Mayan Monkey Tulum - Social Hostel

Unique place. Very large room. Nice bar and fun entertainment at night. Close walk to other resturants and shopping.

Stayed for 3 nights in a 12 bed dorm which has it's own bathroom with two toilets, showers, and sinks. The dorms also have a locker for each bed (make sure to bring smaller than average lock). I forgot to pack a lock and the front desk had them available for 7 USD. The staff all spoke English so if your spanish is a little underdeveloped you will be okay. The rooftop pool and bar area is nice, in the evening there are djs. Be warned you will be able to hear it from your room and it goes until 1am so if you are a light sleeper and not much of a partyer it might bother you. First morning I took part of the Cenote tour that the hostel offers. The comman space inside is large and comfortable. The volunteer guide walked us to the closest supermarket so we could get ourselves snacks, drinks, or pesos of needed, then walked us to the collectivo stop to then go to the Cenote location which has 3 stalactite cave cenotes, one you can repell down a rope into. If you're familiar with collectivos and speak even a little bit of Spanish you're better off checking out cenotes yourself, but it was a good way to meet some people at the hostels. I do not recommend the chichen itza tour the hostel offers, look up 13 Baktum tours to see the negative reviews. You're better off going with a different company or arranging your own transport to chichen itza. Try to arrange yourself at least 3 hours in the park to be able to see and appreciate all the ruins without rushing through.

The property is really nice with pool, bar and kitchen all separated from the rooms. It helps when you want to relax as there’s literally no sound that you can hear from the party outside. The dorms were almost clean and they provide fresh towels anytime you need.

I felt welcomed and at home at this hostel, even though I only stayed for a week. The staff were friendly and helpful, and they always worked very hard. Every day and night there was some fun event to attend, whether it was music, trivia, dancing, or trips to the cenotes. I was sad to leave and I look forward to returning!

This is great place to meet people, it is part hotel with private rooms and also a hostel with dorms. It is also a party atmosphere until about 1a.m most nights, with themes.

It was okay. I’ve stayed here before and it was much better last time. There were a few travelers working to live there and it had a pretty chill and homey vibe. It felt like a hostel There is a full blown staff with security now. This is a hotel, not a hostel at this point. The drinks are all US prices, you are not allowed to bring a beverage in with you. Security will make you drink it on the steps or pour it out even though you have a private room. I would have rather stayed in a real hostel than deal with the odd rules this place had. You want to get super fckd up and spend a bunch of money, have the music so loud you can’t talk to the person next to you until late hours? No problem. You want to bring a beer from the restaurant below or that you got from the store next door in with you to your private room? ABSOLUTELY not. It’s an okay place to stay if you’re 22 and trying to rage in Tulum. Otherwise find a cheaper hostel, or just book a hotel for the price. OH and my partner ended up with a super weird rash that got diagnosed as pool folliculitis back home from their murkey, dirty pool.

I am highly recommending the Mayan Monkey Tulum to anyone who's traveling to Tulum and surrounding areas... The place is conveniently placed in order to be close to the center of Tulum and Tulum beaches Staff and Management are very friendly and helpful, always ready to assist you during your stay wich with all program that they have such as trivia,karaoke,Dj's nights and happy hours will make your stay enjoyable and memorable for long time.... Eco flex shuttle from airport did not have my booking even though I paid via the Mayan monkey website and received a booking confirmation and funds were paid. I arranged w eco flex in person once arrived anyway since he staff there viewed the email confirmation from my phone and still arranged a prompt shuttle. Thanks to Roy at eco flex! I ended up booking directly with them for my return shuttle and it was cheaper than the hostel so still worked out. My king size private room had a leaking a/c unit for two nights before they moved me to a new room, which didn’t leak but had a water stain in the exact place the old one had leaked….so seems like the leaky units are common. The drinks and food were ok on site but limited options. I still ventured off site for novel and cheaper meals. I’m in my 40s and still managed to make great connections with other guests however I found the social events and vibe repetitive after only a few nights. Off site excursions were good but also somewhat confusing to arrange/bookings were made at front desk but sometimes confirmations were not provided to the visiting attraction or too many processes in preparation. I stayed in Tulum, I heard from others the Cancun location is even worse so I won’t bother visiting any other locations given the price of my private room could have been the same but with better service and quality at any other local hotel.

Great and clean location

First off I will never stay in Tulum, Mexico again!! The federali police are everywhere!! You can’t even enjoy the beach in peace! The hostel is about 40 minutes away from the airport. Ride the bus its alot cheaper than a taxi or anything else! The bus is about $12 compared to the $50-$60 the taxis will try to charge you. You will catch the bus into town then catch a taxi from the bus station to the hostel which will be about another $12. The hostel has so many steps to climb with no elevators! I hated it! It is NOT disabled friendly! So if you have issues with walking I wouldn’t do it! I had to carry my luggage up and down leaving and coming. An absolute nightmare! I rented a scooter for a couple days to get around. They have tons of rental places to choose from so choose wisely! The beaches are far so you will need some form of transportation. But the beaches suck right now because they stink really bad because of the seaweed. They say this time of the year its like that. People will try to cheat you out your money if you don’t understand spanish or pesos so be aware! The hostel is mostly for a younger crowd. Book at your own risk! It is really clean! The housekeepers are wonderful!

Hatte einen angenehmen Aufenthalt in meinem Privatzimmer. Es war sauber und wurde täglich geputzt. Kontinentales Frühstück ist ok. Gibt ein Müsli und Toasts. Weiteres alles gegen Aufpreis. Personal war ok. Wurde schon freundlicher bedient. Wichtig Fahrrad oder Scooter mieten. Bin zum Strand gelaufen und das ging auch völlig in Ordnung.

The vibe at Mayan Monkey Tulum was definitely boho. I loved how clean, spacious and modern the king sized room was. The amenities were fantastic for a vacation while also providing spaces for connecting when need be. I also loved the proximity to everything by bike, walking and for tours.

I had a lovely stay at Mayan Monkey Tulum! The breakfast was generous, fresh and always delicious, which was such a great way to start each day. The reception staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my stay. I’d especially like to thank Emmanuel, who kindly moved me to a quieter room when I asked – I really appreciated the care and quick response. As expected from a hostel, there’s a lively atmosphere with music and a DJ in the evenings (usually until midnight), but it was never a problem for me. It’s all part of the fun vibe, and the bar staff were always smiling and welcoming. What stood out to me most was how personal the experience felt. I was only there for five nights, but many of the staff remembered my name and even my breakfast order – a small gesture that made a big impact. They also offered free guacamole and margarita classes, which were a fun bonus. My private room genuinely felt more like a hotel than a hostel – clean, stylish, and comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the accommodation. The location is central, and they offer bike rentals and paid excursions, which makes exploring Tulum really easy. I would absolutely recommend Mayan Monkey to anyone visiting Tulum – whether you’re looking to meet new people or just enjoy a few days in a vibrant and welcoming space.

Staff were friendly and accomadating.

I absolutely loved staying at this "hostel" which honestly is like the glamping of hostels. The staff was incredibly nice, helpful and knowledgeable of everything to do in Tulum, other towns, and the hostel itself. The noise from the parties wasn't overwhelming and they always finished right on time. The beds were comfortable and clean. I had a medical emergency in the middle of the night and Lorenzo, the security man and Salvador, at the reception, helped me so much. I felt incredibly safe and accompanied the entire time. I am still so grateful to them for what they did and the fact that they kept checking up on me. You can walk many places and take the local Colectivo to the hotel zone. You walk downtown and it's super safe! I really enjoyed staying here, highly recommend it.

The staff was wonderful. The property seems to be well kept. Breakfast was terrible. But it’s loud, like techno music at 1230 in the morning loud. The crowd is very young. I’d recommend this place anyone UNDER 30.

This is based on my personal experience. I never stayed in a hostel before this. First and foremost, power goes out frequently and breakfast can be delayed so if you have an excursion then plan ahead. Rooms aren't as spacious for the 12 bunk beds that are in there. I liked the lockers and was happy about that. Sink was tight. There was 2 toilets and 2 showers. AC was broken here and there. Lastly, there was an incident with a man assaulting a woman on the property. People saw. The managers did not do anything nor was the police called. The man who attacked left the property the same day so he didn't get caught. Food at the property isnt that good except for breakfast. The rest of the restaurants you have to walk to. You get what you pay for.

This hotel was in a great location and also was close to the beach. The staff were especially pleasant and quick to assist. The music at night was loud and was the only downside to my stay, otherwise it was good!

Beautiful solo room that felt more like a hotel, but plenty of opportunities to make friends at the pool and bar. Some games and events at the bar to make friends. Restaurants nearby. Nightlife you do need cabs mostly. Bathroom was nicer than mine at home! Enjoyed my time. Would consider other Mayan Monkeys.

Nearby road construction is a pain but the Hostel itself is in a great condition. You have to compete with construction trucks and Taxis for parking spots.

Long walk from other areas for tourists in Tulum
