We lived in Ashington for 50 years before moving away and have used the Portland hotel when returning to visit family and friends. In those 50 years we have never had to pay for parking anywhere in Ashington and the whole town is still free parking. The Portland has now decided to fleece customers by charging £10 for overnight parking In the hotel car park while there is ample free parking all over town. The bar closes at 10pm or earlier if it is quiet even for residents and their guests so making arrangements for meeting with friends is difficult.

The hotel is in a Victorian commercial hotel and is very nicely decorated. The staff are amazing and very helpful. Any problems we had were quickly and politely dealt with. We chose to eat in the hotel on a Saturday evening and we all enjoyed our choices. We were leaving early on Sunday and so could not sample breakfast. Our accommodation block was behind the main building and very quiet with secured parking. Parking is charged as an extra but is reasonable. We would certainly stay again and arrange some spa treatments as the hotel offered a discount if booked before arrival.

Very friendly staff. Lovely room. Fairtrade hot drinks! Watch out for £10 / night secure parking charge and for busy restaurant at the pub. Can recommend Glenton's bakery next door for breakfast and lunch items. Overall excellent value .

Great hotel with marvellous staff. I was upgraded when i checked in and the room i was given was fantastic. It was a pity i was only in the hotel for one night and did not get the full advantage of my upgrade. I also had free parking, however overnight parking is normally charged by the hotel at £10.00 per night which i thought was quite expensive!

Hotel rooms at the back of a large traditional local stone public house. Very good standard of room. Easy to park car park of a good size. Bus stops directly outside the hotel. 15mins walk to town centre. Check-in though was too slow, using staff that were occupied at the bar. Staff very friendly when eventually the lady arrived. Check-out also suffered by using staff from the pub area, although early in the morning the wait was not long.

My second stay at the Portland Hotel, Ashington and once again, they excelled. Staff could not be more friendly and welcoming (Jess and the guy behind the bar, sorry I forgot your name) looked after me very well. Room (I stayed in one of the rooms out back in the purpose built rooms) was lovely. Great to have a fridge in the room and a very comfy bed. Kept beautifully clean (Thanks housekeeping) and contained everything a traveller could want in a hotel room. Desk space, plenty of power sockets - I’m a very large bloke (six foot six inches tall) and struggled to get my legs under the desk but that’s MY problem, not the Portland Hotel. It certainly didn’t stop me working 👍 Food in the pub / restaurant was great. Good sized portions and well cooked. Speedy service too. The Portland Hotel has now become my ‘go to’ hotel whenever I’m back in the North East. Book direct for special deals! (Ask for Kaliffa or Mack)

Great for a one night stay but be warned. You have to pay £10 to park your car overnight although I got mine for free due to my Hotels.com membership. Room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. There was a Mini fridge, hairdryer, iron and ironing board and the towels were nice and fluffy (some things you don’t always get). Only complaint was that the heated towel rail in the bathroom was rusty and I couldn’t work out how to turn it on. Would definitely recommend

The staff were all nice so no complaints there. The room was ok but its clearly needing some investment and cleaning. The bathroom had lots of mould and shower head was so bad we all refused to use it. I manage a facility with showers and there are requirements to prevent legionella that are clearly not being followed. There was also an emergency light with a green led so bright it kept the room illuminated the whole night. Never seen this anywhere else but it kept us up and prevented our 1 year old sleeping.

Second time in staying. Lovely quiet room. Comfy bed, plenty of room to move around the room. Bathroom was a little worn, but clean and certainly did not affect the visit. First time we have had food when staying there, and it did not disappoint. Huge portions and tasty. There was live entertainment on the evening we arrived and it was really easy listening whilst eating our food.

It was a nice stay and the room was comfortable, however, the bathroom smelled musty. Also, there’s nowhere to put wash bags in the bathroom so a shelf would be handy. Parking was included with my booking and there were plenty of spaces available.

OK place for short notice, not for longer trips. Staff friendly enough. The room I was in had a musty damp smell, although didn't feel or look damp. The pillows were terrible, very stained, so much so you could see it though the pillow cases. One of my pet hates is booking a super king bed then getting 2 beds pushed together, like here, very uncomfortable. Posatives are, free parking, good evening food options. Needs some upgrades here and there.

Been here quite a few time's really nice hotel/bar, staff are very friendly, Was in room 15 this time and was a little annoyed that there is just 1 plug socket in the whole room! and it was right over next to tv, And the fridge was plugged into 1 of them. but made do.

Very comfortable stay, room great, evening meal was good value, tasty and plentyful. Breakfast was good but would be excellent with a better quality sausage! from a business perspective, decent desk and chair in room and quick reliable Wifi.

Hotel rooms at the back of a large traditional local stone public house. Very good standard of room. Easy to park car park of a good size. Bus stops directly outside the hotel. 15mins walk to town centre. Check-in though was too slow, using staff that were occupied at the bar. Staff very friendly when eventually the lady arrived. Check-out also suffered by using staff from the pub area, although early in the morning the wait was not long.

Nothing around the pub/hotel that you can walk to, it’s basically in the middle of a residential area. The rooms are in a block in the car park at the back of the pub so it can be somewhat noisy. Bathrooms are old and in need of refurbishment and there were some stains on the walls and carpets. On the plus side, the beds are huge and comfy and the pub staff were friendly and welcoming. It’s cheap and cheerful!

Do not be fooled by the exterier on the main road as you pull up, when you get in to the car park it has a lovely beer garden. The rooms are actually separate to the pub and its like a new build, the rooms are lovely and comfy and no noise. The food in the restaurant is amazing, good menu and the breakfast was lovely too, poached eggs cooked to perfection. And lastly the staff were all friendly and attentive and the manager was great, so helpful even took me over carrying my case to my room. Cannot reccomend enough, i will definitely be back when next in the area.

Really enjoyed our stay based in a recently built (or upgraded?) annex. Very friendly staff who were helpful and supportive. We ate one night in the hotel and enjoyed a wide ranging choice of menu. Food was served quickly (although we did have to chase the waiter for the dessert menu). Excellent location for touring the area. 10 minutes drive to Morpeth and the A1 (or national rail) and 5 minutes from the coast at Newbiggin. There is a country park on the outskirts of Ashington. This was definitely an excellent value for money trip and we would be keen to return. Newcastle is only 20 minutes away.

Nice friendly staff and the room in the lodges area was clean and tidy. Nice and warm on a cold windy night with a large bed. Food choice was extensive and tasty (what we had) and drinks good. For the money excellent value

Lovely welcome and quick check in. Room was very comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. We had dinner in the restaurant which had a good variety reasonably priced meals and drinks. We opted not to have breakfast in the hotel as we thought this was a little expensive at £15 -£20 per person. Overall an enjoyable stay.

My second stay at the Portland Hotel, Ashington and once again, they excelled. Staff could not be more friendly and welcoming (Jess and the guy behind the bar, sorry I forgot your name) looked after me very well. Room (I stayed in one of the rooms out back in the purpose built rooms) was lovely. Great to have a fridge in the room and a very comfy bed. Kept beautifully clean (Thanks housekeeping) and contained everything a traveller could want in a hotel room. Desk space, plenty of power sockets - I’m a very large bloke (six foot six inches tall) and struggled to get my legs under the desk but that’s MY problem, not the Portland Hotel. It certainly didn’t stop me working 👍 Food in the pub / restaurant was great. Good sized portions and well cooked. Speedy service too. The Portland Hotel has now become my ‘go to’ hotel whenever I’m back in the North East. Book direct for special deals! (Ask for Kaliffa or Mack)

Second time in staying. Lovely quiet room. Comfy bed, plenty of room to move around the room. Bathroom was a little worn, but clean and certainly did not affect the visit. First time we have had food when staying there, and it did not disappoint. Huge portions and tasty. There was live entertainment on the evening we arrived and it was really easy listening whilst eating our food.

The hotel is in a run down area and it needs a bit of a decor vamp. Aldo having to pay for parking at 10 pounds a day is ridiculous as I was on a spare piece of land outside the hotel . The manager asked me to move no wonder he was getting 20 pounds out of me moving my car Was supposed to be in a deluxe double room if this was deluxe then why would I not have special favours like little soap’s conditioner etc etc Also breakfast was 15 pounds each not worth it No bacon and beans were cold Also the fresh fruit was from a tin terrible

Graet hotel. Pleasant staff, very helpful. Room was modern and recently decorated. Spacious and comfortable although the TV was in a weird place at right angles to the bed? If the bed was turned onto the side wall it wouldn't be quite so awkward to watch but this is just a minor observation. Good choice of food in the bar downstairs. Breakfast was freshly cooked and not buffet style.

Exceptional quality for the price point - I'd expect to pay a lot more for the quality of the accommodation and the outstanding service from the staff. They were attentive, helpful and very friendly and made me feel welcome. Mack (I assume he was the duty manager) went above and beyond and couldn't have been more helpful. What a wonderful place to stay - would highly recommend it.
