Exterior of hotel was being refurbished so there was scaffolding outside window and sea view was restricted. The room was on the third floor and there was a complicated route of several stairways to get to it. Room was large and clean but bathroom needs refurbishing. Food from the breakfast buffet was tepid/cold.

Very comfortable room and everything I needed. My only issue was the squeaky floorboards in the room and doors to corridors that also squeaked. I was concerned for other residents in relation to this. Additionally, parking is an issue, whilst it is not the fault of the hotel directly (as there is free parking elsewhere, there were two additional spaces outside that weren’t available due to a skip and excess works fencing covering one space that wasn’t necessary. Overall, the stay was a pleasure.

Booked last minute for one night. Did not know about the renovation going on. Actually thought the place was shut on arriving. Full building was covered in scaffolding. Glad it wahs just one night

The location of the hotel us perfect for The Spanish City and the beach. The hotel is under renovation and it looks closed. Reception is old and outdated. The staff are nice and helpful. Rooms are ok, bedding was clean and the sea view was great. Breakfast was standard buffet. The breakfast staff are very nice. If they are also renovating the rooms, this will be a fab place. But, at the moment, its ok. Parking is approx 8 or 9 spaces at he front on a first come first served basis. We were lucky to grab a space.

Superb position, you can hear the waves crashing as you leave the hotel, with stunning views across the road. Even dived in the inviting looking North Sea, which is invigorating! Parking is limited, but is free after 6pm at a large carpark a short stroll away. Excellent cooked breakfast from 6:30 to 10am which suited my fine - really friendly staff; even asked if I needed anything for my room each day which was a lovely touch. Room in need of a bit of decorating, but was very clean and provided everything I needed including tea/coffee making facility. Very good fish and chip shop nearby but look out for the starlings - they're actually very sweet! Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Whitley Bay!

Breakfast was great no complaints on that , building is covered in scafolding outside ,and hoarding ,nothing mention on the add for the hotel ,room was very basic ,batheroom sealant all round shower and toilets needs replacing all dirty and come away from the tiles ground in dirt ,booked 3 nights ,but only stayed for one ,could not see anyone to complain to put key in box and left ,phoned for refund ,but no refund given ,wont stay there again miserable desk staff but cook was great ,very worn and outdated room ,was like going back to 70,s

Location of hotel excellent, limited parking hit lucky with a space on front of hotel. Breakfast plentiful and good. Staff friendly. Had double en suite sea facing room.....very big but not as warm as could be, quite basic for cost of room overpriced for what it is. ( Reception did bring fan heater to room to help heat it up) Better hotel than others have stayed in locality.

The staff were nice and the full English breakfast was good. The hotel is undergoing renovation - I'm sure it will be lovely when it's done but right now it's noisy with dark, very basic rooms.

Hotel is being refurbished at the front but my room at the backn was spotlessly clean with Tv and tea/coffe facilities. Breakfast in the morning starts at 6.30am which is great for those of us that are working

The hotel is excellent value for money. Walking distance for many venues. Walk-in shower was great. Yes the room needs updating, however everything was absolutely spotless. Will definitely stay again.

Upon arrival the hotel was undergoing refurbishment and it showed - the receptionist was a vacuuming the front stairs and then upon going up to my room the rest of the paint work was tired and the carpets worn- my room was at best a room with very dated pine furniture and worn carpet-the ensuite was freezing due to no heating and the shower cubicle rotten at the base and the whole room was a lack lustre mess and the mattress....well more like a bag with springs!!!

Staff were friendly. Room was basic at best, cobwebs between furniture, mattress was a joke, whole hotel was freezing and the toilets had an electric pump needed to flush. This is extra fun when neighbours up to the loo half the night and it sounds like a plane takong off. Breakfast was ok wouldnt come back, though.

Staff was very friendly, breakfast was good. There is construction both on the street and at the hotel. This turned our sea view to a view of scaffolding and the plastic wrapped around it. The beds are not comfortable and the toilet did not flush properly. Parking is VERY limited, more so when 1 vehivle takes multiple spots. Certainly renovations are needed. I wish we were alerted to the extent of construction taking place. Thankfully we were only there 1 night..

This was my third stay at The Royal. Staff are super friendly and it's over the road from a beautiful beach. Breakfast was great and my room was generally fine. My complaint is that the mattress was so soft and had a huge gap in the middle. Consequently I slept badly and woke with a sore back. I had a long drive the next day which was very frustrating.

Great location, but it's so tired and tatty inside. No sound proofing, ancient carpet, mattress and bathroom. It is being refurbished, maybe they'll actually invest some money in the facilities. The staff were really helpful, it's not their fault the owners haven't invested over the years.

Staff was nice enough, but there’s plenty that guests need to know about: the “hotel” is like a maze - so many random stairs, turns, and doors just to find your room. It’s a very strange set up. And it’s loud everywhere because the floor is unbearably creaky. The rooms are weird: creaky floors, broken headboards, tv is like 20 inch or less, bathrooms are missing towel racks, and you hear everything from other guests that are walking around trying to find their rooms. It’s a fine stay if you’re knowing what you’re really getting yourself into, but it should be quite a bit cheaper in my opinion.

We stayed in a family room over looking the sea. The view was superb. The position of the hotel was also perfect. The room was large but sparsely furnished. It could do with some updating really. A few extra touches would have been nice … perhaps a fridge… The bed was comfortable but it would have been better if it was a king size. The heater was old and difficult to change the temperature. The room was either too hot or too cold. The decor needs updating too and the shower room was cold and tired and to be fair disappointing. The breakfast was however amazing. All in all a nice stay but would have paid a bit more for a more smarter room. I think the whole hotel could be more luxurious with some easy updates.

The hotel is in a great location but could do with being updated. Also the room we had (22) was pretty noisy with people coming in/out of the door at the stairs as well as the bathroom being very noisy as other people were flushing their toilets.

This hotel is a 200 year old building and it really felt like it needed painting everywhere. We stayed in a superior twin room, the beds were not comfortable and the bathroom did not feel clean. Saying this all the staff were amazing and could not do enough for you. My mum needed extra blankets on the first night and they were brought to us straight away. The continental breakfast was really good as was the food in the restaurant.

We were welcomed nicely. Got to our room witch we paid extra for sea view on entering room there was no sea view due to windows being sheeted up with scaffold so could not see out of window and room was freezing as heating didn’t work. So they moved us to another room which was bigger and still cold and also windows covered up so could not see the sea through window. It’s quite bad when you pay extra for a sea view and don’t get a sea view.

Stayed as a solo traveller for a gig at the local theatre. Hotel has a great location on the sea front, with many restaurants close by. The town centre is only a short walk away too. My single room was quite big, clean but sparsely furnished - comfortable enough though. TV and shower were decent so couldn't complain. Staff are top notch, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was outstanding with top quality ingredients - far better than a few 4 star hotels I've been in recently.

Excellent staff at reception very helpful, Andrew at breakfast is always very cheerful and quick with coffee tea and toast, lovely breakfast and perfect location, cleaner's are excellent and very friendly,

I have stayed in this hotel many times. The staff are great and friendly. Breakfast is great. The Rooms are good; it's just the stairs that prevents a 5* (All Round) Rating. They are steep. Location wise it is perfect for me and even 4 decent Takeaways/Restaurant's within 5 minutes walk.

Although renovations are taking place the hotel was comfortable and clean (as was reasonably expected under the present circumstances). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was brilliant with pleasant staff on hand and fresh hot food available. I would definitely stay here again

Stayed as a solo traveller for a gig at the local theatre. Hotel has a great location on the sea front, with many restaurants close by. The town centre is only a short walk away too. My single room was quite big, clean but sparsely furnished - comfortable enough though. TV and shower were decent so couldn't complain. Staff are top notch, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was outstanding with top quality ingredients - far better than a few 4 star hotels I've been in recently.

Superb position, you can hear the waves crashing as you leave the hotel, with stunning views across the road. Even dived in the inviting looking North Sea, which is invigorating! Parking is limited, but is free after 6pm at a large carpark a short stroll away. Excellent cooked breakfast from 6:30 to 10am which suited my fine - really friendly staff; even asked if I needed anything for my room each day which was a lovely touch. Room in need of a bit of decorating, but was very clean and provided everything I needed including tea/coffee making facility. Very good fish and chip shop nearby but look out for the starlings - they're actually very sweet! Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Whitley Bay!

It was very clean and airy. We had a seaview which was beautiful. no problems at all, free parking, very nice breakfast. It was in a very good position and we will defo come again. The staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Location of hotel excellent, limited parking hit lucky with a space on front of hotel. Breakfast plentiful and good. Staff friendly. Had double en suite sea facing room.....very big but not as warm as could be, quite basic for cost of room overpriced for what it is. ( Reception did bring fan heater to room to help heat it up) Better hotel than others have stayed in locality.

Exterior of hotel was being refurbished so there was scaffolding outside window and sea view was restricted. The room was on the third floor and there was a complicated route of several stairways to get to it. Room was large and clean but bathroom needs refurbishing. Food from the breakfast buffet was tepid/cold.

Room was OK a bit small but OK as a single room Bathroom was alright and could get the shower to a decent temp. There is no lift and elderly people may struggle with cases. all the staff were nice. Breakfast Cereals Fruit Juice Tea or Coffee Toast Jam and Butter but the breakfast had been out too long only the Sausages were hot the rest Bacon Hash Brown Mushrooms Tomato was cold on all days. under infa red lights. I was down early and just cooked too much off too soon I know it is a pain to batch cook or to just put into microwave dishes then give them a flash in the microwave.

Great value, considering breakfast is included. Terrific selection, help yourself to bacon,sausage, black pudding, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans,hash browns and scrambled eggs. All piping hot. Tea n toast, juice, cereals in abundance. It's how b n b's used to be. Friendliest staff around. Definitely recomend 100%.

I spent one night whilst visiting a friend and the hotel was absolutely ideal. Fantastic location on the beach front. All of the staff were friendly, the room was a decent size and very clean. Bathroom was also a good size with a powerful shower and extremely clean. It's a touch on the old side and is currently being renovated but honestly for the price it exceeded all expectations. The breakfast is genuinely superb as a particular highlight.

We had a two night stay at the Royal. Lots of renovations going on which in fairness they do email to let you know. Breakfast was not the best but not the worst I have had.Our room was very dated and I imagine that’s why they are renovating. Internet and tv were down for the first day. Staff are nice and the proximity to the beach and town is very good.There are also good restaurants close by.
