Big Island Retreat - No Resort Fees

Room was quiet. Close to the ocean. Most of the windows did not close properly. Room was overall clean. Parking was good. Coffee would have been a nice touch.

Clean and comfortable and a quick walk to a nice snorkeling beack and rental bikes. Washer & dryer on premises. Parking is free, but spaces are very small. Can hear the surf all night (no a/c but it isnt necessary). Outdoor kitchen for bbq etc. About 4 mi from all the hubbub in old Kona-town. Would definitely return to this place!

This is a beautiful property, my son and I had the Pineappleroomwhich had a kitchenette which we liked. Plenty of parking, our challenge was we rented a big pickup but still managedFyi, the prooerty is further up hill than once you turn onto road , keep going until you make tight left and you'llsee signs saying Big Island Retreat. We found The Big Island Rereat to be just as good as the pictures! It was easy to find right off Ali'i drive. Check in and out were both very easy. We stayed in the Ocean View room which was just as advertised. There is no AC which is in the room description so there was no surprise. Ceiling fan and to other larger standing fans kept the air moving through the room. There is a common area which has beach chairs to use and some snorkel gear and boogie boards as well and an outdoor kitchen with 2 BBQs and full sized fridge for anyone there can use The only challenge on the property was the parking. There is enough parking for the rooms, it's just a little tight especially if you wnat to back-in. I would suggest Not renting a large SUV. Overall the facility worked out perfecly for our vacation.

Big Island Retreat is a cost effective yet rustic facility. Our room had a bathroom outside the room and we had to regularly navigate the difficult parking situation. it is quiet and has a great beach about 4 tenths of a mile away when you walk or drive.

Love this place. The rooms are clean and well equiped. The additional communal areas (laundry and outdoor kitchen) really help make this place tick. BBQ whilst watching the sun go down or the moon reflecting of the Pacific is a real memory. If you considering staying here then just go for it.

Great location, close to the beach, good snorkeling, the amenities are good, the outside kitchen was very convenient with a ocean view, we stayed in the surfer room, our bathroom was outside across from room but was big, and clean, The down side no AC only fans, The host was nice. The property was immaculate with beautiful landscaping. The rooms were clean, light and airy. The neighborhood was quiet. Within 1/2 a mile of shopping and the best L&L Barbecue we’ve ever tried! I loved the precious little day geckos too. They have snorkeling equipment, beach umbrellas, coolers and beach chairs to use and even a cute little library for guests. Looking forward to spending time here again with family and friends.

I stayed in seaside room. Beautiful and airy. Super clean. Wonderful private patio. I will say that it was like a verandah that had been converted into a room so I could hear everything going on outside. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. They have beach equipment you can borrow which was nice. Didn't like the automatic $100 cleaning for a 2 night stay on top of room fee. Seemed excessive.

Big island retreat is located in a super quiet and beautiful area near the shore. Our guest room (orchid) was clean and spacious with a partial sea view, and our check in was very convenient. Two minor downsides: 1) there was no shampoo and bodywash in the room, but the onwer immediately brought a shampoo as we messaged her. 2) Utensils in the dining area were not very clean and there was still tea stains on the cups. Finally, get prepared for the tiny bugs (some are biting) inside the room at night as the hotel is located in a very natural area so insects are inevitable. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience here.

The room was full of ants in the bath and on the bed. There are geckos also, and the property manager said that is common, but for me, it was uncomfortable during the three nights. Why is it not written in the description? I checked again on Hotels.com and didn't find out about it. That wasn't very pleasant. The road to the building is complex and convenient, especially at night, as it is very dark outside. The room is open, and you cannot close the windows. The bathroom was slightly dirty and not in good condition. Unfortunately, there was no conditioner. Sorry, but all of these affected our travel on the Big Island.

Our room and bathroom were super clean and tidy. It seemed the entire property was maintained in excellent condition. We arrive at night and were surprised to see how close to the beach we were in the morning!

Spent a weekend Kona side because a friend flew in. Communication was good, room was clean, all necessities provided, comfortable bed, easy entry on check in. Would definitely stay again for a affordable get away spot.

The property is pretty and convenient to a beach. The room and the property itself was clean. The share shelves were a nice touch. The facility is very primitive, meaning there is NO A/C, no staff onsite and no housekeeping. None of these things are bad if it's what you're expecting; however, this listing on Expedia does not mention any of these things, so it was a great disappointment to arrive and find out about the lack of AC and housekeeping. The phone number to call & text staff are posted all over, so someone could be reached if needed, I imagine. (We did not try.) I was also concerned about privacy, as our screened porch faced the entrance to the accommodations upstairs and there was no door between the room and screened porch and no window covering on the screens (which is understandable, as covering the screens would have made the rooms even hotter) I wish I could post a picture to the review to show what I'm referring to. Having such openness did allow us to listen to all the birds and the rain though.

My husband and I liked staying at Big Island retreat. We imagined it a little more accessible but there was just one road in and out. Luckily we didn’t run into too many cars when we were leaving or coming back. Pictures made it seem like a bigger area and a better view but our window views were just towards parking and a building next to us so we were a little bummed out. As first timers to this island, we didn’t know about geckos being present on the island so when we got to our room we had gecko poop on our pillows and sheets. They were not changed right away until the middle of our week from our stay so we removed pillows that had any poop on it and covered any stains with an old piece of clothing. We were notified twice for plumbing services to come but first time they did not show up and second time was when we were offered an hour extra to stay before checking out but the property manager ended up telling us plumbing was coming so water needed to be shut off so we ended up just leaving right after that. Some pros, we had a fridge to store any fridge food, communication was good and when expressing any concerns they understood and gave reassurance to help, pretty good distance from one beach that we could walk to, had items we could use if needed for our stay, not a ton of people in the area but we could hear a lot of what was going outside if there were people. Good little area for moneys worth but my husband prefers more room space and privacy.

This was the perfect oasis for our brief stay in Kona. Far enough away from the crowded downtown area but still super close, we love the room, the beach access, and the convenience. Very quiet area, and tastefully decorated and clean. We would definitely stay here again!

1 block to ocean, very clean and cute and quiet. On Ali i drive, so easy to get into Kona. Microwave and fridge. Open air through screens so bird noise in the morning gets you up, but at a reasonable hour. And you want to get going anyway. Would stay here again. Good value

Cute hotel and good price. It is across the street from Kahalu'u Beach, so you can walk to great snorkeling. Go in the morning before the crowds! The little sun porch in the Bamboo Room was my favorite thing. With no AC, it felt a bit warm if you just come in from outdoor activities (already hot). But it was fine at night. Also, the hosts are up-front about the AC in their correspondence. So just be aware if you need a cold place to stay while on the Big Island. Hosts were very friendly too.

My only complaint is that because the private bathroom is offsite, meaning a trip outside to another close building, there needs to be better lighting. Our first night there was pitch black when I went to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I did contact the owners and they put up some makeshift solar lights that would last til about 10 pm and then go dark. They gave us a flashlight to use. My biggest concern is that they didn’t offer any lighting the first night nor would they have offered later, if I wouldn’t have said something to them. doubt we were the first guests to complain about the unsafe situation.

Overall, it was a good little place. However, not to be nitpicky, it didn't have a sofa and the bathroom requires leaving the room. Not the end of the world, but a consideration when choosing a room. I didn't care for it. Close to to the beach, a nice bar and restaurants nearby. Clean. The staff forgot we were coming (surprise!) When we arrived, but seemed like a nice kid.

Stayed August for 4 nights in Surfer Room. Daytime room was warm about 80F even with two fans and blinds down. Nighttime was cooler 72F. Humidity was medium. Good budget hotel. Clean room and bath. Very comfortable bed and pillows. Night was quiet unless there are loud talking quests past 8 pm quiet hours. Early morning you can hear birds chirping because windows are always open. Think of “glamping”

The Big Island Retreat is a lovely property located minutes on foot to one of the best snorkeling beaches on Big Island. We stayed in the Ocean view room which was over 2 floors. The view from the bedroom is lovely. The rooms are quite small with little storage. The bed was only a double and very high off the floor making getting into it really hard. The bathroom is not totally enclosed and has no basin as the kitchen sink is just outside. Although there was nobody staying in the rooms immediately next to us we could hear the people in the rooms beyond.

Our room was quiet with a comfortable bed and a beautiful view of the ocean with also the sounds of the ocean waves. The staff was responsive and friendly. So close to Kahalu’u Beach Park with wonderful snorkeling. The room does not have air-conditioning, but it has wonderful louvered windows and a ceiling fan, and also a room fan which we didn’t need in February.

Older hotel. It was good. No ac so be prepared for a warm room. The plus was a beautiful sunset from the room. Dinning not with a short walk. Lots of geckos. A couple were roommates which was fine by me. Overall the stay was fine but if I went to the big island in August again, I’d get a hotel with AC. Plumbing was old so you do get some run hot/run cold battles. We could easily hear the other rooms so privacy was limited.

No AC, balcony has no door and looks out to another building through the canopy; there are no fully shuttable window so any sound in the entire property can be heard through every room.

Awful "Reteat", this so-called "retreat" should NOT be allowed on Orbitz. Our room was a scene out of the movie "House of Horrots". We could not stay based on the Awful conditions and loud noice, etc. We booked for 5 nights, we did NOT get any refund. Property Mgt refused to work with us.

The managers were responsive. Beds were good. Price was reasonable for Kona area. I was aware that there was no air conditioning, but when it is 86 in the daytime and vert humid, no chance to cool off until after 9 some nights. You have to keep all windows open as well as drapes to get an air flow. Feel rather exposed to neighbors and get to listen to the dogs. We were in Bamboo. Maybe other rooms are better. Our screen porch has no door, so the heat of the day really makes it toasty. Also, the kitchenette shares the sink with the bathroom. There are many pictures on line, but you cant tell which unit they are showing. Most other rooms had adequate kitchens. Sorry to sound so negative, but we had 3 or 4 nights that we hardly slept because of heat, humidity and motion lights

Can't smoke/vape anywhere near property. Its required for guests to walk down a blind private road to the main coastal hwy by the beach 5-10 min walk. To even vape. No water pressure / or hot water unless you take off the shower head then everything works great. Quite time is 8-8 unless you're what seemed to be the managers friends talking load up on the balcony straight down into the lower room's.

This place is so perfect, I will def be coming back to stay here! Location is great, walkable and quiet ☺️

Place was a bit hard to access. Better directions describing its entry location in relationship to St. Peter's Catholic Church on the Kahalu'u Bay side would be helpful. Very quiet and nice porch/lounge area; nice interior common area; walk to Kahalu'u Beach Park which has good snorkeling and surfing.

Lovely stay, walking distance from Kahalu'u beach park (so you can avoid parking fees), and we appreciated the use of beach/snorkelling equipment. The balcony and other amenities were lovely, we would recommend staying here.

A little off the beaten path and extremely quiet. We had the aloha room with a nice balcony and ocean view. Big enough for the two of us and very comfortable. Affordable in comparison to other hotels. Close to the Outrigger where they have the Manta ray night tours.

Great location- far enough from town to avoid the hubbub but close enough to easily go to town. Easy walk to great beach, close to restaurants, convenience store. Quirky but well maintained property. Very clean room and comfortable bedding. Nice to have a small kitchen.

Adequately equipped, but as always: if you intend to cook much, make sure you check in one of your bags, and bring along a good chef’s knife, and maybe another one of your choice. We always do: condos never stock hi quality knives (they wouldn’t last), and the knives that are provided can’t be used expected to be sharp - they take too much abuse. Otherwise we found everything we needed, and enjoyed it a lot!
