Tru by Hilton Rapid City Rushmore

I stayed there because family members who like it, were staying there. I would call it a “no frills” hotel. My room didn’t have a drinking glass, a pen or note pad. The desk reminded me a school room desk. It was very clean and bright but just had a Youth. Hostel feel to it. Breakfast was very good and the lobby area was also nice. I think what soured me on it was paying $161 when my family member said she thought they were paying about $80 for their room. To me it certainly didn’t seem like a $161 room or hotel.

This is a fine place to stay, especially outside of the tourist season. The TV had a personalized "welcome" message on the screen--a nice touch. The breakfast is very good (including sausage and omelettes). For some reason, there were no glasses in my room, so I took a couple of cups from the 24-hour coffee service in the lobby. No big deal. This was my second stay at Tru, and I'm likely to come back again.

We arrived on a late flight and needed a hotel for one nights rest. This hotel is clean and fairly convenient. The rooms, beds, and pillows are comfortable. My only complaint is that Tru properties don’t have amenities like cups (plastic or glass- none!), ice bucket, or a coffee pot in the rooms. We asked the front desk girl if there were ice machines on every floor and she said there were. We got to our room to find out there wasn’t an ice bucket or cups. She failed to mention that. My husband went back downstairs to get those items. Typically not a huge deal- but after a long day of traveling, it was the last thing we wanted to do. I’m not sure we will stay at Tru hotels in the future because of this one little thing.

I take no pleasure in writing this review but must be truthful about the cleanliness of our room. We arrived late after a long day with family at the hospital. We had a friendly staff person check us in. We went right to bed so did not pay attention to the condition of our room. In the morning we found gobs of dog hair on the floor. There were also crumbs in the corners and all over. Then I went to get into the shower and saw two long black hairs on the shower floor (not mine, for certain). I always travel with Clorox wipes so I got out my wipes and upon wiping the shower floor found the drain clogged with so much disgusting hair. I did ask to speak to the manager on duty. Emily was pleasant but when I asked her to come look at the room she could not because she was also the front desk person. I showed her pictures and she apologized, somewhat. She explained they are a pet friendly hotel do that sometimes happens. Well that explains the dog hair but not the hair in the shower. She said she could not make an adjustment to what we paid because I booked through Hotels.com. I would have to start with them and they would have to contact her and they usually don’t do that, etc. etc. I do have a Hilton Honors number so she put a FEW extra points on that account. Pancake machine was broken in breakfast area which did not affect us but should be mentioned. Waffle machine was available at connecting Hampton Inn. This is not busy season.
