Casa Rocosa I Midcentury Home on 5 Private Acres Near Park

We loved this house! This is our 2nd visit to Joshua Tree and this was better than the first time. The house is beautiful and nicely updated. The kitchen has everything. The windows and the views are amazing! We loved the record player and being able to cook on the grill. The hot tub was absolutely awesome under the stars. We were there during a new moon and it was magical sitting in the hot tub looking at the Milky Way.

Great location. Comfortable home. Clean. Enjoyed hot tub and coyote serenades.

Lovely property, mid century but new kitchen with everything we needed and new bathrooms, hot tub was perfect with the outdoor shower! Binders and small notes made everything easy. Very comfy beds! And plenty of room for 5 adults and our dog. It’s desert but very few chollas on the property to worry about with our dog. Night sky was awesome! 2 miles from the JTP entrance so that was great! Property manager wanted to know when we arrived and left- unnecessary, since we had her number if we needed anything. Would highly recommend as one of the best houses we have stayed at!!!

Vera is a wonderful host and we had a great stay at the Zen House. The views from the deck made for the perfect place to watch the sunrise and sunset, and the star gazing from the hot tub is fantastic. The house was very clean and we love the decor. We had plenty of towels and bathrobes. The kitchen had coffee, tea and pantry items like salt/pepper and oil. One thing to note is that you'll be on a long gravel road leading up to the house.

This is such a peaceful property. You can’t hear anything but the wind and birds. There are so many places to sit outside and enjoy nature. The house is just as described. It’s really close to Joshua Tree National park. Vera, the property manager is very sweet and helpful. I would love to stay longer next time

What an amazing experience! So many seating options created outside. Go out to the lower patio seating to look at the stars. Honestly, a great experience.

The Zen House truly has zen feel. There's a fabulous freestanding patio with comfortable seating and wonderful views. Just the place for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. The house is stocked with everything you could possibly need. There are also gorgeous views from the living spaces. My two sisters and I the best time in this beautiful, peaceful place.

Last year the same week I stayed at Zen House for the first time with two friends who had never been to Joshua Tree (I have been there several times at a different property). We loved it so much that we booked for 2023 as soon as we got home and it was very much worth the wait. As before, we were in want for nothing at the house, inside and out. Vera is a great host in every respect and this time we had the pleasure of meeting her in person. We enjoyed many sunrises, birds, flowers, animals, cacti, and a beautiful red racer snake. The park entrance is super close and we hiked a different trail every day, capped off with outdoor showers, cocktails on the awesome patio, and hot tubbing under the stars. An amazing second stay and I look forward to bringing other friends to Zen House in the future.

We spent four nights and enjoyed all aspects our our time. Finding places to walk (on dirt roads) just off the property for great exercise, easy access to JTree National Park, time at the Pioneer Preserve, all of it close by and wonderful. Cooked all of our meals and enjoyed the kitchen being open to the grater room so we could talk. Time in the hot tub was nice. Stars, wildlife, and big time quite. Would stay here again.

This is based on our stay at this particular time. Your trip could be different. Just as advertised. If you want to be near the Joshua Tree National Park this place will do. Very close to the west end gate. The host is very good with communication and instructions. The house is not a new house but is kept in great condition with many upgrades. We had everything that we needed available to us. Nice, quiet views and plenty of space to enjoy them. We loved the record player with vintage albums, kind of added to the charm of the house. Plenty of room to park four cars. If you know nothing about the area, though we did, be prepared for a little bit of dirt road driving. Pretty much any car could make the trip I think. We were here in early spring so the weather was perfect. The family has already made comments about coming back for another stay.

The house itself was clean and quaint, in excellent proximity to Joshua Tree National Park West Entrance. It has a well stocked kitchen. Downsides the development is on bumpy dirt roads, some of which are rutted and badly eroded. The driveway is dirt and steep. A pickup or suv will have no problem but if you are in a passenger car you might scrape your muffler in spots. A sports car could present a big problem. Saying the house is at the end of a dirt road in the listing doesn't accurately reflect the condition of the road. Another big downside was the shower heads appear to be clogged with minerals or the plumbing wasn't correct when the bathroom renovation was performed. The shower spray is abysmal. The kitchen sink faucet sprayer worked fine though. We noticed the strong smell of gas coming from the clothes dryer the last day we were there, and I would definitely inquire before renting asking the property manager if she had a licensed plumber inspect and certify no gas leak :O. One other thing to consider is there are really only 2.5 bathrooms as the 3rd bathroom has the laundry where the shower or tub would go. There is an outdoor shower behind the 3rd bedroom but if it's cold out you won't want to use it. The walk from the driveway into the house has steps and is not handicap accessible. Overall value for cost of stay 3 stars.

Over the course of 11 years, we've logged a total of 99 nights. So you know we love it. Over that time, we've seen changes of ownership, renovations to the house, steep price increases, and lots of changes in the JT & JT Highlands community. But one constant is the property manager, Vera, who does a great job. The house is well stocked and in general, conducive for living in. What brings me back, even in June when the AC fails to keep up with the heat, is the peace and quiet. Between that, the quails and the view from the patio, it rejuvenates. Of course, not all is perfect... Aside from the general hell of dealing with VRBO and their added fee, there are a few minor suggestions... I would love a deeper cleaning of the house... rugs shampooed, vents vacuumed. Also, an AC in the living room that actually works, a sharpened chef's knife, new towels/sheets (pretty sure we've seen the same ones for 11 years). But these are lesser, fixable issues. Of a more serious nature are some challenges to the Zen-like feel. Too much noise on occasion from another rental house nearby that seems designed for partying. Sound really carries in this area ! And now, I hear rumors that another house may be built on the property. Should that happen, we will not be back. Simple as that.

Great spot! Beautiful scenery from the house. Close to downtown and the Joshua tree park. Spacious and fully equipped house to accommodate your needs.

A very nice house with lots of windows to take advantage of the views. 10 minutes to the Park entrance. The road is fine for two wheel drive but rough. A little annoying that the advertised price is for only 2 guests with a significant up charge for more than two. Tricksy. But an increasingly common practice.

Perfect location if you want to explore the park and surrounding area. Beautiful views from house. Relaxing time and really lived up to its name. Had every amenity one could need. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

This house has an amazing view, and is very comfortable. Part of the appeal is how far it is from civilization, yet only a few minutes from the Joshua Tree park entrance or the town itself. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to come back!

The beautiful and expansive views of the valley were a highlight. Only a 5 min. drive to the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. The house was spacious and the kitchen and baths newly remodeled. Vera was the perfect liaison. I would highly recommend this place in peaceful Joshua Tree.

The views are absolutely amazing! The seclusion is beyond awesome! The pristine soaking tub comes with an unforgettable view of the many boulders embedded into the mountainside and interesting desert plants on a sunny afternoon. Unique and out of the way and Vera is a rare find, so helpful and super nice! The Mid-Century modern vibe is both inviting and historical, The updated kitchen and baths are welcoming...lovely stay!

The zen house is a perfect getaway! Tucked away from the hustle of every day living this is a great place to unplug from the world and enjoy peace and quiet. It’s conveniently close to all the local spots in Pioneer Town. Most importantly, Vera is a very accommodating host and easily reachable for any and all questions. This is without a doubt a destination that we can’t wait to come back to!

Our THIRD stay at the Zen house and could not have been better! The house deserves 5 star ratings for everything - and Vera is one of the best hosts you will ever find! My wife and I are looking forward to coming back next year as we have made staying at the Zen house an annual tradition!
