Old Hall Hotel

We love this hotel. Old & quirky. In town & close to everything in Buxton. Very comfortable, & clean. Plently of got water, soft towels & good toiletries. Amazingly dog friendly. You can take breakfast in a separate room so your dog can join you.

Staff were very helpful. I was travelling alone with a baby and the front desk staff helped with my bags. Room was nice and clean. Only 2 downsides the pillows were as thin as paper and lumpy in my room and the lift is tiny. As I had a pram only the pram and myself could squeeze in and it was a squeeze. If you’re travelling with children I’d recommend leaving the pram in the car.

+ Nice full English breakfast buffet + Free/cheap parking + Located in the city center - Wifi was broken, but could connect to their sister hotel's wifi - Downgraded to a single room on the 1st night, as 1 of the rooms wasn't useable due to rain. Was moved back to a double on the 2nd night

Although it is a historic building the rooms and public areas are up to date and excellent. The staff are amazing. Helpful, friendly, and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed there to avoid driving home after a show at the Arts Centre. I would certainly stay there again when a show is on. A tip- parking is available opposite the hotel, but limited in supply. Do not leave it until the check in time to look for a parking space.

Work has started to update property, new decorating. Lovely breakfast, rooms comfy. Only downside bar closes at 9pm, not very good when shows finish 10 pm.

Great location and cheap parking just outside.Hotel room was clean with nice towels and toiletries.Hotel is a bit dated in parts but the breakfast was lovely and you get a warm welcome on reception.More teabags would be good we only had two in room the bottle of water was a nice touch. We would stay again.

Great location right in the center of town. Breakfast was full English buffet, great quality. Nice bright breakfast room. Room was large and in keeping with the age of the hotel. Would definitely stay there again. Only negative is the parking. Expedia shows the hotel has parking, but it's actually just metered parking on the street that you get a discount on, so if all the spaces are already filled with people in town you're out of luck. That should be clearer on Expedia.

Hotel close to the centre of the town and only a minute walk from the opera house and gardens. Looks like some refurbishment in progress. Tidy rooms but some of the chairs a touch fragile. Rooms clean. Parts of the hotel look like they could do with a bit of redecorating. Lift in the hotel but small and temperamental with sliding door on inside which if not closed stops the lift working (left open by a guest on a top floor so needed to be closed to resume working) Good breakfast. Parking outside the hotel but was busy. A ticket from the hotel covered 24hrs from issue. Otherwise it's pay and display which could be expensive as time limited during the day.

Dated old hotel way past it’s prime- lift was a debarcle, an inside safety door had to be fully shut as you left the lift, otherwise it didn’t operate and no one was able to use it. I saw elderly people struggle with the stairs as the lift was never operating. Spacious room, and breakfast was great. Location fantastic.

Overall the hotel was fine. It’s quirky with its wonky floors and ceilings, it’s very old so expect this. Staff were friendly, room was lovely and spacious with a fantastic view. Had a proper single bed for our teenage son which was excellent rather than most other hotels only offering a sofa bed. Had a bath as well which is wonderful. Breakfast was help yourself which was fine. Parking is limited but we were lucky to get a space right outside. It’s first come first served. £6 for 24 hours pay int the hotel, so not too bad if you manage to get a space. No room service available I did ask at reception, there’s a little bar in the hotel that sells food up to 9pm I think, but not our cup of tea really. Overall it was fine.

Hotel is in a poor state, room wasn't cleaned very well and furniture needs replacing. Poor breakfast.

So bad we checked out after 15 minutes. The room was filthy, when I went to reception to complain they said it was because we were in a dog friendly room. I’m guessing that the previous occupants dog ate biryani as it was all over the floor! The entrance to the hotel was very dilapidated, as were the corridors and our room. Wallpaper was hanging off the walls and water stains everywhere. The images they show online are nothing like any of the areas we saw and the dust in the room was thick, clearly not having been dusted for months. The bedding was dirty, cracks in the walls and ceiling and the telephone was filthy. The tea/coffee tray was heavily stained with various hairs all over. The bed rest was covered in a thick layer of dust and all the areas of carpet by the skirting boards were thick with dust. The chairs in the room were stained and thick with dust. It looked like the room hadn’t been cleaned properly for many months. The bathroom was clean but very dilapidated. The furniture in the room was very old, heavy and dated. The room we had looked nothing like the photos on the website. We complained to the manager who was helpful and asked housekeeping to go and clean the room. When the housekeeping staff came to reception I heard them say to the manager that the room was ‘a sh*t tip’. We had traveled from Southampton and the last thing we wanted to do was find another hotel, but to be honest we’d rather have slept in the car! We did get a refund thankfully.

The hotel and room looked like it needed a good clean and vacumm everywhere. Dusty glasses in our room and the room very shabby. The hotel was also far too hot. Comfy bed though and good breakfast x

The location is excellent. The staff were very friendly but the rooms were not the cleanest and i don't think they've been dusted since Mary Queen if Scots checked out. We did see a team of 3 cleaners in The rooms before check out so why they don't seem to clean windows or mirrors or dust anything is strange. Also out bathroom was covered in dead brown leaves.... in summer? Strange as we haven't even got to autumn. Apart from this, the hotel is abit dated but think that's part of the charm, we just thought for £150 a night they could pay abit more attention to detail with cleaning. Breakfast was very good but coffee was poor.

Very poor facilities, not worth the money. The bathroom ceiling was even leaking. I told the reception, and she just replied would get someone to take a look. No one come. If you have other choice, don't choose this one.

Entrance carpets disgraceful

The biggest downfall was the cleanliness and the overall impression was tatty. In the room there was dust everywhere. The shelf on the bedside cabinet was thick with dust. Dust on the TV edges. The edges along the mirror stand were thick with dust. The net curtains were dirty and ripped. There was no toilet brush, no plastic beakers in the bathroom and the toilet bowl was stained. On the second day all the breakfast food was cold, we dined at 9AM. Two juice jugs were empty, there weren't any bottles of water and hardly any glasses. There was no beer in the bar, just lager. Guinness wasn't on draft, even though there was a hand pull, it was served in tins.

This hotel should not be classed as 3 star more like 1 star.Our room overlooked the next door Spa terrace which was full people in bathrobes. The net curtains in our room were soiled with bird droppings and the furniture was broken. Dressing table mirror pointing to floor and non adjustable, wardrobe had no handles or key and only 5 hangers for clothes.The carpet was also stained and only 1 bedside table supplied for a kingsize bed. Dinner was pre-booked on the first night but restaurant unaware and after ordering @7.30 we finished meal @ 9.30 We were the only diners. It transpired their were only 3 members of staff on site.The decor of the whole building is in a very poor state considering it is owned by the Ensana Group. Fortunately the bed and bathroom were clean. Also their is no room service and all meals including breakfast have to be pre-booked. The staff did their best but lacked support and training. Our stay was memorable but for the wrong reasons.Your comments would be appreciated.

Really poor stay. Second-level room was more like a basement and had as near to no fresh air possible. Bathroom had stains on the walls, cobwebs in corners, and dust caked on the towel rack. Included breakfast was buffet-style and nothing to write about. Service was overall sub-par, bordering on negligent. Buxton itself is lovely but we’ll steer clear of the Old Hall next time we’re here.

Comfy four poster and nice bedding, the building itself is obviously old and a bit tired in terms of decor, bit of a renovation needed. Staff were very professional and attentive. Breakfast was excellent, good quality produce.

It's a lovely old hotel, convenient for the park, theatre and shopping. Our bedroom was a large double, with a bath, separate shower and two armchairs (very comfortable). They also accept dogs (we wouldn't have gone there if they didn't).

Rooms very dated and old. Uncomfortable beds, noises and floor creaking with bathroom from the 1989’s. No shamooo or shower gel, cold shower. Not worth £166 stay

Overall a good stay and we would return. Location, in the centre of the town. Next to a beautiful park and leisure facilities. All attractions and shops within walking distance. Parking £6 for 24 hours for hotel visitors, not many spaces because they are public ones but we were lucky and dropped on one. Receptionist was exceptionally kind, attentive and helpful. Room, spacious, clean and warm. Beautifully decorated and this gives it a comfortable opulent feeling to match the grand old historcal building. Evening restaurant experience was disappointing, expensive for food that was nothing special. Incomplete cheese board, no grapes, however no prior warning which would have influenced our choice. Breakfast was a buffet, typical choices and fresh, however room to hughly improve using locally sourced organic food which would ooze flavour and make it a breakfast to remember.

The room was very clean but the room slanted too much so didnt sleep.

Mattress was very old & in a poor condition, it needed replacing. The support had collapsed & it was like trying to sleep in a trench! Totally unacceptable for any grade hotel never mind a 3 star. There was no replacement mattress or any other room available. All that was done was to turn the mattress which was a marginal improvement.

WiFi is a bit patchy, room also very warm due to heating being on when it was a warm Sunny day. Bed also a bit hard

The two bedroom family room was great. It had 2 comfortable beds. The ceilings were low if you are over 6 feet tall, but would book again.

Hotel was clean but looked a little tired in some areas. Overall a good stay however the rooms seem to be overly warm for the time of year making sleeping more uncomfortable

The hotel has an old world charm, which I found attractive. The breakfast was good, though monotonous (I lived there for ten days, the menu was exactly the same all ten days). Overall a good hotel. The one complaint I have is about the staff. I had to leave for Manchester airport on 10th Aug. On 8th Aug, I told the receptionist that I have to be at the airport by 5.00a.m. and would she arrange a taxi for me for 4.00a.m. She said no problem. Then on the night of 9th, I asked her, has a taxi been arranged? Again the response was, no problem everything taken care of. I told her to give me a wake up call for 3.30a.m. Imagine my shock when I came down at 4.00a.m. on 10th Aug, when the night porter told me that they had been unable to arrange a taxi. He suggested that I take the bus, which left at 4.30 a.m. Fortunately the bus reached the airport on time, so I did not miss my flight. Now, I can understand that Buxton is a small place, and it may be difficult to get a taxi at 4.00 a.m. But then why didn't she tell me that when I asked her to arrange a taxi? I could have stayed nearer the airport on the night of the 9th. As it happened, I was lucky there was bus that early in the day and I did not miss my flight. Also, she told the night porter wrong room number for the wake up call. Instead of no.1 (my room no.), she told him no.2. So while I did not get my wake up call, some poor sap was disturbed in his sleep at 3.30 a.m. by the night porter. Staff should be trained better.

However, we tried to eat at the restaurant, and that's where it all fell down. We were going to a show at the Opera House at 7pm. Arrived at the restaurant at 5.15pm, planning on having just a main, assuming that 1h45m was plenty of time for this. Took a while for our order to be taken, but we still had a good 1h20m to spare. Obviously that time goes by, a few other tables (who ordered after us) got their food, albeit late. Once it gets to 6.55pm we decide it's time to sack it off and head to the Opera House. Thankfully we weren't charged for the meal, and got a vague apology and some excuse making. The excuse being that they really didn't expect it to be so busy, and only had one chef on. Admittedly we did not book, but having spoken to others in the restaurant we were definitely in the minority. There were maybe 20 people in there in total, at least 14 of whom seem to have booked a table. Plus it's a restaurant opposite the Opera House. If you can't foresee it being busy before a show, what on earth are you doing running this hotel?! There were several opportunities to tell us the situation and give us the option of eating elsewhere, but that was never taken. So this ruined the whole plan of the evening, leaving us with a rather tainted night away.

The staff were excellent especially Alistair who is very hospitable and informative of the history of the hotel and it's surroundings. All the staff were polite and accommodating and the breakfast was amazing

The Old Hall Hotel is a very old historic building located in a very central location in Buxton. The staff were welcoming and genuinely seemed to care about whether you had a good experience. We enjoyed a great meal in the restaurant and were comfortable in our room, which was basic but very clean and sufficient for our needs.

Service was poor . Waited 35 mins for a glass of water after asking 3 times. Given 2 towels so asked for another 2 , nothing so asked the following morning again .still nothing . Checked out on the 3rd morning !! Curtain needed clips in our room asit was hanging off the rail and would not close properly . Again asked on 2 separate days . Not done . Dirty and stained settees in the lounges .

This is a lovely old hotel with lots of history attached to it. The location is amazing. Very close to the beautiful Pavilion Gardens, the Crescent, and lots of bars and restaurants. A great place to visit for a short break!

Old world hotel, but with all the normal mod cons, right in the centre of this lovely Peak District Town.

Classic Old British property located centrally in Buxton opposite the Gardens and next to the Opera House. Overall a good experience and worth a short stay

Never been to Buxton and was to attend a wedding at the Devonshire Dome. Chose the hotel for proximity and definitely did not disappoint. We were close to the centre and within walking distance to the major attractions and local pubs and cafes . Just across is a beautiful park and Pavilion. Just happens to be a local super hero event too , so lovely stay and nice first visit

Very good value for money. Hotel and B&B prices are on the pricier side in this area and this hotel is very fairly priced, we had a lovely twin room and bathroom and freshly cooked breakfast. Parking was just £6.50 for 24 hours. Location is excellent, just across the road from Buxton Opera House. Would stay again!

Stayed as going to a show at Opera House. Could not be nearer. Great choice of restaurants within easy walking distance.

Very much enjoyed our two night stay at the Old Hall. We had the spacious suite on the top floor which was accessed by a narrow, twisting staircase. Not recommended if you have mobility issues. The hotel is well positioned between the pavilion gardens and the crescent. It’s also 200 yds from the Opera house. Good bar and dining facilities. Would definitely recommend.

great location

Good location impressive, however breakfast food was overcooked and dry, on the Friday breakfast buffet bar the plates were cold. Dinner both nights was good and the staff very pleasant. This was a memory lane visit has I had stayed there many nights 47years ago.

We were really happy with our recent 3-night stay. We booked a family room for two people - we prefer to have two beds when jet lagged & our room was a perfect set up for us (could either be a king or two twins, plus a sofa bed). Our room was spacious and bright and we were actually pleasantly surprised at how roomy the bathroom was, which had a small tub good enough for a soak. This is a quaint, old historical building which means you can expect creaky stairs and floorboards; we travel with a noise machine so zero noise issues for us when sleeping. We had no issues taking our luggage in the elevator, although we lucked out when bringing them down - the service guy was just about to start working on it. Excellent location for everything you need in Buxton; we walked around the park and through the downtown most days. Great choices of restaurants around. We were not impressed with the buffet breakfast, it was very expensive for the low quality and minimal selection, so advise to try a local well-reviewed place instead. The bar area and quaint front room for afternoon tea looked more inviting, however. Staff were all fantastic and made our stay all that more enjoyable. We will defo choose Old Hall Hotel again when we next visit this part of UK!

Had a lovely stay. Yes, some of the decor looks tired but it is a very old hotel with lots of character. I booked 3 rooms and we had the smallest bed, but it was very comfortable. We had a drink in the "Whine bar" which is small and busy in the evening and also breakfast, which was one of the nicest, self serve, breakfasts I've ever had. All the staff were attentive and friendly but the lady on reception and the lady on at breakfast, were especially lovely. Just one thing to remember, if you use the lift, please shut the metal gate and door when you get out as it cannot be called/used from another floor, if not.

Good hotel. Friendly efficient staff. Rooms spacious and clean, comfy bed. Furniture a bit tired but old furniture often is, why throw it away and buy new when it’s perfectly usable. Hugh bath!! So much history in this building. Dinner menu was limited and they had run out of a few options too so a little disappointing but food reasonable and hot. Breakfast much better, no complaints there.

Fantastic hotel and really lovely staff. The breakfast was good and because it was cooked in small batches, hot and fresh. Coffee served in a cafetiere and tea in a teapot. We ate in the bar one evening and the food was delicious. The room we stayed in was large with a very comfortable 4 poster bed. Bathroom was large and supplied with shower gel, shampoo and hand wash. Large bath towels were a bonus. Parking outside the hotel is £6 for 24 hours with a ticket from reception. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Disastrous breakfast understaffed food inadequate and very poor tables uncleared, lots of guests complaints. One poor girl did her best but was overall unacceptable. Sausages raw, eggs exhausted in grease, bread and croissants ran out, no fresh fruit. Asked to book a breakfast time online which we did but it bounced back. Avoid.

Faded grandeur but still ticks all the boxes. Epic level claw foot bath - preimium shower. ok bed decent wifi. V nice and helpful staff. Breakfast was superb full english and conti options. Area super charming, great dining options - check out the fish and chips ip the hill!
