Stayed 1 night

The Royal Oak was clean and tidy , everything you would expect for a pub. The room was a nice size and was comfortable enough. The staff were really helpful and very pleasant. The Royal Oak is quite central so you can easily walk to everywhere in the small village. The breakfast was traditional English breakfast and was of standard fare. It was very cheap to stay for the night and would recommend if passing through Chapel area.

Stayed 1 night

Well after being up and about for 15 hrs I needed a good meal, so I checked in and went straight to the bar for some food. Great selection of food which I had starter and main course. Fantastic food. Then up to my room with my bags. Obviously grabbed the complimentary shower gels and time to get wet, only to find both shower gels 1/2 empty like they’d been left from previous people. Still had enough in my bag to fulfil the job. Next it was coffee time, ah ! No spoons, how can this be missed ? So improvised and cleaned a sachet under the tap and used that. The next day, so on commencement of starting my morning ablutions I found I had been left a small amount of toilet paper. 20 sheets to be precise, so military skills came into play to preserve some for later. How can these 3 basic things be missed ? On the plus side the bed was comfortable and the radiators hot.

Good value but en-suite very small (room 6) and door lock almost impossible to lock or unlock a serious issue especially in the event of a fire

Stayed 2 nights

We chose this hotel as it was conveniently located in the town and close to Kinder Scout for walking. Unfortunately the hotel is a disaster waiting to happen with many health and safety issues, even aside from the quality of the rooms, bedding and other facilities. Fire doors are constantly wedged open, even up to the second floor. The room I stayed in had a faulty lock which meant once locked it was almost impossible to open - needless to say I slept with the door unlocked - far from ideal. The manager came to investigate but just shrugged when I explained the risk. The rooms themselves are outdated in terms of decor and furniture, and the beds and bedding are totally worn out - probably the worst hotel bed I’ve ever slept in. Whilst the hotel staff were friendly enough they seemed oblivious to any of the issues, and more concerned about selling us beer and breakfasts. Even allowing for the relatively low cost of the room, this is not good value for money and I would definitely not recommend staying here - it needs some serious investment to make it safe, and more pleasant to stay in.
