Excellent hotel, pet friendly, valet was included with my stay. Breakfast was included as well. Walking distance to food options and close to the beaches. Would stay again.

Excellent choice for our girls weekend to La Jolla. Walkable to shopping, seals and super good food and drink. And bonus having the Manhattan restaurant on site with live music every night!

The hotel was within walking distance of the famous and popular Prospect Street. The location is excellent, and the room on the top floor has a nice view. Very comfortable and clean. Breakfast was ok, not my favorite, but there are many choices in downtown with a La Jolla vibe. They offered beach umbrellas and chairs upon request for use at the beach. The staff was very friendly and professional. Although the hotel does not have its parking, parking is available across the street for $25, which is complimentary for hotel guests. We only stayed one night and I recommend it.

Nice hotel, good location - only a short walk to the ocean front. Breakfast buffet was good. I would give a 4 or 5 except for the poor parking arrangement. It is very difficult to get the parking booked through the hotel. We had to try multiple credit cards before it worked and a lot of time was wasted. Then when we wanted to leave on a Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m., we could not enter the parking structure. The key card would not work, and both entrances were locked. So we decided to try the driveway and thankfully, the gate was not closed. Although pedestrians are not supposed to walk in the road way, it was the only way to get to the car.

Great staff. Room was really run down and needs updating. Restaurant downstairs is great and has great food . Great area. Parking expensive . They add on a resort fee and I have nooo idea why. They said it was for the breakfast — that we were never told even existed No pool. Beach is 10 minute walk.

No ocean view from our room, it was only on the 2nd floor and faced north. Breakfast was good and fresh. Room was clean. Bathroom could use a bit more privacy, as the door has slats. Parking is a problem, as you should get the QR code before you arrive and park in the structure across the street before checking in. TV has a sensor for the remote that can easily fall behind the dresser during cleaning, thus making the TV inoperable until you relocate the sensor. Location is great for the surrounding area and the price was decent considering we only stayed for a single Saturday night.

The Empress is a very charming modern hotel with lovely amenities. It has an old world charm, including a great Italian restaurant, The Manhatten.

Bed was comfortable, bathroom average, no balcony or view and no swimming pool or hot tub. Great location to shops. Coffee and microwave awkward placement.Friendly staff.

The room was decent, room 407. The room definitely needed some attention to detail. The ceiling in the bathroom had water damage around the fan. The fan vents were covered with lint which hadn't been cleaned for quite a while. More attention needs to be paid to the windows. It would have been nice to be able to open the window to get the ocean breeze however, the cleanliness has been neglected inside and out. The windows were dirty along with windowsills which had cobwebs inside and out. It would be nice to have a solid bathroom door instead of one that had a louvers from top to bottom. Not a lot of privacy since the bathroom was right next to the bed. Spacious room otherwise.

Our room smelt like mildew/mold from the air conditioner that was condensing into the ceiling tile. I do like that they allow dogs but I don’t think I would stay here again. Good location.

The staff are wonderful - they went above and beyond and were always so happy to help! The rooms are clean and comfortable and the location is in the middle of everything!

Staff were very helpful, the hotel was clean, and the room was great! I read about other hotels in the are being very outdated. Our room felt new and modern. They had bathrobes for us, the bed was comfy, and the bathroom shower was great. We received complimentary late check out of 12pm. This was truly appreciated since we were out late for a wedding and my husband had some work he needed to do before we left. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality and value of our stay here.

The staff at the hotel were very nice so I gave 5 stars for the. However, our sheets were not clean and the sink backed up. They comped some parking and resort fees ($125) It was gross and upsetting as we didn’t realize until we got up in the morning after sleeping on them. Totally unacceptable!!I will try and post photos.

I highly suggest upgrading TBs Smart TVs are so cheap nowadays For $300 ( one night stay free ) they can purchase a 50 inch smart TV Your TVs are spooo outdated

The bed is so soft and uncomfortable. It gave me a backache

The great things about the hotel, it is right next to all the shopping and very close to La Jolla Beach. Bed is very comfortable and you don’t hear any noise from outside your room. The bad has to do with their bathroom inside the room. The door is not solid so any noise while someone is making in the bathroom the people in the room will hear it very easily. The worst thing is probably the shower, the water is very weak and honestly I felt like I was taking a shower in a 3rd world country that has a limited supply of water. I’m not sure if this Is a California problem or what but I don’t ever remember taking a shower in a hotel in any other state with such low pressure coming out of the shower head. When I did mention and complain to the front desk they did come and change the shower head but honestly I don’t think it made a huge difference. We did not look forward to taking a shower for this specific reason and that’s not a good thing.

Drains smell like rotten eggs and toilet smells like sewage. Other than that great hotel for the cost.

Front desk gave me a key to room 505. I walked into the room and the bedroom comforter was on the ground and the entire room was in disarray. So front desk came up and brought me a key for room 502, that room was hot and a/c was not working. I called front desk to tell them and they said they would get a maintenance guy to look at the a/c. So my friend and I go out to dinner hoping the a/c will be fixed by the time we return. Well, the fix was two floor fans. I again called front desk and told them about the situation not being fixed. So again, I have to grab my items and move to another room on the first floor, this room had a great a/c, but came with a handicap shower.

Dated property that can use a refresh.

I would have given the property 5 stars except for one really important problem. Our room was next to the restaurant kitchen and a party room. It was so loud both nights until about 10:30. It sounded like they were banging pots and pans and throwing furniture. An outside metal gate would constantly clang as the employees went in and out. The lid of the dumpster was constantly banging. You could hear parked cars of the employees coming and going and even alarms going off. The noises of people laughing loudly was certainly not relaxing. I finally called the front desk and they were obviously aware of the problem. I’m guessing it wasn’t their first complaint. The room should not be rented.

Loved our stay. Rooms were remodeled and so nice. Great location, everything was walkable.

Overall, this is a nice hotel in a perfect location. There were a couple policy issues we disagreed with: We arrived in La Jolla early in the morning and certainly didn't expect our room to be ready. However, we were told that if it was ready early and we wanted it at 1 pm, we would be charged $40 for early check in. If we wanted it an hour early at 2 pm, we would be charged $20. I could understand if they were pulling a room to finish cleaning early on our demand, but these charges make no sense if the room is already ready. We have never experienced a charge like this before. If our room is ready, we can enter it, regardless of what time of day. (The front desk person did wave the $20 fee and allowed us into our room at 2:15) Similarly, they are about to institute a $40/day resort fee. They give a list of benefits to justify this charge: Modern rooms, wifi, fitness center...The fitness center is a closet in the basement, and all the other things are currently provided without a resort fee. The only exception is a breakfast that they are going to start providing. So, nice hotel with friendly staff and nice rooms. But because of these fees that feel like squeezing their guests unnecessarily, I don't know that we would choose it again.

We were going out to dinner and needed to iron some clothes, but our iron didn’t work. I called the front desk and was told someone would bring one to us right away. It never came. We had to leave for our reservation and told the front desk. They said they would have one waiting for us when we came back. It wasn’t ready. They told us they’d bring one up to our room, which they did…5 hours after I requested it. Even then, the “new” iron didn’t work. Not happy.

Upon arrival, the front desk staff were friendly and very helpful, assisting us with securing our two-day parking pass for our stay. The location of this hotel is prime, and we easily walked to everything. Our room was very quiet, and the bed was comfortable. Dining was both excellent and convenient: daily hot breakfast included and a top-rated restaurant for dinner inside the hotel. I would definitely recommend staying at the Empress Hotel when visiting La Jolla and we plan to stay here again.

Drink options and menu was fine. They were pet friendly. Parking was pricey at a public garage across the street. They transferred us due to maintenance in the first room. The staff interrupted as they forgot to refill the soaps. The second room blanket smelt horrible. The lady in the breakfast / terrace area was rude. Going to think twice before I stay here again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Empress Hotel. The location allowed us to walk to restaurants, shops and the ocean very easily. A big shout out to the hotel staff -- they were respectful and helpful.

Desk clerk held out luggage so we could do some exploring because we arrived 4 hours before check in

It’s in the perfect spot for everything.

The Empress is wonderfully located, an easy walk to La Jolla Cove with restaurants, convenience stores, and shops all around. That part was excellent. Breakfast covered the basics reliably: scrambled eggs, sausages, bread, coffee. Nothing fancy, but consistent. My only gripe was the juice selection: overly sweet mixes and no simple orange juice. Where the stay stumbled was room maintenance. Our bathroom door lock did not work at check-in, and engineering had to fix it. The toilet’s flush leaked and later failed on our last day. The in-room safe would not open because the batteries ran low while our documents were inside. The iron left a black stain on my shorts the first time I used it, which suggests it was not cleaned after a previous guest. None of these alone would be a deal-breaker, but together they added up.

Solo traveler. In town for the annual La Jolla Cove open water swim races. The Empress is about 10 minutes walk to the cove but significantly less expensive then the hotels next the cove. The place is nice and well kept. The only thing that wasn't above average was the breakfast as it was so so.

Great location, easy to walk to food and shopping

Centrally located in La Jolla village, the Empress is a good hotel for a long or short stay. It's a few blocks from the ocean and close to several restaurants and bars. The staff is very nice. Towels were replaced daily and trash was emptied. I was surprised that the bed was never made or the carpet vacuumed during our 5 day stay. It's a good thing we're not messy!

Excellent location

The hotel is just ok. We won’t be staying there again - much better hotels in the area. They charge a fee for early check in even if the room is available. Also for a late check out if desired. The free breakfast was terrible - cold eggs and cold potatoes. I was afraid of food poisoning so we ate elsewhere. The room and lobby need updating. Not appealing.

I liked the ambience and easy check in. It was a nice stay for the event we were there for and was walking distance from the beach. The breakfast was alright , the juice machine wasn’t working and my son likes apple juice. Eggs, sausage , bread and bagels were easy serve and close to the room to eat and relax .

The location was excellent. Had dinner one night in the chophouse restaurant located in the hotel and that was delicious.

The restaurant in the hotel ran loud machines right outside our window at 9am and refused to turn them off when asked. This was a rare opportunity for me to sleep in on vacation and it was ruined by the extreme noise levels. Also, we were told we paid for a hot breakfast at the hotel but it turned out to be only cereal and toast. Further, there is no need to pay for valet as sighted. Plenty of free street parking that’s easier to park in than valeting.

The staff are really nice and friendly. The hotel is a little dated but it worked really nicely for my family. The breakfast was limited but really tasty. The location is perfect to see all of La Jolla.
