The Richards House Bed & Breakfast

We were not warned before our arrival that there was scaffolding on the outside of the building. We almost didn’t go in because the outside looks like such disarray. We were pleasantly surprised when we stepped inside and saw such a lovely quaint renovated house. The inside was very nice. The service was great and the breakfast the following morning was terrific. I will definitely stay here again.

The property is daunting from the outside - there is scaffolding surrounding the building. But don't let that deter you! It is stunning inside. easy street parking. Can walk to the Farmer's Market.

It's a super old, very unique house. The bed was comfortable. My room only has a bathtub, no shower. The owners were super nice and breakfast was amazingly good. The neighborhood is a bit rundown and there is only street parking but there was plenty available.

Very large rooms! Quiet. Comfortable bed. Free hot tea, coffee, sodas and cookies! Microwave and refrigerator was available. Nice breakfast. WiFi available. I would go there again !!! Colleen

What an awesome experience. The hosts were very nice and the breakfast was outstanding! A comfortable room with a nice bed and linens. The exterior is under remodel and the temporary wooden steps were a little uneasy to comprehend. Some updating to the insides needed as well but it looks like a wonderful place being reborn. A great experience.

Outside appearance was terrible yet interior was unique. Unfinish work(like semi-exposed wiring) should have been corrected. Breakfast was outstanding.

Historic mansion that is in the process of being restored and initial look was questionable. Inside the house is beautiful. Breakfast was great as the host is a great cook. I would stay here again but it was difficult for a senior citizen to negotiate the many stairs as we were assigned to top floor 3.

Our room was very spacious and had an attached bath. This property is under renovation, but the hostess was very nice and we enjoyed our stay. Our room was comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was good, and plentiful. The baked peach was absolutely delicious! The exterior needs to be finished to be more inviting.

The stay overall went well. Upon arriving I didn’t think the lodging was open because of the scaffolding and general condition of the outside of the building. It is very old and part of the historic registry but needs significant upkeep. The inside has many historic pieces and interesting history. The walls /painting/wallpaper etc also need some updates. Our room had a really great clawfoot tub. They have hundreds of dvds to use as well. There is a common refrigerator to use and they leave the leftover snack out for guests. The breakfast is wonderful and very filling! It is also a great location next to the farmers market.

Do not judge this masterpiece by the cover. The exterior is under some renovations but once you walk inside you step back in time to an era of exquisite taste for decor and furniture. You feel like you’re living in another time, a simpler more elegant time. The Innkeepers make sure at every moment you’re having an enjoyable stay. From cookie, desserts and popcorn available at all times to having free beverages (sodas and wines) at your fingertips. They make sure your room is ready for a nice relaxing stay. They are very kind, courteous and friendly as well as engaging and polite. The rooms have window air that keep you nice and comfortable. The rooms are also decorated with what seem to be original pieces to the house. The pictures don’t do it justice. Location is fabulous. And the breakfast felt like a home cooked meal with love baked in. I will stay here again when I visit the area.

It is a cool old house in a dramatic state of disrepair; tattered linens, stained carpets, roof panels missing. Towels were stained. The owners are very nice but I would not stay again.

This place is a gem. The hosts are the long-time owners and restorers of the house and they are wonderful! Don't worry about the spooky exterior, the place is immaculate inside and full of Dubuque history. I’ve stayed there 3 times over the years and will definitely be back.

The outside was in a sad state of disrepair which made it difficult to find (we drove past it twice), with scaffolding outside, missing paint, garbage around the back porch, and no visible house number or sign (so faded in was unreadable from the street). There was junk in the breezeway when you enter. When we left to go to dinner, a huge groundhog went running past the front porch and hid underneath the next building. The home itself had beautiful woodwork and fireplaces, with some original features and period furnishings. Our room had a broken window pane with clear tape over it, another two lower halves of windows were boarded up, wires sticking out out of the bathroom wall with plastic caps on them, a filthy rug in the bathroom, the mirror over the sink was quite dirty, and the toilet had to be plunged every time we used it. To make things really uncomfortable, the owner yelled at his wife during breakfast service, which was very unsettling. This would be beautiful if the building was brought up to code and repairs were made, everything was clean and tidy, and the owner didn't yell at his wife within earshot of guests. I wouldn't stay here again.

On positive side. Owner/manager was lovely. Breakfast was excellent. They accommodated my allergies something people never usually do. Mattress was comfortable. On negative side. Everything at the facility was very dated. Although part of the vibe for an old Victorian bed and breakfast house, there was definitely upkeep and remodeling that would have been appropriate. My bathroom had mold on walls from people not properly showering in tub. Shared bathroom needed recaulking and regrouting. Both were not well cleaned. Carpets were worn and stained. My bathroom curtains were stained and shredded.

Yeah no! Wanted to like it but just gloomy and scary. Curtains so dirty. Moved a chair and in the spot it sat all the stuffing fell out on the floor??? Outside was scaffolded and dark. Not a place I would stay again!

Disappointing and depressing. Stacks of news papers, garbage and dust littered the common rooms. Chairs were ripped and uninviting. Yes the house is historical and has impressive woodwork, but it is not well maintained. I wish the owners had some more help.

The good: the woodwork, pocket doors, high ceilings, bed frames, and fireplaces were all beautiful. Dave and Michelle, the owners, were lovely. Breakfast was great, as were the home baked treats that could be found throughout the day. The bad: there was only wine and soda in the fridge. No ice and no water. The common areas were cluttered. I don't care to stay someplace and see piles of junk on the floor. I stepped into the kitchen at one point to look for some ice for my tea and the cleanliness of the kitchen was very questionable. Food had been left out of the fridge on the counter, and it was the middle of the day. Against my better judgement I DID have breakfast the next day and I haven't gotten sick, so there IS that! The ugly: I am very sensitive to smells and there was a heavy presence of cat urine. I just couldn't escape it. i never saw a cat, but I sure did smell it! The curtains in our room were falling apart and they were all water stained. I could look past all of that, but when I discovered what the pillows looked like I was done and we left a day early. The pillows were not encased in a protective cover before they were placed in a pillowcase and they were all stained and disgusting, one even had a hole in it. As others have mentioned the outside looked like something out of a horror movie, but I obviously wasn't put off by it as we did check in. According to past reviews the renovation of the front porch has been going on for YEARS, and it looks pretty trashy.

The breakfast and snacks are terrific. The stained glass throughout the house is gorgeous! Everything could use a dusting.

The Hosts were great, the food was great, the Yellow room we were given was not the best. Peeking into other rooms, they were more our style but were were not given a choice. There are stains on the carpet, shredded curtains in the bathroom and one washcloth was had bleach marks and holes, maybe a rag got mixed in. While the furniture was antique and beautiful, it was dusty and needs a deep cleaning.

Very historical, so much character, fireplace in bedroom with a brand new fire log! Claw foot tub. Very thoughtful owners. Wine cokes cookies muffins. The bed was super cozy and comfortable! Best option over a hotel any day! Oh and the. Breakfast was fantastic! Also very reasonable priced. Right near the Mississippi River.

The history of the building was interesting and I really appreciated the woodwork and craftsmanship of the house itself. My room was quiet and comfortable. The hosts were friendly and helpful. They asked what I wanted for breakfast and when I would like to have it ready. Overall, I would definitely stay here again.

Really old house. Room was very comfortable and spacious. Bathroom was one floor down and the stairs were very very squeeky. I felt the whole town could here me on my way down in the silence of the night. Owner is a bery nice lady, checking in and out was very easy.

Room was much larger and had much more character and charm than traditional hotels. Very dog friendly. They provided a great home cooked breakfast included in the price. It was more quiet than in traditional hotels. It will be our first choice in the future when staying in Dubuque. Lots of street parking available. Owners have done a great job of maintaining this building’s original character, furniture, and fixtures while modernizing it. Beautiful new walking shower in our room. Some rooms had clawfoot tubs.

We had a very nice time. The property is rough on the outside and under repair. Quite charming on the inside. We got to see all the rooms and they had some real nice ones. We stayed in the library suite. Private bathroom but no shower. They have one upstairs that I was able to use. Furnishings are vintage and real cool. The property was built in 1883 so you must take that into consideration. The hosts, Michelle and David are great people. Probably the best breakfast I have ever had at a B&B. All in all, a comfortable stay.

We stayed for a few days at Richard's House. We enjoyed our stay very much, the breakfast was vast and delicious. The owners are very friendly. We stayed in the bedroom that you can see in the photograph, it is large and very comfortable with a very nice bathroom. I highly recommend the place. It was cost effective!

This was a last minute stay, and it turned out to be a fun, quirky place. This is a historic house, and there is a lot of work to be done on the outside, (and probably continuously on the inside as well!). But if you're looking for something different than a regular old hotel room, there is a ton of really interesting history in this house. The owners were very nice and accommodating, providing us with fun information about the history of the house, and the breakfast was delicious. It is also walkable to restaurants and coffee shops. We are so happy that we happened upon this place!

Great location to stay if youre riding in the area!! Really comfortable and relaxing. I slept very well!! I was in the yellow room.

The decor was fascinating and gorgeous! The stained glass windows were interesting and beautiful. But what really made this place special were the delicious breakfasts. So wonderful! And they easily accommodated my need for gluten-free meals!
