The British Hotel

Very cool and spacious room for a great price. Self check in and out was easy, parking convenient but first come first serve.

I booked The British Hotel through Hotels.com, which advertised it as a hotel. In reality, it operates more like an Airbnb-style rental, with no front desk, no on-site staff, and very limited amenities. The entrance is confusing and initially led me to the bar in the same building. Parking instructions were unclear (left vs. right, spaces “1–16”), requiring multiple calls to the owner for clarification. The route from parking to the room is long and maze-like, with only short stairs — no elevator — making it very difficult to carry luggage, especially in winter. The room is spacious but bare. There are no standard hotel amenities, towels are limited, and bedding was dirty with hairs and stains. Although listed as non-smoking, strong cigarette and weed smells came from neighbouring rooms. Noise from the bar was minimal during weekdays, but on one night, music and floor vibrations lasted about an hour. The most frustrating issue was the parking exit system. The card reader and payment machine did not work properly, there was no intercom, and I had to go back and forth for 15 minutes, which almost caused me to miss a meeting. Other guests experienced the same issue. Overall, the stay requires a lot of preparation and patience. It’s fine for those traveling light and expecting a self-managed rental experience, but not convenient for travellers seeking typical hotel services.

The bathroom smelled terrible like sewers, carpet had a moldy stench and the shower..let's just say the photos did not make it seem like my coworker could watch me shower! The parking lot machines were not working in the morning and delayed our commute by 15 minutes. There was a party above our room until 11

Had a great stay here. We had the sir John MacDonald room. W really nice and close to everything that’s needed. The parking and how to get to the room was a little confusing but First time here and we will be coming back next time.

We had a wonderful stay and really enjoyed both the hotel and the surrounding area. The underground secure parking was a great bonus. The pub downstairs can get a bit lively on the weekends (we were in Room 203), but we travel with earplugs and a white noise machine, so it wasn’t an issue for us!

We stayed in the Business suite in the apartment building which is connected to the main British Hotel building. The Suite was super spacious and clean. Easy self check in and out. Parking available on the street and local lots.

There was no bathroom - the sink and shower were in the room with the bed and the toilet was in a small closet. The shower was large and excellent except that it was not private as the long side was glass and therefore one was visible to others in the room while showering. Not all people wish to shower in public. Some people travel with others with whom they are not intimate. Very strange. There is no hotel desk, therefore one must find a server in the dining room to learn how to obtain the room key. Also without a Lobby there is no place to ask questions or find brochures about the area. Also very strange. We were there for a weekend and found that some of the streets around the hotel were closed for Octoberfest festivities, therefore making parking in the area very difficult. We would choose a different hotel the next we are in that area.

Hard to find the parking and what doors to use

Staff in hotel were lovely. The place was clean.The only drawback was parking...expensive and not covenient if parking is full.Its dealbreaker.

Beautiful hotel! My first time experiencing a self check in hotel. It was easy once given introductions. I spoke to staff through messaging them in Expedia. They replied very quick. I loved that. I recommend this hotel. Parking is the issue. Road parking is always full and parking in the garage is limited.

Had a great stay. Our room gave onto a sidestreet, and being up one storey we were looking out into fall colours. Quiet overnight. Lovely stylish room. Very clean. Comfortable bed. Easy check-in/check-out process. Great dining and brunch options nearby (the beet and goat cheese salad at the adjoining British pub was wonderful); highly recommend the Mulligan café up the street also for vegan and gluten free options and lovely ambience.

The British Hotel is in a great quaint neighbourhood with many restaurants and a excellent craft brewery near by. The room we stayed was clean and spacious. The room had great amenities.

The room was exactly as promised - clean and neat. During the weekdays, the bar downstairs was quiet, which was a bonus. The only minor issue was that the room, which had two queen beds, only had one chair. However, the price was very reasonable, and overall, I highly recommend this property.

Clean and convenient while visiting alymer

The room was clean. Cozy.

We stayed with kids and truly appreciated the generous and amazing space. However, the bedding and seating areas were quite dusty, which was disappointing. We were also expecting daily housekeeping, but none was provided. Additionally, it felt a bit off-putting not having anyone available on-site to speak with or address concerns directly.

Great size room, clean, quiet, self check in great. The carpet near the shower was lifted and there was a coffee stain on the lamp which I let the host know. The shower stall was right in the bedroom with glass so if you had children or friends, it would be awkward. Would be good if there was a hook near the shower to hang the bath towels. Also, hand cream would be a great addition. Lastly, the air conditioning was loud, but they did provide ear plugs. Very convenient and nice hotel. Check-in and check-out was very easy. Quiet neighbourhood with a beautiful beach and marina which was walkable. Would definitely stay again.

The room was absolutely stunning and beautifully decorated and made an amazing place to surprise my best friend for her birthday. Although the room and the location was amazing, we did have a couple problems during our stay. We were never able to get connected to the Wifi in the room and also the air conditioning in the room was not working all night so made it hard to sleep because it was hot in the room. But the host was very good at responding to help with our troubles and did let us stay 1 hour longer due to these issues happening. Overall, great time staying there!

We've stayed at this hotel 3 times now and love it. Modern, clean, convenient location to everything with a great pub restaurant right next door. We had one issue this time while staying in room #206 we couldn't connect to the internet. Other than that, another excellent stay!

The room was very clean. The pullout couch was VERY uncomfortable. The springs sagged in the middle. I wound suggest you investin an IKEA couches which has boards instead of springs under the mattress

Noisy party downstairs on the Friday night kept us awake.

There was a wedding in the hotel and we couldn’t sleep at all until past 3am. They shouldn’t open rooms to people outside the wedding party because the noise insulation is close to nothing.

The shower water pressure was non existant, a mere dribble from the tap. The room is nice and spacious.

The room was adequate. Since we were above the bar and restaurant there were about 3 nights in which the noise was excessive. Tried to move but there was no availability. We stayed for 8 nights but sheets and towels were not changed until the 6th day. We had to ask for clean towels and coffee pods twice. Enjoyed the neighbourhood though which was walkable with numerous cafes and restaurants and small shops.

Exceptional property with incredible, supportive staff. I’ve been to Britain multiple times - this captures it authentically. Spotless, spacious and adjacent to a British pub with decadent meals. I could not be happier! We stayed in the Executive room with the largest most gorgeous washroom we’ve ever had. We feel like royalty. xo

Did not like that we couldn't talk to an actual front desk person, got lost in the basement tryi g to get to our car, got locked out of everydoor upstairs, again no one to call or to help us.

Had such a great stay! The room was lovely and the location awesome. The staff was super great and easy to communicate with, check-in and out was incredibly easy and convenient. We will 100% stay there again.

Convinient location, alternate apartment was suitable. Not sure about original property I had booked because when I came to check in, keys to original unit was not in lock box. Had to call contact, waited for over 1 hour (from 11:00 to past midnight) and was told someone was on their way, to be relocated to another unit. Checked out the next way at 11, and received multiple emails and text about where I had left the keys. I replied that I had put them back into lock box as per instruction. But they fully refunded me given the confusion so that was really appreciated.

Self-check was smooth. Lovely decor in Hotel. Bright welcoming room, spacious & comfortable. I highly recommend this Hotel. No car? Easy frequent public transit to downtown Ottawa, and return. Good restaurants nearby and a lovely walk to beach/Marina short distance away. Will stay at The British Hotel again.

It's located on an amazing neighborhood in Gatineau plus you're a few minutes from Parliament Hill.

We loved our stay here! The hotel was clean and spacious and in a wonderful location by Pink Lake in Gatineau and just a 15min drive into downtown Ottawa. The host was very friendly and quick to respond to any questions, and the hotel restaurant/bar was great!

It is a beautifully designed and constructed historic rehab with great amenities. A great hotel with a fantastic pub, and delicious cafe. A win, win, win. If ever back in the area, we will absolutely stay there again.

The end of a really nice weekend in the Ottawa area. Stayed at a really nice little hotel in Aylmer, Quebec just across the river known as The British Hotel, built in 1834. Apparently it was quite the brawl room in its heyday. Recently purchased and renovated to include some inexpensive but very modern 2nd floor suites, electronic check-in, lock box entry, self contained pub and restaurant, patio and separate country cafe, at $125/night definitely a place I will be staying at again.

We enjoyed our stay here. It is in a great area. Lots of restaurants within walking distance or good food found in the pub on the main floor. Next time we would request q room that is nit directly above pub and private event room. It was definitely noisy one night. Great many were having fun but a little loud in our room. The earplugs provided were not much help, but appreciated the effort.
