Beautiful B@B in a very covenient location, beatiful room, courteous and attentive staff, excellent breakfast included, and appreciated the welcome bottle of wine. Very classy!!

I feel at home here. That's probably the highest compliment I can give. Each bedroom is a little different but all are comfortable and cozy, yet well sized. Breakfasts are delicious and I love that they go until 10am. The place was lovely at Christmas, which is always a wonderful time to visit Winston-Salem and be so close to Old Salem and downtown - walkable to both! The property is clean. The innkeepers and waitstaff are friendly and warm. Parking and WiFi are ample and free. The beds are very comfortable. Very conveniently located. Lovely and historic. Owners continue to refine each inn and gently update the building systems. What you may need to know: some rooms are not well insulated for temperature nor neighborhood noises and highway. A few lightbulbs were out but quickly remedied. The route to the parking lot takes a map although in back of property, due to all the one-ways (find Brookstown Rd and that will get you there without the highway). I wish there parking lot and route with steps were better lit. There is one main floor bedroom but otherwise, you'll need to climb stairs. Make sure to check if your room has a connected bathroom or one down the hall - both are convenient but some people need that immediacy. I've stayed before and will happily stay there again.

My husband and I stayed in the Piedmont Suite. It was a really nice room. It was very large with a sitting area. The architecture of this historical home is beautiful. The restaurant is nice with wonderful gourmet food. The staff are nice and very accommodating. The location is perfect. We really enjoyed our stay and plan to return!

The Hotel is an Historic Inn and it is a fantastic example of a bed & breakfast. The building, itself, as well as furniture, sitting rooms, lamps, accents, all had an authentic look and were pristine and beautifully placed. The hotel provided a split of wine to enjoy in the evening. The breakfast service was great, being a formal hot sit down meal with several options; and ours were perfectly prepared. There were a couple of unfortunate surprises. First is that there is no elevator and a steep winding staircase leads to the upstairs rooms. Not a problem for us - it's an Historic Inn after all - but others may have difficulty. More unsettling was that our bath - altho private - was down the hall. The Inn did provide robes for us to use, but the trip past a few other occupied rooms was a little uncomfortable. Had this been indicated upfront, we would have been better prepared or made other arrangements. Finally, the Inn has plenty of parking behind the building, but the route there requires moving 2 lanes to the right on an exit ramp from the expressway. Again, not a problem for us, but it does require some care. Overall, a lovely building and a good value, but guests need to know the circumstances.

She is a charming old lady. Maybe a little past her prime but her age just adds to her personality. This is a unique property that was once a grand home, so enjoy it for that. She is not your usual cookie-cutter chain. You will sleep in a room that was once, long ago, someone’s bedroom. The staff was perfect. The split of wine waiting for us in our room was a nice touch, and the complimentary table service breakfast really sealed the experience.

The Shaffner Inn is a beautiful, historical home. The restaurant inside the home is wonderful! I had the shrimp and grits and it was delicious! The breakfast is included in the night's stay at the inn and made our stay extra special.

Gracious staff,and wonderful breakfast. It may be a little difficult for older people to negotiate the stairs with luggage.

The first place that we have stayed to call ahead to check on our arrival time to have our welcome beverages ready when we arrived. The staff has been friendly and helpful.

The beautiful Inn is located in downtown Winston-Salem with one-way and two-way all around the location. So was a bit confusing. Once there I was very pleased with staff (Reagan, Gary, and Kelli all were 5*) and facilities. Each room has it's own thermostat, which allowed me to control the room to a cooler sleeping temp.. The rooms come with a half split of wine and choice breakfast off the menu. The only hiccup was no hot water in my room, but Gary nicely saw to the matter and got me another bathroom so I was able to take a hot shower. Overall a wonderful experience.

The property was very close to downtown and though a few blocks away it is walkable. There are many shops and restaurants downtown. The staff was very accommodating with any request. The Founders Restaurant was delicious with a menu to please anyone looking for a great brunch which was complimentary. They are soon going to open to the public for dinner soon. The only reason I gave four stars for cleanliness is because there were two wash cloths left hanging in the shower from the previous guests. The bathroom could use a bench or shelf under the window to accommodate toiletries. That's my only suggestion. We would definitely stay here again.

A rare find and pleasant surprise. The inn is very well appointed and in excellent condition. The staff were very warm, welcoming, and accomodating. The breakfast was very good. My wife and I enjoyed our stay!

What a disappointment The Shaffner Inn was. The room we had reserved, the Piedmont Suite, was spacious and at first entrance was impressive. Sadly, we found the floor needed vacuuming, the ladies dressing table mirror was so dusty, you could write your name on it. Two lamps on either side of the couch didn’t have lightbulbs in them. Ironically, there was a big extension cord, that could be easily tripped on running across the floor to these two non-working lamps. The TV was not connected to anything and we had to use the inn’s WiFi to watch a movie on our laptop. We called the “emergency number” about the non-working TV and the voice mail message said they would quickly respond, but from our 7pm call, to the following morning, NO ONE CALLED. The toilet seat in the bathroom was loose and there was no body soap in the dispenser in the shower. The mattress in the king size bed was hard and VERY uncomfortable. The morning breakfast consisted of strawberries and blueberries, plain bagels, little pastries, boxed oatmeal, orange juice, coffee and water. Our reservation (see pictures) said we would receive a hot breakfast, but we were told at check-in that they said they gave their chef the day off and we would be receiving a light continental breakfast instead. No one even asked how our stay was as we were leaving. None of these deficiencies were reflected in the rather high price for the room.

Kelly was so kind to accommodate us. McKenzie was so sweet at breakfast. The inn was beautiful, clean and so close to historic Salem. So glad we stayed here.

Incredible experience from even before I arrived. Extremely welcoming and I felt right at home. I only wish I could have experienced breakfast as we had to leave early- the porch was beautiful and set for a nice cup of coffee. Bathrooms very clean and stocked, bedrooms very clean and comfortable. Great visit!!!

Loved the size of the room and the bathroom with the claw foot tub! Staff was super friendly and helpful, as well. The house/building is incredible and the amazing to stay in such a well maintained piece of history.

We stayed in the Wachovia room Christmas Eve to Christmas Day as a midpoint to our final destination. The innkeeper was very attentive in making sure we were able check in late with no hiccups. Instructions were clear, easy to navigate even with a few one way streets near by. We were extremely pleased with the ambiance, location, attentiveness of staff and most of all THE BREAKFAST!! The biscuits and gravy are still being talked about. Rooms were clean, bed was comfy, the clawfoot tub in the room was to die for. We brought a bottle of wine and thought we were SOL — but the room had a wine opener and a bathtub tray to hold my wine and chocolate. Perfect for relaxing and had everything we needed — including water bottles and a mini fridge!

Enjoyed our brief stay. Had a room without an adjoining bathroom but it was just down the hall. Took a minute to get used to but worked out fine for me and my wife. Would have brought slippers had we known. Aside from that no issues.

No room controls for AC. We froze at night in the room. Would not recommend or stay again.

We like the historical nature of the property. Did not mind at all that the bathroom was down the hall and the creaky nature of the old building. But... It would have been nice to have some tissues in the room. Also, we think you should present the rooms as NOT having TV service (bring a book) rather than what was a frustrating time finding a channel and keeping service.

Warm historic atmosphere, comfortable bed, excellent breakfast. But lacking some modern needed amenities like microware, fridge, independent thermostat.

We like this hotel. It is so beautiful. But too noisy at night. Because the location is near street.

We really enjoyed our second stay at the Shaffner Inn. Everyone is always so friendly and helpful. Such a neat place tucked away in the city and we look forward to being able to go back!

Check In was from 4PM -6 PM In 2025 that doesn't work people are coming various times in the day. Front desk person left just after 5 PM so any service or concern was unavailable outside of an emergency. Was sent a text saying I'd get some complimentary wine didn't see the text till after I settled in the room around 5:30 PM so too bad don't get it why didn't you remind me at check in. Also told at check in get 2 bottles of water, they were not there well the housekeeper was supposed to put them in the refrigerator, but she didn't and now I'm gone (after 5:30) So too bad. The wine and the water are really little unimportant things but demonstrates a level of service far below even low to moderate priced chains.

We lived staying at the Shaffer Inn ! Everyone was super friendly including Randall, Alyssa and Molly. The Wachovia room was enormous and well decorated, included a very nice bathroom with all the amenities you could ask for. Oh and the breakfast was fantastic !

The service is wonderful! The property is beautiful & very quiet considering the location is right downtown. When we woke up, we had no idea just how many guests there were because it was so quiet inside which made for a good night’s sleep.

A wonderful historic, quirky hotel with spacious and beautifully decorated rooms. Breakfast was made to order and was delicious. Only 10 min walk from downtown Winston-Salem. Would highly recommend.

We loved our stay! The staff was wonderful, the bed was super comfortable and the room was very clean. Included a delicious breakfast with the best biscuits I have ever eaten. The location was very convenient and we were able to walk everywhere. We will definitely return! Thank you for a great visit!

The hotel is very nice, if not old, the staff is friendly, and it's convenient to many things in Winston Salem. The breakfast though was inadequate and not tasty. I booked her because it's a bed and breakfast and it was highly disappointing.

We had a problem with our thermostat in our room not working. Since we were a late arrival, the problem was addressed first thing the next morning. We had a problem with our server at the Founders restaurant for breakfast. The server definitely had an attitude, and when I questioned her, she of course denied it, and she left early so that I never received my breakfast until the next staff came on!! However, owner arrived the next morning with replacement staff and made everything right for a happy ending. All is well that ends well. Lovely historic building with very large rooms.

Breakfast was very good and the servers (Gary and Abby) were especially personable. Rooms were spacious and clean.

Chose the inn as a stay for a quick girls trip and it did Not disappoint! Shane, the innkeeper, was very communicative and helpful. We stayed in the Twin Pines room. It was so comfortable and well appointed for our needs. Breakfast was delicious! The inn was empty so we got to explore a bit and we are definitely coming back. The only thing i wish was a full-length mirror in the room

The Shaffner Inn was a lovely place to stay. Check-in and check-out were very easy and we were welcomed with a bottle of wine! The staff was very communicative before hand. Our room was very comfy, though it was in the basement level, but very roomy and the beds were super comfortable. We both had the traditional breakfast, which was average, and service in the restaurant was a little slow, but otherwise a perfectly fine meal. I would highly recommend staying here. Great place in a central location for the town.

Enjoyed my second stay in a week while visiting Winston Salem. Nice property and fairly convenient. The included breakfast was a nice treat.
