The Welldiggers Arms

Lovely place to stay and eat. We stayed in one of the luxury rooms and it was worth the extra. Really lovely individual patio with very nice garden furniture, umbrella and plants overlooking the Downs. Bed was comfy. We ate dinner in the restaurant, suggest you check the online menu to see the current offering. Enjoyed the steak and the chicken supreme. The online photo shows the back of the restaurant and pub and the luxury patio rooms are in the building to the left of the photo. The front of the pub is on a fairly busy road. There is plenty of parking. I thought at first that there might be a lot of traffic noise, but the rooms at the back were fairly quiet. Note that there are no staff on site overnight but an emergency phone number was provided.

Lovely restaurant, excellent food, great service, view over South Downs, comfortable room with its own terrace, a short drive from Petworth.

We had a lovely stay here; very convenient bar/restaurant/rooms situated a couple of minutes outside of Petworth town. Positives - Lovely restaurant overlooking the landscape with a good menu selection - Exceptional staff, who can't do enough for you - Great beers on tap (including non alcoholic options) - Lovely real fire in the bar area, with a selection of board games to keep you entertained - Dogs welcome in the bar (supplement when staying over) - Lovely beer garden - Everything in the restaurant/bar well maintained - Rooms overlooking the landscape (beautiful at sunrise/set) - Lots of parking - Great walks nearby Negatives - As we stayed overnight, we had dinner and breakfast. Both meals were sent out with key ingredients missing and nothing was mentioned. When we enquired, waiting staff advised the kitchen didnt let them know but this felt a bit cheeky (especially when they are charging £4.50 supplement for a full english breakfast) - As above. A smaller breakfast is included in the room charge but there is a supplement if you want an actual full english - Room/walls are not well insulated, so take ear plugs - Bathroom could have been cleaner. Ours had cobwebs and spiders. - Whilst there are plug points, they were behind bed side tables, making it awkward if you need to use the hairdyer (not sure if all rooms are like this)

When booking advertised on the website that the room had a hot tub however it didn’t. We only found out when checking in. I wasn’t contacted to be informed and felt cheated of the evening we expected for the distance we travelled.

I was truly impressed with The Welldigger's Arms, I loved the room it was just perfect. Ground coffee sachets and cafetierre plus quality teabag options. Lovely view across the countryside. Nice and quiet, good parking, restaurant was also very nice as was the food.

A lovely setting and comfortable room with lots of lovely extras. Although I do not have a dog - loved seeing them around and that they have their own menu . Would recommend

Lovely location and food, room was comfortable. But unfortunately I was advertised a room with a hot tub, which wasn’t working on arrival with no warning or apology, which was really disappointing.

Pleasantly surprised at how nice the accomodation was. Really lovely and confortable. The main pub was also really nice to spend time in. I will definitely be staying here again when back this way.

Most dog friendly place ever been to. Food is great staff friendly Rooms adequate especially if you have a dog. Must remember its a dog catered for hotel. If you not keen on dogs don’t go. All rooms are being refurbed The small court yards on some rooms are not enclosed but those fences are being enclosed in the future once hot tubs removed. So for now dogs can run off into adjacent fields. There are two bridal paths and hotel allow use of their hose to clean mud off paws wellies etc Great food and some great ales an non alcholic ales and cider Hope the senior management value this place and their hardworking staff .

Stay was amazing, room Lovley , great thought gone into decor , so cosy too ! Only let down was a small amount of mould in shower which could easily be rectified with mould remover ! Otherwise excellent!!

The property is lovely and in a beautiful location. The staff are excellent and very friendly. Sadly, the room was very dusty and the underside of the non-slip shower mat had black mould/mildew. The restaurant looked beautiful but unfortunately the chef used so much salt the food was inedible. Even the breakfast was smothered in rocks of salt. The staff told me that it was 2 different chefs but clearly they were trained in the same way. None of our party could eat their dinner and we couldn't cope with the breakfast either.

Fantastic pub and lovely rooms really good host pub food was excellent quality especially the breakfast and amazing views petworth is also beautiful Slight downside room extremely cold even with small heater mold around shower tray cobwebs around outside light but wouldn’t stop us coming back it’s just feed back

exceeded expectations! I feel like the photos don't do it justice. the room was lovely, great ameneities like the toieltries and coffee. the garden /terrace bit was our fave, so beautiful! me, my partner and our dog loved our stay. breakfast was so yummy also :) the only slight downside was the carpet was very warn and stained, you can tell it's dog friendly.

It was very over priced. The room was small, the carpet was stained, the shower was like warm and the breakfast not good - poached eggs on avocado were undercooked.

Very clean, tidy and comfortable we liked the bath and the en-suite was great. Bed was very comfortable and room was warm

Such a lovely peaceful stay! We stayed two nights in a room with a view and couldn’t ask for a better weekend away. Everything was immaculate and the staff was very friendly! Molly was a star and always on top of things. We will definitely be back.

Staff were excellent, food good, good location & value. Sadly the rooms were tired & in need of a serious “Deep clean”!

On arrival, we were asked to pay, despite paying in advance. This was quickly rectified, however, the amount the hotel wanted to charge me was less than I had paid. I contacted Hotels.com about this, asking for a refund of the difference and after a few days was told they did not receive a reply from the Welldiggers and so could not comply with my request. We stayed in room 7. The bathroom was much smaller than anticipated, with the sink being in the bedroom area. I didn't notice this on the main website and it was a disappointment having such a tiny bathroom. Photos showed robes in the room, although these were not provided. The room was very cold, as expected for the time of year but we were able to heat it with the oil filled radiator provided. There was a thermostat on the wall but no real evidence of the heat source. The carpet in the room was noticeably grubby. The bed was the kind which zips together. I've never experienced a problem with one of these beds in other hotels, however, the join was very noticeable in this bed. The worst part for us was the fire escape light that was illuminated in green all night above the door and gave us a terrible night's sleep.I expected better facilities from a Signature room. There was no one available for me to talk to at checkout about the room. The staff member was on a call and didn't ask if we'd had a nice stay, just took the key. Someone else said they just worked in the kitchen. The breakfast was amazing, one of the best.

Lovely location, great service with happy and helpful staff. Food a bit on the expensive side and limited dinner menu, breakfast was really good. Room ok but the showroom was extremely cold. Everything you needed in the room and fresh milk for drinks. Big plus was a served at the table breakfast and not a buffet.

Amazing views but paper thin walls so if you get honeymooners (or whatever they were on) next door good luck! Plus there seems to be a recycling or dump site opposite with hgvs starting to unload from around 6am. Ran out of steak and salmon on first day but they had new stock second day. Food was very nice but we both had bad stomachs on each night, fish batter smelled bad and veg with steak smelled bit funky too. Beer was first class and Butcombe have great scheme for Birthdays and midweek dining.

We had a room with. Wonderful south facing view over the South Downs. The sound proofing between the rooms is not great 😠

We were made very welcome by the manageress which was much appreciated after a difficult day. The room was lovely with lots of luxury touches such as the complimentary lotions. We loved the decor, and the location is lovely, very quiet setting. It was an extremely hot night and although a fan was provided in the room, it wasn't enough to help. The food was nice - especially the breakfast - but the service in the evening was slow. We had to keep flagging the staff even though there weren't many people dining. Overall, recommended!

Both the pub and the rooms were excellent! All the staff were attentive and friendly and the views are simple incredible! We had dinner and breakfast there and couldn’t fault anything about either. The mini doughnuts were a highlight! We recommend this place to anyone looking for a short getaway, especially their Sunday stay deal! Hope to book again next year!

Lovely food and a beautiful room with a comfy bed and fantastic views over the South Downs. Slow and surly service at breakfast was a shame, but overall a pleasant place to stay.

Staff couldn't do enough for us

We enjoyed our stay here in a lovely area, countryside views and peaceful. We stayed 3 nights and the menu was small and unchanged. Small tweeks to the special. Booked a room with the terrace which was lovely as we had excellent weather. Generally the room was well designed, like 2 comfy chairs not 1 as is often the case. Bathroom looked smart but usual no place to put wash bags, no towel rail so wet towels on back of door hooks ...not thought through. Staff were great, friendly and helpful.

We had a lovely stay at the welldiggers. Our room was beautiful, the staff were really helpful and the location was really lovely. The restaurant had beautiful views and the food was brilliant. Would recommend

This is our fourth year in a row staying here with our dog. It has got better and better each time. The view is amazing, the food is great and the staff are all really friendly and helpful. Just overall a lovely place to visit. Great walks from the pub too.

The place is a Jewel. Excellent staff, excellent food, beautiful surroundings and lovely rooms. Brilliant stay.

Lovely place. Staff very friendly and accomodating and hospitable a- allowed us to sit in the restaurant (with views) ahead of dinner. Lovely breakfast. Altogether a wonderful and relaxing trip.
