drinks we did not have (my fault for not checking the itemised bill - easily rectified), large cobwebs in the bathroom and shower tray desperately needs resealing to avoid further water damage. Room 7

The room was very nicely decorated, comfortable, and clean. I liked the little touches including a card, biscuits, and proper milk (even though I don’t drink it). The downside is that I didn’t sleep well as the doors downstairs were very noisy (banging shut and squeaking) at 6am in the morning. I was really excited that the hotel price included a cooked breakfast and I was told when I checked in that breakfast was 8 - 10:30am. However when I went for breakfast I was told it didn’t start until 8:30 which is when the chef was due to arrive. For that reason this hotel is not suitable for my business stays unfortunately.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food in the pub was lovely. The room was up a very steep, restricted height staircase which we didn’t expect. The bath is in the bedroom, with very poor water pressure so the shower attachment didn’t work.

If the full time one is half as good the hotel should be a success as it is quiet and charming. Slightly off the M1 if you are travelling like we were but actually a pleasant break from the motorway mayhem. Excellent place. The room was lovely, everything you would expect - comfy bed, fluffy towels, complimentary shampoo/conditioner. Stairs up to the room are narrow and steep so not for anyone who is unable to navigate that. The bath was amazing. In room tv worked well, tea coffee and hot chocolate provided. No fridge in room so only UHT milk, but that was expected. Only negative was that the room was quite cold - the electric heater doesn't pump out much heat and it's a single glazed window. However, for the price it was excellent. Breakfast was a simple continental, nice coffee.

Quirky room, typical uneven floors for an old building, exposed beams, nice character. Double bed was quite small, but comfortable. Full english breakfast was really good !

Wifi didn't work at all in my room which massively impacted my evening work plans. Not recommended for business travel. Very bright light outside my bedroom (the pub sign) so thicker curtains or blinds would have helped. Very annoying automatic light in bathroom that stays on for ages after you've used it - really irritating during the night.

Our room was lovely. Nicely decorated and thankfully a fan was provided as it was fairly warm. It was a little small but great for one night. The pub was nice with a great beer garden which looked out onto fields. The food was excellent. The service wasnt poor but could be improved...a smile would be nice and maybe a goodbye and have a safe journey. Other than that it was ideal for a night.

Had a lovely stay for 2 nights at the Red Lion. The owners and the team and extremely friendly and helpful and added to the enjoyment of our stay. The breakfast each day was brilliant, with lots of choices to suit everyone. The room was nice and we all found the beds very comfortable. The location is in a really nice, peaceful and quaint little village, which is really nice to walk around and look at the historic buildings and lots of thatched roofed cottages.

I booked the hotel because it was close to my course location and had excellent food reviews. However, just after 5pm, as I finished my course and was looking forward to a meal, I received a call from the hotel informing me that the kitchen was closed due to staff shortages. This was highly disappointing since the main reason for choosing this hotel was its food. Upon arrival, I was further disappointed to learn that no cooked breakfasts were available, only a newly introduced continental breakfast. Additionally, there were some unsettling occurrences in my room, which made me feel uncomfortable, leading me to leave for home that evening. When I spoke with the manager, I felt ridiculed for my reason for leaving. As someone who has traveled the world for the past 20 years, I am not prone to leaving hotels for trivial reasons. This experience was highly unusual and unsettling. I requested a refund based on my dissatisfaction with the food situation but was only offered a refund for the difference between a continental breakfast and a cooked breakfast. I was told that if I had booked my stay based on the food, I should have reserved a table in advance. In this instance, the customer is not considered right, which is regrettable. I would not recommend this hotel.

The landlord / manager Chris was fantastic . Very friendly and helpful and what an asset to the establishment he is . Will return when we are in the area . The rooms comfy bed and great selection of teas and coffee in the room. Also liked that fact milk in a bottle not pods . Pub - lovely meal and wine ! And great breakfast included . Tks again

The Red Lion was "going under new ownership" upon our arrival. We were the first customers. The facility was historic and quaint. The food was good although it was obvious things were just getting going. I felt safe and it was nice to be in a lovely English village for the evening. If the full time one is half as good the hotel should be a success as it is quiet and charming.
