Stayed 1 night

We stayed for one night, and unfortunately, the hotel was in poor condition. There was a strange smell in our room, and I discovered spots of what appeared to be mould inside a drawer. The corridors smelled of cannabis and damp, with hotel trolleys and linen left out throughout our stay. The communal areas were cluttered and needed a thorough clean, while much of the furniture was tired and in need of replacement. Although some carpets and beds have been updated, the overall impression was one of neglect. I’ve been visiting Wigan on and off for around 20 years and remember this hotel from its days as the Mercure. It’s disappointing to see how much it has deteriorated, especially as the building has so much potential. I appreciate that it was a budget hotel, but basic cleanliness and maintenance should still be a priority. Sadly, I wouldn’t stay here again or recommend it in its current condition. It is not a three star hotel.

Driving into the large car park I saw countless piles of fast food waste which meant the area was used as a gathering ground at night. Hotel still has Mercure signage which I’m sure mercure will not be happy with. Reception area is massive and unmanned with a number to ring which at 3pm, typical checking in time, went to voicemail initially. I was ‘assisted’ by some fellow guests of the recently homeless variety who were occupying the restaurant area with their plastic bag picnics. Reception arrived, not once looking me in the eye and through very poor English gave me a keycard to a 3rd floor room. I made my way past the conference rooms full of piled high junk furniture to the lift and along the corridor to my room dodging the many piles of used bedding and towels. Room was dark and dingy, very low light levels and felt dirty. Desk full of cigarette burns and worn carpet. Bed was clean although the sheets were slightly too small and the 2 single mattresses were a different height causing a pronounced ridge in the bed. Kettle, TV with Netflix and clean towels were a surprising addition. Easily opened adjoining room doors were not. From my experience, I would suggest that one floor is used for paying guests ( later in the evening the car park contained many contractors vans) and the non paying guests are on a different floor. I was informed the chef wasn’t available so no breakfast on offer. The hotel is town centre, 2 minutes walk. Would I stay again… not a chance

No-one on reception for check-in, had to call the hotel and tell them I was waiting (12 minutes). Toilet paper on the floor in the bathroom on arrival. No breakfast laid out the next morning, no-one available to serve and no-one waiting to be served, assumed it must have been cancelled. For less money you can use a Premier Inn and at least know what you are getting.

This hotel has certainly gone down hill. The room smelled of stale tobacco and was shabby in appearance. There were cigarette burn marks on the desk. I wonder if the smoke alarms actually work!! The printed fire safety instructions behind the door were partially missing. The bed sheets were clean and so were the towels, which was nice but to be expected in any accomodation. The assistant on arrival was helpful when requested for our rooms to be close together. I won't stay here again and thankfully only had to stay the 1 night.
