Melville Castle Hotel

Wow! From the time you pull into the parking lot until you check out! Friendly and professional staff, spacious room and the castle is clean, clean, clean throughout! Thank you, Fiona and Michelle in reception, Josh and the hostess for the restaurant, (I didn't get her name), and Giuseppe (?) and Dami (?) at the bar, for giving our first trip to Scotland a wonderful start. We're grateful for Fiona willing to accommodate our daughters last minute plans to join us even though the hotel was fully booked. Our bed was comfortable with clean, warm linens. Great water pressure and plenty of hot water in the shower. Quiet! We barely heard other quests even though the hotel was fully booked. Plenty of parking. Hiking trails on the property to admire the countryside. A small recluse for 2 to 4 people along the wooded edge of the property to enjoy a quiet talk or enjoy a drink. The patio area at the rear of the castle has a fire pit and fountain that adds to the beauty and charm of this estate. We woke up to bagpipes playing at the entrance in the morning. Unsure if that is the castle's morning routine or if it was for the wedding that was taking place that afternoon. Either way, it was a great way to start the day. We didn't have a single flaw in our stay and hope to return some day. They are also dog friendly, so you can take your best friend with you! We highly recommend Melville Castle for an exceptional experience.

We really enjoyed our two night stay at Melville Castle.The castle is beautiful and well located for trips into Edinburgh,set in lovely countryside.It is very dog friendly,with a dog friendly area in both the restaurant and breakfast room.We stayed in the two bedroom suite which was perfect for a family stay with lots of space and very comfortable beds as well as being beautifully decorated.An extra bathroom or separate toilet would have made it even better.We would recommend highly!

We have stayed here three times now and will certainly be back. It is ideal for travelling with our dog; the staff fuss him, he gets to be with us in the dog-friendly mini dining-room and got his own sausage at breakfast. We found the evening dining room in the basement a bit tricky with a spiral staircase so the staff set a table for us on the ground floor. Huge comfy bed and plenty space in the rooms.

It’s kinda far away from the city center but very beautiful place, next time I go I’ll rent a car because they have big parking and no charge.

We loved walking around the grounds and down by the river. The trees were amazing. The room service was excellent. It was nice to have breakfast and dinner on site. Convenient location to visit Rosslyn and Edinburgh.

We wanted to stay in a castle, and this delivered 100 percent. It’s grand, exciting, and comfortable at the same time. Staff was very friendly, didn’t have dinner at the hotel but the bar was a great experience for an after dinner drink. Highly recommend.

Excellent hotel , with lots of charm and character, outdoor seating was great in the gardens and bar is very comfortable and cosy. Restaurant was very nice and have yet to sample their afternoon tea. The staff were extremely professional and very helpful and i would highly recommend staying here

Transportation is not readily available. Limited restaurant menu and availability. Be ready to carry your own luggage up the stairs. The desk staff was the same person as the bartender, so not efficient. Needs a thorough cleaning. Just not the castle experience I was hoping for and have experienced in the past.

Very unique castle with excellent staff and dining options. The grounds are beautiful especially with Sammy the stallion and lovely the pony in the back. Definitely would stay again.

My daughter and I thought we would end our vacation in Scotland on a high note by staying in the castle. This was not what we expected. Note to anybody planning to stay here please check if there is a wedding venue happening. We were told there’s no service for us because they didn’t have enough staff because of the wedding. We paid a lot of money for this experience. It was a disaster. The property is fine. It is in the middle of nowhere so you really have to plan on staying at the castle if you’re on a tour and you tour guide drops you off like we did. After taking some nice pictures, we decided we would have a drink at the bar. There was no bartender. We waited 25 minutes. My daughter stayed there and I went to the gift shop. I told her what I wanted if the bartender appear. I purchased my items and went back to the bar. They were still no bartender. at that time I went out to the very nice lady at the front desk and asked her if there was a bartender tonight. She went into the back of the bar and a bartender appeared.. We were the only people in the dining room, yet we were seated at the table that overlooks the kitchen. After our food arrived we never saw another waitress until we were finished eating. Housekeeping did not vacuum the room. The crumbs on the floor was still there when we returned the next day. The dirty cups we used were not replace with clean ones. We stayed at all different venues during our vacation, This was the worst and the biggest waste of money. P

Curtains in the junior suite were ripped and rather tacky looking. There was a wasps nest outside the window cleaners left it open, several visitors got in, not the best start to my stay. The carpet looks filthy, beeds a shampoo. No offer of a tour of the castle. Advise a change to soft closing fire doors, this would prevent hearing every guest coming and going. Asian girl at breakfast tried to add paid for breakfast to my rooms saying she'd speak to management... please do its down on my printed itinerary. Beautiful building and surroundings interesting history. Customer service lacked somewhat and still waiting on a response to a simple question asked.

Terrible. Furniture looked like it was picked up from the tip. Wallpaper ripped. Extremely hot with no fan. Bathroom very shabby. Have stayed in much nicer barn conversions for a quarter of the price. Nothing luxury about this place. Room looks nothing like pictures on the website.

The hotel was was very disappointing. The room were very shabby, with stains on the wall and shabby furniture. The service was very average and the room wasn’t cleaned well. The castle and grounds were amazing. Such a shame the hotel doesn’t make the most of its surroundings.

Woke up in the morning to there have been a leak from the ceiling in the bathroom. I fell in the water and really hurt my leg. Once getting to my feet I noticed a layer of mould in the corner of the bathroom where this leak must have been happening for some time. Was offered £40 off my bill which looking back now is pretty pathetic as my leg has hurt all day and began to bruise. Would not stay again. The restaurant is overpriced. I’ve enclosed a picture of the food, the burger was £26.50. It was dry and the bun was over cooked and crumbly. Would expect a lot more for a £60plus food bill for one person. Ordered the apple crumble to be told there wasn’t any custard and had to have cold double cream on it.

We wanted to love it here, but had a few issues during our stay. We stayed here for the 1st night of our honeymoon after traveling from the US. It took us multiple plane rides & a long drive to reach the castle. We were hoping for a relaxing stay after a stressful day of traveling. The hotel did not tell us there was a wedding that day at the castle. We very much understand that it's a wedding venue, but there's only about three communal rooms & a lobby for all guests to share, so it was very tough not to feel like you were in the way of someone's very special & important day. If you are a non-wedding guest there is not really anywhere to hang out besides your room until dinner at 8pm. We really would have appreciated a heads up about the wedding & would have booked a different day so we wouldn't have felt like we were intruding on someone's very special event. When check-in happened that afternoon, it was also the wedding's cocktail hour & there was a line forming through the lobby with the wedding happening around it. It was a bit chaotic on the hotel's part. The reception music also goes until midnight so you'll hear it from your room, just a FYI. Our other issue was that there was mildew in our shower. Our room itself was lovely & the castle grounds are gorgeous. The staff were also very kind & helpful during our stay. I'd give the staff a 10/10. Just a note to please give travelers a heads up about weddings & to be more organized with non-event guests & event guests.

Classic double room. Nice atmosphere, very good dinner, NO AC in rooms, could not regulate the shower water temperature that kept fluctuating, reception floor very sticky, friendly staff. Interesting experience for one night.

Feels like stepping back in time staying here. It was lovely and quiet and the grounds are beautiful. Dinner was fantastic.. we had mussels and filet. Both were very good! The tub was huge which is my favorite. A nice retreat from the bustle of Edinburgh, relaxing and romantic. We want to come back.

I booked a single room for one night, the room was lovely with a four poster bed, amazing shower, very modern large smart TV and the fastest WiFi I’ve ever had in any hotel. I tested the speed and got 500 mbps ! When I stay in hotels I generally accept I won’t sleep as long as at home but this was the exception and I had a wonderful sleep in this bed.

Staff was AMAZING! We stayed in the Castle Suite which is a gorgeous and spacious room. It has a huge bathtub! It also has a door that leads to the garden. The ponies were a beautiful site from our room. The grounds are spectacular.

Excellent food, great location and super staff. Accommodations- we booked 2 rooms. One was outstanding the other not so great. We were given an accessible room and if you needed an accessible room it would have been suitable but NoT for someone who does not need an accessible room. Not to be disrespectful but I was very uncomfortable in this room. Very disappointed and would hesitate recommending this hotel for that reason. Ceilings low, bathrooms very different and have to bend down to see in the mirror.

Beautiful location and large rooms. Very comfortable beds. The shower in my daughters room frequently went from full on to a trickle, making it difficult to get a shower in. The shower exhaust fan in my room didnt work at all. My son had no complaints on his room. My daughter and her fiance loved the breakfast. The bar was welcoming and had friendly service. The restaurant, though a little overpriced for the serving size, served very delicious dinners. Summer may be brutal without A/C, but it was for us in early spring. Winter, I'm sure, would be great there.

Loved the uniqueness with it being a castle. Wish we were able to stay longer. The stairs were difficult to manage with our large suitcases. Not much you can do with it being an old building though.

Last minute trip. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We were not made aware of a wedding function on the Saturday so were the only people in the restaurant with one other couple for dinner and breakfast the following morning was table service rather than buffet. Handy for Edinburgh.

The building is wonderful as are the grounds very traditional. food is great and has a very nice 24hr Bar But what makes this place amazing is the staff very friendly and will bend over backwards to make sure you’re ok. Michelle at reception went above and beyond she was absolutely amazing and made sure our difficult requests were catered for

This hotel truly has a wow factor. Impressive from the moment you arrive. Michelle made the check in a delight. Perfect combination of professional and friendly. The room was incredible. It was a true castle experience. The house keeping staff added a level of excellence. Both dinner and breakfast were perfect. This is a property not to be missed.

Perfect spot it you don't want to stay in the city. Ubers and taxis into Edinburgh are easy to arrange. Was upgraded to the Castle Suite and absolutely adored our stay. Highly recommend.

Melville Castle was one of my all time favorite stays in Scotland. Well worth staying here and driving into Edinburgh as you'll get all the peace, comfort and beauty of the countryside, inside an immaculate castle. Walking the grounds, it was surrounding by stunning tree carvings of figures around the castle that were enthralling to go investigate, as well as the most magical trees in the forest, huge ones I might add! The bed was the most comfortable of any of the sleeps in Scotland and the staff were super kind and helpful. I was really blown away by this place and would recommend highly for visiting Edinburgh.

Our stay was beautiful! The castle is stunning, including the surrounding grounds. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a unique experience. My only 2 caveats: there’s weak cell signal within the hotel (but there is WiFi) and the location is a bit out of the way if you’re mainly sightseeing in the city centre. Uber will be rude about coming out here; one tried to guilt us into tipping more, claiming we had put the wrong address into our app. We preferred to use the taxi service the hotel is partnered with; Derek was incredible. The prices are nearly the same but the manners are much better.

It's a beautiful property in the country with public bus access if you are willing to walk a mile to the bus stop. I considered it good exercise and a beautiful walk if its not raining. We had some issue with our room keys and had to have them reactivated every night when we returned from our excursions. The breakfast is very good but I'm not a big breakfast eater. I thought it was included in our stay but its not. I wish I'd skipped it all together when i checked out and realized it was 15 pounds for a cup of tea and a fruit salad i had been opting for. If I'd have been ordering from their breakfast menu I'd have been ok with the charges.

Booked a 1 night stay here whilst working away. Nice big hotel as youd expect being a castle, plenty of parking & great views around the large grounds. Room was spacious & comfy. Only real downside for me was the food, i had haddock, chips & mushy peas. Haddock was small, the peas felt like they were tinned peas mashed with a fork. Portion size along with price & then to find out theyd also stuck a service charge on the bill make it hard to recomend eating here. Overall id recomend a stay here, however id probably take a drive out & eat elsewhere.

Beautiful property, spacious room, and excellent dining experience. We weren’t sure what to do about dinner since the castle is just outside of the city, but upon arrival, the staff asked us what time we would like to have booked for our dinner. The food was very good and we enjoyed our meal. We will have to stay here again when we visit next time. 5 stars.

This castle is beautiful inside and out. I love how the rooms are decorated in a medieval theme. The breakfast was delicious and filling. The staff was attentive and helpful. The grounds were huge and also intimate. We loved this wonderful place and highly recommend it.
