The Castle Hotel

The hotel is very well staffed and very well situated for public transport. Because I have orthopedic challenges, I found the lack of a lift to be disappointing, but that has more to do with me than with the hotel.

Very friendly helpful staff. Good breakfast. Unfortunately, I had a pokey little room with plywood on the walls, with a tiny bathroom. I could hear people talking in the next room. They advertise free on site parking. This is a blatant lie. They have no parking at the hotel. Most on street parking is paid or limited to 1 hour free.

Very clean and comfortable room. Friendly and welcoming staff and lovely continental breakfast included in price. Plenty of on-street parking near the hotel and within walking disrance to.the main centre. Good value for money. Our only complaint was that the restaurant was not serving food in the evening as the chef was away. One of the reasons we had chosen the hotel was that it had a restaurant, and food choices nearby were limited unless walking some distance. Other than that, we really enjoyed our stay. Thank you

It’s basically a pub, opposite railway station, offering a basic continental breakfast, packaged cereal etc. I went instead to the Thistle-Do-Me in nearby Walkergate for a delicious inexpensive breakfast. The only time I stayed for dinner there was none available in absence of chef. I was alone in room for three and found storage inadequate and found the wi-fi too weak to use unless I went out on the landing. Older clientele but mostly fit hikers with small cases/backpacks who could negotiate the steep stairs. Heating was on but via a timer. Shower fine. Excellent access to trains and buses, hiking trails, castle and river walks along with good restaurants and shops. Great town to stay made up for average accommodation.

Clean room, good service and breakfast. WiFi service was patchy.

When I arrived I discovered that hotels.com had mistakenly mentioned parking on site but there was none - I had to pay £7 to park in the station carpark. Then when I saw the bedroom I was disappointed by the size of the room and the size of the hand basin.

One night stay with breakfast. Full cooked breakfast was delicious and a huge portion. Bed was very comfortable. Situated at front of hotel we did not hear the trains. We were not happy with the need to use the key fob and the knob to unlock the room to leave from the inside. We found the method awkward, the mechanism didn’t often engage first time and we would have hated to have had to use it in the need for a rapid escape. The ‘free on site parking’ was actually the street outside a small section of which didn’t have restrictions, a misleading description in my view.

Clean rooms stay here lots very conveniently situated 2 mins from the railway station. Quiet reasonably priced bar for food and drink. Staff all good and polite.

Payed for 2 single bed rooms, when arrived there were no windows in the rooms just a skylight. Rooms didn't look clean . Checked out after 5 minutes. Friendly receptionist but couldn't get hold of manager Joanne when asked for a refund. Phoned a couple of times after we got home couldn't get her then either, then was told she was going on holidays for a week. Managed to get a £50 voucher from Expedia. Very poor, bad experience. Felt so bad for my mum as this was a birthday present .

First of all, the staff were all hreat. The hotel room was an overpriced fire trap and very basic. The hotel was locked up and dark, bar closed too!, at 9:45 on a Saturday. Both mornings at breakfast, the first voffee cup i picked up hadn't been washed properly. I would not stay there again!

Hotel is very clean, reasonably priced and the breakfast is good. Handy for the town centre and the historic walls for a walk. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Stayed a few times now for work and always look to stay here when working in the area.

The staff were excellent nothing was a bother. Room spotless but really cold. One of the staff brought a fan heater to help speed up heating the room

The property was clean and tidy . After the first day the room had not been attended to . No clean towels , shower gel and shampoo . When making the reception aware she said normally you inform them when this is needed . The following day i informed the maid what was required and it was carried out . She politely appologised .

Staff were really pleasant. Room had a large bathroom ( no 5 ) and very clean, would recommend it and will return in the future

Very pleasant welcome on arrival and given very spacious room for a single traveller with very large bathroom. Room comfortable and clean. Cooked breakfast was extra, but very nice indeed.

Firstly, focusing on the positives, the staff were incredibly friendly and professional, making the interactive experience wonderful. The room was immaculate and the bar area really lovely. I had 2 issues which spoiled the stay. Firstly, being in room 3 meant I was overlooking the main busy road which was noisy all night. I didn't sleep at all, nor did my adult son; definitely the worst night sleep I've ever had in a hotel. At breakfast, I was initially impressed with the full English and it tasted really nice. Finding a long blonde hair with brown tips in my breakfast and a piece of plastic in my coffee totally spoiled the experience. It's such a shame as it wasn't a cheap hotel and the hair situation was really gross. Thankfully it didn't get into my mouth!

The room was fine, just the shower. It was one of those you had to run around to get wet. Useless.

The single rooms are not as advertised, the photos on Expedia are not what you get. The room was literally smaller than a prison cell, the bathroom almost impossible to get into. No window, just a skylight. Wi-Fi never worked from the room

I was travelling with my sister, so booked a Triple room so that we could share, but have separate beds. Contacted the hotel via Hotels.com a few days ahead to ask about check-in, stating the specific room I had booked - a triple - but had no reply. The next I heard from them was that they’d taken payment. Only when I emailed the hotel direct did I have a response, but no mention was made regarding any issue with the room. My sister checked in slightly before me & unloaded - into a very small double room. At no point had the change in room been communicated, so I had to flag it with the front desk when I arrived slightly before 7pm. The hotel had overbooked the triple rooms but either no-one had noticed, or bothered to communicate it to me, despite charging me the triple room price. The lady on the desk was very apologetic and refunded me the price of the 2 cooked breakfasts I’d paid for (continental-only is included in the room rate) so the overcharge was lessened, but I would rather have had better communication or the room I paid for! It appeared that refunding food was all she was able to do in the system. All that aside, the rooms are clean and comfortable, breakfast very nice and staff very friendly. But bookings and communication via third-party platforms need improving. Overbooking more expensive rooms is really not on!

The staff were 100and 50 percent absolutely fantastic. Nothing was a problem. I had Visa trouble and they could not do enough for me.

Sehr gut gelegenes Hotel, gleich neben dem Bahnhof. Herziges und sauberes Zimmer und Bad. Das Bett ist sehr bequem. Es hat viele Haken und Kleiderbügel, was sehr praktisch ist. Die Dusche funktioniert sehr gut und es fliesst sehr schnell heisses Wasser. Im Bad hat es genügend Ablagefläche und eine kleine Heizung, worüber ich froh war. Ich habe 1 Mal Abendessen im dazugehörigen Pub gegessen, was lecker war. Am Morgen gibts kontinentales selbstbedienungs Frühstück. Ich blieb 2 Nächte und das Zimmer wurde nicht gemacht, war aber zu Beginn gut aufgefüllt mit Tee, Kaffee und Toilettenpapier, so dass dies kein Problem war. Die ganze Woche vor meiner Ankunft versuchte ich das Hotel, per Mail zu erreichen, weil meine Ankunft ausserhalb der Check-in-zeiten war. Erst nach mehreren Versuchen nach 1 Woche, kurz vor dem Verzweifeln erhielt ich endlich eine Antwort. Wie kann es sein, dass ein Hotel seine Mails so schlecht beantwortet? Der ganze Aufenthalt war dadurch etwas getrübt, was schade ist.

Charming place with a very nice and helpful check in staff! Overall, room was decent and clean; although bed was not too comfortable. Excellent location to train station and walking distance to restaurants and shopping. Adorable little town.

Travelled by train so very handy position also walkable into town centre but away from the noise, also easy walk to the riverside. Room was comfortable and spotlessly clean with everthing you could need. Breakast very nice and staff very friendly and helpful.

Manageress excellent,room good.The hotel has been redecorated,bar area good.Only complaints is the food.Had evening meal chicken in curry tough.Breakfasts was poor sausages reheated,bacon and eggs overcooked

Walls were paper thin, could hear pretty much everything going on in the room next to me. The kitchen was closed when it should have been open. The only breakfast included was continental, i had to ‘upgrade’ for a full english/hot roll but this was not communicated to me aywhere before booking. Overall a disappointing stay

Paid for breakfast was told had to pay an extra £10 for a full breakfast, i wasn't the only 1 that thought that they had paid. if i had paid for continental could they not have took the price off full , ended buying full breakfast in the the coffee pot 😐

I had heard good things about the food at the hotel. Unfortunately the chef had taken ill and as a result there were no food options available. I did find the staff to be quite pleasant and helpful
