The Rifle Volunteer

Great locals pub / B&B with helpful, friendly staff and welcoming locals. Rooms were basic but clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was more than adequate with a good choice available. Parking on site also available. We will definitely use again.

The Riffle Volunteer, is a lovely old English Pub, The Manager, and The Staff, are Fantastic!! And went above and beyond. The Rooms are Clean, but basic and could do with a lick of paint to freshen their up. But apart from that it's a charming little tradition pub. The outside garden is lovely, and there is parking, but it's a small car park. But i loved it.

Good place to stay. It’s not luxury but it’s sweet, homey, and comfortable. The beds were very soft. Very friendly staff. Pretty good self serve continental breakfast. You have your own (hotel room shared) entrance to the rooms after hours. The pub closed earlier than the hours say online on the Sunday which was a shame since we were looking forward to some pizza but no big deal! Convenient walk into town which took about 8 mins to walk. Overall it was a very convenient, decent place to stay.

So essentially it is a few rooms above a pub, but it isn't awful, just not amazing and that is how I am basing this on (having stayed in hostels and five star I have to be honest about my review). The parking is fine, imagine you need to be in to ensure a space as quote small, we were there on a Saturday night where there seemed to be a party - sadly this meant check in was noisy and we couldn't hear much but the lady was really kind and nice so was impressed with her (and other staff friendly). Went up to room and one of the hottest days of the year and no fan which was far from ideal as needed windows open but the noise from the party was deafening with it open so really no choices on this front. Small bedroom but adequate however bathroom had nowhere to hang anything, no shelf for toiletries and shower tray didn't drain very quickly. The light from the streetlight directly outside shone through our window all night and the blind did little to stop it coming through the edges, maybe a curtain on top would help. The breakfast was actually fine, plenty to eat and drink but do not expect gourmet, however did a job as we were in a rush. Essentially the staff saved the day on this hotel as they are great but if I had to value what we paid over the worth it probably was a little further apart than I would like however we were tied with location and little choice in the town. If you want no frills and are happy to pay the prices quoted then this hotel will be grand for you.

Dirty cobwebs in the shower space, mouldy paintwork, dirty sink plug. No curtain in the bathroom which faced the beer garden! Bedside lamp and only socket in the room was near the foot of the bed. Car park motion light was above the external door which was next to the back door to the pub! I did a video but couldn't upload on here. The staff were great but the venue itself wasn't good at all.

Had a lovely relaxing stay. Staff / management were friendly, welcoming and attentive. Atmosphere in bar was great with plenty of friendly locals. Room was clean and comfortable and breakfast more than sufficient with a wide range of cereals, juice, cheese and meats along with toast, crumpets and croissants. With off street parking and a large outdoor seating area. Great value too. We will definitely be back

Very nice staff, unfortunately it was one of the most hottest nights of the year, no fan in the room and couldn’t sleep, not the hotels fault but a fan in the room would have been a help, but again nice pub and nice staff

This is a local no-frills pub with a few rooms for accommodation. It was ideal for our overnight stay. We had a few drinks in the bar, had a brilliant spicy pizza ( cooked to perfection) and enjoyed a pleasant conversation with a local worker. Breakfast was plentiful with food to suit all tastes. The bed was very comfortable and all programmes on the tv were accessible through TNT.

A proper pub, excellent facilities, decent breakfast. Clean and tidy, comfortable room. Pleasant staff. Ideal location for my needs too. Fine pint of Guinness.

On the plus side the staff were warm, welcoming and helpful. I was initially able to park easily in the small carpark to the side of the property. The room seemed perfectly adequate for a 2 night stay on my own. The first hiccup was when I asked if I could book for an evening meal. Was informed they only did pizzas and didnt have any pizza bases to do these at the moment... The room quickly got cold when I left the bathroom door open and I could then see that the window was letting the wind blow through. It didnt close properly and was covered in mould. Ended up putting a cushion over it and holding it in place with the blind. The toilet roll holder fell off the wall when I tried to place the toilet roll on it. The floor covering in the bathroom was split/cracked. When I tried to sit on the bed and push myself back on to it, it slid backwards (no carpet on the floor). The second time I sat on the bed, a wheel fell off. The landlord was very appologetic and sorted it immediately explaining it was a new bed and the wheel had just slipped out of the hole. Because there was no evening meal I dined out but struggled to park upon returning at 10.00pm as the "locals" had used the car park (because of roadworks and double yellow lines there was no parking along the roadside directly outside the pub nor in the side roads close by). Had to block everyone in the carpark and then wait up so I could move the car when the locals left the bar...

The room was fairly small, and quite basic, but the price was also very reasonable considering breakfast is included. Everything was clean, and everything worked, so as purely an overnight stay on a budget it's pretty much ideal. Not noisy, even though it's over a pub. TV good, shower works fine, comfortable bed, and the breakfast in the morning was also very good. They don't do a full English (fair enough at this cost), but have hot eggs and a very good spread on the continental side. Recommended.

Clean, friendly 2 night stay with good breakfast options (tea, instant coffee, cereals, yogurts, fruit, poached eggs, cheeses, deli meats, breads, croissants & crumpets). Room was spotless. Bed comfy. Shower good. Free offroad car park. No real ale but good locals pub up the road was recommended by Nigel the owner of the Rifle Volunteer.

Our stay at the Rifle Volunteer was lovely. The room was clean and warm and everything was to the highest standard for a building of its age. The staff were friendly helpful and accommodating and they also gave us advice on getting about the areaThe breakfast was continental, although there were some hot alternatives that you could help yourself to, so it was more than enough to satisfy any pallet. I would recommend this hotel if you are staying in Ware or visiting the surrounding area.

Good friendly staff, clean room variety with continental breakfast

Noisy, smelling pillows, on first impression seemed ok, but lots of let downs, very small double bed, small shower, nothing finished off, mouldy windows, dirty too.I could go with a massive list. Breakfast was diabolical, infact health inspector's need to visit, and would shut it down I am 100% sure, Not giving you the problems, its basic good practices. Would not recommend

Traditional pub, was great for a drink, relaxed atmosphere. The room we stayed in was very simple, basic and small. Individual room with toilet, very dated and run down with just a tiny sink, no other furnishings. Tins of cleaning products and fly spray on the windowsill. An overall stale smell in the room to mask an unclean smell and smell of cigarette smoke. Separate shower room with no window. Very dark and dinghy. Needs a full modernisation and renovation.

Sorry to say it was awful! Toilet didn’t flush. Had a karaoke event right under our room extremely loud. We could feel the vibration on the floor and on the walls and even on the toilet!! We were not told before we booked about it or we would not have booked!

Excellent stay, I had a compact but functional ensuite single room. The continental style breakfast was very good with lots of variety. If I'm in the area again I will definitely stay again.

One night stay. Nice room with separate entrance from main pub building. Comfortable bed. Good shower. Room is very close to the road and because the windows are old wooden ones which don't fit too well there is quite a bit of traffic noise. Didn't particularly bother me though. Would stay again.

The heating was off when we returned from an evening out at 11pm and the room was very cold which made it difficult to sleep. The Wi-fi did not work in our room

I stayed here for one night.It was okay the toilets was old had to flush,the breakfast was good the room was warm. And the place was in pub, it was okay for me because my Brother lived about 1/2 mile away. They need more stuff so you can your clothes to hanger. I had problems with the wi-fi.A part from that I may come back because it was cheap.

Overall, the stay was good. Couldn’t fault the staff - welcoming, friendly and very helpful. The accommodation was very basic and tired. Needs an update. Again, the staff were lovely.

Met by the very helpful landlord, Nigel. The Volunteer doesn’t pretend to be anything that it’s not. Very comfortable and efficient.

It was the cheapest B&B that I could find in the area but I wasn't disappointed. There were no major issues and I was provided with erything advertised. Also nice to have a pub downstairs for those that want it. The breakfast was basic but there were a few cafes within a 5 minute walking distance.

It was comfortable although the room was very compact. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a small car park but it was full on the first night. On street parking is quite limited. It is only a 10 minute walk to Ware centre which has nice restaurants and a river. Breakfast was serve yourself continental which included a microwave with eggs and baked beans. I would be happy to stay here again

This was the perfect place for me to stay while visiting family near by, Nigel and everyone at the Rifle were welcoming and helpful. If you’re looking for a clean, affordable “room at the inn” this comes highly recommended.

Cheap and cheerful accommodation, good welcome, excellent buffet breakfast and special diet well catered for but annex room fronted on to a busy, noisy main road. Only 10 minute walk from pub car park into town centre with good choice of evening eateries. Overall adequate for cost and would return again if in the area.

The room was pretty basic. The bathroom had no heating and was freezing although when we asked for an extra heater the hotel were very helpful and gave us one immediately. But there was no towel rail in the bathroom and no hand towel to dry your hands even if they’d put a couple of hooks on the back of the door it would have helped and it would have been somewhere to hang your clothes and bath towels. There was only one lot of soap none in the shower and this was left on the hand basin in the ugly cheap looking container it was bought in. I was so cold in the night I had to sleep in my jumper. The breakfast was only just adequate with only instant coffee and not full English. I don’t think it would take much to upgrade your experience just a bit more TLC and attention to detail and more quality products in the room and at breakfast. We were certainly glad we were only there for one night.

Warm friendly staff but if looking for comfort and more than one night stay then not really the place for you Met my needs for a short stay with no frills and if that’s what’s needed then not a bad choice Breakfast basic and again no frills
