Best Western Golden Spike Inn & Suites

Quick check in. Room was nice, very roomy for what we needed. Clean, nice shower. Sofabed mattress not very thick or comfy but we made do. Breakfast was good, a lot of selections. Both times we went to pool, no towels. Water in pool very cold. Hot tub okay.

Rooms, pool, breakfast, gift shop, staff- all great. Hot tub jets not working. Grounds not well kept. Many dead trees. Tall grass needed mowing, tall and over grown weeds/thistles outside pool and building.

Rooms and continental breakfast were nice. Pool and hot tub water seemed cloudy and not super clean. Staff very friendly and helpful.

After checking in neither pool was suitable to swim in. The hot tub did not work the ice machines broken. The landscaping was disgusting. Weeds 2 feet tall and garbage all over. The only highlite was our room seems clean enough to sleep in. Very disappointed.

The room was comfortable and the breakfast was good. Pool was freezing.

Good place to stay. Very friendly staff. Pool was green but they drained it to clean right away.

ROOM KEY DID NOT ALLOW US INTO THE BUILDING EVEN AFTER 2 TRIPS TO THE FRONT DESK. PROPERTY IN BACK OF BUILDING BY POOL & PET AREA HAD ALL DEAD & DYING PLANS & TREES. LAWN HAD NOT BEEN CUT FOR 2-3 WEEKS

The staff and surroundings were top notch. Unfortunately, the elevator was out of service for 2 of our 4 night stay.

We like best western so we choose this over other Hill City hotels. The Hot tub was not working and the pool had some kind of film on the water. The pool was in a separate building than we were in so we had to go outside to get to it. It was pretty cool outside so and wet and you are Cold

Our first room had bedbugs. The second room had a super small bathroom. The entire room was extremely small. It didn’t appear clean. The desk chair was broken. The room looked old and like it needed to be remodeled. I was very disappointed. I will never come back. I am rethinking if I even want to book a room at any Best Western ever again. The staff was difficult to understand which made matters even worse. Basically what a waste of my money. I am thankful my husband checked the room for bedbugs after he smelled bug spray in the room.

Great breakfast options. Room was very musty smelling and had hair everywhere.

Hotel room smell like mold sink was clogged carpet needs to be replaced . Breakfast they were out of a lot of stuff. Staff was nice.

Found a dead roach on floor in our room. The carpet needs replaced badly. There were signs in hotel for espresso bar and restaurant but when i asked there were none. It did offer free breakfast in mornings but nothing special. Room was quiet and we could walk to local restaurants for meals. Location was close to Mt Rushmore. Crazy Horse Monument and Custer park

Staff was great, for the area probably one of the better hotels but, it was dirty. Walls, bathroom, floor it’s seen better days.

Convenient location; very Very average room but the king bed was amazing! Great mattress and pillows and sheets! Best part of the hotel was a great nights sleep! Room very dark, bathroom small. It worked for a nights stay.

The air conditioner in the room ran nonstop and made the room smell very musty, and the room was really small with a tiny bathroom vanity. There were stains on the tub mat and floor mat towel. The ice machine was broken in the main building and there seemed to be no urgency to fix it and there was only one in the whole building, so you had to go across the parking lot to another building to get ice if you wanted it. I wouldn’t recommend staying here, unfortunately. It was more expensive than a Ramada in Keystone (that’s closer to Mt Rushmore), that looked much nicer. Hill City was a nice play to stay, if you’re going to see the monument, but I would probably look at a different option. There are several cute cabin communities that I would look into instead.

We like: bedroom is spacious, sink outside of toilet, free breakfast We don’t like: Bathroom is soooo small and light is not bright.

First and foremost, THE STAFF AT THIS HOTEL ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!! YOU WILL NOT FIND BETTER!!!! Now the reason the hotel itself NOT THE STAFF get a low rating from me. The beds are the absolute worst. I’d rather sleep on a concrete floor! The rooms smell musty from moisture, because of poor ventilation. The staff is the friendliest there is. We come to this hotel for the last few years but this spring we are unfortunately going to stay in Custer simply because the beds are so uncomfortable. Which is sad because the breakfast and the staff are so amazing. They fix the beds and I’ll gladly return here.

Hotel room nice and large, double queen suite. Clean and quiet, the separate living room was nice for our teenager. Breakfast was excellent, good selection!

Very dated hotel. Bedroom/bathroom layout was very odd. Also very noisy, could hear doors slamming and people talking all night. Would not chose this particular hotel again.

It was a really good hotel. Staff is friendly, clean nice property, but the only thing is their the bathroom is very small. That’s the only thing otherwise it’s everything is perfect.

The hotel is always top notch every year we stay. Staff is friendly. Rooms are clean. Breakfast Buffet is decent. The only knock I have is the beds are hard! Otherwise it’s the place we stay every year.

The staff here IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!!! The low review is NOT BECAUSE OF THE STAFF THEY ARE AMAZING! The reason for the low stars is the beds. They are the worst. I’ve slept on a concrete floor that’s more comfortable. It’s so bad that next year we won’t be staying here. And we love this hotel for the breakfast and the staff.

The hotel is good. The rooms are dark, very limited lighting.

Upon going to our room, had a small problem with tub, called front desk, came right over and took care of it. We had a small dog, who has not been on a trip like this. He was even good. Walked him in the designated area. He enjoyed it as well. Breakfast was great. Eating places recommended were very good.

Front desk staff had no customer service skills and struggled to even find our reservation. No greeting, or even a thank you for staying.

The staff was indifferent, no smiling, no welcome to The Golden Spike nothing. I think we were in a newly painted/ remodeled room, but it was just uncomfortable, the beds were HORRIBLE!! The couch was just as HORRIBLE. Breakfast was a waste, the cleaning staff was rude and disrepectful. I do not recommend this property at all

Cheked in really late at night. couldn't get hotel.com to work on my phone. the man at the front desk did it for me on his computer, so i could use my gift card. The staff here is so nice!

This was a great base from which to explore the Black Hills, and a perfect set up for our family to enjoy some downtime. The pool areas are great, and the breakfast was very good.

Since we were staying there for 6 nights we loved the size of our rooms and kitchenette area. The firm beds and black out curtains were perfect. The mini fridge froze all of my foods which resulted in $40+ worth of veggies and groceries getting ruined and thrown away. There was no dial to turn down the fridge and that was very frustrating. We also picked this place because it had great reviews for breakfast- I would not rave about breakfast. It was the same thing every morning. Biscuits and gravy and then either sausage Pattie or sausage links and some sort of egg. Please change it up. Give us a variety- French toast sticks, bacon, pancakes…something. The parking lot was nice and big and the pool area was very nice and clean and warm water.

There front desk staff was friendly and efficient. The breakfast options were great, however the staff did not keep the food filled. I heard at least 3 people ask if they were bringing more out and they were ignored, and we literally waited well over 30 minutes for the gravy to be restocked before finally leaving without getting the gravy. Not restocking the potatoes or sausage. They restocked the biscuits and the milk. All while the employees were standing at the entrance to the kitchen ignoring the requests of the people coming in for breakfast asking them if they were going to restock the food. The gravy literally never got refilled and sat empty during our entire breakfast. We have stayed here before and loved it, especially the breakfast. We tipped the serving staff last time and specifically brought cash to tip them again on this trip. Needless to say we kept our tip money. The staff was not efficient or attentive at all to the requests made by many guests, and they made many trips out to the buffet bar seeing the empty dishes and failed to refill the food. They just stood there watching people and chatting and ignoring the people who asked if they were bringing out more food to replenish the completely empty containers. We had such a great experience on our trip here last year we did not hesitate to book it again. Also, the hot tub was absolutely filthy. A gross film floating on the top and throughout the water is was truly disgusting. The pool was not much better.

They offered a free breakfast. The breakfast was a joke. Cold eggs, donut holes,cold cereal. No waffle maker.

This location has a great free breakfast. I would definitely stay here again if I was ever back in Hill City.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. We stayed 4 nights. Although breakfast area was clean and breakfast was adequate, all four mornings offered sausage as the meat and sugared donut holes as the pastry. A variety would have been nice.

Nice breakfast and dining area. The gravy was really watery and the butter was hard as a rock. The eggs were cold. Not the best food. Room was clean it just seemed small. The sink in front of the door was not a good idea.
