I have stayed maybe a dozen times here over the last 8yrs or so. I will not be back. I should say the staff are lovely but everything else? DREADFUL! Mouldy bread at breakfast, only one staff member cooking, serving, clearing and covering reception. The OJ had been left out uncovered all night. No mugs or glasses. Rooms had no tea bags, shower gel. Holes in the ceiling. This hotel used to set standards now it fails most of them.

I arrived late, but the staff were accommodating and lovely. Didn't really see that much of Doncaster only there to catch a train.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t a good experience. The hotel is a lovely old Victorian building that is really showing its age. The downstairs areas are fine, but everything else from the lift, to the rooms, to the corridors are rather tatty and dated. The trip started with me walking into a near riot with angry former staff that needed the police to be called. The route to my first room smelled of cigarette smoke. First room I rejected as it was hugely noisy, tatty, peeling paint, broken window catches and the bathroom smelled like a blocked drain. I was promised a refund but have not received anything so far. Second room on third floor was quieter and better maintained but still dated. Here I had to complain 4 times that there was no hot water. It took 3 nights to partially rectify. Not good at all. There was also a tatty old housekeeping trolley left in the way at the top of the stairs. Oh yes, and the room wasn’t made up on one occasion resulting in a late evening trip to wait in the lobby while it was done. The hotel seemed permanently short staffed with used breakfast dishes littering the tables well after breakfast had finished. To be fair all round, the room, although dated, was clean and spacious, bed was comfortable and the duty manager Marlo(w) was very friendly and tried hard to sort things out. Sadly, this hotel need a huge amount of investment and renovations to bring it up to modern standards.

Booked 2 privilege rooms however on arrival were given standard rooms, without explanation. Wouldn’t have minded if the standard rooms had been clean and had usual Mercure toiletries/tea etc but it did not. The shampoo bottle had been filled with water, the pump on the conditioner and body was were broken and were almost empty. There was half a toilet roll on the reel and no spare. The shower tray was cracked so the non slip mat had been left down and was filthy. The glasses were upended in a piece of toilet roll. The shower controls were broken. The wardrobe shelves were thick with dust. Wallpaper was peeling off the walls. The tea tray did not contain any tea. The room smelt and was dirty. Thankfully the sheets were clean as there was no one on reception to raise a complaint with. Not usual Mercure standard!
