Jolly Sailor- Fish on the Quay

A quaint old pub ideally located within easy walking distance of Maldon High Street. The bar/breakfast area was welcoming, and the staff were great. To get to the room I was staying in could be awkward if you were not nimble, due to the steep staircase from the staff area, but an enjoyable stay and a great breakfast. Very good value overall for a room in Maldon.

We stayed 2 nights. The view of Maldon quay from our room was excellent. Breakfast was fantastic. The staff were lovely. We felt the hotel would benefit from an update if possible as access to the upetairs bedrooms is appalling, through part of the kifchen which also disperses kitchen smells upstairs. The stairs are also very steep. Bedroom flooring (old lino) needs replacing as did the bed and headboard. The bathroom has been reburbished and was fine. Our room had air con which we didn't need. Parking in Maldon is difficult. Hotel location excellent.

Overnight stay for a wedding, all the staff friendly and helpful, with the rooms comfortable and functional. Only slight problem is that there is no parking.

The chef made special orders for breakfast. The quay and town have a great choice of alternative eating. The bathroom was good. The air conditioning worked very well, for heating as well as cooling. There are paid car parks a short walk away. Traffic is very quiet, out of season. There is a parking bay for an hour's free parking to unload. Accessibility in the building is poor. Corridors are narrow and low, and the stairway is steep and uneven, accessed through the kitchen. The bedroom needed maintenance - the bed moved while sitting up, because the headboard was loose. There was no hot water in the sink. The toilet macerator was noisy. The pub has no parking, and the local free parking fills up. The quay has early deliveries in large trucks. Despite the fame of Maldon oysters, we didn't find any anywhere!

But the room was poor, small, smelly, with a noisy saniflo toilet, a weak and rubbish shower, uneven floor, which didn't bother us too much but some people may struggle. Bedding and towels were clean although very old. Access is through the pub kitchen! And up some step back stairs. We had only booked on night, which was fine, the accommodation was very cheap, the premises need an update.

Parking can be a bit iffy, but we found a space nearby... better from October, when all the regulations ease. The bar was well stocked and we had massive dinners! Plenty of shops a short walk away.

Strange arrangement getting to and from your room. Clean and quiet, but the bathroom needs some work, wobbly toilet on a lean and it looks like it’s been replaced but no one could be bothered to tidy up where the old one was. And breakfast at 9am is just too late. In fairness, they did a work around with the evening meal to compensate, but overall an odd hotel. If you want a nice view though, go for it!

Breakfast and staff service were good, unfortunately everything else was terrible. Management forgot to tell kitchen there were guests on arrival date, so kitchen closed early and had to go to fish and chip shop. Room was very poor. White wall were obviously dirty in places and someone had painted over matt white white patches of silk white. Door lock wouldn’t work properly. Handle on “bathroom “ door was held on by a 3cm wood screw that stuck out by probably 2.75cm. Bare timber and mastic all around base of shower cubicle as plastic gone from base leaving at least 30cm by 20cm hole with bare plastic pipes. Dirty brown smears on toilet door frame. Wall behind toilet cystern and also near toilet roll dirty. Brackets to hold clothes rack and draw unit to walls pulled out of wall. But worst of all, black painted cupboards behind entrance door had loads of paint coming off and had a mirror hanging off the top cupboard door. When I opened the cupboards to put in cases as room was so small, they were literally filled with broken pieces of plaster board and an old sink. Unfortunately we had nowhere else to go and no time available to hunt for an alternative. Thankfully we were only in the room when we were asleep and staff and breakfast were good. Told food staff about the poor the room, they said they knew and were sorry and had told the owner in the past, but he doesn’t care. Maldon is a lovely place and worth a visit, boat trips excellent, park is great, but stay somewhere else.

We are a group of 5 ladies who between us booked 3 rooms at the jolly sailor. The purpose of the trip was to attend the Maldon Soultasia To start with the property looked very quaint and welcoming The manager Babs was welcoming and very friendly. However as she showed us our rooms we were struck by how tatty the lobby & stairs looked there were loads of flies around the lobby where the coffee machine was. The rooms were old as expected but there was dust everywhere. My bed looked clean however two of the friends sharing a room found grubby sheets and a foreign receipt under the pillow which clearly showed the bed hadn’t been changed. This bedroom had a bathroom across the corridor which had a dirty toilet which after speaking to Babs got cleaned. Nevertheless the cleaning equipment was left outside the bathroom door which created a trip hazard neither ladies in this room could sleep in the bed. In fact one actually drove home to middlesex at 5.45am she was disgusted I had to wash my cup and saucer in shower gel before I could use them this property, at the very least needs a deep clean and regular cleaning. I have never stayed in a hotel, paid £212 50 for one night and felt so cooty because of the dirt and grime Babs and the bar team were very friendly and were great front of house. But, the story behind the scenes is different. We gave our feedback to Babs and the owner offered us a free lunch as comp we rejected this offer asking for a refund. The owner said no

Location excellent however accommodation needs total refurbishment. Cleanliness an issue and although old property we felt a good deep clean was needed. We could also hear mice or something scuttling within walls which was very unsettling.

Nice bar and hotel. Room was very nice and clean with a good view of the boats and river. Friendly and helpful staff. A good full English in the morning also. Would definitely stay there again.

Had to walk through kitchen area to get to rooms. Wasnt given our own bathroom. Heard mice in ceiling. Towels provided were soft. Coffee and water in room was nice

The Jolly Sailor was a big disappointment from the moment I arrived. The sub title of ‘Fish on the Quay’ conjured up a feast of fresh fish dishes on an exciting menu. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case! In addition, the establishment offered parking which isn’t the case! The parking is on street parking which, if I had known, it would have stopped me from making the reservation. Co-incidentally, my car was damaged in the street! The accommodation is about as basic as a hostel. The room was cold, unwelcoming, basic and had a fairly revolting smell about it. The floor was covered in linoleum and the bed was barely comfortable. The bathroom was tired and in need of serious refurbishment. The noisy klargester randomly set itself off throughout the night. The box-work between the toilet and shower was falling away from the wall and you felt (possibly erroneously) that the whole area was grubby. Dinner was again disappointing. The ‘Cromer’ crab salad was more likely to have been pasteurised crabmeat and for some inexplicable reason the brown and white meat had been mixed together and placed back into a previously washed and re-used shell. When booking the accommodation, I paid for breakfast but, on enquiring about the breakfast hours, I was informed that breakfast was served from 9am. This was absolutely no use to me as I had to depart at 8am. To get a refund, I was told to take it up with the management. Unless you are desperate, don’t get fooled by the location.

Lets just say you would stick to the carpet when walking....Need I say more???!!!

Room not very clean and needs a total revamp and clean up. Bathroom needs a repair and re-paint. Toilet seat broken. No towel rack. Had to get to the room through the kitchen, stairs very steep and no accessable rooms. Needs a different route to get to the rooms. View is beautiful. Staff very helpful and friendly and courteous. No breakfast served as the Chef was ill. But got a refund for breakfast somewhere else. Nice pub downstairs. Would we stay there again?? No!! It was overpriced for what we received!! !!

The best thing about our stay was the staff, very attentive and engaging, although this is the winter time and I couldn’t say this could be the same at the height of the season when they would be more busy. The room was comfortable and pleasantly decorated with a nice view over the Hythe Quay and River Blackwater even though the tide was out both mornings. The bed was a little too soft for me and my wife, and the green L.E.D. in the emergency light was very bright and illuminated the room a lot. The en suite was clean although shower head could have done with a descale and there wasn’t any hot water in the wash basin tap. Evening food service seemed to stop quite early but this could have been because of lack of trade due to the time of year, but we did have a few drinks on our last night and the bartender was again friendly attentive and engaging which could be because we were two of four customers in there, probably due to the time of year and the cost of living crisis.

We stayed for one night. Being an old pub the building has matured and shows it via the slight slope of some floors. Our room was small but perfectly adequate and we had a great view of the Hythe from our window overlooking the Thames barges. The room has a TV, internet access and a kettle with plenty of tea and coffee. The shower worked well and the bed was clean and comfortable which is pretty much all you need to know. We enjoyed celebrating my wife's birthday in Maldon and for the price we paid for the we didn't expect five star and our only complaint is the lack of car parking in the vicinity of the pub.

The room was tiny. It was cold. The shower did not heat up and dribbled out.

The staff and food was great but … on our last night the fire alarm went of which saw us standing in the cold for almost an hour and no staff response. We had assumed a member of staff was on site during the night but it turns out not to be the case. Once we (the guests) confirmed there was no fire we obtained the numbers for the managers and spent the next half an hour trying to get hold of someone. When that failed we had no choice but to call the fire brigade to see if they could deactivate the alarm which they came out and did. The following morning we received vague apologies and promises that the management would be in touch with regards to compensation but we are still waiting. This made us all concerned about had the fire been real what we would have done as we then realised that we only had one escape route as the front fire exit was a locked door which lead to a further locked door.

The staff were the most helpful and friendly we have ever met in any accommodation we have been .

It never happened! We arrived on Saturday 14th June to find pub had been shut by Environmental Health on Friday 13th, citing a rat infestation & general lack of cleanliness. We had to make alternative arrangements. Later, Babs, the manager, rang citing electrical failure as reason for closure & apologising. She could have told us on Friday. I rang back several times & left messages so that we could discuss the situation. There was no further response from her.

The location was excellent with lovely views. The food was excellent and well percented, the staff were all extremely helpful and the manageress was excellent and went out of her way to help.Will definitely stay there again as it had a very friendly atmosphere. Thank you all. Diane and Brian.

What an amazing fined, a random decision for a couple of nights away for the new year. What a quirky place, fantastic staff amazing breakfast and there main menu all at great prices. Ciarian, went out of his way, service with a smile, along with Ben and the manager Thank you for a lovely stay highly recommend you and hopefully we will return in the summer.

The evening meal and service there in the bar was great. No issues. During the night we were disturbed by a fellow visitor who had got locked out and despite a suppossed key code being displayed in our tooms we could not find a key pad anywhere on the outside of the building. Also we were disturbed to realize that there eere no staff in the pub overnight. What would we have done in the event of a fire??? Breakfast we skipped when we found out that the cook was not even arriving till 9.00 and we were not even offered a coffee while we waited. Very poor.

We had an amazing 1 night stay. We had parked up the road just off high street (24 hour car park) as parking limited (permit only outside) at the pub but was easy to find car park and walk down to the pub was a couple of minutes. When we arrived in the pub we were welcomed by Babs and Summer. Summer showed us to our room, you have to go through a staff only area and as it is a pub the ceilings were low but we liked that as it makes the stay different. We were told all about the late night procedure once the pub is closed how you get in and out and given emergency numbers if needed. The stairs up were steep but that comes with staying in an old pub. Our room was lovely (room 3) had air con, nice comfortable bed and small but adequate bathroom with small bottles of shampoo, shower gel etc which is a nice touch. Water provided and tea and coffee biscuits in room. We went for a stroll in Maldon and when we returned Ebony was at the bar, she was very friendly and welcoming. We sat outside overlooking the water. This pub is in a lovely setting. We had a great nights sleep and breakfast was amazing with a great choice, served again by Babs and Summer. Overall our stay was excellent and I couldn’t fault all the staff they were great and very friendly. We will be back to stay again.

I really liked this place because its such an historic building in a fantastic location. I particularly liked that the building had been built in the 1600's - I had been reading Daniel Defoe's account of coming to Maldon in 1700 and eating turbot, which he said was very good in the town. I was pleased to find turbot on the menu at Fish on the Quay - maybe he stayed here! We had a lovely view of the sunrise over the river and the Thames barges outside. It was bliss to wake up to the sound of sea birds in the morning. The pub wasn't noisy at all. The landlady Babs couldn't be more welcoming.

Food was fantastic. Great menu with loads of options and cooked/presented to perfection! Staff very friendly. Room was nice with a comfy bed and good amenities. Shower didn't switch on reported to staff who ensured another shower was available.
