We liked to stay there over the weekend. They have a beautiful garden overlooking the river, that was the best part! Room size was good and the bed and pillows comfortable.

A short overnight stay at great value. The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable. It's not a four star hotel so don't expect toiletries and hair dryer, but a warm welcome, comfortable bar area and good parking for free.

Windows of the bedroom are only single glazed so there is a bit of road noise. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom adequate. Staff friendly and welcoming, breakfast very good and evening meals are typical pub grub at pub grub prices. Good size car park.

Good stay, reasonably priced and very convenient for cycling along the canal nearby. They have good bike storage. One small recommendation for improvement; if a curtain could be placed over the entrance to the room, to block out the electric light from the courtyard at night.

The pub and staff were great , the bathroom had black mold on the ceiling , extractor van did not work in bathroom , wallpaper peeling next to bed ,window left open , i know this is to air room but it was raining so there was a puddle inside on the window sill , although july weather was awful wet windy and cold, no heating

Nice building , staff pleasant and helpful , food general pub food , breakfast very good . My only real issue was the cleanliness , there were dead flies in all the windowsills , the shower heads were full of limescale and looked grim , shower surround had previous guests hair on it , chipped cups for coffee in the bedrooms and wine glasses in the bar cloudy and looked unclean , sink in bathroom had a build up of limescale , the paintwork on walls and doors all need redoing looked tatty , i am not high maintenance , and have stayed in many Greene Kings , this sadly was not upto the standard of the others we have stayed in .

Loved this place, great character & the staff was really welcoming & friendly. The bedroom was large and the bed comfortable. The bathroom could have been cleaner though, felt like they rushed through this one. The food in the pub was good and the breakfast was wonderful with a great selection and a nice cooked plate, everything felt fresh.

The staff were all lovely, couldn't offer enough help. The restaurant food in the evening had good choice and what we had was good quality, we enjoyed this, we also ate out in the evening where there was a good choice of different restaurants to choose from. I am not one to complain but our stay was for 4 nights of which our room was only serviced once, we had to use towels provided for all of our stay. Housekeeping needs to be managed as the carpets by the skirting boards were full of dirt, you could see this standing up. Room has net curtains which required washing. I am not picking at this with a microscope, it was obvious. Linen for beds and towels were spotless and looked new. I just think it is attention to the smaller details that need picking up. This hotel is friendly, attractive and comfortable, I would recommend it to my friends and family these smaller issues would not put me off.

I chose this hotel because I was on a business trip in Newbury and closer hotels were over my budget. I didn't need frills, just a place to lay my head for the night as i knew i would be arriving late night. As such, I was not expecting much in terms of facilities as it's a budget hotel. What i wasn't expecting was the room to be dirty. The carpet was full of dust bunnies. I don't even know how that happens, it looked like a weeks worth of rolled up dust or the hoover bag burst, it was all over the room. Because I checked in late reception was closed so I couldn't even change rooms.The smell from the drains was awful and I had to spray my pillow with perfume to try and cover the smell but it didn't work. I couldn't even watch tv because the light attracted these tiny gnats. The bedding did not smell fresh. I had bought my own towel and ended up using it as a bed sheet as I couldn't bear the thought of lying down in someone's bed sweat. Yuck! It was a miserable nights sleep. I seriously contemplated sleeping in my car. I wish I had read the reviews a little more carefully as I have since seen others complain of exactly the same things. What a shame this could really be a nice place if they sort the smell and cleanliness

Staff were very good but housekeeping leaves something to be desired, our room (27) had issues throughout the room, drawers had hair, dust chocolate wrappers in them, under the furniture and on the oak beams were thick with dust and debris, bathroom wasn't much better, shower was dirty, taps, shower had not been cleaned and polished, the ou outside of the rooms had lots of cigarette ends outside the door and the carpark would benefit from a sweep up

Uncomfortable bed, very hard mattress, nasty lumpy foam filled pillows. A couple of blown lightbulbs, smeary mirrors, toothpaste residue left by a previous guest on the bathroom shelf. No toiletries or box of tissues.

Great location in historic coaching inn. A little frayed around the edges but some would call that character. Biggest bugbear was that for the second time in as many stays I had a downstairs room and every time the person above me moved across their floor the floorboards creaked very loudly.

Plenty of parking, very friendly staff. Room was a lovely size and bathroom had a bath and shower cubicle, which was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately the heating wasn't working in our room and ended up with a temporary fan heater, that was the noisiest ever! Breakfast ok, but felt bacon and sausage reheated.

Lovely hotel with helpful staff. I stayed in room 8 which was huge with a lovely roll top bath and rain shower. Good food for the evening meal and breakfast and friendly helpful staff.

The hotel is an old property with our room in an annex attached to the main building with access via a courtyard. Our large first floor room was comfortable although a touch noisy with road traffic in the morning.

Room was ok very nice, I was in room 24 be careful if your over 5 foot 8 in tall as rooms have very low ceilings, also housekeeping very poor, had to see manager after 2nd night as room had not been cleaned, no fresh towels , my bin overflowing, no toilet rolls etc.

I didn't stay at the hotel as although I left a number of messages on the hotel ansaphone querying whether the room I had ordered online was suitable for my 98 year old Mum they couldn't be bothered to call me back. In the end I couldn't take the risk that the room might involve a climb up lots of stairs or only have a bath so I cancelled the booking losing my money. Very unsatisfactory. The hotel behaved in a very arrogant manner and they need to get a decent switchboard.

Bath as badly stained by limescale and not actually a bath! Just a water collection point for the shower. Wash hand basin cracked. Waited a very long time to have my dinner order taken at table. Order was incorrect but was ok in the end.

My stay was ok, other than the fire alarm going off at 3am. No explanation, no apology. My room was adequate and the fried breakfast was good. Service at breakfast was ok, but as there was only one person covering breakfast, there was no greeting and I was very much left to sort myself out.

We had a pleasant stay at the hotel including attending a lovely wedding reception. Our bedroom and bathroom were clean and tidy. My only criticism would be that the pillows on the bed were too hard - one was not high enough, but two were too high. We had an issue with our car and therefore couldn't stay both the nights we had booked but the hotel staff were very efficient and were able to refund us the second night.

It is a very nice historic property with a great location, and not too expensive. I have not used the dining room, just needed a place to overnight within walking distance of station.

Impressive old coaching Inn in a good location. Nice inside with lovely grounds backing on to The River Kennett. Restaurant prices fair and meal quality was good.

Windows of the bedroom are only single glazed so there is a bit of road noise. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom adequate. Staff friendly and welcoming, breakfast very good and evening meals are typical pub grub at pub grub prices. Good size car park.

Good stay, reasonably priced and very convenient for cycling along the canal nearby. They have good bike storage. One small recommendation for improvement; if a curtain could be placed over the entrance to the room, to block out the electric light from the courtyard at night.

This is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed at, and I've stayed at a lot of hotels! We had such a lovely room that had the stream running past the window. The beds were super comfy and the room had lots of plug sockets which seems rare in hotels! It was a Greene King but the food was better than any I've been too and reasonably priced. Service was quite slow considering how quiet it was but the staff were very friendly. The pictures online don't do this place justice, a real hidden gem!

Loved this place, great character & the staff was really welcoming & friendly. The bedroom was large and the bed comfortable. The bathroom could have been cleaner though, felt like they rushed through this one. The food in the pub was good and the breakfast was wonderful with a great selection and a nice cooked plate, everything felt fresh.

Rooms are nice, if a little small, but historic old building. Toilet cover was too small for basin and the shower curtain positioning designed to hem you in and make the shower feel tiny. Food in adjacent pub not good (and literally half the things on the small menu not even available). Breakfast similar - my smoked salmon was brownish and I think microwaved from frozen (or tasted like it). Probably best to eat out in retrospect

Bath as badly stained by limescale and not actually a bath! Just a water collection point for the shower. Wash hand basin cracked. Waited a very long time to have my dinner order taken at table. Order was incorrect but was ok in the end.

Plenty of parking, very friendly staff. Room was a lovely size and bathroom had a bath and shower cubicle, which was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately the heating wasn't working in our room and ended up with a temporary fan heater, that was the noisiest ever! Breakfast ok, but felt bacon and sausage reheated.

Op zich een mooi hotel maar oud en niet aangepast aan deze tijd. Het ontbijt was ronduit slecht en de presentatie ervan mogelijk nog slechter. Bediening en onthaal was wel supervriendelijk, dat maakt veel goed maar dit hotel gaat zeker niet meer eerste keuze zijn bij een volgend bezoek.

Room was excellent and staff very helpful. We booked in in a Saturday to be told breakfast was 10 on Sunday. On Monday we arrived for breakfast after 9 to be told that breakfast finished at 9 on weekdays. The staff were excellent and still provided a cooked breakfast.

We have stayed here before, as a budget hotel, it was fine, a bit grubby in places and the hotel looked tired! Breakfast was good and consistent. The car park! Not many available places to park, that were not under trees, car was covered in pigeon poo!
