The Donatello Hotel

We loved our stay at The Donatello. Great location, one block to Union Square and all the transport is within walking distance to get anywhere. Room was well laid out with a basic kitchenette. Loved the gym and spa facilities. Our favourite was the club lounge, gorgeous area to enjoy a complementary coffee. Highly recommend.

Wonderful location in middle of union square. Can walk everywhere. Note: quite a few homeless in the area but no issues. Hotel was friendly, helpful and we encountered some initial problems with our room (heat and drain) but they quickly fixed by moving us to an equal room. The spa floor is beautiful. The valet and security are terrific and so friendly. Rooms are roomy and comfortable. Very nice stay. Note- they do a vacation resort sales pitch at checkin but not pushy if you aren’t interested, and great perks if you are.

Great location one block off Union Sq. Older hotel but substantially remodeled with many amenities like club level, saunas, roof top patio. Italian restaurant and separate jazz club on second floor. Super nice staff. Could use window upgrades as single panes do not block out much city noise. Bring ear plugs!

We had a great stay at Donatello in their remodeled rooms. They offered a lot of space, were clean and staff was friendly as well. The gym was small and the building is too small to provide breathtaking views from the rooftop terrace but this was not an issue for us

Hotel rooms are more spacious than most in San Francisco and include a loveseat or couch. The property has unique amenities on the rooftop, including an indoor lounge, a small, hot tub indoors, and an area to walk around and view the city outside.

For the price, this is an outstanding stay at a convenient location. Decent amenities, including jacuzzi and rooftop club room, but you\'re not paying for any unnecessary amenities or frills. Wonderfully friendly staff. The neighborhood is "transitional"--halfway between Neiman Marcus and the Tenderloin. If you cannot tolerate homeless or struggling people near your hotel, don\'t stay here, and don\'t visit a modern American city.

Nice affordable property that is conveniently located to many dining and music spots. The room was a nice size and had a fridge and microwave. The menu for the on-site restaurant didn't look appealing or well priced, but many options nearby to offset that. The rooftop is a nice place to unwind. We would stay here again.

Excellent accomodations. Friendly staff. Club level was a great bonus. Jacuzzi was perfect temperature. Would definitely stay again.

Parking is $50 tax, plus tips every time when you need your car (in and out privilege) ONLY Valet.

We are very pleased with the hotels. The renovation is very clean and beautiful. The room is quiet, clean and has everything you need and even more. Thank you very much to the hotel management! The SPA is very small.

The staff was polite and friendly. The room wasn't cleaned properly though and the quality of the bedding and linens provided wasn't good. The air vent in the washroom didn't work and there was no drinking water available in the room, just an empty jug and you'd have to go to a different floor to fill it up. Don't recommend this place.

We had an amazing stay at the Donatello. The staff, cleanliness and location are all things that would make us come back. Special shout out to Pam at the concierge desk, she makes amazing recommendations.

Comfortable place to stay for a couple of days, and good location to explore the city. Very clean and convenient. Nice staff. You can hear some noise from outside, but nothing that kept us up at night. We would happily stay there again next time we are in San Francisco.

The property was great: very clean, safe, and lots of old character with modern conveniences. Parking was a little expensive per day, but did feel like the safest option. Our only real problem was the noise at night! This hotel is right downtown, so you will likely hear sirens, karaoke, saxophones, yelling/screaming, loud motors, racing cars and even some basic home construction. The only way I can recommend this hotel is if you come equipped with good earplugs.

1. Hair in bed upon check in 2. Clogged shower drain 3. Dirty towels: big chunk of ear wax easily visible on replacement towels brought to room. Brown spot in bath towel, hair in 2 out of 5 towels 4. Requested towels because they didn’t provide a room refresh when they said they would, every other day. 5. Pillows tired and need to be replaced.

Good location, nice and helpful staff but been without Internet for three days wasn’t very good.

the lounge on the top floor was spectacular. The stay was ok but we were in a room with a window that had a broken hook or clasp so had a 1" gap without closing. Between a concert ending (at August Hall) and the garbage and EMS trucks wailing all night it was unbearable. When reporting this at 6am I was just given a shrug and a question as to what time I was going to check out.

Very disappointing hotel to stay at. Their internet was shut down the entire two days we stayed and you could only text them. Their phones didn't work and still don't so you could not talk to them. And the bathroom had no fan so the small bathroom steamed up quickly. Also, we left a feather pillow on the bed and they could not find it the same day we checked out. It was an expensive pillow so it is obvious someone kept it.

We were on the eighth floor - at night there was quite a lot of street noise audible and regular emergency vehicle sirens were not conducive to a good night's sleep

We loved the club lounge. Coffee and tea was available all day and until 10:30 pm. We would meet our friends there in the AM and plan our day. Some evenings they have a happy hour and that was nice too. The staff was wonderful, the place clean. Our only complaint was that they were having wifi problems so we were without it for a day or two. I would stay there again.

Big room, a bit dated…

Great location and all hotel staff very friendly. Ideal for downtown shopping and transport as close to trams, canoe car and trains. Only disappointment was windows are only single glazed and so let in a lot of street noise. Rooms are big, well furnished and comfortable. Kitchen area was great as meant could get own breakfast in the room.

The Donatello is a favorite stay for us when we visit San Francisco … it is conveniently located. It’s an easy walk from the BART/Muni station. The rooms are spacious and clean. But the reason why we keep coming back and back is because of the outstanding staff. They are friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to accommodate and assist.

I enjoyed my stay. The concierge Pam was so warm snd pleasant. She made you feel at home. There was one woman in particular that was upstairs and worked the reception desk at the spa and also at the front desk reception that I did not care for her attitude. When she was asked a question she was rude and unfriendly. Because of her I never went to the spa. Otherwise everyone else very nice especially Pam.

The Donatello was beautiful and the property was pretty. The staff was very pleasant. One thing I did NOT like was having to listen to the spiel about time-share and feeling pressured to participate.

The property is located in a great location of downtown SF. The reception and concierge staff were very friendly and professional. One young man at reception on Sunday night found out it was my birthday and he sent a nice bottle of red wine to our room. What a wonderful touch! Everything was good about the hotel and all the staff were great. Only thing we did not like was being asked to see the small elderly lady, next to the front desk, who was supposed to give us more information, but seems like she was mainly interested in getting us to attend a timeshare presentation. We were in SF for only the weekend and didn't have time to attend the presentation, which I know from other presentations can be very time consuming and can have very high pressure sales tactics. We told her that we were not interested and her tone changed completely from "pretending" to be friendly to being outright cold. Did'nt really appreciate being referred to the elderly smalll lady after the front desk had already given us all the info we needed. Other than that, we had a great stay and would return back to the Donatello.

Until my final morning, I would have given the Donatello five stars in every regard, hands down. That changed. The problem I encountered was at check-out. They have a 10am check-out time, which is a little early, but definitely not ridiculous. However, many might expect it to be the more standard 11am, as I did. I would suggest they explicitly let guests know, verbally, about the check-out time upon check-in. I did realize early that morning that check-out was 10am. I packed, made a pretty quick trip to their fitness center, and returned to my room no later than 9:50, just enough time to take a quick shower and zip my suitcase. I was already locked out of my room at 9:50: my key card no longer worked. So I had to go down to the lobby, where I was met by attitude and noticeably curt behavior from a previously friendly desk attendant. She had to make a a new room key. I made it back to my room by 9:58, trying my best to hurry. (Of course, it still was before check-out time). At 10:02, housekeeping knocked on my door to get in, even though I had the "do not disturb" marker on the door. In the end I checked out by 10:15. A 15 minute grace period doesn\'t seem unreasonable. Of course, I would have checked out just on time had I not been locked out of my room. It was a stressful process and I must say left a bad taste in my mouth. Despire it being a really good stay until then, it was enough to make me not wish to stay there on my next trip to San Francisco.

First time staying here and absolutely loved it. Pam the concierge was so sweet and welcoming. Perfect spot near everything.

The hotel was clean & we felt very safe staying there. The night staff were fantastic. Very friendly & helpful. Bob was very patient & kind letting my nephew help with the luggage. I feel he went the extra mile for us. We appreciated his kindness. The day staff could take some tips from the night staff.

Centrally located for seeing San Francisco the kitchenette has real dishes and silverware in addition to microwave and fridge. Very clean and quiet walkable to Union Square and Powell St BART station

The stay here wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great either. The building is old, so the walls are thin and the windows aren’t sealed great. You can hear almost everything that is going on outside and through the walls. We were on the 5th floor which was above the restaurant which was loud so we had trouble sleeping. The rooms are huge which is nice, and it was a very convenient location. Outside the hotel there is a lot of homeless people so be careful.

We chose this hotel as we wanted to stay in the downtime part of San Francisco near to Union Square. It is a great location, just a short walk from the Powell Street BART station and MUNI trains as well as the southern stop for cable cars. It is a 30 minute walk from the Ferry Building and the promenade (Embarcadero). We had a room which had a small kitchen area with fridge and microwave as well as a good size bathroom. It was very comfortable and we slept well. The staff are very helpful and the concierge was happy to share thoughts on places to eat and how to travel around the city. That said, we decided not to use the Hop on Hop off bus and opted for MUNI day tickets. She also showed us which area to avoid as there is a lot of homelessness and poverty in the area to the West of the hotel. There is a communal relaxation area at the top of the building from which you can get complimentary tea/coffee. There was a small pool but we did not get to see or use it. We were very happy with this hotel and would be happy to stay here again.

We stayed here for a few days but I loved everything about it. The staff was very nice and accommodating. I felt safe inside the hotel. I really liked that at night they locked the doors and the only way in is with your key card for your room. The area of this hotel is located on the outskirts of the tenderloin. I feel like it’s located in a little better part of town than other hotels. It’s very convenient when you are walking all over San Francisco. We took the muni everywhere & it was only about a 5 minute walk to each bus stop around the area. It’s very close to the bart station & has a shopping center around. If I ever come back to San Francisco I would definitely stay here again. The room was very clean, the AC worked amazingly. Overall my stay was excellent. My only bad thing is a few hotels down the block there was a protest every day & it started pretty early in the morning so that was a little annoying but not the hotels fault.

This was a great place to stay! It was very close to the city transportation and shopping. At night, the area to the south was a bit sketchy but in order to enter the hotel at night, you have to scan your key card so that made us feel way better. The room was very large and clean! Definitely would love to stay here again in the future!

Absolutely fantastic experience! Our room was ready 3 hours early and we were allowed to check in. The staff was so helpful and attentive. We loved the large room, beautiful bathroom, and the 1500 club on the top floor was simply outstanding, with hreat views and a beautiful place to relax. Had dinner at the restaurant with live Jazz, enjoyed the jacuzzi, and the all-day hot beverages was such a treat! The location was so convenient, walkable to lots of locations, shopping, yransit, cable-cars. Will definitely stay again!

Sirens heard easily at night that kept waking me up. The restaurant staff was very friendly and accommodating. Would be nice if the hotel had some kid friendly food options. My 17 year old even had a hard time picking from the menu. Definitely a more upscale restaurant. I found it delicious however.

We expected a rooftop bar and restaurant which was not the case. Very expensive restaurant which extremely small and a 4 stool bar.The hotel itself was beautiful and comfortable beds. The front staff and bell hops were extremely friendly.
