The facts. Check in quick and easy. Rooms spacious. Two queen beds. Bathroom clean. TV not really useful. All rooms close walk to all facilities. Food very good and plentiful. Amazing fresh fruit - papaya, pineapple, mango etc. Two formal dining options - Japanese and Italian. Some items excellent some hot or miss. Those dining rooms never seemed full. Have to book ahead. Gym has three exercise bikes, only one with digital read out, others manual adjust resistance. Several stair climbers. Could be better air conditioned. Opens at 7am. Pool large and never over crowded. If you place a towel early enough you will get a lounge chair at pool or beach. Snack bar open all day but food a bit old - hot dogs, burgers, pizza, nachos, fries. Beach access easy and close. Large amounts of volcanic rock impede swimming in some areas. High tide limits swims due to waves and currents. But lower tide offers lots of access. Staff all friendly and helpful. Bit of a chore to get to Tamarindo town or beach. Can walk but 20 minutes in hear. Taxi is $US8. Or bus once per hour. If you want vast open beach for miles stay closer to Tamarindo. Check out quick and seamless. Airport transfer 90-120 minutes arranged thru Victor $US100 for six of us one way.

My stay 8/24/25 to 8/31/25 Hotel Lobby: Fabulous! Clean, spacious and relaxing Hotel Grounds: Gorgeous! Well maintained property, very clean with lots of photo options. Pool: Only 1, outdated but clean Staff: Kind, helpful and overall nice people. Rooms: Not modern as expected for a tropical country. But very dated, you can see where they did fixtures. First room the AC dripped water from the ceiling so we turned it off and only used the fan. Made it worst so they moved us to another room with no issues. Second room was lovely, higher sealing and the AC was on the wall whether it wanted to drip or not. It just was not dripping on me. Cleanliness is questionable and it depends on how much of a clean freak you are. The headboards, chairs, ceiling and walls had dust, dirt or spots. But my bed and bathroom had strong scent of bleach and that made me happy 😊. FOOD: Oh boy, not sure they tried. Too salty or none at all. Just very bland food options. The options were poor. For an all inclusive there were 10 and 3 of them are different sausages at all times (breakfast lunch and dinner). The drinks were simple, alcohol proof is not high so don’t expect anything strong. My overall stay was an 8/10 because of the entertainment staff. Very cool people who made the best of the stay by the pool and beach.

They say they include 2 nights at an Italian or Japanese restaurant but you have to make reservations, do it soon as possible or you may not be get in. They clean your room daily, they give 1 or 2 waters for the day, and sometimes forget to leave coffee. Go to the front desk and land they will send more to your room. There is a cold water dispenser by the bar. Bring a big tumbler for ice, cold water and beer. There is no pool side service for drinks. This is a self service property. You get your food and drinks. Overall the food is good. If your a want 5 star treatment don’t stay here. The grounds are 5 star, the rooms, food and service is 3 star at best.

Beautiful property with amazing surf! Super fun wave! The main restaurant is not air conditioned and there is not a swim up pool. But the buffet had excellent food and a good selection. Super close to downtown which is fun for food and shopping. The staff was AMAZING! Super helpful and the resort was very clean! We saw a whole family of monkeys in town and tons of fun colorful crabs and iguanas! We will definitely go back!

The only thing missing is a swim-up bar. Try the Piccadillo at breakfast. Leo on the beach can sign you up for FANTASTIC tours. Adina, who is part of the wait staff, is the absolute best. Always friendly and goes above and beyond.

I definitely enjoyed our time at Occidental, the staff are all super nice (especially someone working in the entertainment of the resort, I forgot his name, who took the time to learn our names and would always say Hello and was overall such an amazing person)and the location of the hotel is in a nice little corner on the beach allowing you to swim in a natural current that is between two beaches. It was our 10 year anniversary and the hotel provided us with a nice bottle of wine when we arrived and a nice surprise in our room with flowers! Thank you!! Some things they should do to improve satisfaction: 1. Shower head in our room was old and was not pouring the water properly. 2. Cleanliness of the pool more often. 3. Consider cooling the pool for super hot days. 4. They had an event during our last day that they only advertised 30 minutes prior to. They should definitely advertise this to the guests more in advance as it was a fun show to watch and I feel like more guests would enjoy it with proper advertising for said events. Thank you for the amazing stay!

Honestly the hotel staff were good, especially Claudio. We didn’t have strong wifi in our room and our tv wasn’t working because of the storm, but they were able to transfer us to another room. The view of the beach is ok. Their gym could be better (lot of broken cables & out of order machines), their drinks were amazing especially the PURA Vidas. What I truly did not like was the food from the buffet. I feel like it could’ve been better, breakfast, lunch and dinner. it was not at all what i expected from an all inclusive. They did have some American options but even that wasn’t too great. I would recommend taking an Uber to Tamarindo central and going to the food trucks. BEST shrimp and cheese empanadas and some AUTHENTIC Costa Rica carribean food. Overall, it was just ok.

The staff were great but there weren’t enough of them. Long lines at the bars (only 2 bars)-one day time bar, one evening bar. The buffet was understaffed. Often had to go and get our own water. Never had face towels or clothes in room!

Great spot for a family vacation in Tamarindo. Good location, close to town, about 15 minute walk, but secluded from night life and noise. Staff were super friendly. We love playing beach volleyball in the evenings with the entertainment crew.

This small resort has good qualities such as the pools/waterway off of the ocean ( good for wading and children), shady beach area, and gardens throughout the property. Service side was poor possibly because of staffing shortages. Rarely seen a server by the pool and in the dining room. Often went without a drink aside from water. Everything was self serve! Entertainers were skills dancers. Would like to see a variety of evening entertainment and more pool games to make things more lively. It’s a budget resort with average rating.

Overall a great experience at this hotel. The rooms were spacious and clean, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the beach beside the resort was a great place to spend time. A wonderful beach to watch the sunset from. The all inclusive food and drinks were convenient but the food options don’t change much for each day in the main buffet restaurant although you have the option to book the other 2 restaurants in advance (Italian or Japanese). We chose to eat dinner out a few nights as well for a change. If we come back to Tamarindo again, we would choose Occidental tal Tamarindo again.
Overall a great experience at this hotel. The rooms were spacious and clean, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the beach beside the resort was a great place to spend time. A wonderful beach to watch the sunset from. The all inclusive food and drinks were convenient but the food options don’t change much for each day in the main buffet restaurant although you have the option to book the other 2 restaurants in advance (Italian or Japanese). Read before booking!!! This property is very dated and dirty. The rooms are from the 60’s. I had lots of bugs and fiddler crabs in my room. The bed sheets were dirty, the curtains, furniture and bathroom all dirty. The cups provided for coffee were dirty. The pool and beach furniture is very old and filthy. The food is lacking and only buffet. The bar in the lobby that is open at 6 is the best. The beach area is not good for swimming lots of rocks. My room smelled like sewage.There are much nicer beaches and hotels. Do more research.

The property grounds were nice, gardens were kept neat. The rooms were very outdated and the shower didn’t drain properly. The pool was always dirty and never skimmed of its bugs or leaves. The buffet has very limited food options. We stayed for almost a week and had the same food every day. The food was flavorless and boring. The Japanese restaurant was decent and the cook did a nice job cooking for us. The Italian restaurant was awful. The food was flavorless and I had a dead fly in my meal. The staff caters to its Mexican and South American visitors. Staff was not friendly or approachable. There was only one waitress in the main buffet who was friendly and one lady in the main reception area. Her name was Jusy and she was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. This Occidental location doesn’t live up to the name, unfortunately.

We had to move rooms due to the noise from the night entertainment until 1 am and loud guests leaving the disco walking by our room. Avoid building 4. Second room was great on the opposite side of resort but matresses were very firm. Food was decent but we ate out periodically. Pool and beach were nice more for surfing not swimming.

My stay 8/24/25 to 8/31/25 Hotel Lobby: Fabulous! Clean, spacious and relaxing Hotel Grounds: Gorgeous! Well maintained property, very clean with lots of photo options. Pool: Only 1, outdated but clean Staff: Kind, helpful and overall nice people. Rooms: Not modern as expected for a tropical country. But very dated, you can see where they did fixtures. First room the AC dripped water from the ceiling so we turned it off and only used the fan. Made it worst so they moved us to another room with no issues. Second room was lovely, higher sealing and the AC was on the wall whether it wanted to drip or not. It just was not dripping on me. Cleanliness is questionable and it depends on how much of a clean freak you are. The headboards, chairs, ceiling and walls had dust, dirt or spots. But my bed and bathroom had strong scent of bleach and that made me happy 😊. FOOD: Oh boy, not sure they tried. Too salty or none at all. Just very bland food options. The options were poor. For an all inclusive there were 10 and 3 of them are different sausages at all times (breakfast lunch and dinner). The drinks were simple, alcohol proof is not high so don’t expect anything strong. My overall stay was an 8/10 because of the entertainment staff. Very cool people who made the best of the stay by the pool and beach.

I did like the beachfront area, with all the lounge chairs and proximity to the ocean. Towel service was nice, but the rooms left a bit to be desired. Showers didn’t have doors, so the floor got soaked. Thin walls and floors and ceilings, so could hear everything of our neighbors. Phone in the room didn’t work For at least 24 hours while we were there and we weren’t notified until we went to the front desk to ask about it, and then they told us they were aware and would fix it tomorrow. Was also not a covered walkway for us to get to our room through the torrential downpour without getting soaked, and very slick marble stone steps to climb to our room. So, be prepared to be exposed to the weather with your luggage. The food and drinks were ok. Bottom shelf liquor and 3star buffet meals included. Flies in the outdoor buffet near the beach, since it is left uncovered. The pool and hot tub were nice and big.

Property was clean and well maintained. The location and beach were wonderful. Everything is there for this to be a great resort but management needs to take steps to get it there. 1. Food-often overcooked with all of the meat being pressed so the juices all escaping during cooking making it very dry. The options at the a la carte Italian were blah and the Tepanyaki was ok but not enough spices used and no show. 2. Drinks-I am convinced after a week that there was no alcohol in the adult drinks. 3 adults of varying size having drinks during the day and none of us ever actually felt any type of buzz. Many times they ran out of basic ingredients and they never had more than one bar open at any time. How does a bar at a tropical resort continually run out of Pina colada and strawberry daiquiri mix. The rums and tequilas while packing no punch whatsoever tasted terrible. 3. Facilities-The resort green area is beautiful. The rooms need finishing touches. The bed lights lacked shades so basic LED bulbs were visible. The sliding door could not be closed completely while locked because of the make shift locking system that was installed. And the bathroom sliding doors had no lock for privacy and the boards making up the door were warped and see through which can make it uncomfortable when sharing a room with teenage kids. Also no drain plug in the sink so several items fell into the drain during the week.

I really wanted this to be a good stay. There’s so much room for potential in such a beautiful place but it needs work. They ran out of ice almost every day, the staff was friendly but you can tell they’re short staffed. The rooms need to be updated. The WiFi only works well near the pool and reception area. The pool was warm, and with the heat it’s not helpful to keep cool. Over all it was an OK stay. The location is secluded and the beach access and activities by the staff made it fun.

Very happy with our stay at Occidental Tamarindo! First, the staff, I’ve never felt so welcomed any where else. Plenty of food and drinks. Clean rooms and facility in general. Entertainment team made a huge effort every single night and was really appreciated by us. They go above and beyond in every show with whatever resources they have. Special mention to the tours desk in the hotel with Sibü Tours! Yusi is amazing and very personal in every interaction. The best driver ever, Manrique, is all you need when looking for a friend in an unknown destination! He’s our friend now! Francisco, the guide, was fun, friendly and informative (5 stars), and Don Diego the big boss, a very humble, pleasant and friendly guy. Such a great team! We’re already planning to go to Occidental again!

Everything was average, but the service is poor, but it’s my first time in Costa Rica. Perhaps, it’s that way everywhere in CR. The restaurant had less than half of the staff than other places all inclusive that we have stayed in Mexico. The bar by the pool didn’t allow people to go get a drink if we were wet which makes total sense. However, there wasn’t any waiter to take guests their drinks to the pool which doesn’t make any sense. I am used to having a few waiters take drinks to the pool and even the beach area everywhere in Mexico and a few other countries that I have visited.

We weren't sure what to expect from this all inclusive, but it met our needs. Check in was a bit of a hassle, not enough staff, but when they greet you with a nice cold drink, it helps! There were some issues with pool towel tickets, and not enough towels for everyone upon arrival, as most people went right to the pool, but not a big deal. The room access was nice with a wristband that was chip enabled to open your room without having to fumble around and carry a card. The daily buffet had a very nice selection of fresh foods, and the 2 restaurants onsite were good, we liked the Italian better than the hibachi. The snack bar was average, with burgers, fries, chips, etc. Sometimes those items were picked over, cold, or had been sitting out for a while. But the drinks made up for it! Overall a nice place. With a little investment, it could be great!

The Occidental Tamarindo is one of a handful of All Inclusives in Costa Rica. Keep in mind if you’re looking for a Mexican Style “let’s get wasted resort” this is not what you’re looking for. The pace is relaxed and the food at the buffets is local style. If you want steak It’s good but it’s also Not tender like American/Canadian beef. They rate the resort 4/5 stars, really what you have are rooms that would be 3’s, they are ample size comfortable and clean but they were never finished with that 5star building quality to warrant 5 stars. The service is friendly and upbeat, but also laid back. The pool is excellent as is the beach area. Great tours depart from the area and it’s a wonderful place for a great family vacation or couples trip

Slow check in. Charged more than we had been quoted through Hotel. Com for additional traveller. Left to find our room and no additional bed as requested. This was sorted but paid more than expected and almost as much again for the original booking for 2 for a single bed to be added to room. This issue not resolved having contacted Hotel.com. Best thing about the hotel is location on a surf beach. Staff in the AI restaurant friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the Italian, tho felt this was a bit rushed and the Japanese restaurants. Plenty of choice in the buffet but restaurant not air conditioned so can be warm.

The food/drink service staff were great, the property is small and easy to navigate. It is also close to town, walkable or you can get a cheap uber. Views of the rainforest were beautiful and it was easy to book excursions. The spa has reasonable prices and the deep tissue massage was amazing. The front desk staff were less than helpful and refused to assist members of my group with room issues. We had 11 people in our group and we all had different supplies and issues with our rooms. Some didn’t have towels, toilet paper, lights didn’t work, etc. Front desk staff did not relay needs to housekeeping. It took over two days for toilet paper to be delivered, the front said that it was a housekeeping issue and would not provide any paper. I had to write a note to housekeeping asking for more water after two front desk staff didn’t tell them.

Overall a great experience at this hotel. The rooms were spacious and clean, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the beach beside the resort was a great place to spend time. A wonderful beach to watch the sunset from. The all inclusive food and drinks were convenient but the food options don’t change much for each day in the main buffet restaurant although you have the option to book the other 2 restaurants in advance (Italian or Japanese). We chose to eat dinner out a few nights as well for a change. If we come back to Tamarindo again, we would choose Occidental tal Tamarindo again.
Overall a great experience at this hotel. The rooms were spacious and clean, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the beach beside the resort was a great place to spend time. A wonderful beach to watch the sunset from. The all inclusive food and drinks were convenient but the food options don’t change much for each day in the main buffet restaurant although you have the option to book the other 2 restaurants in advance (Italian or Japanese). A great family atmosphere at the resort. The location of the resort is right on Langosta beach with gorgeous sunsets and crashing waves. The food is average. The drinks are average and served in paper cups so bring an insulated cup with you. The resort is very clean and the staff are very polite and hard working. The grounds are safe and the gardens are lovely. I would gladly stay at this resort again.

Beautiful property with amazing surf! Super fun wave! The main restaurant is not air conditioned and there is not a swim up pool. But the buffet had excellent food and a good selection. Super close to downtown which is fun for food and shopping. The staff was AMAZING! Super helpful and the resort was very clean! We saw a whole family of monkeys in town and tons of fun colorful crabs and iguanas! We will definitely go back!

Great spot for a family vacation in Tamarindo. Good location, close to town, about 15 minute walk, but secluded from night life and noise. Staff were super friendly. We love playing beach volleyball in the evenings with the entertainment crew.

Its a beautiful property with a lot of wildlife. the food was typical buffet food you get at most all inclusive. Very hard to find water onsite. You have to do either tap water or hope the dining room is open. I asked front desk for a bottle of water when I was headed out on an all day excursion and they said they didn't have any to give me. Our room was close to where they have the nightly entertainment which starts near 9pm and was very loud. I go to be early so if you're like me do not get a room close to that as it overpowered my noise cancelling headphones it was so loud. Seemed like there could be 2 sets of rules for drinks near the pool. we had plastic bottles for water and were not allowed to have them at the pool side, but locals seemed to not have that same rule. The beach is gorgeous and the River was nice and cool to hang out in. Its a convenient location within walking distance to shopping and dining. Overall a good experience.

The food at this resort is absolutely horrible. The breakfast buffet is okay. The lunch buffet is disgusting and was the same food over and over. The dinner buffet was just as bad. We ended up going into town for lunch and dinner the remaining of our stay. The pool snack bar food is disgusting and I can not believe they get away with serving this food. Absolutely not even edible. Dried up and the bread is hard like a hickey puck. Most of the time the food was not even out at the listed times.

My stay 8/24/25 to 8/31/25 Hotel Lobby: Fabulous! Clean, spacious and relaxing Hotel Grounds: Gorgeous! Well maintained property, very clean with lots of photo options. Pool: Only 1, outdated but clean Staff: Kind, helpful and overall nice people. Rooms: Not modern as expected for a tropical country. But very dated, you can see where they did fixtures. First room the AC dripped water from the ceiling so we turned it off and only used the fan. Made it worst so they moved us to another room with no issues. Second room was lovely, higher sealing and the AC was on the wall whether it wanted to drip or not. It just was not dripping on me. Cleanliness is questionable and it depends on how much of a clean freak you are. The headboards, chairs, ceiling and walls had dust, dirt or spots. But my bed and bathroom had strong scent of bleach and that made me happy 😊. FOOD: Oh boy, not sure they tried. Too salty or none at all. Just very bland food options. The options were poor. For an all inclusive there were 10 and 3 of them are different sausages at all times (breakfast lunch and dinner). The drinks were simple, alcohol proof is not high so don’t expect anything strong. My overall stay was an 8/10 because of the entertainment staff. Very cool people who made the best of the stay by the pool and beach.

The staff here are outstanding—friendly, helpful, and truly make you feel welcome. Unfortunately, the property itself is worn and needs maintenance. Dining options are also limited and not very appealing. Great service, but the facilities and food could use improvement.

Long wait to check in. The room was not clean, no bath towels, sink was leaking, toilet not shutting off, the refrigerator was not stocked and the AC stopped working. The food was ok. The Italian restaurant food was unacceptable someone needs to teach them how to cook.

Not really an all inclusive that you get in every other country. Food subpar. Even their exclusive restaurants the food was not good at all. And they limit your food and drinks. Better off going into downtown tamarindo

Pros- entertainment, grounds beautiful, staff is friendly for the most part. Lobby area ok. Lots of locals (we like Cons- Food variety was poor. Everyday you will get one selection each of chicken, pork and beef. Rice, beans, salad veggies. That’s it. Don’t eat from the cold meat lines, always flies. Depending on who does the omelette station the ingredients will be left open to flies. Infrastructure, food stations need an upgrade. My room also had a sewage smell.

Is a very nice resort, the buffet food had a good variety. They had fruit out at every meal. The staff was very helpful. We went to italian restaurant for one dinner, the food was excellent. The service was excellent there too. The check in and out was quick. Remember to drink water, it is very warm outside, especially when you are in sun. The beach was beautiful but it has a lot of large rocks. I am not a beach person but ocean views were spectacular.

We weren't sure what to expect from this all inclusive, but it met our needs. Check in was a bit of a hassle, not enough staff, but when they greet you with a nice cold drink, it helps! There were some issues with pool towel tickets, and not enough towels for everyone upon arrival, as most people went right to the pool, but not a big deal. The room access was nice with a wristband that was chip enabled to open your room without having to fumble around and carry a card. The daily buffet had a very nice selection of fresh foods, and the 2 restaurants onsite were good, we liked the Italian better than the hibachi. The snack bar was average, with burgers, fries, chips, etc. Sometimes those items were picked over, cold, or had been sitting out for a while. But the drinks made up for it! Overall a nice place. With a little investment, it could be great!

Our experience here was great, however all issues we had were with the dining area and staff. When they ran out of an item like coffee, creamer, plates, beer, etc, they didn't get replenished. Staff would say they ran out. They seemed to be short-staffed. Also, the 7:00pm dining time is late for those who get up early. 6:00pm would have been better. We ended up eating out every night rather than waiting. Food was sub-par. We were sick one night from the hamburgers in the snack area being undercooked. The self-serve beer was great but we only had it 2 days and then it was "broken". Lines at the snack bar for alcoholic drinks were very long and the drinks were very diluted. Other than that, we had a nice time and a beautiful view from our room. Lots of good restaurants in the area.

The location and amenities were top notch. The beach directly in front has volcanic rock but there is sandy beach during low tide on the left side. The waves are amazing and there are surfers to watch all day. The only complaint is the lineups. With only one Buffett and two bars and one small snack bar for all of the rooms at the hotel it made for long lineups for food.

The property is older but very nice. It was nice and quiet and not really a party place. Just wish they had more activities to do and the biggest let down was the location of the beachfront. Not very nice looking but in town the beach was amazing. The restaurant was decent not spectacular. I just found the staff mot very attentive almost had to always go to them for something especially at dinner. Very rarely checking up on you or filling your water or offer drinks. Did I hate it? No but I didnt exactly love it. Probably won't stay again
