What guests think

AI-generated summary based on recent guest reviews

Reviews of Royal Hotel describe a budget, centrally located property undergoing significant renovation, with inconsistent standards: some freshly updated, simple rooms and friendly staff, but frequent reports of hard-to-find check-in, maintenance problems (especially hot water), and cleanliness concerns.

Where do I actually start - from the moment I arrived at the front door of this establishment the alarm bells rang - the property is unmanned and there is a notice on the front door directing you to a sister hotel closeby - the female receptionist at the Waverley Inn was abrupt to the point of being ignorant - she gave me a key for room 36 - basically there is no personnel in the Royal Hotel whatsoever - so the front door is open all day and night - room 36 is situated on the third floor and there is no elevator - the place is like a maze and it took me ages to locate the actual room - if you are elderly or infirm this hotel is not suitable - the single room compromised of a small single bed with toilet and small shower cabinet - there was NO running water from the cold tap and the hot tap supplied a trickle and I mean a trickle of tepid water - absolutely useless - the radiator supplied no heat whatsoever - a hotel with NO heating - the old sash window could not be opened so NO air circulation at all - the room was musty which was not nice - the curtains were literally hanging from the curtain rail and when I tried to close them upon going to bed the whole assembly fell to the ground - so full daylight from 5 a.m - no WiFi - NO on street parking - in conclusion this establishment can only be described as NOT fit for purpose - I paid £66 for the night and I am raging - do yourself a favour and book into the National Hotel across the road as the Royal Hotel is a disaster

Multiple issues - room smelled so bad of damp. No TV on the wall - there was a bracket. Booked en-suite double room. For the shower not to work, no cold water from the sink tap, hot water trickled. Reported the issue was told by the time I arrived back for the second evening it would be sorted. Still no shower, and same trickle of cold. Minimal hot water from tap. The toilet cistern wouldn’t refill by the time I was leaving so unable to flush. On check out reported again, to be told by the person who check it was working, but he didn’t check the shower, the female who I had encountered on check in, reporting the issue, and collecting the key back reassured me it was working and there was no previous issues mentioned and they did have a problem that was now fixed. Very uncomfortable bed, small double - thankfully was a solo traveller. Cleanliness was none existing, a prison cell would have been better. Staff really didn’t seem to care - room was paid for so they got what they wanted. Breakfast was included but the state of the rooms and guesthouse would put anyone off consuming food from such a place. Basic amenities like running water is a must, especially when specifically booking an en-suite room. It might be a little cheaper but avoid at all costs.
