Palace Hotel & Spa Buxton

Hotel is clean. Great location & nice staff. The shared areas of the hotel are lovely, but the condition of the rooms leaves a lot to be desired, as did the food. Extra for parking & use of leisure services. Over priced for the quality of hotel which needs an uplift in the rooms desperately.

Swimming pool was cold and we had to pay for the use of the pool which should be stated on hotel.com web site. We picked this hotel due to it having a pool and parking both which we had to pay extra for

Long waits to see reception. Lift needs modernising. About half the rooms are not on the same levels as served by the lift.

Disappointing stay. Room was average at best, but had a phone signal, no Wi-Fi and no windows. The swimming pool’s timings are really frustrating. Hotel check-in is from 15.00, but swimming pool closes at 18.30 which leaves little time to use the facilities.

Hotwl is in a great location. Some parts a bit tired but clean apart from rubbish in done spa lockers. Breakfast was really nice. Main issue was that 'everything is extra'. Cqr parkng, WiFi, use of pool and spa. In the end though that worked well because we had the pool and gym pretty much to ourselves. Lovely deep tissue massage!

Facilities such as pool/ sauna/ steam room were not included in my room rate. This was not clear at point of booking. The facilities swayed me to choose this hotel, so was very disappointed not to be able to use them.

I don't like being charged parking when you staying at the hotel and and spending money at the bar and meals

There needs to be a major commitment to improving this hotel by the owners . The lift for three days had been broken with no signs of repair . Given the demographics of the visitors it is unreasonable to expect elderly guests to climb three flights of stairs. No telephones in the bedroom. Again referring to elderly visitors help could be needed having no communication is irresponsible. I wanted to order food but my first choice was unavailable as was my second . What I ordered was pretty average and I left half of the meal. The only saving grace was the very pleasant and obliging staff who must be working under difficult circumstances given the lack of commitment by the owners .

Currently being refurbished so lovely and clean in places but paint gloss drips and splashes spoilt it. Choice of food at breakfast good. Really was looking forward to the pool which was part of the reason I booked only to find it was closed for refurbishment when we got there. No prior notice of this. Would have affected booking. Staff helpful and friendly.

Standard room very small window in room opened onto the air conditioning which got very load int the middle off the night waking up with headache. Had to pay for parking even though you was a guest which you would expect to be free also had to pay for pool facilities with all the little extra maybe book a higher rated accommodation but overall enjoyed the weekend in Buxton itself

We were at the rear of the property on the 2nd tier of the ist floor, so after a 6 hour drive from west scotland I had to lug my suitcase up stairs and negotiate several doors to access our room. The room was basic as were the bathroom facilities. The place is in need of a spruce up. The following morning at breakfast my wife went to the ladies. They were generally unclean and there was a pair of soiled underwear on the floor. I know that there'd been a wedding the day before, but these things should have been sorted before the other guests sat down to breakfast. The hotel looks grand and impressive from the outside. The rooms and service need to catch up.

A very grand hotel if a bit dated now. We shouldn't have to pay extra for parking or the 'spa' as hotel guests. (Spa changing rooms were dirty and showers mouldy, a weird smelling tiny sauna and stream room). Understaffed and inefficient breakfast service, maitre de was having to clear tables and multi-task, she could have done with someone managing the youngsters clearing table and telling her when and where tables were available. A 20 mins wait queueing to be seated is simply not acceptable at breakfast.

The pool on the low side had dirty tile, I rubbed it to see if it was discolored but it came off and the floor on the low side was dirty also. floor from pool to include the changing room foor was dirty. The bar service was very friendly but the food. First they had to check if they had the food, then the food: Lunch-salmon sandwich with cream chees and cucumber came without margerine instead of cream cheese. the salad had some brown pieces which I removed, my sons ham and chees sandwich was great. Dinner- my son's pizza was GBP 15 and tasted like a bad frozen pizza, we didn't expect a fresch pizza but at least a decent frozen one. The best part was the crust, the sauce tasted like tomato paste not sauce. my pita with hummus was so hard that I couldn't bite it (I still have my own teeth), they brought it back and the pita was fresh and soft and was good, I am not sure why they covered the hummus with rocket and then put the pita on top. The side/house salad I orderd had some slimy dark leaevs which I didn't eat. So quality of the food was very poor. After that experience we deceided against breakfast at the hotel and went to Noonology which was exceptional. The bet was very hard, and sleep was painful. Good location, Parking is not free it is GBP 5 per 24 hrs. Pool and Bar service was very friendly. Out of the 3 front desk staff I talked to 1 was very friendly but the two blond staff members (no offence anyone) appeared to be bothered when asked question or checking in.

Terrible stay - So over priced and unclean. There was a half eaten scotch egg in my fridge. Decor etc is date. The maid clearly drank one of my bottles of water and left the bottle there as if it was full genuinely a shocking experience.

Friendly staff and clean rooms

Location, next door to the train station, elevated position overlooking the town. Front facing room had distant views to Solomons Temple and surrounds. Convenient for all my needs. Onsite parking available. Excellent base for walkers, hikers, a distinct clientele of older folk and frequented by theatregoers to Buxton Opera House. Rooms are big, full of character as befits a grand victorian building. No noise from traffic or anything, at least not from my second floor front room. Clean, quiet and very comfortable, ideal when based here for several nights. Rooms are warm due to older type heating with exposed hot water pipes between rooms. Can't really be controlled but my large window opened enough for cool air. Ensuite wc perfect, furniture and useful tea making facilities too. No room cleaning unless booked the night before. It's a big building to service but I didn't think this would be an issue, but with my five night stay I should have had the room serviced at least once. Reception staff very helpful in all other respects, very smart, knowledgeable too. Breakfast can be booked with the room booking or, as in my case, I booked each day's breakfast the night before at reception. Breakfast is a proper, all you can eat affair. Couldn't fault it. Stuff yourself or take your pick! And the breakfast staff need special praise for doing such a good job. Yes, we'll worth the extra cost, as really, just not worth going anywhere else around the town, as you'll never get this value.

The staff were excellent. The bed had earwax stains on the blanket, and the ceiling had a large brown smear on it, not like a watermark, much darker and deliberately smeared. The bathroom looked nice, but when you ran the bath, the shower turned on, you could either have a bath with a shower running, or a shower going from hot to cold occasionally. Otherwise, it was a pleasant trip.

Pleasant staff. The hotel has a grandeur about it, but those days of grandeur are long gone. The hotel staff must do a great job, not the expense it must incur to maintain such a grand place. Our room was clean. The lobby was impressive and comfortable. There was no rush to leave the hotel after we checked out, which help our circumstances as our flight was a late flight. We had a room facing the rear, which had a disappointing view. Also our window was a wee bit grimey and probably not had a clean in a long time. Perfect location to explore the Buxton, near the Crescent and Opera house, restaurants and cafes. Aldo, bang next door to the train station on the Manchester line. Altogether, we had a great stay. However, I wouldn’t like to stay during winter or when it’s quiet. With all those long corridors, it would have a bit of the Shinning feel about it, with thoughts of Jack Nicholson wandering the corridors.

Our room was really tired. The bathroom was damp, there was mould on the ceiling. When the room wasn’t cleaned, we asked at reception but we were told there was a piece of paper in the room explaining cleaning only happens if you request it the day before. What a policy! So, we have paid for a service we didn’t receive. Reimbursement for that would be good. Also, all food service stops in Buxton at 2100. It would be good if you could still obtain food in the hotel after that but no, you can’t. But, there was a lady working in the bar who really did go over and above when we asked her to prepare an Irish coffee for us. She did a great job.

Exterior, Lobby, staircase and downstairs looked very spectacular and grand. However, the hotel is very tired and in need of renovation. Windows filthy, no hairdryer in room, bathroom bin looked like it had been kicked down the road and back twice. Tea, coffee etc in room only sufficient for 1 drink and not replenished. No room service or daily cleaning ( we were there for 3 nights) - you shouldn’t have to ask for this!!! No three pin plugs near bed, no fridge or minibar and view was of a scaffolded corner. Very poor for £144 a night! Most staff very young and gave the impression that guests were an inconvenience. Service was poor. Breakfast was the worst I’d ever had in a hotel. Only 1 choice of eggs (fried and generally burst), limited choice of fruit, over diluted cordial for juice and the coffee was undrinkable. Food frequently ran out. Worse than a travel lodge. Was also a queue for a (cramped) table if you breakfasted during the last hour of service when the dining room resembled a rugby scrum. I’d rate this as 2 star rather than 4 star which is such a shame because, given the building and location, it should have been superb.

The room had no windows and was next to a boiler room that never shut up. They only provided one towel and there was no warning that there was a step up into the room. The pool which you had to pay for to use was cold.

Good hotel and our room was clean but bed mattress was dated and could do with a replacement. Overall it was a good stay

We were very impressed with our room which was very clean and looked freshly reburbished. The hotel itself was also clean and fresh with very helpful and friendly staff. A stones throw from restaurants and the theatre so convenient location. Would recommend to others.

Extremely tiny rooms, lots of stairs to be climbed. Dated property, in need of major refurbishing. Was cheaper on the day to book compared to advance booking.

All is fine. And the hotel is good value for money. However if you’re unlucky enough to have a room facing in, you have the noise of fans 24/7.

It's fair to say I've never looked to see if a hotel room I was staying in had windows, but from now on I most definitely will. With a compact double I expected it to be smaller although the size of the room was more than fine, it just didn't have a window, it was a basement room. The other things I thought were included that weren't, were Wifi (free in the lobby), and pool access (£4 pp). Very disappointed with the stay here.

Didnt have any food, the room was very clean and spacious though the bed was the worst I we have ever slept in, two singles pushed together, very hard and lumpy the floor might have been more comfortable there was also a constant drone ( air conditioning?)

Room allocated was in the basement, not the best...the central heating was blasting out, tried to turn the radiator down but it would not work. Informed the manger on reception who came down to look. The valve was broken he came back with a newer one again that did not work. We had the option to roast alive or put up with the radiator making a loud running water sound. He said it would be passed to maintenance for the next day. Well nothing was done at all . No apologies, no offer to move us rooms or anything else. Due to to this very poor service I would not stay here again or recommend it to anyone

Beautiful building, lobby and bar very good, room basic, bath needed replacing, the room was extremely hot and the window would only open a couple of inches it was unbearable in the night, radiator was off but pipes boiling.

A comfortable stay in a very nice hotel. If you have problems walking, ensure you get a room close to the lifts, as we had a considerable walk including stairs to our room. I would prefer parking to be included in the cost of the stay.

Radiators needed bleeding so the room was glacial. Front desk dismissive and unhelpful. Breakfast staff could not do enough to help but too many customers and too few staff.

Really like this hotel, love how grand it is - was bit disappointed that when check in time is 4pm there is a huge queue as only one person was on reception checking people in - you would think they expect the queue and put more people on. Otherwise a lovely 2 night stay

Very friendly local staff. Excellent with people.

Not really a 4* experience. We’d decided to gloss over some of the failings …. even probably the worst view we’ve ever had. However, staff attitude can make a poor or average stay a good stay. One rude member of staff can also let the rest of the team down. The hotel obviously has a problem with the room card entry system …. and no, the card wasn’t kept anywhere near my phone!!

The reception staff were very good, aparrt from long queues to book in. Our room was changed, originally an executive twin room, to a far from executive double. Twin beds pushed together, 2015 sprung mattresses with mattress covers, springs kept creaking, ping and in all very uncomfortable. Breakfast was good, however the female in charge was very rude and abrupt with everyone. There were youngsters clearing tables and she was constantly hounding them, you could see they were very nervous. Seemed shortage of staff, only one serving in bar and he regularly went missing for no apparent reason, long queue, so gave up waiting in the end. Whoever is in charge of this hotel. Needs to liven up and make sure everything is ship shape, new mattresses definitely required

After check in we went for drinks to come back late and not be able to access our room and be told it was a different room we were in.. after talking with a different lady in reception turned out someone else has been given our room and all our belongings brought down to reception by said guests who had also stolen some of our belongings … we were then bizarrely given the room back but on re-entry ironing board was up towels used .. it was too late at night to go and complain again as we were tired and had an early check out

We have stayed here on several occasions...so convenient for the Opera House and lots of options for eating either at the hotel or in Buxton.

Great location. Very reasonably priced.

The hotel is extremely convenient to the town and in a beautiful dominant position. Parking is easy and reasonably priced and the staff were polite and helpful. Through circumstances we didn't eat there so cannot comment in regard to food. Only adverse comments are the size of the room - we had to sidle past the bed and the untidy area visible through the window to the rear of the property. Value for money.

Ideally located just next to the train station and the city centre. I have stayed here twice already and would pick this hotel again. The bedroom was clean and comfortable, although I’d have liked more than just the one towel and for it to have been changed.

Hotel looks stunning from afar, but everything is decidedly average at best. Everything is very basic, food is boring with limited choices at both breakfast and in the evening. Rooms are clean with basic amenities. Probably wouldn’t stay again as nicer places in the area including Premier Inn

Lobby staff were excellent. Breakfast average. Poor coffee. Old fashioned bread choices and only jam as spread choice. Disappointing to see Harrogate spring water in a Buxton hotel. Would be good to see really good quality, local food and exciting breakfast choices.

We enjoyed our stay here for the third time. The room was spacious and comfortable and the breakfast was very good, lots of choice. The entrance lobby is striking with a beautiful staircase. There has obviously been an effort to restore the hotel from faded glory into somewhere you would want to stay. The pianist in the lobby on the Saturday evening was a nice touch. There is a £5 charge for 24 hours of parking which is very reasonable as finding a space in Buxton when its busy can be difficult. We will be returning soon.

Large room with excellent views over Buxton. Car parking great value at £5 for 24 hours. The room needed updating and refreshing. Difficult to fill the kettle, due to the tap position. The kettle had water in, from the previous guests. We paid extra for breakfast, which wasn't worth it. No fresh fruit only tinned in sugary syrup. No vegetarian choices, ended up with beans on toast, which was luke warm. Would stay again, as we have family in Buxton, but wouldn't pay extra for breakfast, not worth it.

Twin room - tired decorative (smell we couldn’t put our finger on?), towels thin and hand towel extremely stained and pillows very hard. Morning breakfast - meats were over cooked Don’t Drink Any Machine Coffee at Breakfast YUK!!! Hotel Facade and public areas lovely. But the rest needs improvement. Unfortunately we won’t be returning!

The hotel was really impressive. Rooms were beautifully, appointed baths and shower included. Breakfast cooked well and regularly refreshed. Dinner wàs disappointing. Food did not live up to the rest of the hotel. Draw back was that you had to pay extra for wifi, extra for parking and extra for the gym and pool.

Liked. Firm mattresses. Grandeur of the hotel. Disliked. Pillows rather hard. Breakfast very busy. Some foods were not refilled. Conservatory had lots of space but was very cold so we cleared our own table in the dining room. would have benefited from a little more staff focus.
