Very good value and service. Beware if you are relying on satnav to locate. Because of busgates it took a bit of finding. Council pay and display parking nearby but overnight only to 5am however street parking available after 6pm.

Good hotel to use for a night on the town. Located near the station and bars. The room had everything you could need, tea making and a fan which is great as you do not need to open the windows as you must appreciate you are in a busy city therefore it can be noisy. Parking is at the back which is a pay and display, you can pay for overnight parking but the issue with the car park is your ticket runs out at 8am and you can not renew or extend it. My advice would be if your not an early riser park at Bond St it will be more expensive but is only a short stroll away.

One night stop for work near by. Car park was a disappointment as couldn't park the Van due to height restriction. quite noisy as windows are old, but the food and the pub are good, beds comfy and a reasonable price

As a woman travelling alone, I did not feel safe in this property as the door to the rooms above the bar was propped open during the day. Access was from a car park which was easily accessible to all. Convoluted stairs to get to room leading to disoriention. Fire alarm in room had plastic bag tied over it. If there had been a fire, I would have struggled to get out safely. Not unclean inside the room, but grubby and poorly maintained.

Given the price it was fine. Website says parking is available, be warned is is not.

Terribly noisy, awful room (my room was the fire exit route and someone tried to break in while I was in there), I left after an hour and had an almost full refund. The ample parking at the rear of the property is pay and display for up to 3 hours only, except for overnight 5pm-6am. If you do stay, don't expect any sleep due to the noise from the pub, or a lie in as you have to pay the car park again. Would definitely NOT recommend.

Conveniently located. Room basic but comfy. Main criticism is that the bathroom was much too hot. I nearly burnt my hand when I accidentally touched the heated towel rail while reaching for the toilet paper. I would have preferred not to have had to climb three flights of stairs to the room. Especially as there is no handrail on upper level.

The bed sheets was stained and I found a big black hair in my bed there was no heating and the room was freezing I did ask about putting the heating on but it did not happen I felt uneasy with the the entrance to the rooms being a aluminium staircase to the rooms which was open to the public car park (no door on ) and room was not refreshed the next day pup food was good and staff was nice

The staff were welcoming and friendly. The room was modern, impeccably maintained, and spotlessly clean, which exceeded my expectations. A delightful surprise was the espresso machine in the room—such a thoughtful touch! I enjoyed my short stay and would happily return in the future.

When we arrived the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room we had was en-suite and very clean. The tea and coffee facilities were great (proper coffee machine in the room). The bed was really comfortable, which made for a good nights sleep. The only thing I would recommend to those using a satnav or maps to find it would be, put the actual address in not just the postcode as ours took us to a different location. Other than that would highly recommend The Ship!!

The room was clean and fresh and we had a good nights sleep. We didn’t eat at the hotel. Car parking was a problem as they don’t have a car park of their own, only a council one which you could only pay for until 5am the next day.

I had a really pleasant stay at The Ship. The room was compact but spotless and well-organised, with a comfy single bed, en-suite bathroom, TV, and a side cabinet stocked with tea, coffee, and biscuits—such a thoughtful touch. It had been a long time since I’d slept in a single bed, but it was surprisingly comfortable and perfect for a good night’s rest. I’d definitely stay again and would recommend it to other travellers looking for a clean, cosy spot with all the essentials.

Good value for money however as a non smoker I didn’t like the stale smoke smell. No curtains was a bit weird to close off street lights. Bathroom shower head and around door could do with a clean

The property is just 3 mins walk from the main Train station which is extremely convenient. There is only one cafe and a big tesco with rest of the non edible shops around. The room we had was dusty although toilet was clean, it was tiny. Durable for one or two nights. The wooden cupboard doors magnetic hinge was broken and just too many pieces of wooden furniture in there that could provide a modern look rather than dull and really dusty look and feel as the glass was not wiped clean. The window was locked so we could not open the window for air and including our friends room which they were suffocating in there boiling hot. The worst is that its really noisy till 12.30 am and then you have street people shouting and screaming almost till 4-5 am if unlucky. If you have the room below, the people above walking and talking can be heard and creaky which if you are a light sleeper, forget about getting any sleep. This is good for you to party and sleep drunk to not hear any noise. Food in the pub was average but the desserts were great. Service is really friendly and good. Location is a bonus

Brilliant location for city center. The room was spotless, stocked with a lovely coffee machine, water and biscuits. Gorgeous shampoo and shower gel. The bed and pillows were soooo comfy. The pub had a good vibe and the food was lovely. Honestly couldn’t fault it!

Pay and display car park behind pub however can only park from 2pm to 5am and then need to leave for an hr before return. Unfortunately room smelled of cigarette smoke. I’m not sure if people in room next door had been smoking and it was coming through bathroom vent or if there had been smoking in the room. Also there were hairs in the bed and sheets were stained.

I stayed in a very clean, tidy and tastefully decorated room, with excellent en-suite with shower. The room was in a modern extension behind the pub, which had various nautical paraphernalia but due to my plans, I didn't get to try out the food or drinks. I had no noise issues. Convenient 5-minute (or less) walk from Chelmsford station. My only disappointment was that breakfast wasn't available, but that probably says more about my planning.

The propert was lovely, our room was modern and up to date. The beds and pillows were so comfortable and clean! The bathroom was so lovely and clean. I loved that you didnt have to go through the pub to get to the rooms although there was a walkway into the pub at the bottom of the steps if you wished too. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

I enjoyed. You check in at the pub below, but the staff was real friendly. It was a nice, spacious room, with a tub( Which I like It). It’s a bit noisy & the heater was always on. But it’s a good location - near the railway station & you walk to the shopping area. I would stay there again.

I got a train into Chelmsford for n the afternoon ready for a hospital operation the next day . I met with a young guy at the bar who was staff .he was friendly helpful and a nice intro . The Room was a nice temperature. They gave me an upgrade so I had a king-size bed which is great for my height and difficulty with my legs . Everything was clean and pleasant . Shower and towels really good . Coffee machine and TV . There was a good chair for me to sit and read a paper . There is only single glaze windows so it is noisy on the front street . But that stops about 12 midnight . If I was going out for a meal and some drinks it would be fine . Anyone who is a light sleeper before 12 I wouldn't advise this room. But it suited my needs fine . The bed was really comfortable and it looks like a recent refurbishment. It was a 10 min walk to station and I use crutches . I had a pick up from the taxi the next morning early . There seems to be restaurants and takeaways close by for choice and it's close to town centre . The price was excellent and to me it was good value for money . I didn't try the food at the pub because of my medical circumstances. But I would have done so . I managed the stairs to the rear of the property to get to the toom as there was an adequate rail and good robust iron staircase . I am having a knee replacement. I would have given it 4 stars if it was quieter Although it didn't bother me too much

Good room, but noisy at night. Need some double glazing because got almost no sleep with the shouting, fights and arguing outside the window from everyone pouring out of the clubs.

I had an ok stay but there’s a lot wrong with this place. The windows don’t close properly in the room so it’s cold and noisy (next to the main road). There was no hot water in my room. The radiator didn’t work in my room. There was an adjoining door in my room that leads into another room just a wardrobe placed in front of the door… I could hear both sides of a phone conversation from the neighbouring room. The pub is decent. I think for the price….. stay somewhere else.

Bar team were great, pleasant pub, but room was very basic, no en-suite, so midnight walk to the loo.

Information was not good, staf were not interested and provided little details of stay. Doors to rooms are key operated self locking so if you us shed bathroom or toilet at night make sure you carry key with you, I went to toilet and forgot key, locked myself out with no one to help had to stay in the cooider untilll 6.0 am when the cleaner in the pub arrived.

The ship was very disappointing. The bathroom almost flooded when using the shower because of clogged up hair in the drain that had not been cleaned. The bedsheets were stained. A fire alarm then went off at 4am and no staff on site to support us. We were due to leave for London at 6am so no point trying to get back to sleep. When we asked for a refund, hotels.com told us the ship had refused to pay it. Steer clear of this property. The worst service I’ve had.

More review may seem a little unfair as I’m normally used to staying at medium to high-end chain hotels. Checking is at the bar, the staff with friendly and accommodating and showed me to my room. There was no issue with any noise coming up from the pub at all and the room was comfy and functional. The ensuite bathroom is a little on the small side, and there is no heating in the room at all, there was a radiator, but nothing heat wise coming from it at all. The pub itself is situated at crossroads in the town and because the windows are single glazed and old style sash windows noises to be expected, however, two of the windows didn’t close properly and the one in the bathroom rattled every time of vehicle passed. The bed was comfy as pillows, however, due to the traffic noise I was awaited at 6:30 when the buses started to run. It was fine as a one night accommodation, where I wasn’t spending much time in the room, but it would not be my ideal choice to return. Please bear mind, I have been quite harsh with this review, but also truthful, but I’m reviewing it against where I would normally stay, a Crowne Plaza or a Hilton Hotel. The pub itself seem very busy with a lot of people eating there and seemed like a good atmosphere, because it is in the town. It is ideally placed for walking to & from the shops and the numerous other bars and restaurants that are around it.

As a solo traveler, I can honestly say I felt safe and comfortable at The Ship. It’s so well placed for getting to the station, restaurants and shopping in Chelmsford. The room was bijou but completely adequate for a short stay.

Only downside is that the area is noisy at night and first thing in the morning when street cleaning is done, but we had expected that due to the locality. I would definitely stay in the Ship hotel Chelmsford again. the Ship hotel was close to the bus station and the railway station, locally and easy to access. In future I will book earlier to get a room with en-suite facilities, they had only 2 en-suite rooms only, I was too late to book one of these rooms. The staff were very friendly, food was very nice and well presented, and the offerings from the bar were superb.

Great hotel/pub. Perfect location for everything you need. Food was very impressive but had a ton of chips that I really couldn’t eat. Also same with my girlfriend’s dinner. Fish pie was amazing full of flavour and plenty full.

Very nice clean room, mine was a single and perfectly enough room for me. The pub and food were good, 10 min walk into the City is great. Would have been nice if the coffee/milk had been serviced for the 2nd night. Would I stay there again? …. definitely yes, if the price is right.
