The Retreat, Elcot Park

Had a lovely staycation at the retreat. Great outdoor pool and spa area. Staff are wonderful.

Lovely room, nicely decorated. Clean. Warm. Nice products. Spa was also great, the hot tub however was luke warm and as guests cant put wood in, you'd have to walk back inside to ask soembody, surely staff should should be checling this stuff. Another thing is so many used towels were left on the beds after people left meaning nobody knew if they could use the bed or not, again staff should be on top of this. Breakfast room was lovely, good selection. The tea was horrid though. Staff were really slow to serve drinks in the afternoon but were friendly . Over all had a great time and have recommended to friends, just a few staff issues to iron out

Really great spot for a 1-2 night away. Brilliant spa and pool, lovely countryside setting with great walks and relaxing feel. The whole vibe of the hotel is relaxed and cool. Sone really nice touches too (ie free soft drinks abs sweets in the room/pantry, board games in the bar, free pins on arrival, etc) Food very good too, nice restaurants and bars. And the staff were all great. Really good value. You would pay double for this type of staff in Cotswolds or alike. Great place, highly recommend

My balcony room was overlooking the car park and got no sun which was disappointing. Outdoor pool is really lovely and good number of sunloungers to enjoy the sun. Spa was incredible, I don’t use them often but the massage was sensational. Breakfast kept running out of food and dinner seems a touch overpriced. Restaurant staff do their best and are lovely but are essentially untrained sixth formers. Nice place but wouldn’t rush back.

Overall a disappointing stay. Room was basic and outdated, and felt too small for the price we were paying. We had a few issues with our room which weren’t able to get sorted which was disappointing. The hotel spa is fairly small so gets very busy quickly, and whilst we were the hydrotherapy pool wasn’t working, but no one apologised or flagged that to us. Food is very good and nice to have two options, but breakfast is overpriced for a basic buffet.

What a fantastic stay at The Retreat! From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this is a place where every little detail is thoughtfully considered to ensure an exceptional guest experience. The facilities are truly faultless — from the beautifully designed rooms to the immaculate communal spaces. The spa was absolutely top-notch, offering a relaxing and luxurious experience that left us feeling completely rejuvenated. A special mention must go to Leanne in the spa, whose exemplary customer service made our visit even more memorable. The heated outdoor pool was a real treat, such a unique and relaxing touch. Breakfast was amazing, with a wide variety of high-quality options that catered to all tastes. Every bite reflected the same attention to detail seen throughout the rest of the hotel. The staff, without exception, were warm, professional, and went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. Their dedication and friendliness truly set The Retreat apart. Highly recommend, and we’ll absolutely be back for another visit soon.

The pros: The spa is a bit small but nice, the decor is fun, great cocktails, good food, our room was quiet, the tennis court was fun The cons: The beds were hard, the vegan breakfast options limited, difficult to get a booking at the restaurants or spa without booking well in advance and the whole place feels a bit big and not boutiquey

We loved our 2 night stay here, the restaurant was great (unfortunately couldn’t get a booking at Yu Pan Asian) and we loved that the outdoor pool was heated for swimming in winter. The spa facilities do get extremely busy and noisy on Saturday but Friday evening and Sunday it was really pleasant to use. Our massage treatments were amazing, very relaxing. We stayed in a Heritage double room, very comfortable and with lovely personal touches to the room. Could use a few hooks by door for big winter coats and a place to store shoes and better pillows. Service was overall very good, extremely friendly staff. It did seem that some staff were not as well informed as others as when we enquired about a few things, we got mixed answers but nothing major - like I said everyone was extremely professional and friendly. We were recommended good local walks, the grounds of the hotel are lovely too. Would definitely recommend this hotel and we can’t wait to come back.

We enjoyed our stay, we loved that there was a pantry with drinks and snacks in, and the staff were so friendly from reception to breakfast the next morning. The pool area was good, and we'd come back again.

Fantastic pet friendly hotel, amazing food, great walks outside, great extras, love the pantry’s and the boots for free hire, the games in the lounge and the free night cap, to be super picky the only complain I could have is the outside hot tubs need a good clean and sadly while I was their only one was working which may be the reason for the tub needing cleaning due to over use. But it still gets 5 stars from me as the rest was stellar quality.

Lacks attention to detail - i.e. needed long mirror in room, shower without hand attachment, tables in lounge and restaurant required cleaning. Food ok. Breakfast service very slow. Room for improvement but, nevertheless, potentially very good.Family and dog-friendly.

Our stay at this property was really underwhelming. While the gardens and outdoors are beautiful and well kept, the interiors are quite tired, particularly the rooms. Lots of scratches on the wall, no wardrobe in the room, terrible shower where it is impossible to regulate the water temperature. The spa was probably the biggest disappointment, it is very small and the outdoor pool is not heated despite the description ( and the staff) says it is. The highlight of the property is definitely their asian restaurant on site, both service and food were exceptional. Otherwise, the staff at the spa and reception seems clueless most of the time, we had to chase them up for everything we needed and were mostly dismissive and not helpful. This is not what you would expect from a luxury hotel, definitely not good value for money and a lot of room for improvement.

Three blown windows and a smell of sewage in the bathroom which was not dealt with was slightly disappointing. Otherwise this is a great hotel, in a great location with a great spa.

However, the outdoor pool was quite dirty, including the loungers and the pool surfaces with bird poo and staining on the tiles. Also our room did not have air conditioning and it was extremely hot and uncomfortable to sleep the first night. After this we had fans on which the hotel supplied. We had a lovely stay despite the small issues.

The building and grounds are beautiful. Staff are amazing and amazing 5 star touches such as a drink on arrival, freshly made biscuits in the room. They also gave us a complimentary drink in our room due to it being our anniversary. What lets this place down slightly is the room. Whilst it was still very nice it was on the small side and the shower is the main thing which is not good enough. It’s an old shower head which looks like something you would get in a travel lodge and water pressure was terrible. They should upgrade to rainfall shower heads to match the quality of the rest of the hotel. Dinner was exceptional. Amazing cocktails and food was spot on.

Absolutely perfect stay here. The decor, the staff, the food, the atmosphere was all wonderful, honestly couldn’t fault it here. Staff were helpful and kind, the cleanliness was perfection and the spa was heavenly.

We had a lovely 1 might stay with our children. The family room was massive and had some toys in the kids room which was a hit! I especially loved the decor of the property and the orangery where we had dinner and breakfast was stunning. The food was excellent too! Will definitely be back.

It’s a beautiful location and quite a lovely hotel, however we were disappointed with our room. The standard was just not what we had expected given the price. Very hard bed, uncomfortable pillows and no mini fridge, hair dryer or other common appliances typically offered in hotel rooms.

We had probably the worst bedroom with no views over the garden, but immediately over noisy bin storage. Shower over bath with no safety handles. Dangerous.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Amenities are great. Bed was super comfortable. Would have been 5 stars all round except no wardrobe in the bedroom.

Stayed at Elcot on two separate bookings over a period in February. The best thing about the Elcot is the fact that the staff are really nice and helpful throughout the hotel. We had multiple restaurant bookings and changed numbers and times all good. The bed and linen is also wonderful so good for a nights sleep. We had two rooms, both were good but one was an odd shape with a shower in the bath tub which we changed on our second time. We have family in Newbury area and this is our go to hotel. If I have one small complaint its the beer selection in the bar. I like an IPA and the one on tap isn't a good one!

Terrible room. Noisy and small. Apparently we shouldn't have booked the Classic room. Based on our experience I'd advise others to think twice before doing so. Most staff excellent but Reception staff could do with a Customer Care course!

Beautiful relaxing Country House with rambling gardens. Superb food and hospitality. Beautiful bedroom but too hot! Tried opening windows but noise from ventilation units outside too i intrusive! Needed more hanging space Loved the Pantry!

After spending 30 mins waiting to be given the room key as they were having issues with the Expedia booking I finally got to my room, as soon as I walked in I heard the industrial extractor fan which was installed just outside the bedroom window on the flat roof over the kitchen, the noise was the same as being in an aeroplane , I went down to reception to say that I wouldn’t be able to accept this room due to the noise of this kitchen extractor fan to be told that the fan would be switched off at 11pm and normally they charge a lot more for rooms hence the reason why my room was so cheap (all I did was book through Expedia, there was no mention that the reason my room was £120 per night was due to an industrial extractor fan just outside the bedroom window) the reception spoke to her manager and came back and offered another room for an extra £20 which I declined, the good news is that the constant noise of this industrial extractor fan did stop at 11pm but started up again at 6am, the room was hot and you couldn’t open the windows as the latches had been painted over so many times but if you could open the windows to let some fresh air in then the noise would be the same as standing next to an aeroplane on takeoff, hotel is nice but the rooms near this extractor fan should not be offered at all and to say there is a reason the rooms are so cheap due to this is not acceptable, I would not recommend this hotel due to my experience with the time taken to check in and the fans

Overall a very enjoyable and comfortable stay. Rooms good, spa very nice, tennis courts and outdoor pool great. Grounds nice to wander round and comfortable lounge areas. Restaurant coped well with 17 of us on Mothers Day. Breakfast buffet is plentiful and good but avoid the included eggs benedict (really poor) and although trying hard the service at breakfast was poor on 1 of the 2 days (20 mins to get tea or coffee).

Hotel is in beautiful grounds, but there were things not to our liking. First of all we booked a room ensuring it wasn't the cheapest one. We found ourselves in a room overlooking car park/dustbins. Breakfast was not included with our stay, £16 per person was the cost. After we saw what was being offered for breakfast we decided to decline. We have never seen such an awful breakfast - bagels, cakes, cereals. If you want an egg dish they bring you a menu and it is extra! Dinner was nice but expensive. Would we visit again? Not sure. If the weather is nice you can sit by the pool, but there actually isnt much to do there

Lovely luxury country hotel in a beautiful location.

This was one of the most relaxing stays we've had in a long time. The courtyard has a fabulous shop, the spa has a flotation tank and there is an overwhelming ease moving through this hotel. There is a 24/7 pantry with bottled drinks and cookies(!). This hotel is also genuinely dog-friendly with an adorable bed, toy and treats for our cavalier. We were surrounded by gorgeous farmland and walking paths. As it's so near to London, we can't wait to return.

Our experience at retreat Elcot Park has been excellent. The service standards are comparable to a 5 stars hotel and each and every member of the staff is adequately trained, polite, pleasant and efficient. The hotel proposes a wide range of activities, often with complementary services. Hike, tours, tennis court, spa. No overcharge to borrow the tennis rackets or to borrow boots to do a beautiful hike in the area and even complementary snacks ! Both restaurants were delicious and the 1775 brasserie clearly deserves a Michelin’s recommandation. My compliments to the chef and his/her team. Note that without a car, you are pretty much required to eat all meals at the hotel which may end up pricy (but tasty). The spa is new and in a good state. Add an outside jacuzzi to make it perfect. We will be back!

I was really looking forward to our stay at The Retreat, as it had just picked up some impressive award for the best hotel in Britain or similar. The greeting from the reception team on arrival was excellent, we were seated on nice sofas and given a glass of wine. Then we were shown to our room which was a nice size but a little limited in furniture, but ok. There are pantries near the rooms where you can help yourself to drinks and snacks etc which is a really nice touch. We booked dinner in the hotel, there was a big party in that night as well so the service was terribly slow and the food ok, but not too special. In the morning we used the outdoor swimming pool and spa facilities, I had a facial as well which was all nice, I especially liked the pool. There was the odd touch missing ie no slippers in the rooms to go to the spa with. Breakfast was continental and if you wanted anything else it was an extra charge which was a bit strange, but actually ok and there was plenty of choice. In summary we had a nice time, some bits were really good, but it didn’t live up to what I was expecting have read about the hotel.

Lovely hotel. We opted for the Sutton Suite which was large and well laid out. Service is super friendly, but not always as helpful as it could be. Both 1772 and Yû are reasonably good and sensibly priced. Don’t bother to get breakfast included. It’s good but buy it when there. Included options are limited. Spa is great.
