It is an historic building that is well maintained and updated. Rooms are small but it is NYC and an older building which is status quo. It takes forever to get a car from the valet. The valet ticket says to allow 40 minutes. We didn't notice that at first and was late getting to our venue.

The HGU was really disappointing. Very few basic expectations for a hotel were met, and the amenities for which I specifically booked were not available. The restaurant had just closed (permanently under new management) and the terrace was not open for the duration of our stay, despite it being gorgeous weather all three days. It seems it is only open seasonally, with that description being very subjective. None of the rooms have luggage racks, and despite asking several times I never received one. They also did not offer wine glasses when asked. Lastly, the air conditioner in our room was extremely loud to where we couldn't leave it on overnight, then had the issue of not being able to open windows for cooler air.

Great location. Decent sized rooms and bathrooms, clean and modern furnishings, with all the necessary amenities including a fridge. Thankful for the umbrella in the closet because it started raining and I didn’t bring one myself. Staff were pleasant and friendly. Minor issues: low shower pressure, and inconvenient valet as it is not on site, so I had to wait 30mins in my car double parked on a narrow street while I waited for someone to arrive from the parking garage. Tip: if utilizing valet, call the hotel 30-40mins ahead of arrival so they can arrange for a garage attendant to be present at the hotel.

This hotel was in a great location and had a wonderful rooftop. Our room was also cleaned every day of our stay, which is greatly appreciated and not always the case at hotels in New York. We had a wonderful stay here and would definitely stay again!

Overall, my stay was very nice. The staff was pleasant and the small coffee shop was nice; although, it was a limited menu and took a long time to be served. I had the feeling nothing was made there; it was mostly brought in and maybe assembled there. Two things about the property that were frustrating were that the restaurant/bar is closed down, and my room (King Deluxe) didn’t match the online photos. There was only one small room window that opened onto a small, enclosed area that let in no direct light. If I leaned all the way into the window and looked way up, I could see a small piece of sky. That didn’t match the photos for that room by any means. My room was also smaller than the photos suggested. I feel both the room’s view and lack of a restaurant/bar were relatively large misrepresentations online. However, I would stay there again but make sure I had a better room.

This hotel is fine, but nothing outstanding or memorable. Our room had a tiny window the looked out on an airshaft filled with scaffolding (workers mobilized around 9 am, so at least it didn't wake us up). Room was clean, but small. The 1st floor bar on site was never open -- we were there Wednesday through Sunday. No coffee maker in the room and you have to pay for coffee in a large thermos in the lobby. The first floor does have a nice living room area off to the side with some nice art on the walls. They have a roof deck that was inviting, but was closed for a private event the one evening we wanted to try it out.

Loved the HGU Hotel. The rooms are a bit small, but you expect this in NYC! Loved the rooftop terrace/bar. Handy having a cafe in the lobby. Location is great. We would return.

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! Had mold all over the walls when you walk in room and cabinets and a bad leak right above the room entrance. Refused to do anything about it declined me a room change until 2 hours of of trying to deal with it and lied about entire experience. Most useless hotel stay at hotel hendricks it is MUCH nicer and cleaner and better staff. Worst staff here all had a horrible attitude.

We loved the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful and room was clean. Our room faced the street and there was a lot of construction type noise every night between 3 and 5 am. So I would ask for a room that does not face the street if you are a light sleeper.

Good service, nice members of staff, clean hotel. There is a humming around the whole hotel especially on the rooms facing a little courtyard. I contacted the hotel several times in advance asking for a very quiet room with no humming noises to no avail, I was given a room facing a courtyard from where it came a very annoying noise from the ventilation system, I guess. No change was possible, so, I had 4 restless nights. I had a couple of important online meetings on Monday morning and I noticed during the weekend that the wifi was patchy at the best, and on Monday it was simply out of order. I had the whole impression this is the rule in this hotel, so if you need a good internet connection for any reasons, you will not have it in this hotel. Rooms are very small, I had a 'deluxe' one with no coffee machine, no bathrobe, no complimentary water; I wonder how it would be a 'standard' room. All the rest ok. Excellent location.

The room was quite small, but it’s Manhattan so it’s to be expected. Make sure to ask for a city view unless you want to stare at a brick wall. Location is great, and the staff is very friendly/helpful. Overall I had a good experience and would recommend.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It's a small property with not too many guests, which makes it feel very peaceful. Many of the rooms have windows facing the inside of the building, so it's wonderfully quiet. The staff were extremely kind and even allowed us to check in earlier than scheduled since our room was already ready. There's also a café in the lobby that opens very early, which was perfect for starting the day. The location is perfect - close to everything, yet still quiet and relaxing.

Had a great experience with no big complaints. If you are a light sleeper, I recommend bringing ear plugs. There are noises all night from traffic and random New York happenings. On our final day checking out, there was some construction occurring on the street out front as well. Otherwise, staff was wonderful and the facilities were great.

We checked in on Thursday 5/11/2023 which was very good part of our package was free WiFi in the room we were given the password for the WiFi and for our whole stay we could not get the WiFi and we did let the front desk know a couple of days during our stay and when we checked out and all they could do is sat they are sorry. Also there was no mention that the hotel was having construction done so when we opened the window blinds we would see building scalping. Also they moved the restaurant to a smaller area ,which was not the most comfortable place to eat and sit very small tables.This was our fourth time we stayed .The last three times we had a very nice stay, this stay was very disappointing.

!!!Red flags!!!! Stayed in this hotel from 1Jun to 3Jun. And they hold on 100usd deposit while checking in. However, the deposit is still not released (today is 18June). Tried to contact Expedia a few times, and they said the hotel confirmed the deposit has been released. But obviously not, as I can check with my bank. I tried to contact my bank for a dispute, and they request the proof of the confirmation of releasing my deposit. So I emailed the hotel a few times, even with expedia app online chat. !!! However, the hotel never reply and disappeared! I'm not in the US and cannot call them directly. Thus, Expedia tried to call them twice. The first time they said its been released. The second time is unreachable. Still no proof until today. I've been using Expedia for more than ten years and this is the first time ever I've to chase for deposit and begging for a reply from the hotel. Really disappointed that Expedia works with this type of hotel. Guys!! It's $100!!! Don't trust this hotel and please look for another hotel in new york! Worse hotel experience ever.
!!!Red flags!!!! Stayed in this hotel from 1Jun to 3Jun. And they hold on 100usd deposit while checking in. However, the deposit is still not released (today is 18June). Tried to contact Expedia a few times, and they said the hotel confirmed the deposit has been released. But obviously not, as I can check with my bank. I tried to contact my bank for a dispute, and they request the proof of the confirmation of releasing my deposit. So I emailed the hotel a few times, even with expedia app online chat. !!! However, the hotel never reply and disappeared! I'm not in the US and cannot call them directly. Thus, Expedia tried to call them twice. The first time they said its been released. The second time is unreachable. Still no proof until today. I've been using Expedia for more than ten years and this is the first time ever I've to chase for deposit and begging for a reply from the hotel. Really disappointed that Expedia works with this type of hotel. Guys!! It's $100!!! Don't trust this hotel and please look for another hotel in new york! Worse hotel experience ever.

We had a wonderful stay at the HGU for the NYC Marathon! It's a fantastic location, central to so many things but also very easy to take the subway or hail a cab from the major surrounding streets. The staff here were absolutely lovely! They went above and beyond to help us with holding our bags until check in/after check out, ordering cabs as needed, and immediately resolving a broken fridge and low AC fan. In general they were just incredibly kind and helpful. The rooms are very small (typical for Manhattan) and felt a little stuffy due to that, but nothing uncomfortable. Even the mini-bar prices were super fair for NYC. I would absolutely book them again!

The first night was not great, the smoke detector emitted a high pitched noise every 20 seconds through the night, disturbing our sleep. Unfortunately there were no other rooms for us to be put in for the night and I have tried to get a refund for that night however, my emails are not being answered. The rest of the stay was decent, once the smoke detector battery had been fixed. The staff were friendly however, only the general manager could issue my refund and she is not replying back to me.

I’m a tea person and drink tea day and night, so when I found out there is no tea kettle I panicked, fortunately when I went to front desk the staff promptly said they could provide one and delivered to my room within minutes. The service and the tea kettle made the staying an enjoyable experience.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It's a small property with not too many guests, which makes it feel very peaceful. Many of the rooms have windows facing the inside of the building, so it's wonderfully quiet. The staff were extremely kind and even allowed us to check in earlier than scheduled since our room was already ready. There's also a café in the lobby that opens very early, which was perfect for starting the day. The location is perfect - close to everything, yet still quiet and relaxing.

I chose this hotel from a well travelled family member recommendation. It was without doubt in an excellent location! Entrance to the subway was 100m away and it was a 10 minute walk from Grand Central. Empire State Building was equally a 10 minute walk. The bed was very comfortable and they service you room daily as standard, unlike other local hotels! I was staying for 7 nights and if I had to pick a negative it would be the insistance of a credit/debit card to the tune of $400 on arrival or they would not release the room to me, even though they had been paid through this site a fortnight in advance. I was informed that $200 was for the 'Locally collected mandatory fees/taxes*' on top of the similar amount already paid on purchase. The second $200 on top of the mandatory fees was for the security deposit. Just be sure your card can withstand such a hit on arrival or you may have difficulty. I was informed on leaving that the $200 security deposit would be returned to me via transfer and if it is an international bank account then it could take upwards of 3 weeks. A lovely hotel in a central location.

Room was small but king bed comfortable. Wished I could have signed into Netflix on flat screen TV. Not a lot of room to hang long coats. Was afraid I may break one of the bottles of alcohol that were on top of mini fridge in closet. Would be nice to have coffee in the room too.

A small and very nice hotel, very quiet and it feels coming to an apartment. The bar is nice and the hotel has a small roof bar as well. The beds are very comfortable. The bathroom is a bit older and could be a bit cleaner. The breakfast and the coffee is very good for a reasonable amount. Nice little lobby and great music.

HGU is a lovely hotel in a great location. The staff are super nice and helpful. There isn’t a door attendant so for the valet service you park in front of the building and check-in with the front desk and they take car of your car. There is a cafe and restaurant and a very nice lobby. I didn’t end up eating in the hotel because the area has so many great places to eat but I was glad for the option. I only wish the caffe were open the whole morning because it would have been nice to have coffee while I waited for my car in the morning. This is definitely not a self-service amenity kind of hotel so no coffee pots in the room or mini bar. There was a button on the phone for room service but no menu so I couldn’t tell if this was an active service. I did see people getting restaurant delivery services like grub hub. The beds are super comfortable and there was a window seat which was very cute. Will definitely be a nice place to go back to as a couple. For solo travel, I felt well looked after, comfortable, and safe.

It was clean and quiet and was close to NYU Langone. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very small and dark. There was no view outside the window other than another building. The breakfast was not good; the pancakes were dry and tasteless.

Overall, my stay was very nice. The staff was pleasant and the small coffee shop was nice; although, it was a limited menu and took a long time to be served. I had the feeling nothing was made there; it was mostly brought in and maybe assembled there. Two things about the property that were frustrating were that the restaurant/bar is closed down, and my room (King Deluxe) didn’t match the online photos. There was only one small room window that opened onto a small, enclosed area that let in no direct light. If I leaned all the way into the window and looked way up, I could see a small piece of sky. That didn’t match the photos for that room by any means. My room was also smaller than the photos suggested. I feel both the room’s view and lack of a restaurant/bar were relatively large misrepresentations online. However, I would stay there again but make sure I had a better room.

Our room had a tiny window the looked out on an airshaft filled with scaffolding (workers mobilized around 9 am, so at least it didn't wake us up). Room was clean, but small. The 1st floor bar on site was never open -- we were there Wednesday through Sunday. No coffee maker in the room and you have to pay for coffee in a large thermos in the lobby. The first floor does have a nice living room area off to the side with some nice art on the walls. They have a roof deck that was inviting, but was closed for a private event the one evening we wanted to try it out.

Loved the cafe! Amazing Lattes with almond milk and fabulous pastries. Also loved hanging out in the lounge filled with leather couches & chairs. Great place to read & write. Rooms had comfy beds and great showers/bathtub. Would definitely stay here again.

Fantastic hotel for a business trip. The hotel has been updated so it feels modern but with character, it's very clean, and the staff was helpful. Appreciated the sound machine in the room and bottles of water. Small fridge kept drinks cold but not cold enough to store perishables. Bathroom was very clean and bright.
