George and Abbotsford

In the Centre of Melrose and budget priced, good free parking, nice bar with real ale , were the plus factors. No lift, no towel rail or anti-slip shower mat were the minus factors.

I really had a good night at the George and Abbotsford. Unfortunately, I had to leave to early to be able to have breakfast. The staff was really friendly, the parking facilities are a big plus.

The George and Abbotsford Hotel is 2-star mainly because of higgledy-piggeldy layout, too many stairs and firecdoors (because of age), lack of internet except on bar/lobby and reception (no internet in rooms). The staff (thought too few for size and complexity of hotel) were fsntastic! Food was tasty though limited in choice, and breakfast when fully occupied is a jumble. Overall good value for money, but with a little attention to detail in cleaning and maintensnce, and the addition of comprehensive internet access this hotel could be a 3-star. Best assets are the wonderful stsff like Cheryl and Eve!

This is an old coach inn and has had a few additions over the years. No elevator, and lots of stairs. This is just a comment and not a criticism. The hotel has lots of character. Room was spacious and very clean. The breakfast was delicious with lots of choices. There is an on site bar that serves equally delicious food. Good selection of beer.

Hotel looked a bit run down. External + internal paintwork needed touching up. Plenty of car parking space. New carpet in reception.The staff were very friendly, the food was good and the beer excellent! Probably the best breakfast I've had so far this year!

Property seems very tired now and I was disappointed not to see any card indicating their WiFi code when I got to my room after reception had closed. Staff I did encounter were certainly pleasant enough and breakfast was ample, reasonably priced and very tasty. Toilet in the bedroom was particularly tricky to get a flush from, which could have been quite distressing for a less well seasoned traveller...

Great value, nice hotel with character. Very pleasant staff. Good location in town centre with ample parking. Excellent choice of menu for dinner and also breakfast. On the whole, a really good place to stay in the Borders.

A very central big old hotel with nice staff. The pub had excellent food. Unfortunately there was a gang of golfer's too noisy to here the singer that preformed.

Lovely character property in the middle of town. Great selection of beers and friendly staff. Good food. Very dog friendly.

Stay was ok however tv didn’t work, bathroom was mouldy, shower was connected to bath taps so couldn’t get a comfortable heat. Breakfast was ok but bacon tasted a bit fishy? Staff were nice.

The room was dirty and dusty,windows were dirty full of cobwebs,dust on bedframe,bath was dirty as were the wetwalls cobwebs hanging off the ceiling and lights,wimdow frames falling to bits. Breakfast was tasty but slightly overcooked

Hotel generally needs a lot of updating. My room and bathroom were not particularly clean.

It’s a maze to get to your room, we opened the door to a stale smell and a room full of spiders and cobwebs. The staff were friendly and cleaned it out after but it wasn’t very pleasant. very basic room. Also they don’t offer multiple items on their drink menu which can be quite confusing. Parking was nice though.

Staff were really friendly and helpful, and I saw them go out of their way to look after elderly and disabled customers. The bed was also comfortable, there was a good cooked breakfast and the location is excellent, so I'm willing to forgive its other faults and would stay there again. There are quite a lot of other faults though that do bring it down. Firstly, the decor. Very, very dated and badly in need of upgrading. The bathroom was like something in an old person's house, probably been there since the 1980s at least, if not longer, and the bath was kind of grubby looking, but I suspect it would not be possible to get it clean now. There was a dirty cushion on the bed, which looked liked it hadn't been washed for years, and the water glass on the tea tray was sitting in a puddle of water, as if someone had just rinsed it under the tap and not bothered to dry it. Breakfast was quite chaotic. They only serve breakfast for one house (I think it was 8.00am-9.00am), so everyone in the entire hotel has to come down for breakfast at the same time, but they can't actually cope with that. When I came down there were no tables available (I had to share a table with someone I didn't know), there was no milk and no bowls for cereal. It took ages for things to be topped up, tables cleared and orders taken because there was one poor girl running round trying to do everything for all the guests in the hotel at once. Also be aware, there are lots of stairs and no lift.

The hotel has seen better days, the stairs to all the bedrooms were never hoovered during our four night stay. Housekeeping gave us fresh towels, tea and milk but did not empty the two bins or make the bed. The windows were not clean. We tried to get a drink at the bar but there was no staff to be seen, no-one at reception either so we just went to another hotel for a drink.

Not luxurious but full value for money. Single room had a decent bit of space. It was clean and had all I needed for an overnight stay. Nice hot shower and grand view of the Eildons. Reception staff were friendly and explained the process for late night hotel access very clearly. Would definitely use again.

Room 113 was a decent size with working TV. No windows, just a openable skylight windows. Blinds were jammed so I couldn't fully close them for the night. Tight shower but with really good water pressure. Spider webs hanging from the ceiling were just disappointing, but overal cleanliness was spot on. Towels were changed daily. Breakfast were not as great. We had to wait 30 minutes for our veggie breakfast and when if finally arrived it overdone and dry. Staff was very helpful.

This really is a great place. The staff is fantastic! I was in a single room at the front of the hotel. The bed wasn't great. That is really my only concern. I was over the pub (which is wonderful!) so it was a bit noisy until closing. My solution for that: join in the fun. As just an FYI. If you're sensitive to light you'll have to bring an eye mask, but again an easy fix. This room must've been above the smoking area as it did stink. I'm sure I could've moved, no doubt the wonderful staff would've accommodated me but I just didn't say anything as I was only there 2 nights. I would recommend this place and stay again.

Friendly stuff, well located, clean and room offers everything I needed. The wall were very thin, could follow every conversation guys next to me and their snorring.

Just a one night stay and there was a mixup. We had an inside room with no windows but it at least had a big skylight.

I liked the historic charm of the building but, in my opinion, there is a need for some considerable investment to make it a bit more comfortable for guests. For example, the window did not open which made by wife anxious. The sliding door would not function.

Good location right on the high street in Melrose, but the hotel is very dated and in need of redecoration. I seem to have been upgraded and had a much better room than I expected, very large with a bay window overlooking the street, so I was very pleased with my stay. Breakfast is good and freshly cooked to order.

was a nice hotel,was spoiled by the fact that there were two sash windows in the room ,one of which wouldn't open and the other would open but wouldn't stay up.had to wedge it open with a suitcase.there was no hand wash or soap in the bathroom and there was no hair dryer

The hotel was nice and the food was really good although service quite slow. However on the down side there are a couple of rooms where there is only a skylight window and unfortunately we were in one. The room was comfy and spacious but very musty due to lack of air.

The hotel was in the center of town, so very convenient. The bedroom was very small and the most uncomfortable matress that I have ever slept on

Good check in arrangements. Comfortable bed. Good size bathroom. Shower needs updating, TV too small for room. Over priced for room. Nice hotel but tired and requires some TLC.

Another stay at the G and A. My only criticism would be the need for heavier curtains in the room, as they are very thin so the room is extremely bright in the morning.

Staff very friendly and welcoming, breakfast good quality Bedroom and facilities were fantastic, bed was so comfortable good quality mattress, great nights sleep. Would definitely stay again and recommend to friends and family.

We spent a very pleasant night here. The room was a good size and both clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good, though the dining room was rather small and understaffed.

We booked this as we were doing a race at 6am the following morning which started over the road from hotel. So location was perfect. We arrived a little later than expected due to traffic but staff were very welcoming and accommodating. Food was lovely, prefect pre race meal. Rooms were comfortable and just what we needs for a good night's rest. As we missed breakfast as we had to leave, they made us a little bag up with sandwiches, crisps, water and fruit and was ready as we left. Will definitely book again and thank you to the lovely staff.

Excellent location and wonderful staff!!! Kailee, Graham, and Cheryl were just a few names of hotel staff that were absolutely above and beyond helpful and friendly! Everyone i encountered was so kind during my week long stay. I loved the food in the hotel restaurant, especially the custard! LoL I ordered extra every chance I could! I didn't try Haggis, lol, but the steak, fish, macaroni, and BLT dishes I did try. All were delicious! The hotel room was roomy for a single. Very comfy bed. No microwave or fridge though. Smallish shower, but worked great. My only pain point was structural and based on my limited mobility, I wish there was an elevator. Also I didn't realize when booking first floor meant still had to go upstairs. Many stairs to and from rooms and out of hotel or to dining room. But if no mobility issues, you will not have a problem. Beautiful hotel! And bus stop is just down a few buildings, very close. Buses super nice and quick. Very inexpensive to get to nearby attractions or just enjoy countryside! Lovely, diverse shops and museums walking nearby! Just loved this stay!

Really bad service throughout, on this our second stay here. I reserved an evening meal table and understand the staff were busy due to a wedding party, but we are all customers and deserve to treated the same. Food was not as I would have expected. Certain members of staff were polite, but others just impolite and it was obvious they were stressed due to the workload. Breakfast here is a complete shambles. As the state on arrival its between 8 and 9 but again the staff cannot cope. you queue for hot water for the tea and coffee machine which takes it seems 3 minutes a cup and when trying to get 2 cups it seems longer. When the breakfast you ordered does arrive its around 45 mins and cold, I sent mine back only for another 5 minutes wait, it actually came back colder. I just left in disgust. Save you money, there is easily better

Very accommodating, they let us it to the room early as we could be ready for attending a wedding.

The hotel is a little tired and old fashioned, and the room was basic but clean. All the staff were great. The food was good. Free car parking - useful as the road parking was limited. Melrose is a pleasant town to visit.

We have stayed here before and it has access to all the local attractions, being central in Melrose. The hotel is comfortable and, although our room was small, we were out most of the day so it served our purpose well, with a brilliant shower. The cooked breakfasts were massive and staff were very accommodating and friendly.

Most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Room was clean and fresh with a lovely full size bath. Central location in Melrose so handy for shops.

Overall I thought the hitel was a bit tired and in need of painting, both inside and out. I appreciate its main custom comes from fishermen, so it has to put up with wear and tear. I did enjoy my visit and was well looked after in the bar, where I enjoyed a Rugby World Cup match. I think breakfat may have been cooked in advance the microwaved, as many items were tough. A pity as it was a great selection on the cooked option. I did hear some others, that had been there a few nights, making the same comments.

Friendly staff, great breakfast.

Glad of the 'pack up breakfast' but sad that full breakfast it is not served before 07-30. Front bedroom with minimal curtains that just closed and beware of traffic noise if trying for an 'early night and early rise'. Food in restaurant was excellent. bedroom light switches cannot be reached from bed! Car parking adequate. bar had sufficient selection for my tastes.

Very easy, friendly, and comfortable, for travel with children. One of the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had.
