Cliff House Inn

Beds were comfortable. Lounge chairs were comfortable. Oceanfront was nice. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The Shoals restaurant food is just okay. Inadequate number of parking spaces for hotel guests, because some are reserved for restaurant parking only.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cliff house inN! The location was splendid. The staff was cordial and very helpful. The pool was immaculate and the dinner at the restaurant was delicious! Continental breakfast was OK but could’ve been expanded a bit.

Parking was challenging. Room was tiny but sufficient and clean. Dining was EXCELLENT. Great dining staff. Superb views from dining room and pool areas. Epic views all around. Would ask for the rooms on 2nd and 3rd floors with HUGE windows that look out on the ocean. WILL stay there again.

Amazing views of ocean. Pool was nice and warm, but also next to restaurant diners (so not private). Nice breakfast, but no salt available. No elevator, and very limited parking. Far from Ventura downtown/city and other restaurants, but not too far from Carpinteria [10 to 15 min drive]. But if you are looking for ocean views and quiet, this place is great. No stores within walking distance, so you need a car, or bring your own snacks!

The views are breathtaking. Slept like a baby with the windows open listening to the waves crashing. All rooms have a view of the ocean. Beach is not accessible but you have the pool. Watched dolphins and sea lions. Seagulls were a hoot, don’t leave your plate unattended LOL, they will steal your food. Breakfast is continental, only protein are boiled eggs. Lunch menu is typical American and fair price. Dinner is a little pricey. Brunch Sat and Sun. Monday restaurant is closed. Rooms do not have a/c but you don’t need it. Rooms have fridge and TV. Really enjoyed our stay!

The views are wonderful!!! It is an inn so nothing super fancy but comfortable, nice decor, clean. Does need some work on areas from wear and tear. Right off freeway but can’t hear it. Pool is nice just have a restaurant on facility where tables are set outside right by the pool so a bit awkward to swim while people eat. Other than that would definitely stay again!

Enjoyed the quick easy check in, ocean view room, the big, clean, relaxing pool and the grounds.

Cliff house has an amazing view and a wonderful salt water pool. The room was good and spacious but the shower temperature would rapidly fluctuate between hot and cold. Parking can also be a bit of a problem especially when the attached restaurant is doing dinner service.

Hot water suddenly became cold many times during showers, parking during restaurant hours was abysmal, and the continental breakfast left a lot to be desired (an inn with its own restaurant should offer more). But being able to leave windows open throughout my entire stay, and falling asleep to the surf every night, made up for these deficiencies. Overall I would recommend staying here, as long as you're okay without certain creature comforts.

Hotel was nice, but dated. The place does not have an elevator and my wife is somewhat handicapped and cannot climb stairs. We had to change rooms when we checked in due to not having an elevator she was not able to go downstairs to the pool, the restaurant or even the grounds below.

The view is incredible! The place has amazing potential, but we had a clogged shower, shower head was barely spraying, heater was loud and banging throughout the night, the pillows and sheets smelled like mildew. We chose it based on having complimentary breakfast, but breakfast was only breads, the coffee only had half and half creamer in a carton that everyone used. We also chose with option of having on-site restaurant, but restaurant was closed first night due to repairs (would have been nice to know that). No coffee in room. The staff was very friendly and courteous. The clock on the nightstand was rusty. That seems insignificant, but it shows how just changing some small things and updating the place would change public opinion. There’s a full restaurant, why not have a “normal” breakfast buffet like most motels that offer complimentary breakfast? It’s a shame that management/corp is letting this place fall apart.

We loved the grounds and warm pool. The room was spacious. Noise from the highway was loud. Mold in the bathroom. Breakfast needed protein.

Excellent hotel!! Room was very clean and views are spectacular. Parking can be challenging due to limited spaces. Bathroom door was hard to close and didn’t lock. I would stay again in a heartbeat!!

Gorgeous location but pretty ramshackle accommodations. We had ground floor room. People above us were incredibly loud until 1am. Building is mid-century, and appears to have had no renovations ever. Also, someone was blaring music outside our room at 8am and smoking cigarettes so we couldn’t enjoy the sound of the waves. Walked into restaurant to book reservation and before we could open our mouths, elderly waitress/manager (?) yelled from back room, “No walk-ins!” Guess she didn’t think we looked like guests. Breakfast buffet was dismal!!! Jar of peanut butter and wilted fruit with grocery store pastries and overcooked hard boiled eggs. Rotting vases of stinky flower water with dead roses on table. Spiders in our room. Torn, pilling bedsheets. Very uncomfortable bed. No air conditioning. But, again, location is beautiful and the pool looked awesome. Still, kinda creepy vibe.

The property location was the best part of our trip. It's right on the beach and we were able to hear the waves from our room. However, the room was severely outdated and run down. There was a huge dip in the bathroom floor and it smelled. It seemed like the floor was rotted or caving in. The shower was absolutely tiny and dirty. We saw some cracks in the walls and damage on the furniture. Also there are no elevators and the Inn is 3 levels. It would be very challenging for people who have special needs. The stairs are the only option. I understand that the property is exposed to the elements but it needs some serious updating. It was quiet and peaceful but we wouldn't go back. The staff was friendly and accommodating but it was disappointing because the photos didn't show the real conditions. It could've been our room only but I doubt it. It would be ok for weekend but I can't imagine staying there longer than that.

Property was dirty and very out dated

There were used contact lenses on the the bathroom floor and large wine stains on two walls, indicating the rooms had not been cleaned between occupants. I took pictures and showed them to the front desk clerk. He didn’t seem surprised or perturbed by this and his apology was tepid and insincere. The outer door code is on a sign at the front door making this a security issue. The rooms and the hotel itself is not well taken care of, and definitely not like the pictures on Expedia. Will not be staying here again.

It is a nice place, they provide complementary breakfast with a great service in front of ocean. For breakfast, you get to choose from menu. In the room, there is only a mini fridge, no coffee maker or microwave. However, there is a microwave in restaurant area which you can use. The view is fantastic and make it a memorable stay.

This place is a gem with a few small issues. It's an older property- which is fine. Staff was all wonderful, restaurant is great. Only complaints. 1.pillows smelled a bit like a guy who had been in the sun all day. I just used a towel to cover it. Probably would have been remedied if I'd ask so NBD. 2. WIFI was abysmal. As someone who needs it to work was a bit of a problem. Other than that, had a relaxing couple of nights.

Nice pool, no coffeemaker, so bring your own. Breakfast is basic; the Shoals restaurant is nice for dinner & their wines are fairly priced. Use a navigational aid - the freeway offramps are funky, the offramp by the hotel is only available to southbound traffic.

Our favorite getaway! Hot water in shower an issue AGAIN, (every stay), but overall a beautiful stay. Shoals restaurant was a disappointment. Service was slow and just average. Understaffed. Paper menus, really? Food was good, not excellent. Besides all that, overall a beautiful property. Needs some work, but we will return.

The advertisement on Expedia about the room description didn’t match with real room. King ocean view shown on the pictures was indeed the deluxe room. The one we got as king ocean view was a tiny room and if you leave the blinds open to see the ocean everyone passing by your room will see the inside as that’s the pathway to all rooms.

Even though the view out the front is fabulous, it doesn't compare to the noise that bombards you from highway 101 thirty yards from the back of the hotel. With four adults and two rooms, some have to tolerate the road noise and lights making it hard to sleep. The building is also, literally leaning toward the ocean and is extremely out dated.

Our room, while simple and dated, was very clean and comfortable. The location along the water is stunning and unique. Dinner was delicious and our wait staff friendly and professional. We could not say the same for the hotel staff. No one answered our several phone calls that day at the front desk. Check-in service...well, it was bad. It was the weirdest, worst check-in experience I have ever had, hands-down. When we arrived at the desk to check in, there was an adult woman sprawled on the floor under the counter with a large purse, two phones she was charging from a wall outlet, notebooks. etc. She was so completely and aggressively occupying the narrow space beneath and in front of the counter that I had to lean out in space over her to give my ID and card to the woman checking me in. I muttered a polite "pardon me" as I tried to brace myself and sign papers and also not touch her, but other than that neither the hotel employee (who was definitely aware of the situation) nor the woman on the floor offered an apology or acknowledged the situation at all. It took a long time to complete the process, with the employee retreating into an office several times while we stood over and too close to the woman on the floor for an embarrassing length of time. It had a feeling of unreality, like a scene from a developing country rather than a hotel on a prime piece of California coastline. Rude and so so strange, but it didn't ruin an otherwise lovely stay. Your mileage may vary...

The customer service and awareness of the staff at the front desk was amazing. Rather than assume the gentleman that walked in behind me was with me, she was very cautious and did not say my room number out loud. I noticed and was very grateful. She also made a dinner reservation for me so I could grab dinner before they closed! Additionally the restaurant staff was so pleasant, the food was amazing and views at sunset hard to beat! I'll be back!.

I Can't express how wonderful the staff are!!! Jonathan help my wife with some stuff to bring up from the restaurant because i am handicapped... the hotel and the rooms are very clean!!! This was our first time here and plan on coming many more times!! We are from Hawaii and this place was beautiful!! The weather worked out perfectly... Mahalo for everything

Parking is easy if you arrive before nightfall. Check in was a little disappointing. I no hospitality from the attendant.

small hotel, we come often and stay here because we have family in ventura. popular restaurant ( great food) that many locals come to eat lunch and dinner which is located by the hotel pool which we had to get used to… Views are fabulous, rooms very clean nothing fancy, beds comfortable , since small hotel and not many rooms therefore front desk has limited hours.

Fantastic view; nice but very small room a bit outdated. Outstanding restaurant was not open because it was Monday. Front desk person was unfriendly and downright rude. She would not accept drivers license or passport on phone since I forgot actual I.d. And I had stayed at hotel only a week before

Ocean out the front door but freeway out the back. Not much value here.

This property advertises a private beach and direct beach access. Their private beach is only present at low tide, During the rest of the time it's completely submerged by the ocean. There is no direct access from the property, we were directed to a dirt path after the parking lot on public grounds, that led to jagged rocks that had to be scaled, in order to reach the sand that was only present at low tide. The rooms were dingy, sticky and in disrepair. The breakfast food was unpleasant. The restaurant staff was rude and unfocused. The restaurant hours have it closed most of the time. This property is listed disingenuously and is not a place you should spend your vacation.

The view was amazing. I slept with the window open and fell asleep and woke up to the sound of the ocean. A little tricky to get on and off the fwy… but worth it. So quaint and relaxing. Like a mini Hawaii vacation

Beautiful serene view of the ocean right outside our doorstep. Great food @ the attached restaurant, a short walk to a private beach, generous accommodations & room w/ double bedrooms are always a plus.

nicely situated between Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Ojai, and its location on the ocean edge is quite special. Great site for beachcombing too. Make sure you know your freeway entrances and exits because not the same depending on which way you travel to the site.

Great location, beautiful view and good food. The staff was very kind, especially the server with tattoos, he made us feel right at home. The restaurant was great and had many options. Overall, a great place. My only real complain is more of a warning to those staying here, it's located right next to the highway and the noise isn't an issue, it's the fact that you have to drive at least 15 minutes to get anywhere else like a store or a gas station. If you want to go back straight to the hotel after leaving, it's more like 25 minutes, so don't forget to grab everything you can!

Food at the restaurant is great. Room looked over the surf and impressive pool. I’ve eaten at the restaurant before and came back to stay in the hotel.

Super cute-kitschy retro get-away. In this frame- visit was fantastic! Can’t get closer to amazing ocean views and retro Cali-cool. Updated clean rooms, but not luxe. No AC- listen to surf. Restaurant was really really good- best scallops! Don’t miss. Authentic cool

If you love vintage coastal California come here! Every room has an ocean view. The gardens and pool are spectacular. The hotel restaurant is wonderful. We had dinner there all three nights we stayed. Beautifully done vintage hotel

The continental breakfast is a bit boring. Mostly baked goods you buy in packages. The restaurant downstairs is very decent but it's pricey. The bed was decent, though it had a sort of skirt on it that was really stained and gross. They should toss those. The room was ok. A bit dated. Damage here and there but it was clean. We would probably stay here again as the ocean is right there and theyre decent enough but understand this isnt a luxurious stay in the slightest. Very average.

We have stayed at the Cliff House several times over the years, and this last visit was great, as always. You can't beat the view overlooking the ocean (every room has a view). Dinner at the Shoals restaurant on the premises was very good, (although a bit pricey, but worth every penny). The Cliff House isn't fancy, but it's clean, quiet, affordable, and the location is amazing. We will be back!

Everything good except the breakfast was all carbs. A tiny amount of fruit in one tray was left out and all gone by the time we arrived at 7:40am without refilling.
