First off this is a shared bathroom hotel that is really clean. Our room was small with no TV no sink or ice machine. I rate this as a 5 because it’s location and how much fun my wife and I had while here. Granted we only were in the room at night but the staff was super helpful and if we come back again, just the wife and I, we will be staying here. There are 3 levels and no elevator so if you can’t walk, this is not an option. If it’s more than just the 2 traveling it might make it challenging. Kids would have to be the kind that is just thankful for a vacation to enjoy this place. Chirag and staff were on point and I loved it so much. There are rumors of it being haunted but I did not witness anything, too bad, maybe next time. We loved this place

I've stayed at the San Remo before and understand that it is a little funky, but it's affordable and in a good neighborhood. The problem this time was that they are apparently doing remodeling. I found this out when the power tools and hammering started at 8am. They were tearing out sheetrock a couple of rooms away and carrying out the hallway in front of my room. This is definitely something that they should have been mentioned when I made the reservation. (There was also nothing in the hotel and no mention when I checked in.) I knew I would be out until 1am or so, and decided to not drive back to Sacramento and to stay in SF so I could get a good night's sleep. I would have found another option if I'd known what would be happening so early in the morning.

This is a marvelous little gem in a great location. There is no central heat or AC, so if you arrive on a frigid night, check your wardrobe for a space heater. The hot water is mid-warm at best and it took several minutes to flow from ice cold to bearable every single time I turned on the tap. I’d stay here again, but only in the summer.

Fun experience if you're ready for minimal amenities and shared bathrooms. Be warned all rooms are up a 20 step flight of stairs. Parking($20 per day) is two blocks away. We had a late arrival and the garage was locked, so we had to park on the street. The host was very accommodating and said he would address our concerns. Coffee was great

I stayed in the San Remo Hotel for 3 nights. As a solo female traveler. I found the hotel safe and comfortable. I had a small bathroom in my room and basically just used the room as a place to sleep. This is not a luxury hotel, but for the price and location, I was very pleased. San Remo is located between Fisherman's Warf and North Beach. It's just a short walk from so many good restaurants, tour companies, the cable cars, and even Chinatown. The hotel itself is charming and the staff is friendly. As other reviewers have noted, the rooms are tiny and have very little insulation. So, if your neighbors are having a lound conversation, you will hear it. I would also mention that the hotel is on the 2nd and 3rd floor of a building over a restaurant. It would not be a good place to stay if you can't climb stairs. Bottom line, this hotel fit my needs well. And, for the price, it can't be beat. I would stay there again.

It was a great stay. A place just to sleep, not for the amenities. No air conditioning in the rooms, it was very hot at night. There is a fan on the ceiling, but doesn’t help. It is shared restrooms and showers. Not in the rooms. Very much like a hostel feel.

Interesting history. Bathrooms not very clean. Ventilation lacking in the room. However the clerk said we could request a room with an outside window. Would stay there again. All upstairs and no elevator.

Classic Barbary Coast hotel, with 19th century photos and artifacts, lacy curtains, redwood trim. Bathrooms were communal but clean and well appointed. Rooms small but well furnished in a period style. Very historic vibe but generally clean and well run. Staff were uniformly great.

Clean, quaint, and comfortable. Convenient to what we wanted to do. No frills. Room was small but the hotel has such charm. Somewhat of a boutique upscale hostel. Some rooms share hallway private bathrooms. Ours didn’t.

So this was a 2 night stay...this is not a hotel. It's a hostel. The room was a shoebox. The blind was broken and I found and killed a cockroach in the bathroom. They promised me a refund of 1 night. They lied. I have received nothing. Do NOT waste your money on this place.

Kind of my fault for misunderstanding the shared bathroom situation, but still, the place was not the most comfortable stay. Our room had a light that constantly flickered and no window that had direct access to sunlight. There was a window in the room - that looked into the hallway of the hotel. No ventilation either as the vent did not seem to work and obviously we would not open it. Guess the old saying stands true, you get what you pay for.

Room 30 was admittedly tiny, and there wasn't a lot of surface area to put things down - However, if you're a couple who gets along and can live snug & you like to walk about to many of the area's sights, this is a great spot. The Cilantro Taqueria and Italian restaurant literally steps away. Breakfast is just up the street at Cafe Capriccio - it's really good and usually busy, worth the wait.

Great location and Service. Room was stuffy, we opened window that opened into the hallway and doorway nearly every time we were in the room. Figure out a vent system and we would love to come back. But in July afternoon, stuffy room with 2 people will not be comfortable.

Hotel is old with lots of stairs but it has character/history. Room was small and had shared bathrooms/ showers down the hallway. It did have a sink in the room. We were in town for a concert so just needed a place to sleep. It is walking distance to coffee shop across the street, restaurants and to Pier 39. Neighborhood was clean and felt safe oppossed to other areas of SF. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Checked into room 30 (was good except next to housekeepers & I was concerned there might be noise so moved to room 35).. It was about 8'x8' with armoire whose door was against the bed so could not open. I think this might have been a storage room. Returned to room 35 which was about 10 x 10. Problem was NOISE. On an alley with garbage trucks coming every morning early. Also people in alley talking talking talking so couldnt keep window open. Each night about 3AM there was very loud noise sounding like people moving heavy furniture. This would go on for hours No A/C so it got a bit warm in the room with window closed. All that said it was a very clean hotel. Would not stay there again.

Location of this hotel is great for the price! That's the only reason I may stay here again in the future. Other than that, I didn't enjoy having to share bathrooms, even though they were mostly clean and never busy. I learned later that you can book a room with a private bathroom. There's a restaurant right downstairs and the kitchen noise is constant, I'm talking from 7 in the morning all the way until 11:30pm or later at night, sounded like there was heavy construction going on right next to our room! or as if they moved furniture and tore walls all day/night, plus you can hear the kitchen staff chatter very loudly!! horrible! The hotel staff was very attentive and apologetic, offered to move us to another room but we walked throughout the hotel and the noise was heard everywhere! Stayed 4 nights and barely slept. It's an old hotel, so it smells like old/dirty/musty carpets. Rooms are small, they don't have TVs. If you've watched "Little house on the prairie" you'll find this hotel exactly as one you may see in that show. So, I'd visit again for a night or two only because of the location, friendly staff and affordable prices, but if I'm staying longer I rather pay the extra $$ for a newer/cleaner/quieter hotel with my own bathroom.

Room was very comfortable and staff were very nice. Everything is very old, which I loved, but there’s no AC or heating and the bathrooms are shared and down the hall so you have to be prepared for that. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you’re looking for a rustic room to use just for sleeping.

Quaint little place whose price cannot be beat, especially for the location. It is close to most things someone in SF for the first time would want to do (Fisherman’s Wharf, Downtown, The Presidio, etc…). As close as you’ll get to staying in a hostel without staying in a hostel: the rooms are quite small even for a single person, though, the bed is comfy, the shared bathrooms are functional and clean, and the desk staff is accommodating. Free coffee between 7 AM and 1 PM in the lobby to help you wake up to boot. Overall, would definitely come back here if on San Francisco, traveling solo, and/or on a budget.

We stayed here because it was 4 min walk to cable car. Yes, it is not a usual hotel. But it is a History! Was so much fun, free coffee, oldest Italian restaurant at the same building. All people been so nice, front, neighbors. Just one complain. They said they have a ghost, i didnt see it. And i was looking haha. Very great memories, great place.

Lots of very good dining options within walking distance as well as Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. I was impressed with housekeeping. They checked on me every day. Provided fresh towels and changed the sheets if I wanted. I loved the Peet's coffee machine in the lobby.

Very quaint hotel from days gone by in an excellent location in San Fran. Would def stay here again. Staff was awesome, coffee/expresso/tea available, great recommendations, and it reminded me of the boarding house Jo stayed in from Little Women. Just so quaint. Stop in at Tony’s pizza and Nanoking restaurants. Incredible food.

The location was splendid. Strange feeling that restrooms and showers are not in the room, but fits perfect with the atmosphere of the hotel. Real vintage. The restaurant on the groundfloor was very good. Very friendly staff

What an amazing hotel! Quirky, yes, but getting to enjoy the antique feel, the interesting architecture, the clean and friendly rooms and service was a treat. I cant remember the name of the old timey Italian restaurant below but the pasta was to die for and so reasonably priced! I felt like I was on a 1920s movie set!

Such a cute place to stay! I felt transported in time! We had a very comfortable stay there for three days. The hallways and some room entrances are a bit narrow. There were two showers, two seperate toilets and a sink in our section of the hotel. Do bring shower shoes. The showers had soap and shampoo in dispensers inside. Near the sink there were many amenities available: soap, mouthwash, a hair dryer, hand sanitizer, Q-tips, cotton face pads and paper towels. There was a supply of towels and a space heater in our room. That came in very handy during the cold nights. When it rained, I was able to dry out my tennis shoes. We were given one key to enter the main door and another for our room. When entering the main door, you must go up a flight of stairs, so that should be kept in mind for those with mobility issues. The rooms were comfy and nicely decorated. The only issue we had was the noise that came from the restaurant kitchen below. We heard pretty much everything for a few hours every night. Other than that, we enjoyed the stay!

I had a very pleasant stay and even though I only intended to stay 4 nights, I extended for another two to have the opportunity to enjoy more of the North Beach, Chinatown, and Union Square areas of San Francisco. Very reasonably priced and the front desk staff was very helpful in answering my questions. Having dinner one evening at the Fior d’Italia Restaurant was a 5 star experience. Real classic Italian food and the staff was friendly and very welcoming.
