Great stay. Quiet end of the high street and short walk to the shopping and restaurant. Really smart hotel with a 5 star feel. Nice, Small and intimate. Private parking to the rear of the hotel. Would highly recommend.

A lot of money has obviously been spent on the hotel - to it's benefit, albeit it is somewhat quirky in places. Nevertheless, a very comfortable hotel, very handily placed for the centre of Colchester and surprisingly good value when you consider breakfast, wifi and parking are included.

This is a great hotel. Upgraded to a lovely small suite with an amazing bathroom. Very comfortable beds. Breakfasts were super quality and delicious, although the breakfast tables are not dressed with a cloth and the old sticky scarred leatherette tabletops were a surprising lapse. We pre-requested through the app ‘no feathers’ in the pillows - this was missed, but corrected next morning. Finally, parking is not well signposted (suggest put Foresters Arms in satnav)

Fab hotel in Colchester. Nearly perfect, but no USB ports in rooms which can easily be addressed. Restaurant is excellent and staff overall is very helpful. Lift available for the disabled.

Extremely pleased with our stay here. Right from the start the receptionist warmly welcomed us and our check in was a breeze. The room was well furnished, comfortable bed and well appointed bathroom. The bar and dining room were very comfortable and the food excellent. Great location close to the centre of town

I often found the bar un-manned. I either wanted a drink, to pay and leave, but often there wasn't someone there so I had to wait. My room didn't have a water container for the coffee machine and there's a very strange hallway connecting the building and the rooms which is COLD.

This was my third time back at this hotel and unfortunately it feels like things are not moving in the right direction. We stayed in one of the largest suites and found hairs in the bathroom, the sink tap leaked, we didn’t have enough towels and the shower heads were positioned in a way that soaked us upon turning on and the rest of the bathroom (it’s the small things but I expect better). My husband and I were staying with our two year old and even though our room was over £300 a night they still required an additional £15 crib rental charge which is terrible service. Check in took around 15 minutes (again for a 4* hotel I’d expect it to be more efficient) and there was no one to help us with bags (again family with 2 year old and I was 7 months pregnant). Breakfast (included) was really good & location is super easy to walk into town or spend some time relaxing in the nearby castle park. Overall this stay was a disappointment for the price paid.

This hotel is very run down in all aspects. I would not recommend it. Room is not clean, phone hardly works dusty. Window curtains do not close. Did not have room service.

The greeting staff were very informative and pleasant. They were able to answer any questions we had for our stay. Unfortunately this didn’t carry through to the bar staff who ignored us when we were waiting to be served and then finally when we were, we seemed to be an inconvenience to them, we left and took our evening customs elsewhere and only used the room to stay in. The room was average; we found dead insects in the curtains. The bathroom improved our stay and was very comfortable. Overall, I’d like to see an improvement in the bar staff and the cleanliness of the rooms improved.

We did not think this Hotel warrented 4 stars. We were required to make a £50 credit card provisional deposit to cover any possible damage to room but no documents with terms or conditions, or indication of how any claim against our deposit could be verified. No evidence of condition was agreed at outset. Breakfast arrangements were farcical. Usually certain foods are laid out for guests to take such as fruit juice cereals etc and tea and coffee is ordered so guests can eat whist waiting for the cooked breakfast. Here, one day there was no juice out. Coffee was provided but only enough for one small cup. One morning tea leaves emerged from the teapot which held teabags, possibley because it had not been cleaned properly from an earlier use. Staff seem have had no training. They did not take notes and on an adjoining table they forgot what had been ordered. I asked for toast, one day one I had two slices which was fine, the next day one slice of barely toasted, which was sent back and 2 the next day. The waiters were alway polite and friendy but it seemed there was no system or training. Complimentry water was provided on day 1 only . A half used bottle was left the next morning and glasses of tap water were left so the glasses had not been cleaned.Tea and coffee was in the room but in multiples of 3 ie 3 milks and 3 coffee pods. The set dinner menu was limited for a three night stay, so we went elsewhere. Red wine served cold. Most disapointing stay

Stayed at GreyFriars for our Anniversary as it was conveniently located to the restaurant we were visiting. We couldn’t fault the hotel or the service we received. Upon checking in the lovely lady in reception told us that we had been upgraded to a junior suite. The room was beautifully furnished and elegant with plenty of space. Little extras, such as Nespresso machine and complementary coffee pods as well as mini fridge with drinks was a pleasant addition. The only slight improvement would be better lighting due to the windows being small for the size of the room. This would have made getting ready easier. Breakfast was faultless and the service was excellent. The staff were friendly and polite which made our stay all the better. We will definitely be back.

Our room was lovely - the bed was comfortable and inviting. The bathroom was massive, with walk in shower and a fabulous bath. We loved the use of complimentary dressing gowns and an iron and ironing board. The mini bar with five or six free drinks, plus the usual tea and coffee facilities, were all most welcome. Everything in the hotel was spotlessly clean. Staff were, without exception, friendly, helpful and professional. The classic Afternoon Tea was wonderful. Breakfast was also good and included in our overnight stay. A lovely treat for 24 hours!

The room was clean, tidy and beautifully decorated. Which enhanced the luxuriousness of the standard room.

Great hotel. Room was lovely, bed very comfy. There was air on which was easy to control and very welcome. Bathroom was fantastic with a large deep bath, double shower and double sink. There was a complimentary bar which was good. breakfast was really good with a great choice and as much of anything as you wanted, all waiter service. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Great hotel to stay in in Colchester with that added luxury.

A large suite with separate bedroom and bathroom, both of a very generous size. This was offered as an upgrade which was a pleasant surprise. Staff most attentive and food and service in the restaurant was excellent. Highly recommended.

Liked large quiet room, outside seating area, lift, soft carpet, comfortable bed, nice shower. Didn't like poor lighting in bathroom by washbasin and toilet.

I would have given a higher score but there were a couple issues on my two stays. First time, A/C in the room was very weak, we talked to the front desk but there was nothing they could do. The actual room was great, plenty of room. The second stay, four days later, they put in such a small room we had to ask to be moved, which they did, that room was not a lot bigger but at least the bed was not a.double like the first room. . The hotel has many different types and sizes of rooms, it would be nice to actually select te room number that you require. My only other comment is that their pricing structure does not seem to match room sizes. I like this hotel but I will have to iron out a few kinks before my next reservation. Maybe using their website for reservations might be a better option.

Room was supposed to have king size bed but came with double. Air conditioning did not work and as we were on the top floor it was far too hot to sleep.

Very nice hotel, room however was small and in stairwell area with noise from other guests coming up or going down and opening door into main bedroom area, noise from ground floor (staff) again traveled up the stairwell to my room. Apart from the noise a very nice hotel which should be a higher star rating. I would stay again but not in room 21

Mixed up on the booking I tried to explain the situation but receptionist was very rude.. Same receptionist was very rude in the morning when I asked about my invoice But hotel & breakfast breakfast staff are faultless…

From the time we checked in to when we left, the service was first class....can we call out Katein the dining room for special mention. She was a brilliant server and an asset to the Hotel

The staff were very helpful from the moment I arrived. I needed to book an additional night and thought that might mean a different room for two nights as Expedia said they couldn’t do at their end. They were very accommodating and gave me a room upgrade which was lovely. They carried my luggage to my room. Breakfast was amazing. Servers were friendly. The front desk agent arranged transportation for me when I left. A very pleasant stay.

Second stay here so can’t be that bad I guess. The hotel lacks atmosphere and the staff are efficient but lack warmth. Room was great and clean. Ate out in the evening as restaraunt lacks any atmosphere with very strange seating arrangement. Similar at breakfast and just one lady to serve every table so pretty slow affair though food was great.

Great staff, lovely room and ideal to explore Colchester

If you go to Colchester and you want a hotel that is centrally with ideal parking and a little bit above the rest,Greyfriars is for you.

The location close to Castle Park was super convenient where we attended an open concert.

This is a complete package, everything in the room from enough sockets, to furniture, to bathroom all high standard. City location, lovely garden area, and high standard restaurant and quiet bar. Short step from the castle.

This is a great hotel for a short stay in Colchester. A very good breakfast, large rooms, and the location is great if you want to explore Colchester (right by the castle and park).

They stop serving food too early, and I ordered a Caesar salad and it was just inedible because it was smothered and it tasted very fishy!! But lovely staff

Friendly and helpful staff, excellent food. Quiet area, within easy walk to Castle, park and shops.

This is a good hotel, well run with good food. The only thing they could improve on is the information on their restaurant. It is Egon Ronay recomended but only the table d'hôte menu (excellent but limited) and bar menu is available Monday to Thursday. A full a là carte menu is available at the weekend. I was told by different staff that the restaurant was closed Monday & Tuesday (untrue) fully open (untrue) and, correctly, open all week but the full a là carte menu only available at the weekend. The hotel is well positioned with its own car park.

Room was lovely bright and clean, the lady on Reception was lovely, we are in the restaurant which was excellent. The only downside was the breakfast which wasn’t very good.
