Essex House Hotel

They should NOT advertise there is a pool. I would have stayed somewhere else if this was reflecting in the description. Highly disappointed.

I traveled with two kids and searched for hotels with swimming pool. Essex House came up with the pool filter, however Essex House does not have a swimming pool - and the adjacent Clevelander pool we supposedly should have access to was for adults only. I suggest "pool" should be removed from the list of amenities when kids are added to the booking, to avoid very disappointed under age travelers!

Parking is sooo confusing ,they only offer valet parking which uses the same next door public parking garage ,so if you go into the parking garage before you check in and ask where to park you are hit with 2 parking fees garage plus the hotels valet parking which you have to take cuz parking garage one is flat fee of 30 /5hrs resets every 5hrs !!!, pictures show they have a pool , which they don’t the next door hotel does which apparently they share but it’s mainly catered to adults /night club

We booked a room for a family with young kids. We went to use the pool the morning after we checked in and were told that the pool is for 21 years and older only, which had not been told to us before booking. We immediately checked out of the hotel and moved to a different hotel. Up until that point, we had had a mostly poor experience anyway and the pool being unavailable was the final straw. The hotel was outdated, more noticeable than in the pictures. Many of the amenities were not actually in the building but a short walk away. The elevator was broken, and it seemed had been that way for sometime. It seemed this hotel was geared toward a spring break party crowd and not a family. It was very loud at night. We could hear everything happening outside. A drunk man was banging on the door across the hall for about 45 minutes straight at 4AM. Redeeming qualities: The hotel is in a great location, walking distance to restaurants and the beach. The hotel staff was very friendly. I spoke to the manager about my disappointment with the pool situation and he did agree to refund us for the rest of our planned stay so that we could move to a different hotel with pool access for the kids.

Excellent location. On corner; short walks near everything. The amenities indicate beach towels and chairs-true. However, this beach area is five blocks away. Quite a walk AND it doesn't include umbrella--which was $55! What a joke. Parking is no where to be found - which they indicate there is parking--so opted for Valet at $50 a day--would be okay but Valet was never on time--missed a tour because of this delay. VIP is not accurate, everyone gets a free drink coupon. Nothing special for VIP members.

I only liked the area around it, it has an unique location which is close as beach as other activities. Hotel amenities ( such as beach chairs ) was way far from the hotel location. Hotel is on the 10th street and the beach chairs was at the 15th street and in the Florida sun it's nearly impossible to go back and forth twice a day, so most likely you can't use for what are you paying for. I hope this will be changed by the hotel administration.

Everything was good. The only thing I didn't like is: That the pool is outside the hotel (in another place) and it is practically impossible to swim, because where it is in the middle of a restaurant (bar) and it is always full of people. It is almost impossible to use it for your privacy (I never used it).

You get what you pay for in life and this hotel is just that, a place to lay your head down and a bathroom, the TV channels are very limited however who goes to Miami to watch TV, I was surprised that the rooms are not equipped with a refrigerator or microwave but if you ask for a refrigerator they will rent you one, it's great for the younger crowd.

Great price for the location! Right in the middle of everything happening at South Beach, would definitely recommend for the location! They say that your keys work to access the Clevelander amenities but mine never did and I had to get someone at Clevelander to let me in anytime I wanted to use the pool or rooftop bar. Not a huge deal, maybe just a fluke with my key card. Still would recommend based on price and location and would stay again!

It is the perfect location but the property had a lot wrong. Elevator was broken, ice machine was broken, stairs leading up to rooms were really dirty. Air conditioner came off and on all day and was extremely loud.

The carpet is extremely dirty!!!! The first room they put us in 322. It smelled like mowed water. It smelled horrible then they changed the room from 322 to 325 and that room had bugs on the bed underneath the mattress on the wall on the chair so we had to end up leaving the hotel and we didn’t go to bed until 7 o’clock in the morning trying to get another room. The elevator seemed like it’s going to break down any minute when you’re riding it. Please do not stay at the exes house Clevelander disgusting nasty. It needs to be torn out. How are they still in business and also wanna charge a resort fee

The property overall needs to be updated . The smell is unbearable . The cleanliness of the place is lacking . The towels are hard . The water leaks in the bathroom , the HVAC system is loud . I’m assuming they allowing people to smoke because there was a smoking aroma . There were water bugs in the tub . Dust so think in the room . Power went out.

The property is gross and needs an upgrade. The elevator is really tiny and can only fit 4 people but only 2 people with luggage. The carpet is disgusting with lots of stains and the room sheets were dirty as well with stains. The staff was friendly and the location is convenient to many places like bars and food to go to but my overall experience at the hotel was gross. And the toilet did not flush.

Moldy, smelly, nasty sink , shower toilets ...dusty, dirty rooms.

Property was in a convenient area especially if you are trying to stay around South beach. Staff was very helpful & nice although the cleanliness of the hotel could’ve been way better. I had a few stains on my sheets after the sheets were changed & the shower wasn’t very clean & had a drain issue.

The corridor carpets were very dirty and the noise from other rooms was very annoying, but the staff were kind and good.

Elevator broken . Front entrance key entry broken . Had to knock on door to get in. .room was very old with multiple coats of paint . Bathroom was dirty . Hair all over and shower curtains had multiple stains

The photos that are shown are nothing like this in person. When we first arrived and went to our room, the room was dirty; there was hair in the tub, sink, and back of the toilet. There were used press-on fingernails on the floor. I was given a second room, and it still wasn't clean to my liking. The whole place gave motel. It was to the point that I went to Walgreens and bought my own pillowcases. The beds weren't dirty, but I was freaked out and uncomfortable at that point. The carpets in the hallway were disgustingly dirty. If you're looking for luxury, this place is not it at all. The only positive aspect of it is the location. If it weren't for that, I would have canceled my reservation and booked somewhere else.

While the hotel had some updates, the overall experience left much to be desired. The room had been renovated, but the work was done poorly. The bathtub appeared to have been painted, but there were visible residues left behind. Paint drips were noticeable on the new laminate flooring, and the craftsmanship throughout the bathroom was sloppy. The grout was missing in chunks, paint was smeared on metal trim pieces, and the bathtub installation was especially rough. The toilet was difficult to flush, which added to the frustration. The air-conditioning did work well, but the room felt constantly moist and had a strong, musty odor—almost like urine. It made the stay uncomfortable despite the updated surfaces. Another concern was the elevator, which didn’t seem to function properly. The next day it was under repair, confirming my suspicion that something was wrong. It was unsettling to know that it could have been unsafe. On a positive note, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and I want to be clear that they were not the issue. Unfortunately, the condition of the room and the overall musty, outdated feel of the hotel made it hard to justify the cost. In my opinion, the value simply wasn't there.

Very outdated rooms they have no fridge, microwave or desk/dresser in the room. Tiny television that kept losing connection. My AC did not work so they generously upgraded me.

Rooms were outdated, no refrigerator, very noisy. Property need a lot of upgrades. Stairs had a really dirty carpet. Small elevator. Facility looked more like a motel than a hotel. However the Staff were wonderful. Very accommodating.

Perfect location to shops bars clubs and beach access! The walls of the rooms are pretty thin so just know you can hear everything. But very clean and fun.

I like convenience if being close to the beach and the wonderful staff. The view of the room was great however it smelled of mildew and appeared outdated. Otherwise my stay was okay for the price.

Stayed in the suite... perfect choice! Room was very spacious bathroom ++++ Essex House is in the heart of the people!! And I Could not hear any noise .. I would definitely recommend the suites

The stay definitely exceeded our expectations. The rooms while new floors are slightly dated. The beds are decent. The floors definitely need a bit more TLC cleaning due to the fake hardwood and our windows (facing Collins) were absolutely filthy on the outside. We enjoyed the location and access to the bulk of SB. If they could add mini fridges and microwaves it would make the stay even better.

Stayed here for 8 nights, perfect location in the heart of south beach right on Collins ave. Staff was super friendly and welcoming, Huge thank you to Bosea and Charline at the front desk! They were very friendly and helpful and made our graduation trip very pleasant and memorable , I highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a fair priced hotel right in the centre of all the attractions on south beach. We will be returning again soon!

The actual staff at the front desk was great, the cleaning staff sucked and didn't want to do their job. I would not book here again, however the location was great in the middle of everything but carry big luggage upstairs, no ice machines that worked, cleaning staff sucked, the rooms pics I booked because of was not the room I got and the cost of parking is horrible.

The front desk guy on Sunday 3/24 night was horrible so rude not accommodating at all. The lady and man with the locs very helpful and made up for their horrible coworker this was not my first stay here so I was shocked at how my family was treated after checking in on Sunday

Desk at the front attendant was less than helpful. I put in a call for wake up. It never came and I called down for valet. No one answered.

The front desk associate, Dimitri was outstanding! He was so helpful, patient and VERY kind. We need more young black men like him in the hospitality positions to help customers feel safe! Thank you again Dimitri from the NYC girlies!

Be very careful with staff and management. We arrived at hotel around 1230pm. Check was at 4pm. We asked if our room was ready could we check in earlier. Staff said yes, it's $50 to check in early and you could pay room with cc but we need the $50 in cash. We paid the $50 in cash and he checked us in. He took us to a room that we did not book on line. We booked a garden suite. They tried to give us a regular room claiming it's their suites. I declined that room and asked for a refund and my $50 back. Once I told him that not the room we booked, he didn't believe me. He asked if I could show him proof because expedia be advertising false pictures. I pulled up my booking then showed him. He told the manager she did so book garden suite. Manager walked us to another room and asked was this the room you booked. I said yes!! Manager stated well the room is not ready now (to my eyes the room looked like it had been cleaned already). He said I will call you when it's ready. When we finally checked in I notice the door did not close all the wa, the bathroom doors did not close for privacy. We had to prop our suitcases behind the door to keep it closed. There was no ice machine on property and there was a roach crawling in bed. We traveled 5 hours to celebrate our anniversary and was not happy with the staff trying to get extra money for themselves and not feeling safe in room and area.

My cousins and I visit South Beach about five times a year, and we always stay at the Essex. Each visit keeps getting better, and the main reason is one person: Joel, the supervisor. Joel’s customer service is truly top-tier. He goes above and beyond every single time—whether it’s recommending great local restaurants, extending my stay to make things easier, or personally checking in at my door to ensure everything is perfect. His level of care and dedication is rare, and it’s the reason I’ll never consider staying anywhere else when I’m in South Beach. Joel is not only professional, but he also makes sure every guest feels valued and appreciated—and I know this because I’ve spoken to other guests who have stayed here, and they don’t have enough good words to say about Joel either. He has been with the Essex for a long time, and it shows in the way he represents the hotel with pride and consistency. Employees like Joel are the reason people keep coming back, and I sincerely hope management recognizes the tremendous impact he has on guests like me. Thank you again, Joel, for another outstanding stay. I look forward to seeing you and your team in November!

Loved the location. Walking distance to the beach. Plenty of restaurants and nightlife within walking distance. Also loved that the hotel is older but in decent shape. Great service from the front desk. Friendly associates.

Great location and staff. One block from the heart of South Beach/Ocean Drive. Lots of places to eat. I plan to stay again.

I liked the welcome drink and you can store your bags. The hotel was very clean and staff friendly. Lots of things to do in walking distance. Beach food stores and night life

Very Disappointing Stay – Not Worth the Price! I had a terrible experience at Essex House by Clevelander. First of all, their behavior was extremely rude when I asked for a water bottle at night – the staff seemed annoyed and unhelpful. The bathroom was very dirty, and shockingly small – barely enough space to move around. The lobby and carpets throughout the hotel were unclean and smelled bad, which immediately gave a poor impression. As for breakfast, it was a joke – they only offered one coffee and one croissant, with no other options at all. Very disappointing for a place that advertises itself as a good hotel. Overall, it was not a pleasant stay, and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Definitely not worth the money.

Not much care has been taken to detail in any type of remodeling or repainting. Very obvious, patchwork and sloppy craftsmanship. Of course the building is old, but shelves installed upside down for example. You can’t beat the location, however. Minutes from the beach, tons of dining nearby. The staff was amazing and the extra touch of beverage coupons and coffee and croissant in the morning were really nice. Great water pressure in the showers. Valley parking is pricey as expected, but the process is confusing. You leave your car and keys with someone entirely before you go inside and get any kind of ticket so it feels very questionable. Not a great place for a quiet night sleep so bring your earplugs and settle in.

Front desk staff fantastic. People at attached restaurant extremely rude. Ordered coffee and asked for one regular cream, one light. Lady said” This isn’t Starbucks”. She shouldn’t be in the service business

The hotel itself is average and the food & drinks were very average, food tasted processed and not freshly made(avocado toast tasted metallic). The location is excellent and walkable to many things. Loved how close CVS was for incidentals. Grabbing an Uber was easy too.
