Abbey Sands Hotel

Lovely hotel and staff..close level walk to the seafront and theatre. Newly decorated room with comfortable bed... Tv could be better on opposite wall as it could be knockekd where its situated.. Parking can be reserved and booked for £10 which is worthwhile.

Had a great stay for four nights. The staff went above and beyond and were really friendly and helpful. The room was large and very comfortable. We were disappointed that the gym, bar, restaurant and outdoor pool were closed as those were main factors in booking the hotel. We tried the indoor pool, but it’s very run-down and the changing rooms were quite dirty, so it wasn’t the best experience. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, but it’s a shame that the hotel is so run-down and doesn’t actually deliver the amenities it promises.

The welcome was a little off at the beginning but seemed to warm as time went by. The room was clean and modern, though probably a little too cluttered with bulky furniture. The hot tub and pool are very dated, unusual and a little grubby. The gardens need some tending to. We did relax and we had a good time. It was handy for walking to the seafront and we found free parking not too far away. The heating worked well.

Great location and amazing staff. Our room was dated however it was clean and functional. Some facilities were unavailable so we used the facilities at the Grand hotel free of charge as it’s a sister hotel, worked well for us however it’s a 10 minute walk from The Abbey Sands. Overall we had a great stay and would return.

Hotel is looking a bit tired. Understand it's recently been taken over so hope it gets a facelift. Staff were excellent and breakfast was very good. Disappointed to find on arrival that there was no bar or option for an evening meal which is partly why I booked. Good for a short break as near the beach. Parking was £10 a day but did guarantee a space in your name. Rooms did have a damp smell and looked in need for a deep clean. Shower was old fashioned mixer from bath taps which meant it was either boiling hot or freezing. Bed was comfy but the room was very warm despite having all radiators off and windows open as far as possible.

The bathroom had mould round the bath, the outdoor pool in disrepair and therefore closed, restaurant was close and indoor pool so cold it made our 3 year old cry, the general upkeep of the spa area was poor and the reception guy ( no fault of his own clearly didn't have enough training as he struggled taking pay and was unsure of details. We paid alot of money for a one night stay for 3 adults and a child Nd was very disappointed.

The pool and Hot tub need renovation. Also, lockers would be useful.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. It was a shame there was no restaurant or bar at this hotel. Its not quite the same having to walk/drive to the sister hotel up the road!

We were a family of 4 on vacation and we just loved Abbey Sands. We got free parking, no problem to find parking. The room was big and spacious. The hotel is old, so a bit worn out, but it was clean and had a good atmosphere. Only thing we missed was the outdoor pool, it was not working.

We had two rooms for a family mini break. The rooms were really spacious and comfortable and spotlessly clean. The hotel is ideally situated for easy access to the beachfront, the pier also the town centre. The staff were all really helpful and friendly and we had the best time. We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend

The pool was filfy and it was all black mold spots in the shower in the changing rooms. We went uo to the sister hotel and used there pool much better. The rooms were nice though good size.

There was a collection of toe nails in the bathroom and by the bed when we checked in. These were not picked up by house keeping at all and remained throughout our 3 night stay. The bathroom also had a lot of hair/dust around particularly the edges of the floor. The bed had quite a few hairs in on arrival too which we had to pick out. The bathroom door handle was falling off so we could not shut the door. There were also a lot of dirty marks/stains on the door making you not want to touch it. House keeping woke us up VERY loudly shouting at each other down the corridors at 8:30am and tried to come in our room at this time each day (including checkout day?). We felt this was quite early for the weekend. The floorboards throughout were VERY noisy, which I realise that cannot be helped in an old building and wouldn't have been an issue, but the rooms were really not sound proof so you could hear everything. We are heavy sleepers but we were kept awake/woken every night by this and other noise, along with noisy neighbours jumping around. We did not sleep well at all during the 3 nights. Our bathroom sink was blocked and not draining on arrival, and also black bits were coming out of our tap - we reported this and it was fixed. The front doors were left unlocked at night for anyone to walk in, but no staff around. Anyone could have accessed the reception & computer. Slightly worrying, especially as they took your card details and saved on the computer at check in.

Torquay is lovely even in December and the hotel brilliant as 10 min walk along prom or through park to the Station and 3 mins walk to beach. Room spotless, one of the cleanest I have stayed in, and very comfy bed and recently refurbed very tastefully. A proper hotel with bar restaurant and pool and the feeling of space. Brekky good hot and cold options and warm plates ! Only thing i'd improve would be pots of tea and proper coffee not an urn but thats just being picky . 99% happy which is a rare for me . Brilliant

We paid £100 for one night the bar was shut the hole time swimming pool was so cold only stayed in for 20 minutes the dust in the room was about 2 months old blood dots on our sheets would not recommend

The property is in a general unkempt and delapidated state. I found the rooms smelt clean on arrival but really were not. Mould on blinds, dirty bathroom floors, stains on bed and fixtures and fittings

First room looked great, but it was very cold (evening, late December) I moved to another room which was warm, but much older fittings, carpet was very grubby and a smell purveyed (drains smell that I think came from the shower drain - guessing there's no trap so sewage pipe air is just wafting up.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and our family room was absolutely amazing. Our granddaughter was convinced we were staying in a mansion. We made use of the indoor swimming pool which was a good decent size. One thing to note for families with younger children, the depth is constant 1.40 metres everywhere with no shallow end. The hotel has car parking and we reserved a space the night before we arrived, which was then indicated with our name when we arrived. The hotel is about 5 mins walk from the beach, the Riviera centre is also very close, with a great indoor pool (with water slide, waves etc) for those days when weather is not good. There is a nice grassed garden at the rear of the hotel along with the outdoor pool (which was not in use and looks as if there might be a program of refurbishment of the external areas happening.) Would certainly come here again.

Executive room was larger than expected with sofa. Large bathroom and large comfortable bath.

Room was fantastic. Very quiet. Bed super comfortable. Great price.

Lovely large family suite with 2 rooms! Also welcomed our well behaved dog. Only issue was that our door didn’t lock from the inside. Overall really pleased with our room and the hotel itself.

We had a family room (116) and we’re very pleased with it. It had 2 bedrooms (a double and a twin), a large bathroom with both a bath and separate shower as well as a small lounge area in the twin bedroom. It suited us well as we were with teenagers. It wasn’t very far to walk to the harbour or into town, probably 5-10 minutes depending on your pace. Can’t comment on food as we didn’t eat there.

The room was of a great size but with dated furniture with wonky sofa, bed was comfortable and good size wife loved the duck feather pillows, dated luxury, was going ok until the ceiling in our bathroom collapsed in the early hours of the morning narrowly missing myself, staff were great afterwards but mentioned the room and had a leak previously, but moved rooms quickly.

Room very nice, could do with aircon as the road outside was noisy but too hot to close the windows.

Staff were exceptionally helpful, the hotel is charming, breakfast was great! Located with easy access to the waterfront, plenty of space to park, very friendly wholsesome vibe. Started the next morning off with a swim in the indoor pool, followed by an excellent breakfast. Would defintely stay here again.

I enjoyed my stay at the abbey sands hotel the room was clean and comfortable the breakfast was very good and the staff where very friendly they were very polite I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone I will definitely be staying there again in the future thank you for your hospitality and making my stay enjoyable

The bed and pillows were very comfortable, the shower worked well and the room was spacious and clean. Parking is free at the back of the hotel or £10 at the front. Swimming pool/jacuzzi was a nice extra. The hotel is very old but it has everything you need. The receptionist was working alone with no other support staff to help with customer requests and queries so service was a bit slow but she managed well and was welcoming

Can I just say how helpful and friendly the lady on reception was,we didn’t get her name but know she was Scottish. She made sure we had a suitable room as mobility was an issue and made sure all dietary requirements were sorted out before breakfast, she made check in Quick and easy, nothing was too much trouble. Thank you so much.

Customer Service non existent, too busy having arguments with each other. No help with luggage despite dtairs and knowing we couldn't use lift

The room was clean and tidy and the housekeepers made the room up each day. The breakfast in the restaurant was lovely and pool and hot tub were clean and well maintained. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay here again.

This place needs serious work. The guy on reception was probably the only positive, nice and helpful. Charging for private parking per day, the fact it was an illegal migrant hotel and the rooms are very much still set up like they’re catering for several men per room. The CEO has clearly sold his values for some income and the hotel has suffered massively as a result. Damp, neglected, a skeleton crew of one person running everything from front desk to the bar. Nobody around to check out as they’re off cleaning the rooms. Everything dated and in need of investment and refurbishing. Avoid. I do hope the staff (I think his name was Rob) finds a better place more suited to his level of customer service excellence. Seriously, for the money it’s not worth it.

Very helpful staff we were able to check in early and also leave bags so we didn’t have to carry them around when we left. Really handy for walk to the town and Princess Theatre

Nicely located to walk to the seaside or town. Friendly staff and flexible parking made it a brief but pleasant stay.

2nd time to stay at this hotel. Rooms are clean and location near to Abbey Sands sea front is great.

Absolutely brilliantly located hotel, just two minutes walk to the seafront. Car parking is a bit tight but we did manage to get parked. Room was a decent size and nicely laid out. Only slight gripe was the price of the breakfast so we instead went to the beefeater over the road which was significantly cheaper.

Hotel itself and staff were great room was clean food was good lovely pool an hot tub better then i was expecting for the price and 3 star rating! The only thing that lets this place down is its surroundings an the building itself could use some tlc its a little run down! The hotel opposite is in disrepair all windows smashe some boarded up the police had that hotel cordoned off an were outside talking all night with loud bangs an smashes keeping me awake all night an waking my daughter i get that this is not the abbey sands fault but i wont be staying again for this reason such a shame hope somethings done about the other hotel!

The hotel was basic and nice. Rooms were clean and tidy. There was no lunch/dinner or bar available which was disappointing. Had breakfast just the one morning due to it being £15 each person but it wasn’t anything special. Overall enjoyed the break away

Friendly atmosphere. Very welcoming. Limited breakfast selection. No offer of options. No choice of eggs nor any porridge. No fresh fruits. No bananas, apples nor oranges.

The hotel staff were so friendly and helpful. We only stayed for 1 night, but got to try out the free pool for a quick swim before breakast. Breakfast was all you can eat buffet which at £10 i thought was good value. Parking is a bit of a problem, but the building is Victorian era so to be expected. The room we had was in need of a bit of TLC with the decor, but the bed was soft and clean and the ensuite was modern. We will definitely consider staying here again when we're next in Devon.

We stayed in a new room (number2) and it was very good but the rest of the hotel looks tired and the breakfast was awful, much better to spend the money for breakfast by going out.

Convenient for Torquay seafront. Very spacious room, very clean. Staff attentive. A few parking spaces at front of hotel, but at £10 per night. Continental breakfast sparse, hot breakfast okay but not always sufficiently well cooked and no variations in what’s on offer, eg fried eggs every day, never scrambled or poached.

When we arrived we were treated like VIP'S. We immediately had a room upgrade and given free parking for the night. The breakfast was the best I've ever had, well presented and prepared. The swimming pool was lovely and clean and although the jacuzzi was only warm to begin with it was hot after a short swim. Thank you
