Pepper Tree Inn Tahoe City

Location is central in Tahoe City and has lake views. Office only open 3PM - 10PM. Hotel is not kept up. Linens in room were torn and towels frayed. Beams supporting upper walkway were seriously rusted and a potential hazard. Rooms do not have fire sprinklers. Wallpaper poorly patched. Electrical outlet in one nightstand loose and not working.Carpet stained. Pool closed and full of mulch. Overall sad condition. Wish I could attach photos I took of these conditions.

Overall, the property is centrally located and priced appropriately for what you get. However, it is very dated. - The elevator is small - fits no more than 4 adults, it’s very slow, and the permit is expired by a couple of years. - The rooms are small and old, but since we used this as just a place to sleep, the size wasn’t an issue. They do use a room spray, like febreze, that was quite overwhelming when we first got into the room. Highly suggest you keep the windows open to ventilate if you’re sensitive to strong fragrances as I am. -Beds were comfortable and clean, pillows were fine. - The parking is a bit of a hassle since we couldn’t fit in the underground spaces with our truck. Coming back after 9pm, we had to park on the street. - There’s no a/c which we were aware of but there is a fan and window in the bathroom that gives a good breeze. We didn’t feel comfortable keeping the front window open as it was right next to our bed and opened to the walkway. There was also road construction overnight during our stay so the sound was too loud to keep the window open anyways. - Check-in is slow as the front desk/lobby holds 1 person at a time so you wait outside if there’s multiple guests checking in. Also, our keys didn’t work the first try so we had to haul our stuff back down to get them to work. - There’s NO pool. It has been filled in with dirt and seemingly some lawn games and a coffee trailer. Not an issue for us but something to note.

OK, this property is in need of some repairs (especially the stairways!), but the rooms were clean & comfortable & even though the desk was only manned gor a limited amount of hours, the staff was very helpful. Dining option accross the street on the lake was lovely.

This is a no frills motel/Inn. I have gone twice now and they do not have a daily maid service, the pool is full of dirt with no intention of emptying or using as a pool which is OK. This being said the Monday night to Thursday night rate is fair but, for a weekend stay it is outrages for what you receive- even for a no frills Motel/Inn. Again this is a Motel/Inn not a Hotel as advertised.

You can’t use the pool because it is filled in with dirt !

Great location! Great price point. However you will get what you pay for. There were very few amenities. The pool is not open. There is no free breakfast. It's almost like staying at a motel. But with a great view! Additionally, all of my food went sour in the fridge which I have no idea how that happened. The manager does plan to reach out to me regarding that situation. Also the stairs and railing seem a little bit unsafe. I was on the the 6th floor with under two and it was a little worrisome.

Room was decent and served its purpose. Heater constantly makes a buzzing noise and hard to operate as the thermostat only has a dial with no markings for temp and no ability to turn the unit off. The staircase is literally crumbling which made me question the overall structural integrity. (There is an elevator). The pool was absolutely disgusting. I saw this in other reviews and didn’t care because we were there in the spring to snowboard, not swim. However, if the pool stays that way, it will be a mosquito breeding ground. It literally looks like a public health safety issue. They have a parking garage but that has low clearance (my lifted FJ cruiser) would not fit. There are a handful of exterior parking spots but it’s first come first serve. Once we were parked I was fearful of leaving and not being able to secure a spot when returning. Positives: we had an amazing view of the lake from our room. Lots of restaurants close by. Reasonable drive to palisades/alpine.

Overall a great stopover place thats nice and clean. Only dropped a star for the difficulty of the parking lot.

The hotel was probably nice in the 1970's, but hasn't been maintained since. Lights burned out, bird poop, terribly weathered, pool filled in with dirt, everything dirty outside, crappie repairs in the room etc. The worst part was the all night jack hammering in the street in front of the property. I talked with the construction supervisor and he said they informed the hotel management 5 days before we arrived and they did not even mention it. Trying to sleep with jackhammering from 9pm to 6 am is not enjoyable on a vacation.

Third time staying here and we’ve always been happy. The location is wonderful. You are right across the street from the lake and some cute shops and restaurants. The rooms have been clean every time. I gave a three for facilities because the stairs are in serious disrepair and the pool isn’t a pool, so if you’re coming for that, you likely aren’t going to get it. Not sure what they’re doing with it but it’s been out of commission for the past couple of years. All in all, I recommend!

Property building is not new but it’s very clean inside the room. They do a really good job keeping the room clean.

It was cockroach friendly, for the price it was okay

Room smelled bad possibly from carpet that gets wet in winter from skiers boots and gear. Probably moldy underneath. when I got home and unpacked my suitcase my nightgown smelled like the room and we only slept there one night. Staff friendly. Nice view. Would never stay again.

first room I was given was not cleaned. Second room was cleaned but still gross. Yuck

it's incredible 3 days with not cleaning the room, thats unacceptable no clean towels no soap or shampoo need to be compensated on what i paid, was not worth it

The location of this hotel was excellent! Right in the middle of downtown, very walkable. The rooms were clean and the staff were friendly. This big issue was the condition of the facility. Every common area was dirty, much of it was rusty and crumbling. A little cleanup and update would make this a great place to stay...

Clean room, enough towels, nice walk-in shower, and office staff were delightful and helpful.

Room was very small. No AC and a simple fan. At top of elevator there was no way to open windows for fan while maintaining privacy. Elevator was old and very dirty. Mattress was horrible. You could feel the springs through the bedding.

The view and location is nice but with no ac it can get loud. They do provide fans. The worst are the beds which are some of the hardest I've ever slept on.

Our stay at Pepper tree was ok but nothing to write home about. When they say check in is at 4pm they mean not a minute sooner. On the site it showed a pool and air conditioning they had neither. Also there wasnt any where to sit in the room or outside the room. If you are looking for just a place to sleep then this is the place but if you are looking for a relaxing stay not so much.

Really nice staff. Beautiful view from the seventh floor. My room had several lightbulbs out and outlets not working. Also, the corridor outside was pretty dark. Other than that, it was clean and comfortable, and I would stay again.

The rooms have clearly been updated, but the external parts of the building are in serious need of a face lift. The stairwell next to the (tiny and dated) elevator is best described as cave-like. The outside stairs are crumbling. Noise is the biggest problem though. You can easily hear your neighbors through the walls and (in summer) through the windows. (Speaking of which, the bathroom window opens for a cross breeze but has no screen.) The location is awesome. Nice views of the lake, easy walking access to pretty much everything.

The bed was not so great and there was no AC in the room, just heater was available.

Walking distance to the beach and town, which is very convenient. However, I was surprised there’s no A/C, and the room gets extremely hot, which gave me headaches. Internet was also quite slow. For an extra $50, I’d choose a place with A/C for more comfort.

From the upper floors (7th or 6th) the view of the lake is wonderful.

Staff was very pleasant. A few things, such as USB ports and outlets on the bedside tables either functioned poorly or not at all. But nice room otherwise.

Unavailable staff and poor customer service. Got out of there as fast as I could. I was denied help when I requested it. My needs were not acknowledged or heard.

Friendly staff quick service for towels but office hours weren’t ideal sometimes it was closed.

This hotel accused us smoking in the room which we didn’t do at all. We don’t smoke at all. That’s ridiculous and they charged us $250. We checked in on 9/2 and checked out next morning around 5:55 9/3 but no one in the office. We paid for two days stay but we don’t like the hotel because of its environment so we left one day early.

Office hours very limited,3pm-10pm. Don’t expect earlier check in than 3. Was given room early but with a guilt trip and attitude. Room was basically clean but the air freshener was over powering and it took a couple hours with both windows open to air it out. I smelled it in other rooms as I walked past as well. Thankfully the weather was warm so we could air it out.

Tahoe City is lovely, reminiscent of a village on a lake in the Swiss Alps (It could hardly get more beautiful or charming), and is also a short drive to Palisades at Tahoe. The Pepper Tree Inn is in the middle of town, walking distance to a the biking/walking path along the Lake, a wonderful lakeside public park and beach, a Safeway supermarket, numerous restaurants, ski/snowboard shops, and sits on a hill overlooking the lake. So I give the setting and location an A . It offers the best value for price in town (and would be more so if I hadn’t had to pay a $40 pet cleaning fee for one night for our poodle who doesn’t shed). On the downside, the appliances were dated (especially microwave, which required fiddling with the power cord to get it to work), but better than another place in TC we stayed that charged more and had no microwaves in the rooms or lobby at all. We were on the first floor and could hear every step of our upstairs neighbors, and they apparently had rambunctious kids (which I understand, as we do as well), who sounded like a herd of elephants stampeding above us. That’s just the nature of the building due to its age and construction. The front desk staff is very nice and helpful, but they are only on the property 3-10 pm. Overall, I would choose to stay here again if I returned to Tahoe City, and would recommend it to budget conscious travelers.

It would have been nice if the staff would have answered my messages instead of sending automated responses.

Nice view of the lake from the 5th floor, helpful clerk at check in, which was closed most of the time otherwise. Great price for comfortable stay.

Terrific location across the street from the lake. Nice restaurants within a short walk. Hotel is older but met our needs.

Convenient and right in the heart of Tahoe City

Location was great. We have a great view of the lake. Didn't need to drive, we rode our bike or walked.

This is an older property but, we were very pleased with its location; central to shopping, dining and the lake was right across the street. We will definitely stay here again.

The hotel is very near the stores, restaurants, ski resort, and the lake. Everything is fine in the hotel.

Located near lots of restaurants, bars, shops, and a beach. Great place to stay if you want to be within walking distance to lots of places.

The location of this hotel is EXACTLY why I will be booking again. Despite the condition of the building, it is literally in the center of the Tahoe City community. Across the street from Commons beach, dining and shops next door, and a 7 minute walk from the nearest grocery store! The location cannot be beat.

The location of the property does not get better. Restaurants, boat/ kayak rentals, bus services, and walking trails are very close by. Above all, you get wide-angle view of the Lake if you are on the 6th/7th floors. They stopped the breakfast, they should consider restarting it. Also, the office is open just for 7 hrs during the day (3-10 pm). They should consider staffing the office for 24 hrs. The hotel does not have AC - during the summer months, it could be a challenge.

Great Central location. Walk to several Tahoe city restaurants. Rosie's is a great dining option. 3 meals/day.

This is a pretty basic hotel in an older building. However it is very clean and and is a good value for the price. It was considerably cheaper that most other options around when I stayed there. The location is great. Right on the lake within a walking distance from restaurants, a grocery store, shops, etc. One thing that I didn’t like is that I appeared that there was not enough parking for all of the rooms. When I arrived, almost all parking spots had been taken and I was told it was “first come first serve”. Luckily, I was able to find a spot in their small underground garage where only smaller cars fit. They advertise as a hotel with parking not a “hotel with parking if you are lucky”.

The front office staff was so friendly and helpful. She got us in as soon as our room was ready, helped with some utensils, and was all around a very pleasant person. There was pretty heavy duty construction on the street in front but most things were walking distance. Room was clean beautiful view of the lake. The pool isn’t a pool anymore, maybe turning into a garden as it full of dirt. Parking was good. If you have kids, it’s a block from a commons beach that has a playground. A block the other way is a pizza place that has a kids section that helps entertain. Great visit for a reasonable cost.

We used it as our home base while skiing at Palisades Tahoe. The hotel is very well located for this, and there are several restaurants and bars within a short walking distance. I highly recommend Za’s restaurant which is on the waterfront

The location is perfect for walking to shops and restaurants in Tahoe City. The property itself is in need of an uplift and some renovation.
