The hotel was just below the train station but it was still very quiet. The rooms were updated and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent with a variety of hot and cold foods. We walked down the hill to dinner, sightseeing and shopping and took the tram up. Transportation was free because of the pass the hotel gives you. Excellent place to stay!

Check in was fast, excellent service by Mr. Giuseppe at the front desk. He was very helpful in arranging a late dinner for us. The hotel staff is amazing. The hotel is very close to the train station but reaching there with luggage can be a major issue especially at night or if the weather is bad.. the only access to the hotel is to go down through a steep hill or stairs. There is a cable car from the train station but you have to climb up the hill to the hotel. On our return trip, we had to take a cab to go back to the train station with our luggage...

We arrived in Lugano by train and the hotel is just across the road from the station, albeit many metres down the hill. No problem there are semi gentle ramps to the hotel front door. The staff at reception were jolly and helpful to say the least. Online check in streamlined the process and should be used at other hotels. This is a great innovation. Up the elevator and into the room. Spectacular room with amazing views of the town, lake and mountains from the balcony. A superb bed and air conditioning, blockout blinds nice bathroom made me wish I was staying longer. Not far back to the station for the Bernina express in the morning. Catch the funicular from the church next door or push your bags up the ramps if you are a bit fit. My only wish is there was the option of a plain sheet instead of the Swiss dogonas available on the beds in summer. This would be a greener option on hot nights.

This was a lovely and well maintained hotel. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and very clean. Room wasn’t big but very comfortable and clean, bathroom was really small but it didn’t bother us. Best part was the staff - very nice and kind, always smiling. Breakfast was very good - juice, coffee, eggs, yogurt, fresh bread etc. We also had dinner at their restaurant and enjoyed the food and service. Will be willing to stay there again.

The staff were very friendly. Our room including the bathroom was exceptionally clean. Disposable slippers and still and sparkling water were provided with a surprise. Though the room was a bit pricey, I would still highly recommend it to anyone who would like to stay with a walkable distance to Lugano Station.

I love the idea of Hotel Federale. It is an old Lugano hotel with many of the original design features still in place. It is close to the old town, the train station, and to the lake, just a short walk away. The bathroom was tiny and the shower had mildew in some cracks and crevices. The bed was comfortable. There was air conditioning. Considerating all the other places we stayed this was okay but not the best

As other reviewers noted... even four years ago, the rooms and bathrooms are really dated, at least the one we got. That said, it was incredibly clean and comfortable but just be prepared for a very old hotel. Dinner was good and breakfast was fine. There are some great views from the balcony if your room has one. Service was very good.

Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Rezeption, Bar und Restaurant sind neu renoviert, sehr gepflegt und schön. Unser Zimmer (Standard) war klein aber soweit ok. Das Badzimmer generell ist klein. Die Dusche ist sehr klein. Der Wasserdruck der Brause war viel zu wenig stark. Mit diesem Wasserduck ist es unmöglich das Shampoo aus langen Haaren zu waschen. Das Frühstuck ist hervorragend.

Loved being just a bit removed from the madding crowd. From our room (corner with a wrap-around balcony), we had the most stunning view imaginable of the city and lake below. It was a wonderful experience.

Location and staff were great. The walls are thin so it was pretty noisy because of the loud guests. Obviously the hotel can’t do much about that. The location and friendly staff made it a super pleasant stay.

We had a lovely room with panoramic views and two balconies. The view of the town and lake were wonderful. The staff were always very attentive. They have a delicious breakfast buffet. I would not hesitate to stay here again. It has a great location, you can walk to the train station and to town.

Very friendly and thoughtful staff. Go over and above to be helpful. Breakfast was great & waitstaff were extremely attentive. We arrived early & front desk person checked to see if our room was available & was able to let us in early which allowed us to visit more of the old town area. Right down the hill from the train station on easy ramp.

It was great! The staffs were nice and helpful especially Paolo for being very friendly! The room and bathroom were spacious! The restaurant served delicious dinners and breakfast! We enjoyed it very much and had a great time!

We had a great stay here! The location was amazing as it was so close to the city center of Lugano. We easily walked from the hotel to all the busiest spots in the city. Amazing food surrounds this place as well as stores for shopping. The included breakfast was pretty good as well! The only negative experience we had was with one of the staff. I was pushed into getting a drink I did not want, even after I declined it a couple of times, since they did not want what I actually wanted. And after, I had told them I wanted to pay for the drink bill right away, not put it on the room because I wanted to use a different card for the drink order. Again, same person kept pushing to put it on the room when I had told them “No” about a dozen times. Finally, he gave up and left so I could take care of it with the supportive staff at the front desk. Other than that abnormal experience, we had a great stay!
We had a great stay here! The location was amazing as it was so close to the city center of Lugano. We easily walked from the hotel to all the busiest spots in the city. Finally, he gave up and left so I could take care of it with the supportive staff at the front desk. Other than that abnormal experience, we had a great stay!

We appreciated that the Hotel is a short, easy walk from the train station and then a quick walk into town. What sets the hotel apart is the service from the staff -- everyone from the front desk to the waiters at breakfast were so friendly and helpful. It was really a great experience.

The hotel was just below the train station but it was still very quiet. The rooms were updated and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent with a variety of hot and cold foods. We walked down the hill to dinner, sightseeing and shopping and took the tram up. Transportation was free because of the pass the hotel gives you. Excellent place to stay!

Check in was fast, excellent service by Mr. Giuseppe at the front desk. He was very helpful in arranging a late dinner for us. The hotel staff is amazing. The hotel is very close to the train station but reaching there with luggage can be a major issue especially at night or if the weather is bad.. the only access to the hotel is to go down through a steep hill or stairs. There is a cable car from the train station but you have to climb up the hill to the hotel. On our return trip, we had to take a cab to go back to the train station with our luggage...

We stayed at Federale Lugano for 2 nights. It is very close to the train station, and easy to get to by taking Funicular from the train station to Cathedral stop. Room wasn’t big but very comfortable and clean, bathroom was really small but it didn’t bother us. Best part was the staff - very nice and kind, always smiling. Breakfast was very good - juice, coffee, eggs, yogurt, fresh bread etc. We also had dinner at their restaurant and enjoyed the food and service. Will be willing to stay there again.

The location is excellent- just down the hill from the train/bus station. And just up the hill from the shopping district. Everything is walkable. We loved the hotel. The room was larger than expected with a small balcony and dark blinds to keep the light out at night. The staff were outstanding. They were all extremely professional, delightful to speak with, and had the right dash of humour. Nothing was too difficult. Breakfast wasn't over the top but fresh and tasty. There is a walk down into Lugano town and a walk back up the hill. I came here because it is close to the train station. I brought my 84 year old mother and she was able to walk up and down with mini breaks. It is a family owned hotel which I would highly recommend.

The staff is absolutely amazing. Truly the kindest and nicest people out of our whole trip throughout Switzerland and Italy. It’s an older home but extremely clean and it’s very well kept. I normally never leave reviews but this place and staff truly stood out.
