Nice little hotel, couple of small niggles. Although the parking is free, the sign on the way in says full, you then have to drive around the back and go in the exit. Another annoying factor is the hotel has no lifts and the room was a long walk up and down stairs with cases. The restaurant is also in the building next door. Other than that a nice clean and quiet hotel, would stay again.

No lift to rooms, not too much of a problem for us as only one flight of stairs. Room was very large and bed comfortable but was so hot, no air con on a very hot day which is understandable in England but the radiators were on. Biggest disappointment for us was breakfast, all self service and the cooked items looked like they had hardly seen the pan. For the price would have expected some cooked to order items.

The hotel was lovely - very comfortable and charming. However, it was very difficult to get a parking space in the hotel car park. After I got home I received a parking fine for using their car park. I am appealing this fine. They never asked me for a registration number when I checked in. Additionally I had to leave the hotel one day early and as I had already paid in advance through Hotels.com the hotel was unable to issue a refund and told me to contact Hotels.com. Then they would not cooperate with hotels.com to grant me the refund.

First time we had stayed here. Friendly and professional reception staff. Very helpful and booked a taxi for us for later that evening. Nothing was too much trouble. Long walk to bedroom. Very clean and spacious room. Comfortable bed . Plenty of room for storage. Tea and coffee facilities. Lovely bar area but had to get a drink from another area due to a private event. I stayed in two different rooms between two nights. Both were very comfy, although the second one - the single twin bed - did not have an air conditioning unit even though they did provide a fan. Reception was friendly and helpful, breakfast was good with eggs and hash browns I could eat as a vegetarian, and there were nice event spaces and a front patio as well. I was there for a friend's wedding that took place nearby and was happy this was the hotel she chose.

The Cromwell is clean and comfortable. No lift, but stairs are easy enough to negotiate. Staff are helpful and polite. More towels in the bathroom would be a good idea, and free-standing showers, because although the shower worked well in my room and was easy to operate, it can be problematic for older folk to climb into the bath to access it. Food is excellent.

I have to say I was nervous at turning up at 10.40 at night but check in was so so easy and natural. The room was great and the hotel full of history back to 1770. If you have a chance, stay here

The bathroom had not been cleaned properly - there were small hairs from someone shaving all around the sink. When I told the lady on reception she didn’t seem to care. There was a lot of noise from the corridors late at night, as well as from the room above us; resulting in a terrible nights sleep.

Stayed at the Cromwell for two nights. When I arrive there was a sign on the desk saying for assistance go to the restaurant. The hotel room it's self was lovely and a very comfortable bed. The only thing I did notice was the yellow blanket at the bottom of the bed had some stains all over it. Other than that I had a very lovely stay and definitely be back

Really lovely room. Comfy beds and pillows. Water is boiling. Lighting could be better at the bed end of the room as with all lights on it’s still dark. Room was spotless and well decorated. Breakfast was great and plentiful. Parking is free.

The single room is reasonably priced, clean and more spacious than expected. The room was unbearably hot for most of the night. However, preferable to being too cold. View of the carpark though. Not a problem if only there to sleep. Bathroom is lovely, water pressure strong.

Typical English hotel. Everything is old and used but in good condition. The bed was really great. Thin walls and a loud disturbing ventilation. Breakfast English with nothing special. Just acceptable. For this price not ok.

That said, once we were attended to, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We were told around 8 p.m. that the hotel bar would open at 11 p.m. when the night team arrived. Not a major issue, but it meant a late-night dash to Tescos opposite for a bottle of wine instead. The bedroom itself was lovey - comfortable and nicely decorated. I even liked the pillow so much I ordered one from the website! However, the room was a bit too warm, but things went downhill from there. Our view was directly onto the hotel’s extraction ducting. While the room came with a fan and we opened the window to cool down, the night-time noise from the ducts was loud and persistent, leading to a really poor night’s sleep. To top it off, the room seemed set up for just one guest, with a small double bed - not what I had booked.

Lovely large room but disappointed about the size of the small double bed. Room was also very hot in the mornings. Tea and coffee refreshments were not topped up during our stay. Apart from the above comments a lovely hotel with lots of character.

It’s a frustrating review, the hotel is lovely, the staff were on point and the attached bar and restaurant both excellent. Sadly, I had a terrible nights sleep due to the almost unbearable temperature of the room. The room was clean and well sized, as was the bathroom. We had upgraded to the executive room as the description said that it was a Queen bed, but it wasn't. It was just a double, not even king-size, and fairly uncomfortable at that. Consequently we had a pretty rubbish night's sleep.

Small room with a very small double bed. Nice room and bathroom though. We’d stayed here before and had a much bigger and nicer room with a bigger bed for no extra money last time …..so I guess it’s pot luck. We are in 105 - and didn’t get much sleep as the floorboards above us were creaking all night. I assume it was a walk way but it was not good . It’s a lovely old building so maybe we should expect it but at £104 per night, I had at least expected sleep! If we stay again I will check out the room first .

We have stayed before and each time the hotel is friendly and beautifully maintained and comfortable and the staff cannot do enough. Enjoyed out stay even though a bit of a sad time for us, scattering ashes of my mum, but the hotel made it a happy experince.

We recently stayed at The Cromwell and, aside from one very disappointing incident, our experience was largely positive. On arrival we received a complimentary room upgrade, the room was lovely, and breakfast at Rump & Wade was excellent with attentive staff. Unfortunately, on 13th December, my partner and I were spoken to in an aggressive and completely unacceptable manner by the Night Manager. When returning to the hotel, we had to pass through a crowd outside the entrance and were shouted at despite calmly explaining that we were hotel guests. The tone and language used were alarming, unprofessional, and entirely unwarranted. This behaviour was particularly disappointing given how courteous and professional all other staff members were during our stay. I have already spoken directly with the Hotel Manager regarding this incident, but felt it important to share our experience here as well.

Great location in the old town, alot of bars & eateries to choose from. Nice (small) double room, hotel was in good condition & appeared clean. Xmas guests coming back from having fun at 2.30am until 4.30am was challenging, but not the fault of the hotel just poorly educated people without consideration for others. Other gripe was only 1 set of towels in the double room, took 3 requests across 2 hours to get the additional, buffet breakfast was tepid at best, spirit burners used to keep bacon etc. warm are not good enough. This was very disappointing along with a non existent bread selection. Cheap sliced white & brown for self toasting is inadequate in our opinion.

I stay at the Cromwell whenever I am in Stevenage. The hotel is clean and comfortable. Staff are professional. The parking is very convenient and the location is close to shops and dining.

The hotel was basic. Nice and clean. The waiting staff provided more info than i received upon check in. But although they were great unfortunately they was let down by the food where everything was dry apart from the coffee. Avoid the cooked breakfast or at least the sausages, there is a good selection of most things

Check in was smooth. The room was clean and well presented. The thermostat was tricky to understand as we wanted to turn up the heating. Bed was very comfortable as far as we were concerned although the softness may not be to every ones liking. Breakfast was laid out well (buffet) and there was as much as you could eat. One thing that was dissapointing was the plates were cold which is a no no when serving up your breakfast as sometimes with a buffet you spend quite a bit of time wating for toast etc. Overall a good experience.

I stayed in two different rooms between two nights. Both were very comfy, although the second one - the single twin bed - did not have an air conditioning unit even though they did provide a fan. Reception was friendly and helpful, breakfast was good with eggs and hash browns I could eat as a vegetarian, and there were nice event spaces and a front patio as well. I was there for a friend's wedding that took place nearby and was happy this was the hotel she chose.

We recently stayed at The Cromwell and, aside from one very disappointing incident, our experience was largely positive. On arrival we received a complimentary room upgrade, the room was lovely, and breakfast at Rump & Wade was excellent with attentive staff. Unfortunately, on 13th December, my partner and I were spoken to in an aggressive and completely unacceptable manner by the Night Manager. When returning to the hotel, we had to pass through a crowd outside the entrance and were shouted at despite calmly explaining that we were hotel guests. The tone and language used were alarming, unprofessional, and entirely unwarranted. This behaviour was particularly disappointing given how courteous and professional all other staff members were during our stay. I have already spoken directly with the Hotel Manager regarding this incident, but felt it important to share our experience here as well.

Hotel and staff lovely, very clean, friendly staff, room good. Restful stay, no. We stayed from Friday to Sunday, and there is clubs right across from the hotel, the noise was horrible. No sleep until 4am both night, only to be up again at 6am for early starts. Absolutely shattered was an understatement. Such a shame as it’s a lovely place.
