Hotel California

Great location. Check-in is on the first floor. No iron in the room. Parking is a challenge. You have to use puplic parking and walk to the hotel..not convenient.

Not the best stay, overall. The key system is cumbersome, there was no air conditioning for a stuffy room. Noisy on account of construction outside. Not enough towels.

Hotel is a bit dated & only one key per room. Room was big and clean but the sofa bed for third person was hard as a rock. Staff aren’t always around so you have to call them. They are attentive. Hotel is conveniently located.

Great central location. Clean, updated room. We were only there 1 night. Restaurant was busy so we were unable to dine there. Checked out before the breakfast. Parking was up around the corner...5 minute walk. We were able to park along the street in front of the hotel for unloading, which was nice. If we find ourselves in Zurich again, we will certainly consider staying at Hotel California.

The hotel is ok if your expectations aren't high, which means I wouldn't rule out staying there as it is well located However it has some quirkiness which may not appeal to everyone The reception is on the first floor and at first sight it seems that you need to walk up a flight of stairs to reach it. Fortunately, a staff member noticed our hesitation before we started carrying our suitcases up and told us to enter the adjacent Papa John's restaurant and use the elevator there. The elevator and the restaurant in act one will return in act two... We reserved the bigger room so had no problem with the spacious room (I read some reviews which complained about the room size) The hotel has a strange system of different keys to access the elevator and the room which means you always have to go through reception to change keys. It is important to remember because the elevator key also has the chip with which you can enter the hotel after 10pm (there's a 150 CHF fine if you forget to take it and need to call someone to let you in...) The breakfast is served at Papa John's... when we came down for it the place was deserted and only after a while a staff member came down to ask if we wanted some eggs. The breakfast buffet can be a serious contender for the Guinness Book of Records for the smallest buffet... If the above don't bother you, I wouldn't rule out staying there

Hotel California was a nice hotel, lovely room, great bed though it would be nice to have more than one pillow per person. Great location in the old town and very walkable to everything. The staff was very friendly and very helpful but the only drawback is that if you have a car and need to load or unload your luggage, there is some controversy over how long you can stay. We were told if we gave them our license number they would get a special permit for us to remain there for up to 1/2 hour, but the receptionist in the morning didn\'t know anything about this and it took several employees to put their heads together to do this. Meanwhile, a delivery person was very angry that we were parked in "his space" even though it was long after deliveries were supposed to arrive. Other than that, our stay was wonderful, the breakfasts were good and plentiful and again, the staff was really nice and really made an effort to help us. Speaking English was a challenge for some of the staff but they spoke much better english than I spoke German. Zurich is wunderbar!

The room was a good size with a decent bathroom and good facilities. The key system was easy to understand and the property was easy to access. The location is great and quite central, with lots of nice food options and things to see nearby, as well as a tram stop close by to get to destinations further away. Whilst it didn’t ruin the experience, we could hear quite a lot of noise whilst in our room, both from outside the building and from the rooms next to us and the hallway. That was the only downside to an otherwise very pleasant experience, and the location made up for it.

Hotel was cute but very small. Couldn't access the elevator except through the restaurant and that was not obvious at first

Hotel California was pretty much as advertised. It was a nice room in the downtown area. The service was good and the room was clean. We did have to park a few blocks away but that was expected. It was a little difficult to find the hotel initially while driving but that's not the fault of the hotel. It was not a free breakfast so we went to the Starbucks less than a block away.

Rooms are recently renovated and very clean. Staff was extremely friendly. Location was very convenient.

Four of us stayed two nights and room never got serviced. Depleted towels supply and beds did not get made. When asked about it said they tried but we were napping in the room. Well, leave a note saying you tried and ask us when you can come back? "Fridge" was turned off and we were told it could not be used for cold storage.

The property is boutique style. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. The bed was comfortable. There were some hairs in the towels and the shower on the 4th floor has a arch ceiling which isnt fitting for a tall person. The biggest issue is the lack of air-conditioning. The reservation requested exyra charge for a drink upon arrival and breakfast. There was no drink upon arrival and I would recommend just going to get breakfast out in town. Without air conditioning, I wouldn't choose this property again. However, if that issue was corrected, I would choose it and do it without the addition of breakfast.

Husband and I stayed here five nights recently. We were very pleased with the location in old town, and easy access to transportation and the Christmas markets. The room was very clean and comfortable. We booked the superior room, which had more space than the standard room. We prepurchased the breakfast and found that to be a good decision, with a buffet spread, delicious coffee, and also eggs and bacon. I am gluten free and each morning they brought me a basket of fresh gluten free bread, much appreciated. The only thing that I would suggest is to not be on the second floor. While that location was super convenient, it is above the restaurant/bar. In the morning I (who am a light sleeper) could hear chairs being moved around. Nobody was intentionally being loud, they were just doing their job preparing for the day. Other than that, the staff was very kind and accomodating. Highly recommend Hotel California!

For one night stay it was just ok. Bedding not so good, it was dirty, with hairs, no slippers, towels were not in a good condition. So, never back again.

Great hotel located in a very centric area, the room was very cleanand modern. Staff was polite and helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Zurich.

The beds are a little hard for my taste and the pillows completely flat. No AC, but there was a fan which died by the final day. Rooms were clean, but the cleaning staff left the damp/dirty towels from all the rooms that had been cleaned on the stairs between the floors. They were there for 2 days. It was okay for what it is.

The location is ok but the rooms are really small for a family. Restaurant is good but no AC and small room makes it VERY uncomfortable.

It’s very hot in the hotel room, uncomfortable, It’s very hard to sleep in the rooms despite the fans and the open windows. The fridge isn’t working, and the toilet was gurgling all night. It’s one of the most uncomfortable hotel I’ve ever stayed at.

At first appearance it looked like a very basic hotel but the room was very nice, newly renovated. We had a very comfortable stay for 3 nights.

The reception person was not welcoming almost rude. Seemed angry. Great location

Enjoyed the property but they charged me a second time for the stay (Expedia had already collected payment even though Expedia said that the hotel should collect) and the hotel refunded the amount they collected but the refund didn’t equal the amount withdrawn due to currency valuations. Bad Expedia for not doing what they said they were going to do. Bad hotel for not making the transaction equal.

We arrived 20 min early and was told to wait 30 min before we could check in. The young lady didn’t even check my name. 20 min later I asked a young man and he picked up the paperwork that had been sitting on the desk all along. Not a great start. Room was very small but clean. No A/C so I wouldn’t stay during the summer for sure! Location is really great - walking distance to lots of cool stuff. Overall: great location, very small, expensive

Hotel California was pretty much as advertised. It was a nice room in the downtown area. The service was good and the room was clean. We did have to park a few blocks away but that was expected. It was a little difficult to find the hotel initially while driving but that's not the fault of the hotel. It was not a free breakfast so we went to the Starbucks less than a block away.

Staff was very friendly and eager to help out. It is a nice area with lots of restaurants and close to the river.

Very accommodating when we arrived late. Helpful staff. The restaurant below, Papa Joes, were also friendly and took pity on us when we arrived as the kitchen was closing. Good location but worth a ride from the station. Trams go close.

The location in Altstadt Zurich is wonderful…close to everything. And the hotel is fun… not fancy … more than adequate … exactly as expected … and the price was good for this area. Thank you!

Good stay in Zürich. We picked this hotel based on it's location around the city, and for our limited stay. There is plenty of restaurants and shopping around the immediate area. The room was good and clean, and staff was friendly. The breakfast was in the restaurant in the morning and was okay, but the noise from the restaurant/bar at night was a little distracting. Overall good stay

The place was located in great area. Easy for shopping, food and walking. Staff was helpful and friendly. The day we arrived was raining and we were not prepared. Restaurant is located below the hotel. Definitely would recommend to stay there.

The hotel was quirky, which we expected. Rooms were clean and staff were helpful. The hotel was situated close to lots of dining and shopping and everything was walkable. Breakfast could have been better but otherwise everything was great.
