In the middle of nowhere this busy hotel is managed by limited staff that seem to have great passion for your enjoyment at heart It's a great base to explore the area but transport is essential. Close to the motorway makes it easily accessible and situated in a small woodland keeps it quiet and peaceful The hotel itself is moderate but clean and well presented with good parking although the acees roads to the property are a little narrow and potholey. The restaurant menu is a bit limited but food is good on the hole with a well stocked bar and cosy bar area I would certainly stop again when visiting the area !

I opted for the half board option and the food was delicious and the portions more than generous. The staff were very friendly. The dog friendly rooms are in a chalet detached from the hotel which was disapointing but atleast there is plenty of countryside around to walk a dog. Infact, the hotel is surrounded by nature and the property is stunning.

We stayed at Shap Wells for one night en route from South West England to Scotland. The hotel is located just off the M6 in Cumbria, so ideal for that. The room was fine, with all the facilities expected, including a decent shower. We had an evening meal in the restaurant, used the games room, and had breakfast in the morning. We also had a stroll along the stream in the grounds and saw many red squirrels, which was an unexpected bonus. We’d happily stay there again as a stop-off point, or to explore the lakes. Kendall/Windermere/Ullswater are all with 30 mins drive. The majority of the clientele whilst we were there were from a UK coach tour of the lakes. Note that the hotel is quite isolated, so great if you are after tranquility, but it’s not near fast food establishments and gift shops.

Really lovely place to stay, comfortable and quiet and lovely breakfast. Was great to be able to take my dog with us, the only negative would be that for breakfast we were separated due to having the dog but still had to walk backwards and forwards to the buffet area carrying our food through Reception which was awkward, a smaller buffet could perhaps be provided in dog area?

Unexpectedly huge period property with helpful friendly staff. Has a gym and games room with full sized snooker table, pool table and table tennis. Room was rather warm, could have done with a fan or aircon.

Very good service, room comfortable with a lovely Lounge and Bar with beautiful fittings and decor. An amazing lift and great ambience in the Dining Room. A delicious dinner and breakfast. A stunning after dinner walk in picturesque surroundings. Could do with an advertising board nearer the M6 as you are such a hidden gem!

Nice location (quite remote and quiet) and friendly staff. Some gaps in the breakfast service, e.g. lacking glasses, plates etc. And the breakfast ended already at 9 which was very early for me. The condition of the hotel was quite worn-out and occasionally dirty, there were several spiderwebs and spiders in the hallway and the smell of our room was musty.

Staff very friendly in all departments, food was excellent, both dinner and breakfast. Room although on the small side was adequate, however some areas hadn’t been cleaned to a reasonable standard. The downstairs areas were very clean and had been updated.

We love this hotel. The staff can’t do enough for you. The setting of the hotel is wonderful with many walks and the red squirrel sanctuary. The hotel is spotlessly clean. We will definitely go again.

Bed comfortable,room nice,staff wonderful facilities very good all in all a lovely relaxing stay.our one slight complaint when we were dining in the window seats we noticed a large amount of spiders webs on the inside of the windows,(just needs a feather duster for 5mins every now and then)

Used the hotel as a stop over for travelling north. Have stayed before but in all honesty feel like it’s not as good as the last few times we have stayed. Dirty towels and not so clean room. Breakfast wasn’t up to its usual standard. But there were two coach loads in so maybe they were stretched.

Good location down a beaten road between the A6 and M6. Very friendly welcome at reception and in the bar. Faded-grandeur in the reception which became a relaxing evening lounge with plenty of choice from the bar. Room was compact but very warm and with strong over-he-bath shower.I don't know why my room was called 'garden view' when all I saw was a concrete backyard quadrangle. Breakfast was excellent: lots of hot options and some cereals & fruit to set you up for the day.It was good value when included in the room rate, or even at £12.50. Dinner was more expensive with 4 options from a set menu. And while well presented and tasty it was a little on the small side after a day's walking or riding, so we ate before returning to the hotel on the second night.

The hotel is remote and access roads are full of pot holes...take it slow! The hotel is dated and overpriced. The bedrooms are small and very tired looking. The bathroom wasnt clean and needs to be replaced. For one night it is ok, especially after a long drive, if you like 70/80's decor then this is for you.

Arrived after 10pm and found an envelope on the reception with my name and room 35 written on it. (Not quite the 24hr desk) Went to room 35 and tried the key - to spot the tag said room 36. Tried that and access... Just glad no-one was in room 35, that would have been very awkward. The room felt dated, and quite cold. I like a cold bedroom, so didnt think this would be an issue - how wrong could I be. Woke up a few times shivering. Didnt really want to get up next morning due to the cold! Went to breakfast, really short staffed. After 10 minutes, I had 3 slices of toast and no-one had even noticed I was sat there. The other 2 tables that were occupied sent their food back as it was cold. I went to the main desk and found the manager. He came and proceeded to deal with other tables! When he took my order, it was either cold, cremated or both. Oh, and missing the fried bread. Apparently the evening meals are lovely - but I wont be rushing back to find out. On a plus, the rooms were quiet, erm - thats about the most positive I can find. I guess it makes you realise how good other places can be.

This is a great hotel for an overnight stay.Our room was a little cramped and the decor was looking a bit tiredbut it was clean and comfortable. We booked our breakfast slot after the coach parties and there was not a lot left to eat. Check-in was excellent but staff could have been more attentive at breakfast time.

Great hotel rooms were large and everything we needed. Super value for money. The staff were amazing considering it was Easter and how busy they were, still managed to smile and make time for us. Would highly recommend to stay there as more than reasonable and near the Lakes and The Dales .. will definitely return… thank you guys

What a lovely hotel. So much original character. Really enjoyed it here. The location was beautiful especially with all the greenery around. Breakfast was lovely, a buffet with plenty to choose from. The best thing about the hotel besides the character was the staff, the Owner/manager was very friendly, welcoming and seems very proud of the hotel. Overall it was definitely a place I would recommend others to visit. The only request I would make is that when you book a room, ask for one in the main building if you can 🙂

A mix-up over the bill meant that I was initially overcharged by more than £200. It was sorted very quickly, but it took the shine off our stay. the place was lovely and the staff especially Hannah were great although stretched to their limits, we had to wait a long time to be served at the bar. Food in the restaurant wasn't good but our feedback was dealt with swiftly and to our satisfaction. Loved the area to see the red squirrels who came out in abundance, so lovely to see them.

The female receptionist that welcomed us was very unfriendly and had a miserable face first impressions count and this wasn’t good ! Every time we saw her she was the same has put us off staying there we very nearly left before we had finished checking in , only for the fact it was late we were tired and my partner has COPD The rest of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful

Quite a traditional old Cumbrian/Scottish Highlands type of hotel. It's convenient to the M6 but in the middle of nowhere. Ideal base for walkers or to explore the lakes. All the staff were friendly and really helpful. Our room was a decent size with a huge double bed and and a single. It was clean and nicely decorated. The bathroom and shower were also great. Breakfast was cooked to order and all tasted great, there was also a small we selection of cereals. There was free WiFi which was good enough to watch movies or play games on your tablet. Which was just as well as the TT v only had a couple of channels. We only stayed 1 night so easy an issue for us.

In the middle of nowhere this busy hotel is managed by limited staff that seem to have great passion for your enjoyment at heart It's a great base to explore the area but transport is essential. Close to the motorway makes it easily accessible and situated in a small woodland keeps it quiet and peaceful The hotel itself is moderate but clean and well presented with good parking although the acees roads to the property are a little narrow and potholey. The restaurant menu is a bit limited but food is good on the hole with a well stocked bar and cosy bar area I would certainly stop again when visiting the area !

We stayed at Shap Wells for one night en route from South West England to Scotland. The hotel is located just off the M6 in Cumbria, so ideal for that. The room was fine, with all the facilities expected, including a decent shower. We had an evening meal in the restaurant, used the games room, and had breakfast in the morning. We also had a stroll along the stream in the grounds and saw many red squirrels, which was an unexpected bonus. We’d happily stay there again as a stop-off point, or to explore the lakes. Kendall/Windermere/Ullswater are all with 30 mins drive. The majority of the clientele whilst we were there were from a UK coach tour of the lakes. Note that the hotel is quite isolated, so great if you are after tranquility, but it’s not near fast food establishments and gift shops.

Hotel was very nice but old and could use some updating. Its in middle of nowhere with literally 2 miles of drive on narrow road in fields with no buildings in site. This did make it quiet. There was a nature trail that we did not have time to explore. It was convenient location for us as a stop on drive between Glascow and Liverpool

We got to this property by chance. What a fun surprise. It is an old but very well kept inn. It has many beautiful hikes around. It is in the middle of nowhere. And that makes it even more fantastic.

What a lovely hotel. So much original character. Really enjoyed it here. The location was beautiful especially with all the greenery around. Breakfast was lovely, a buffet with plenty to choose from. The best thing about the hotel besides the character was the staff, the Owner/manager was very friendly, welcoming and seems very proud of the hotel. Overall it was definitely a place I would recommend others to visit. The only request I would make is that when you book a room, ask for one in the main building if you can 🙂

The driveway could do with an upgrade. Perhaps either light up the sign on the A66 or make it reflective as in the dark and mist it is easy to drive past without seeing it, as I did, twice!

Nice old worlde hotel . Beautiful location . Easy check in . First room smelt of stale smoke so was promptly moved . Cold shower and when I mentioned this I was told maintenance were working on it . A warning might of staved off the shivers . Booked dinner sadly that was cold and when I mentioned that there was no solution . Great choice for breakfast but sadly that was also cold

Arrived after 10pm and found an envelope on the reception with my name and room 35 written on it. (Not quite the 24hr desk) Went to room 35 and tried the key - to spot the tag said room 36. Tried that and access... Just glad no-one was in room 35, that would have been very awkward. The room felt dated, and quite cold. I like a cold bedroom, so didnt think this would be an issue - how wrong could I be. Woke up a few times shivering. Didnt really want to get up next morning due to the cold! Went to breakfast, really short staffed. After 10 minutes, I had 3 slices of toast and no-one had even noticed I was sat there. The other 2 tables that were occupied sent their food back as it was cold. I went to the main desk and found the manager. He came and proceeded to deal with other tables! When he took my order, it was either cold, cremated or both. Oh, and missing the fried bread. Apparently the evening meals are lovely - but I wont be rushing back to find out. On a plus, the rooms were quiet, erm - thats about the most positive I can find. I guess it makes you realise how good other places can be.

Very good service, room comfortable with a lovely Lounge and Bar with beautiful fittings and decor. An amazing lift and great ambience in the Dining Room. A delicious dinner and breakfast. A stunning after dinner walk in picturesque surroundings. Could do with an advertising board nearer the M6 as you are such a hidden gem!

All in all, we would not recommend! They didn’t seem to know we were arriving with a baby and a dog, despite several messages from me. They showed us to a room far too small and through the dining room so we wouldn’t be able to get our dog to it. We were given a new larger room which smelt strange and we had to call to ask for towels. No cot was provided, although we were offered one later on. We were told there was no food on the menu available as it had been pre-booked by the coach guests and we should have pre-booked, despite an email saying we didn’t need to - we were told to go to the local pub, which was also full. The supper that we did eventually get was simple but mainly good and breakfast was basic canteen food - alright but very greasy and tasteless. Neither the food nor the hotel were worth the money and we will definitely not be returning.

We have stayed here before and love the hotel. The only problem this time was that bar food is advertised and on the first full day we asked and were told there was none on offer.We had no alternative than to pay for one main course each. More food than we wanted at a much higher price.

Used the hotel as a stop over for travelling north. Have stayed before but in all honesty feel like it’s not as good as the last few times we have stayed. Dirty towels and not so clean room. Breakfast wasn’t up to its usual standard. But there were two coach loads in so maybe they were stretched.

We stayed at Shap Wells for 1 night to meet up with Friends. We had a problem with our room, Staff were excellent, swapped rooms 👍 We had an Evening Meal, 3 courses, which was lovely and Breakfast was delicious. The Hotel is quite remote, nothing around for miles, but we had our car to travel out.
