Stayed 2 nights

The location was excellent with a reserved parking space. We stayed in a “superior double room”, the Shropshire suite. It was okay but not what I would classify as a superior room. The bed was good and, although tiny, the shower was good. The carpet in the room was dirty with large black marks and an iron burn right inside the door. The wardrobe held housekeeping supplies- buckets of cleaning stuff and packs of linen. Not ideal for storing our clothes. The shower grouting and seals were mouldy - could be easily resolved. There was a skylight window in a sloping roof which was covered with dirt and cobwebs which we cleaned away. There is no blind on this skylight and so from 5am there is bright light directly shining on the bed. There did not seem to be a host or manager. Every staff member we came into contact with was polite but no one asked us how things were or if we needed anything the whole two nights we were there. Overall a disappointing stay.

The pub was very welcoming on arrival ,the room was spacious and at the front of the hotel. The shower cubicle had mould around the tiles , this could easily be clleaned , the room was situated at the front was very noisy especially at 5.00am when the bin men are emptying the bins. The pub is centrally situated . I would stay again but would ask for a room at the back. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful

Generally the Golden lion was ok. The room we stayed in could have done with some improvement, a wardrobe, shelf in the bathroom and a general overhaul. The breakfast was good, no complaints. However there was a big negative. We stayed in the button suite, I cannot comment on the other rooms, but it wasn't a good experience. The reason for this is what occurs on a Friday and Saturday nights. Next door is a night club. The music starts at 2000 hrs and finishes at 0030 hrs. It was bad enough in the bedroom but going into the bathroom was something else. I thought I was actually in the club the noise was so loud. At 2300 hrs I rang downstairs and spoke to a member of staff who explained where the noise was coming from and that it used to be the case that it finished at 0200 hrs. Boy did I feel lucky. This was Friday/ Saturday ,so we decided we would leave Saturday as we couldn't stand another night of disturbed sleep and awful music. We had breakfast, spoke to the manager who apologized and took our leave. I must make clear that I do not hold the pub responsible for the night club or indeed the music, but things could be done to alleviate the issue . Either do not use that room on those nights or at least forewarn those unfortunates that are sleeping there the possible issues. . I am of course out of pocket and had a weekend away partly ruined.
