HI New York City Hostel

Everything clean and well organized, they encourage the socializing of the guests and offer a lot of activities to do with them for free, besides a cafeteria with various options, vending machines, laundry and shared kitchen. Got the shared room and everyone was polite. The only con is the only one elevator for all the building, can took a while.

Great traditional large nyc hostel with great amenities available, including cafe on ground floor, table tennis, billiards, patio seating, hangout areas all over, inside and outside, affordable old-school locker luggage storage, etc. Also very understanding as far as travel plans not usually lining up exactly with check in/out requirements. they do what they can to help and have seen it all before lol

Slowest elevator in history but otherwise ok.

This is a good hostel, with the 8-share room having everything needed - individual padlockable cupboard, power and light at the bed, solid bunk construction and a privacy curtain. On-site café was a good feature and the guest kitchen looked clean and well-equipped. On the lower side, there was just a single TV in the common area (not enough for such a big hostel) and just a single desktop computer for paid use. The lowest mark is given to the slow elevator that is shared with the service staff and their big linen carts. Location was really good - close to transport, shops, food, but not in the part of NYC that doesn’t sleep.

The HI NYC hostel is a safe environment. It has a convenient food station (sandwiches, coffee, muffins, etc.), nice facilities for eating and lounging. Even though the rooms have some kind of air filtration system, some of the rooms can get a bit stuffy which I attribute to the people using the room (dirty clothes/shoes that smell, etc.). This is not really the fault of the hostel. The bathrooms are clean. I have stayed here several times and have never encountered any issues with safety. It feels like a dorm or college environment. I recommend to anyone who does not mind sleeping in the same room with strangers or who only needs a simple place to sleep for a night or two.

Very hip and spacious..large kitchen areas..game room and theatre room. Great staff. One block to subway.💝

Wonderful stay. Can easily access the subway with a short walk. Only a few blocks from Central Park. Rooms were clean and quiet. Bed was comfortable. Lockers were big enough to fit my luggage. Never had to wait for an open shower, bathrooms were clean. Snack bar had very reasonable and delicious food/coffee/pastries. Public kitchen was clean with lots of cooking utensils. The refrigerators were actually the only complaint. They were dirty, overpacked and had an odor to them. Commons areas were always welcoming, outdoor patio was also very nice. Would definitely stay here again!!

The elevator was broken and going up and down 3 floors and also needing to do it with luggage wasn't a pleasing experience, but overall the hostel has a great atmosphere. They have a cafeteria inside that has a fair price during the day but gets pricy during the night

Very good hostel experience. Property offered a lot of open spaces for meeting and doing activities. Also offered a range of NYC experiences you could sign up for, and reasonably priced cafe for breakfast/lunch items. Was a bit of a backup in the bathrooms for sink space at times, but in a shared space you just have to plan for that in advance.

Clean bed and bedroom. Your roommates, well, it's a gamble really. My experience with the bathroom was great. Super clean! Yes, it is shared. But, felt as same as being in my gym. Nothing new, sharing a bathroom. Super happy that I can visit Manhattan on a budget again.

My sheets were very dirty and when told the staff took hours to change them and I could not sleep because of this. It was hot and the place smelled weird

I feel like the property could use some slight renovation and deep cleaning especially in bathroom area. Saw some mold in the showers. It is New York so spaces can get messy quickly but i wish they would do a more thorough cleaning of the bedroom floors. The washer also ended up leaving stains on my clothes. I have stayed here before and that did not happen last time so maybe it’s due to a previous user of that washer. But if the washers could be cleaned more frequently that would also be great. Overall the staff’s super nice and was very helpful with my payment as I didn’t have the physical card or Apple Pay.

The location is good and easy access to the subway. However, it is not very clean. I asked them twice to change my sheets but they forgot it and they did not change it at the end. The kitchen smells awful. The washrooms and showers were not clean. The air conditioner did not work well.

The hostel had an excellent staff that were attentive and helpful. Rooms were cleanly, linens were neat, and shared spaces were well maintained with frequent restroom cleaning. Food on site was fairly priced and of good quality. Check in/out was very easy. Surrounding city area was a little dirty, to no fault of the hostel, and the property itself was very clean. Lots of food options in the area for takeout and smaller dine-in locations. Close to the subway entrance and multiple bus stops for easy public transit.

Clean, well maintained, close to public transport and amenities like restaurants. Beds had curtains, plug ins and reading lights. Loved having the option of renting a locker to keep luggage safe after checking out. Would recommend.

Very noisy people and dirty washrooms

I was overall very happy with the hostel stay I had. I liked the hostel itself, including the big general bathrooms per floor, activities that you can join organized by the hostel, the cafe available downstairs, the water bottle filling machines, the curtain covers for each bed and large lockers and space in my room. And most importantly I felt very safe here. My only things that I think was not so positive was that my room had a funny smell to it (but that could have been something to do with one of the other girls staying in the room) but was a little stuffy. One of the showers in the one bathroom also had no hot water, though I just moved over to another shower and it was fine. Overall the front desk person was great and friendly, place was clean and had a nice vibe to it. I will definitely go there again and recommend to others.

Surprisingly wonderful! Very clean and quiet. Stayed in an 8 bed dorm. Everyone was respectful of each other. Bed was comfortable with a privacy curtain, charger and light. Lockers were available to store luggage and/or valuables. Lots of food options from low to high end in immediate vicinity. Close to subway stations and easily accessible to mid/downtown neighborhoods. I would absolutely recommend this to those traveling on a budget.

Cost was good. But air conditioner was broken. Elevators was slow and we could not see bottom lamp. Considering cost, I could be patient.

The elevators are too low. The rest is great. Our room didnt a real a/c it had a handy small a/c Other wise a great place !!!! Prices are crazy high since its nyc....

Either this is a particularly nice hostel, or hostels have changed a lot in 25 years (which is the last time I stayed at a hostel, but I couldn’t find a hotel room for less than three times the cost of the bunk. I was in an upper bunk. At first this dismayed me, because climbing ladder, but the room has a high ceiling and I think I would feel a bit claustrophobic in a lower bunk. I didn’t specify a preference when I booked. The bunks all have privacy curtains, and my (very large) locker is right next to my bed. It holds both my bags easily and could probably fit two more. I’m glad I read the reviews and saw that locks are not provided, so I knew to bring one. Also there’s a little railing, so I don’t roll off the bunk and kill myself. Very thoughtful. And there is a little shelf above my head with two grounded international outlets and two USB ports. And a light that is way too bright. You have to push the little red button next to the USB ports to make them work. The hostel was clean and well-organized, lots of common space, which is good because you won’t want to hang out in your room. good wifi. There’s a Café open 6am to 11pm with pastries, sandwiches, snacks and coffee for purchase. There were laundry facilities that I did not take advantage of. I wasn’t the only GenX-er there, but most of the people staying there seemed about 20-25 years younger than me. But, it’s a hostel. I shared a room with 8 strangers. Not my favorite sitch.

It's either very cold in the lobby AC makes you sick. And in the dorms it is too warm and not possible to open a window. The air is unhealthy.

I was hesitant at first, this being my first experience staying at a hostal. After the first night, I decided to extend for the complete duration of my trip. Showers aren't super spacious, but they do their job and facilities seem to be kept up and cleaned well. They apparently have two kitchens, which one was under renovation. I budgeted for eating out, so I didn't use it, yet I saw plenty of people using it comfortably. There seems to be an area for all you need: a cafeteria like seating area with high chairs, a lounge if you need to do some reading or work, and the charmig patio seems to be where everyone wants to hang out and get together. Your own bed has your own light, charging stations, and a curtain for privacy. So it was still comfortable to do whatever you need if everybody else is asleep and you don't want to be a bother. Privacy is a luxury, but I quickly decided I didn't need it that much when you compare the prices to a and actual, reliable hotel.

Bedroom was warm. There was no ac? However the hallways did have Ac? Some Ac? Good ac! I enjoyed the expansive, updated, well managed property. It is a friendly accommodating place excellent for travel. Personal Highlights; Outdoor seating Space, Full Borderline commercial kitchen with refrigerators for short term food storage. Theater room, med to long term lockers, game room, healthy bookshelf, laundry on 2nd floor *tap to pay*, good bathroom setting, good shower pressure, comfy bunks with a phone/device charging USB at head height. Locker space in bedroom (bring or rent a lock) This hostel is great because of the multi-post event and local activity board to keep you out and about if you choose to experience new NouNs (persons, places, or things) And lastly my favorite was the cafe inside of the hostel. Aka the pleasant breakfast smell factory. Equipped with hot breakfast fare, coffee, and delightful baked goods. Offered at lower than New York City prices. How nice. All included within a budget friendly price point for a nights stay.

A nice area, the bunk beds were abit tight and rooms were abit warm at night during summer heat wave...but friendly and helpful.

Good value, even better location! So close to the metro stop. The hostel was very clean and amenities were great. I only got to stay one night, but if I made a trip to NYC again I would definitely stay here! It’s no knock on the hostel, but there were some super loud and rude guests who were up until 3 out on the patio and my room just happened to be right above it. I brought it to the attention of the staff, but they only quieted down for a little bit and went on being loud again. Yes, it’s a hostel and it’s affordable accommodations, but people seriously need to learn some basic etiquette. It’s not like they rented out the whole property.

The front desk staff at HI-NYC is on 24/7 and is extremely helpful. I was able to switch my pre-booked reservation from a dormitory room to an available private room with no issues. The hostel is a short walk from the 1 subway station. My room was clean and spacious. Just note the building has an older elevator so give yourself extra time when checking out.

This hostel is a great option for while you are traveling NYC, for many of its facilities, but here are a few things to consider after my experience. Although check in time is stated as 3pm, upon arriving at around 4pm I was unable to check in due to no rooms being available at that time and the front desk being unable to get in contact with housekeeping. I waited an hour for a room to be ready and available for me to check in, after a long travel day and where I was only offered to have my luggage stored for the mean time. Booking through the Expedia app, the property details state Breakfast is served daily - this is not true, no breakfast is available, this misinformation NEEDS to be updated. There is a cafe with food available for purchase. If this is something you take into consideration while booking, it is important to know, as I did not until I asked when checking in at the property. Note also the location is slightly further away from many popular tourist destination spots, but there is a subway station close by which was easy to navigate.

Staff was amazing. Checking in/out was extremely easy. Facilities were really high quality, especially for the price, really close to subway stations and also central park, good area with a variety of things to do and eat. Will stay again.

Thirty patrons were watching the Academy Awards Mar 2/2025 on the HI New York large screen tv. This was an important once a year show and we wanted to watch the awards and not a comedy show which railroaded its way in and rudely shut off the tv feed. We told the comedy group we weren’t interested in comedy since we were there to watch the Academy Awards and wanted the comedy group to go away. We even went to the front desk to complain,who refused to let us continue to watch the OSCARS. This was handled very poorly and caused a lot of anger.

I visited there again. The staff was very unkind. It was so disappointing to me.

i booked highest price for 86 dollars, but other people were only around 50-60 dollars a night , I asked for the price adjustment, but they were refusing me, and very rude to me, the lobby staff are not nice and helpful, if they need to have a good business, please training them!

Staff was friendly and helpful, it was comfortable and clean. Slept well. Also bathrooms were good, just missed out the soap because they were empty.

I stayed for just one day and really enjoyed myself. The room, bathroom, and common areas were very clean, and the staff was courteous throughout my visit. The hostel’s location is excellent—just one block from Broadway, about a 10-minute walk to Central Park, and close to the subway. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants within walking distance, which made exploring the neighborhood easy and fun. I also joined one of their weekly events, which was a great way to meet new friends and make memories, even though the venue was a bit farther away. There was some construction inside the hostel, but it didn’t interfere with my stay at all. I didn’t use the kitchen, but overall, I highly recommend this hostel for anyone looking for a clean, friendly, and well-situated place to stay in uptown New York.

It was in a good location. Easy access to subway trains and bus. Area feels safe.

8/10 for hostel, 9/10 for neighborhood, area is nice especially for taking night stroll, lots of restaurants with outside patios, lots of young families walking, felt safe

It's perfect for folks traveling who want easy access to those touristy spots (Times Sq, Chambers St, Broadway, etc.) without having to stay in it. It's an easy 10-15 minute subway ride to almost everything, and less than a two minute walk to the subway. Also a nice walkable distance to the upper-west side of Central Park.

I stayed here for 2 nights and had a pleasant stay. I felt safe as a solo female traveller and the other girls were nice ! Great location, 1 subway away from downtown and lots of food/bar options around. It’s quite safe but don’t forget to bring your own padlock as they don’t provide any. Ps: if you’re a light sleeper you might wanna bring some sleep ear plugs as there can be some noise from the pople who stay outside till late ! It’s nothing crazy tho

Location was near Central Park so easy to go for a run in the morning. However, I wouldn’t walk around the area at night, it seemed not so safe. Also standard hostel with its pros and cons.

Almost all hostels I have used internationally provide a breakfast as part of the daily cost, and I was genuinely surprised that this facility didn't - and the prices for food that is available are too high. As a consequence I had to patronise other local businesses who DO provide a range of food at reasonable cost.

Before booked I read some comments that said is dirty and the staff is rude or whatever. Nothing like that. The place is nice: clean, the staff is good as well. They have a cafeteria with variety of drinks including orange juice, coffee and a selection for breakfast (fruit, eggs, croissants, baggies etc). The WiFi is very good. The rooms are good as well. The only thing I didn’t like is the elevator it take so long to get from one floor to the other and the locker at the room are not big enough for big luggage (if you have one) but out of that for the price and location is good.

One of the best hostels in the country! Traveling on a very tight budget in NYC and needed place to lay my head at night. This hostel is FANTASTIC. It’s cleaner with more amenities than some of the cheaper hotels. Plus it’s close to the heart of NYC and lots of transportation accessibility. If you don’t mind sharing a room with people, this is a great place to stay. Great little coffee shop and restaurant in lobby too. I’d rather stay here and be close to everything than spend more than double on a dingy motel outside the city.
