Very helpful staff. Good central location. Great breakfast and a lovely view from the terrace. My only niggle is they do not provide an iron. Neither in the room nor to borrow. So if your cloths get wrinkled its a problem. We stayed her to celebrate a significant birthday and my wife was unable to wear the outfit she had specifically brought.

Lamentablemente, hay un problema con las hormigas en las habitaciones, lo que obliga a estar atentos al usar la kitchenette.

Unfortunately this hotel is not worth the ratings. I don’t think it's fair to other hotels that really deserve 9 stars ratings. The hotel does not reflect the pictures posted, It’s extremely outdated, exterior paint is chipped through entire building. We had two rooms and both had broken outlets, peeled paint, mildew in showers and not to mention ANTS. We slept with ants crawling on us. Staff were nice, garden and the view from balcony were truly beautiful. But I would never stay there again. Also, not a single iron for the entire hotel.

Did not really enjoy our stay. AC was down as soon as we got there, although it was fixed immediately it was very weak. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and I can tell it was old as I can feel the springs in my back. Hotel doesn’t have an iron either. Room got ants as well. Breakfast was very below average The reception, however was very nice, and the room was quite spacious I just would not say it is the 9+ rating that Expedia has it as.

This hotel is beautiful! The property is well taken care of and has beautiful plants/flowers! The view of the city from the hotel is breathtaking. The staff is very nice and helpful. The only difficulty we had was figuring out how to initially get into the property since it is locked/gated.

The hotel was a delightful experience in every way. We wanted to avoid being in the historical district of Funchal which is full of crowds, noise and the multiple cruiseliners. The hotel is an comfortable 20 min walk up an easy hill and is an oasis in the city: exquisite landscaping and gardens and sublime view. Hotel is spotlessly clean and staff is extremely friendly and welcoming.

The staff were absolutely wonderful and the room was extremely clean, large, and comfortable. The breakfast was fantastic and I will absolutely stay here again for my next trip to Funchal. Was able to walk to Old Town shops and the boardwalk within 10-12 minutes and could have used the bus stops if I had needed.

So, I read previous reports that mentioned ants and I can confirm that we did experience them everyday in the room somewhere or other. Having a glass of water by the bed attracted ants, anything left on the floor seemed to attract ants and you must be careful to not leave food out in the kitchen area. However, they weren't big ants, about half the size of UK ants, and they weren't in large numbers - we put up with it. Some items of fruit at the breakfast table had ants on one occasion and the ants weren't something we had experienced in our other Madeira hotel. The room was spacious and clean, although the lighting was a bit dim. A 'get you in' basket of food is provided and there is a well-stocked mini-bar, all at cost. The view of the harbour was partially obscured from the room, but the patio area had an un-interrupted view of the town and coast. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the breakfast was reasonable for 12 EU each, consisting of some limited hot options (pancakes, omelettes, bacon and beans etc), accompanied by a small basket of fresh rolls and croissants, cheese and ham slices, jams and 2 slices of cakes and fresh fruit and fresh juice. Both the exterior and interior of the hotel were tired. As over 60's, the walk into Funchal and back was not as bad as seem to suggest (about 10 - 15mins each way). The aircon was very effective and there is also a mid-size TV in the room. Overall, the slightly tired décor and the ant issue makes this a 3*+ hotel.

Nice spacious room with lots of light and a great view. The staff were so nice and the hotel is in a great location and is walkable to many restaurants and tour options.

Very large clean rooms, a little echoey because of the wooden flooring througout the hotel. Bathroom a little dated but perfectly functional and very large comfortable bed with view over the town. Waitress served a la carte breakfast in the beautiful garden was outstanding. A very quiet area just outside the centre, 20 mins walk down to attractions like the market, cable car and Blandys - and only a 5 min (€1.5) bus ride (#31 or #34) back up the hill to the bus stop right outside. Underground on-site car park was small but easy. I'd definately stay here again.

We had a large room with a balcony and we could see the ocean and port, and also mountains.

Beautiful property with great views. Walkable into town. Note: if you stay in either of the the original “old house” rooms, the beds are a little dated and the climate control is limited. However, the terrace makes up for this drawback.

This is excellent hotel, and we loved the building and the surrounding garden. It is not in the main area of large all inclusive hotels, but in a residential part of the city which made our Madeira experience more authentic. The walk to the center is easy, but I imagine it may be not that comfortable for someone with walking difficulties. We enjoyed our climb and had bo problem with it. The hotel garden is so well kept, gardener obviously doing good job. (And Sasha dog accompanying him) The views to Funchal and the ocean are also amazing. Our room was spacious and comfortable. What was a bit disturbing was the morning noise from the kitchen and the breakfast area. It would have been better if they kept the door to the kitchen closed. But the nights were silent and we could have a good rest. What is very special at the hotel is its staff, especially Jessica and Nuno at the reception, whose tips and assistance made our stay much easier. And also Delia from the accounting team who made our Madeira adventure memorable.

Our stay here totally exceeded expectations! The grounds are gorgeous and the room was enormous compared to the other hotels we stayed at in Lisbon and Porto. The staff were incredibly sweet and accommodating. The kitchenette in the room was such a welcome surprise. We were able to cook a nice dinner one evening that we enjoyed on the patio overlooking downtown Funchal. Definitely hit the breakfast for 12 euros at least once. It was charming and delicious.

I stayed one week at the Arts In Hotel Conde Carvalhal and it was an amazing stay. The highlight of our stay were the staff. Nuno was working at reception most days and he was a delight to speak to. He is very knowledgeable about the island and its history. We learned a lot and were able to plan our itinerary based on the information he shared. He also helped accommodate parking for our large rental car. Manuela who also worked at reception was sweet as well and made our early checkout a breeze. We did breakfast 2 days and the food and service was great! The banana pancakes/ waffles and pastry of the day were delicious! Every staff member had a nice smile and were genuine in making sure we felt welcome. Location is also great. There are many dinner options about 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel. Most of Funchal was walkable from the hotel. There is a bus stop available across the street as well. Would definitely stay here again the next time I visit Madeira.

Todo excelente, buena ubicación, en una zona tranquila a unos 10-15 minutos caminando del centro, hay parada de autobús frente al hotel. Muy bueno el desayuno, habitación y baño muy limpios, amplios y cómodos. Todo el personal muy amable, en especial Nuno muy paciente y atento. Muchas gracias!

This is a stunning property with a very homey feel. Every detail and service made it a very comfortable stay. All the staff are so kind and friendly, always greeting with a smiling face. Front desk Nono was incredibly knowledgeable and went out of his way to provide extra information and even keep me informed on weather details for my planned hikes! Highly recommend a stay here, I will surely be back !

I made a booking for a deluxe room with double bed, and instead we got a normal room. They did not want to return the price difference, even they admitted their fault.

We booked a deluxe room, and we got a normal room. The staff was aware of the mistake, but refused to refund the difference. They said I had to address the management. The management finally did not do anything. And that happened at that place two times!

The property was great, the grounds were really nice and the breakfast was good! There's a bus stop right outside the front door (though the road there can be a bit sketchy if waiting for the bus to go into town, as there isn't much in the way of a sidewalk on that side of the street, though there's a little area you can stand by the hotel entrance). The hotel staff were great. Very friendly and helpful. In particular, Nuno was very helpful. We wanted to rent a car for a day, and he took care of it all, organizing with a local company, had the car delivered to the hotel, and we were able to drop the car back off with the hotel along with the keys to get picked up by the rental company. He also gave us lots of recommendations for local restaurants and the like, and we had a couple really interesting conversations on world history. Overall we had a great stay, would definitely recommend :)

Everything was great. My room was clean and quite big. Bed was very comfortable. Service was excellent. They acoomodated me for a really late check in as my plane got delayed. Breakfast was really good and the grounds around the hotel were a beautiful garden.

This was a wonderful discovery. The hotel organised a taxi from the airport who dropped us off at the underground car park of the hotel, and left us somewhat bewildered in the lift. Our concerns were soon alleviated when we checked in. The staff and the rooms were fabulous. We had breakfast on the terrace every day overlooking Madeira. It couldn’t have been better. If you’re on foot, be aware that it is quite a climb back to the hotel after an evening meal in Madeira. But it is well worth it! Lovely gardens and a quiet ambience made it a very restful holiday.

Was a bit challenging to walk to from downtown, being it was up steep hills. Other that that was great.

Great location, easy walking to core Funchal.

The hotel is situated on a hillside in a peaceful area near Funchal's old town, offering stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains. While the property has not been recently updated, the facilities are clean and comfortable. The staff is exceptionally friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests. The breakfast is good, although it was not included in the room price. The old town is less than a kilometer away, but be prepared for a steep hill. The city center is also conveniently located about a kilometer away. The area offers plenty of enjoyable activities, such as the cable car ride, the botanical garden, and the unique experience of riding traditional wooden sledges.

The hotel was beautiful and the staff lovely and helpful. The only slight drawback is that it's rather far from any restaurants/shops/attractions - an arduous 30min walk up and down the hill. On the other hand, it meant it was quiet, and the views of the harbour fabulous

Beautiful property located in a great area walking distance to many shops and restaurants. We booked the Premier Suite which was lovely and spacious with a beautiful balcony overlooking Funchal. The staff were wonderful and the breakfast each morning was delicious. The grounds of the hotel are also lovely. Would definitely stay here again.

Positiv: Sehr schön angelegter Garten; der Blick von der Terrasse des Zimmers über die Stadt bis zum Meer einfach grandios; ausgesprochen große Auswahl an Snacks, die über die Minibar abgerechnet werden; Servicemitarbeiter sehr freundlich und bemüht. Negativ: Matratze durchgelegen; Frühstücksqualität sehr mäßig: wässrig verdünnte Fruchtsäfte, Backwaren jenseits von knusprig, dünner Kaffee. Der Anbau bedarf dringend eines Anstrichs, wirkt äußerlich fast schon gammelig.
