The Catrina Hotel

The hotel looks like it's been recently upgraded. It's pleasant. The rooms are good size. There were a couple of problems with the furniture - one of the cabinet doors was off the hinge and the drawer guide was sticking out. The water in the shower was hot, but not in the sink. It was still a nice place. They have a great outdoor area and are located close to 92 and 101 making it a convenient location.

Easy and smooth check in. No key card or keys needed, a code is sent to your phone and you enter using keyless entry. The room was spacious and there is plenty of parking.

Overall, good hotel. Wish they had EV charging. No breakfast. Rooms were average size, well appointed with nice bathroom. Would stay here again.

We didn’t drive but the parking lot was easily accessible with lots of lighting. You can walk to just about anything you’re in the mood for, so the hotel is in a great area for that. We went to the movies, ate at a handful of restaurants, went shopping, groceries, etc all on foot. The room was comfortable enough, about as expected. The bright lights outside made sleeping hard, we had to pin up extra sheets and our jackets to all the windows to try to block it out. Our door was really hard to open and close, we had to shoulder slam it open and shut every time, so I did feel bad for whoever was next to/ below us because it was not a quiet effort. Overall it was a good hotel for the price, easily the best combo of affordable/accessible in the area.

Motel was good value for money, parking was easy, good motorway links to areas around the Bay Area and beyond. No staff but virtual check in was fine, only downside no safe in property or no storage for bags with no late checkout

I booked this hotel because it was convenient to where I needed to be. I’m very familiar with the area and it appeared to have great reviews. Unfortunately there is no person on site you check in virtually. There is no staff on site that speaks English when you do find someone. There is no elevator. There are no ADA provisions. We had no one service our room the first day the second day there was no hot water. We had to work virtually to get moved to another room that was downstairs and had hot water unfortunately I will never stay here again, even though it is the most convenient to where I need to be

The stairs the take you to second floor has a bad smelling. And doesn’t look clean at all.

Dirty !!! Just dirty !!!! Dirty shower , hair everywhere , bugs flying , and dead bugs on the walls and ceilings , broken TV remote , TV would come on and off and scroll through channels by itself . (I believe remotes from other rooms coming through to my TV) staff barged in on us twice . Would knock and quickly type in code and try to open our room door ! Just unprofessional and dirty . I would like my money back

The room was very poorly cleaned. Hair was all over the shower and the floors were very dirty.

This was a great alternative to spending a ton of money for a hotel in San Francisco. It's quite near two Caltrain stops that take you straight into downtown SF. The rooms were clean. The beds were comfortable. The air conditioner worked great. Although it's right on a major road, our room was really quite quiet. And there's lots of great food in downtown San Mateo. Good ratio of value to cost.

Check in was easy. The girl at the front desk was polite and professsional. Honestly thats the only good thing about this place. When I entered the room I was immediately blasted in the face by the smell of a wet locker room. Like the inside of a pool locker room without the chlorine. 100% positive there is black mold in here. Black stuff around the shower, tile, and caulk. I wiped the corner of the shower with a tissue and thick black sludge came off. The only way this is possible is by not cleaning it for months at least. Had to leave the windows open to air it out, but the smell persisted because it was coming from the bathroom. After I took a shower on the first night the bathroom did not dry out at all. There are serious moisture issues going on and the fancy mirror lights and nice tile are not going to fix it. Im certain there will be issues in facility in the future regarding mold. The aesthetics are modern and updated but the decore is just a bandaid slapped over the deteriorating rooms. I was there for 5 nights. My room was only serviced one time. Beds are the squeaky and loud metal-framed type. Location is great which is why I stayed here. But the owner should really invest in a proper cleaning and actual remodel instead of slapping new tile and mirrors over water damage.

The room is very dirty.

I've stayed in this facility several times and this time it was not what it used to be. The paint on the walls was peeling, mold in the shower, holes in the ceiling, uneven floorboards, no desk area, no soap at the sink. There was garbage on the floor next to the cans and just overall didn't seem like the place was being kept up. Really disappointed.

The room was spotless and service efficient. Well priced place and convenient location for visiting the San Mateo area. I suggest the property add a desk lamp to make working in that area a little easier. The staff are friendly and check in/out very easy. Would return here!

From the pictures I saw online , I thought I was gonna stay at a very nice place. The outdoor look like it was a futuristic, nice remodeled hotel . I didn’t get a good night sleep because of the framing that was on the bed. The metal frame would squeak every time I would move from side to side .

The hand towel fixture was broken. Not enough hangers to hang up your clothes. No proper lighting fixtures. Only two reading stand lamps, so the room was very dark. No access to local TV channels.

Air conditioner was completely broken

The walls are not soundproof; I could hear the TV in the room next to me and a party/gathering in the room beneath me. Turning on the wall unit fan helped a bit at night but not in the morning. Also the floor in my room could have used a good swiffer wetjet or something, and I would not recommend walking around barefoot before getting into bed lol. Otherwise the room is super secure and the check-in process was very smooth, and I really appreciated the convenience of having my room code, wifi password, and other necessary details in one email that I could reference anytime. The bed was also pretty comfy!

The stay was fine. Bed was pretty comfortable and room is fine. But, the windows have no screens. Location is very good.

Check-in was done via a video call. Unfortunately the agent had a thick accent and the video stream was choppy, so it was difficult to understand him, so I had to ask him to repeat himself a few times. Room was pretty dark, only one overhead light and it was right over the door. Half the room was lit by small desk lights, that were not bright enough to read by. I was locked out of my room because the electronic keypad battery died. Without a live person onsite after dark I was stuck for 30 minutes unable to get into my room.

Overall it wasn’t bad. The walls are a bit thin so you can hear everything outside and in neighboring rooms. Also our room did not have curtains, only plantation style shutters which let a lot of the light in from the lighted hallways.

Jorge was amazing and made me feel welcomed. There is no broadcast television, you have to use your own streaming service, so that sucked. The bed needs some serious WD40 action, it squeeked loudly every time you move. The place is cute, clean and modern though.

I was a bit nervous at first about virtual front desk but I found them very responsive polite delightful. The facility is updated. Well lit, quiet if you're off the road. The housekeeping staff is top notch. It feels safe.. No Frills just what I needed. Close to family and friends.

Great no frills motel for business trip. Clean and comfortable, in room coffee pods. Virtual receptionist was very polite and got me checked in quickly. Will stay here again

Easy check in and friendly staff

It was AWFUL from check in to check out! DO NOT STAY HERE! The check in process was with AI gal in India! She was hard to understand. No one was onsite to speak with. Had a problem with the TV that didn’t work and they expected to charge us more money to move us to another room. We refused to pay more! Hotel was more than 3/4 empty! They finally agreed to have us move. We had to take all our stuff (we had tons as we were on the road for 3 weeks and I have a bad knee) back downstairs and back upstairs in another room in another building! We wasted almost 3 hours with arguing and finally moving! We asked to speak with someone and were told someone would be there around 11 or 12 the next day! Needless to say, we had to be on the road way before that

Nobody on site for this checkin. Had a video screen asking for my I.D. and credit card and the person had a foreign accent. I was not comfortable with the unusual arrangement and will never stay at this Hotel. We went to another normal hotel.

Check in is done remotely by staff located in South America. Check in counter was broke so it took over 2 hours to check in.

Absolutely the worst hotel check in experience I have ever had at this Clarion hotel. Upon arriving there was no one in the office checkin/reception area. Guests are supposed to use a screen “kiosk” which connected me with a lady in India. They had processed my payment but then experienced “technical problems” that went on and on and on … I requested a first floor room but she said their system showed there were none available… but I was actually there in person and it appeared there were several available. They continued to have “technical problems” so I asked the lady to simply refund my credit card payment and I’d find a different hotel. She said she wasn’t authorized to do that… only her manager… and the manager wasn’t available. I called Capital One while all of this was going on to flag the account transaction. Clarion did charge my account… has not refunded it… and now the whole dispute process will have to be played out. To not have a human being present at your hotel guest check in is ridiculous.

They need to have someone at the front desk at all times. There’s a virtual check-in terminal that takes you to someone overseas. They’re not helpful. Pretty long wait to check in. When an actual in-person human helped us out, things moved quicker. Probably a 20-30 min wait to check in and only 3 of us in the lobby

If you are looking for a convenient stay before you fly out of SFO on an early flight, this hotel is perfect. SFO is a 15-20 minute drive away. The hotel has motel style rooms but it is super modern, clean and very comfortable. The access code room entry is easy and convenient. We never saw any staff. If you stay there, don't plan on an easy restaurant search. You will have to drive to get anywhere and the road is very busy. Definitely eat first or bring dinner back to your room. Although the road is super busy, the room we had was well set back from the road and so it was very quiet. We would definitely stay here again as a night-before-flying-out stay.

Nice spot in San Mateo if you need a quick layover. Jack’s is a great restaurant and is walkable

The Catrina Hotel is a good option for visiting the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Close to major freeways, immediate neighbourhood is alright, and a large mall is nearby. The rooms are generally fine however our bathroom window had considerable mold and faced the alley/parking lot of the business next door, which led to some late night and early morning noise. Other than that, no complaints.

Really exceeded expectations here. Traditional motel that has been superbly updated and renovated. OK, so it’s expectation management, but it convenient, v comfortable and spacious. No food options, but plenty nearby. Would use again and recommended

I have stayed at Catrina several times, and it is my go-to when visiting family nearby. It’s clean and modern and affordable. The location works well for me, and there’s a ghost kitchen nearby to pickup takeout, or Heidi’s Pies for some good old-fashioned comfort food with lovely human interaction. If you can deal with the virtual front desk (they’re helpful and friendly!) it’s a good place to stay. As a tea drinker, I really appreciate the electric kettle.

Bed was very comfortable. Hot water tea kettle didn’t work. Keurig also didn’t work. Would have liked 2 chairs. Small donuts were good in the morning.

The staff was nice and the room was clean and tastefully renovated. There is on site parking. In fact I was able to back into a spot right in front of my door. The hotel is within walking distance to a lot of restaurants, too. I’ll be staying again.

I’ve stayed at the Catrina several times while visiting family in the area. It’s clean, comfortable, affordable and convenient. Checking in, with someone on video is a wee bit dystopian, but it works. I recommend grabbing a bite act Heidi’s Pies nearby for some good old fashioned human interaction
