Swan Hotel by Greene King Inns

Arrived late and left early. Breakfast was excellent, bed was comfortable, shower was hot. Carpark was full when I arrived at 2140 however.

The entire team at Swan Hotel was very friendly and engaged well with the guests. The restaurant was excellent for both breakfast and dinner. Our superior room was large, clean and very comfortable. The hotel was an easy 30 minute walk to Jane Austen’s home and Chawton. Would highly recommend the Swan Hotel for a stay in Alton.

Beautiful location and it’s a charming old inn, but the service was just so-so. They did keep my bad for me while I walked to the Jane Austen House Museum, which was nice and convenient. They have a lovely restaurant/ bar on the main level, but unfortunately the one night I stayed over, they had a 50th birthday party taking place. The DJ music was thumping and vibrating my room until 11:00 or midnight, and I couldn’t get to sleep until it all quieted down. There was no warning or mention of that taking place at check in, or apologies the next morning. Otherwise, I loved the place.

Good check in. Receptionist very helpful. Room was adequate & clean. Comfortable bed. As it was hot we had windows open but kitchen smells came in. Restaurant had run out of some items for dinner & buffet breakfast ran low toi as only one member of staff. But sensible prices for drink/food

Always like staying in this hotel with a maze of corridors and levels and quirky features such as the uneven floors due to age. Rooms are always clean and well-presented with the only drawback being a lack of a simple thing as a box of tissues. Skipped the breakfast option on this occasion (£12.50) but I have eaten there and the food is very nice (inc. the breakfast options !).

Good location in centre of town and easy parking at rear of hotel. Dinner here was excellent and good value for money. Our room was a good size and nicely decorated. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would just say the hotel could do with a paint refresh, but it is an old building

A decent place to stay. Excellent value for money. Comfortable beds. Lovely bathroom. Very clean. Bring your own toiletries, which I always do. There is a hairdryer. We ate in the pub, the food was lovely. The staff are very pleasant. We will return.

We were very impressed with our short stay here as we required somewhere to sleep after a wedding that was nearby. We booked 2 rooms for our family and both were very spacious and clean. The staff were very helpful and thought we’d missed the breakfast after getting up late but were able to still get brunch!

Clean but tired. Bed was comfy and room was bug. TV was limited but overall.ok

Staff were lovely and welcoming and I cannot fault the interactions I had with them. However the room I stayed in was not clean- marks on the bed sheets, bed not made properly, toothpaste marks in the bathroom and black marks over the towels. The tea and coffee selection provided was a nice touch but two packets of coffee had been opened and put back in the pot. I went to tell the staff and asked for my room to be cleaned and bedding changed, to which they were very apologetic and assured me this would be sorted while I was out. Unfortunately only the duvet sheet was changed, though I asked for clean bedding and towels. It was dissapointing having asked politely for these things to be the basic standard anyone would expect when staying at any location.

Quirky old building ideally placed for both Alton and the surrounding area. Stayed a few times and it is getting increasing shambolic. At check-in they didn't know whether I'd paid or not and no ability to print an invoice. Room smelt musty. Didn't have all the ingredients for a full english the first morning. No longer trusted to serve yourself coffee/tea at breakfast meaning you need to wait for overworked staff to fetch the jug thus increasing their workload.

It's not just the High St noise, which is to be expected, but the floorboards creak very loudly when anyone moves about. I was woken in the night several times by other guests just moving about in the corridors or the room above. I expect it will take major structural work to fix this.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The building is beautiful and attractive. I last stayed there in 1976 and it has changed a lot. The rooms are now all en-suite, which wasn't the case 49 years ago. The room in which I stayed was fantastically quiet and the bathroom was beautiful! There was a bath with a shower over and both were fabulous. I also loved the scent in the hair and body wash that was provided. I loved the decor in the bathroom but the room was a little dowdy, except for the art - pictures of birds - that I really liked. There were a few minor faults. The first is one I find in almost all hotels and that is that the Freeview TV has not had a channel update for years. As a result, some channels are absent and others were misnamed or in the wrong location. Freeview TVs should have a channel update scan performed 4 times a year. The bedding struck me as too short for the bed. I like being able to pull it over my head when I sleep and I could not do that. The loo had a drip from the cistern into the bowl and while this had no effect on its function, over a long period it will cost the hotel a significant amount in unnecessary water charges. But basically this was an excellent hotel in a beautiful town. I had dinner in the hotel on my first night. It was good but the menu struck me as rather corporate and I'd expect to see identical menus in other hotels in the chain. The waitress who served me was sweet and I was very happy to leave her a tip.

Only negative aspect was the room facing the High street was some excessive/loud vehicle exhaust noise one night. Better double glazing would help. Room was clean & tidy with excellent bath and shower. Very comfortable bed and handy room fan, which was also very quiet as was needed due to heat and limited opening of windows. Would definitely recommend and stay there again.

We stayed for one night, unfortunately the staff member who checked us in was very unhelpful. Bed very hard, thin walls, cracks in ceiling and wall. We also had water marks as though there was a water leak in the wall.

The Swan Hotel is well situated in Alton High Street with car parking at the back reached via the road bypassing the High Street. The bed was comfortable and breakfast was fine. However, the room was just too hot (I now remember this from my stay many years ago), as the room window barely opened at all. A fan was provided for the room. I could have put up with that, with a nice cool shower, however the bathroom had underfloor heating on and the shower, at its coolest, was still hot. A hot room, warm bathroom and no cool shower water was did not make for a happy stay, I’m afraid. It was all just too hot. I did want to mention this as I checked out, however the lady in charge, in reception this morning, was busy giving the cleaning staff a bit of a dressing down. Now, I’m sure there are items that need bringing to the attention of staff, however this should not be done at reception when a guest is standing there for 3 or 4 minutes waiting to check out. In the end, myself and another person just left the key on the reception desk and went.

Major issue with safety as bedside lamps were hanging by their electrical cord. Also arriving at 5pm the room was not ready as they were short of staff. Quality of food at breakfast was really good but took a long time to prepare and the staff were trying to close the dining area while guests were still eating

The room I stayed in had a noise like an large electric motor running nearby. The noise was fairly low level but noticeable due to its unusual nature. Breakfast service is very slow, after 30 minutes I had to leave without receiving a cooked breakfast as I had a ferry to catch.

The Swan was the perfect place to stay in Alton. Great location, very friendly staff, and comfortable and clean room. I will definitely stay here again on my next visit.

The shower wasn’t working properly and as I was checkin the lady was quite rude as I arrived at 11 and she didn’t like the fact that I was able to book a two night stay that late and was just rude

We were visiting Jane Austen House so this was very convenient for us to walk the countryside.

The property was very old and interesting and in a great location to walk to town facilities, the park and river.

We stayed in the Swan at Alton when attending a family gathering. The hotel was comfortable and the service was excellent with a good breakfast. Very centrally located in the middle of delightful town which is Jane Austin’s home town.

We really enjoyed our short stay at the Swan. Every aspect of our stay met or exceeded our expectations. The room was very comfortable, food was excellent quality and very good value. I will be using this Hotel again, when we visit Alton, and would not hesitate recommending the Swan.

The staff were friendly and helpful. I found the room very restful with a comfortable bed and pillows. It had a homely feeling. Some of the public corridors needed a fresh lick of paint but it was clean and the art work lifted the feel of it. The cooked breakfast was excellent - best I have had in a hotel. I would use this hotel again. A very pretty town and area.
