Cromwell's Tap House

Convenient central location. Friendly staff and discounted food / drink. Rooms are a little dated, but characterful. Can be noisy at the front. Would be nice to offer breakfast, though plenty of places close by. This was our third stay at Cromwells !

Lovely old building which I prefer to modern buildings. Room was small but comfortable. No parking but not a problem for us. Didn’t eat there but it’s an option. Good choice of beers etc. The pub is nice and historical, clean so quite happy with our stay.

The room wa clean and comfortable. The staff are brilliant. There were a couple of 'issues' when we arrived. TWe couldn't get the bedside lights to work and the radiator was very noisy and not heating. We mentioned this to the staff and both issues were sorted straight away (the fuse switch on the wall had been turned off, hence the lights not working and th radiator had an airlock and needed to be bled).There is some noise from the bar below but this ends when the bar closes at 10.30 and then all is quiet. The food in the bar is delicious and you get a discount on food and drink if you are staying upstairs!

Not great, no breakfast available. No where to leave your key when you left at 09.05 am. Food prices in the bar were quite high and no snack meals available. Rooms noisy as expected as it’s a pub /restaurant and rooms are above the bar. Rooms are comfortable, clean and comfy

Excellent pub accomodation, little street noise , no noise from the pub below, clean room everything you need, town amenities a few metres away. Excellent beers and beer garden at rear, staff pleasant and helpful.

Stayed here a number of times over the years. So convenient for the bars and shopping. Lovely quaint room that shows the period of the building. Lovely and clean. The bar area and beer garden are very popular. Will definitely be staying here again before the end of the year for Christmas shopping.

Great staff, bar was packed on arrival but we were checked in to our room straight away. Far too busy & noisy to eat in the bar, so they opened the restaurant for us and another couple so that we could eat in peace. Despite the number of customers we were served quickly and efficiently. Very good food. Room was a bit tired, flaking paint and in need of a bit of updating but the bed was comfortable and the room reasonably quiet even though on a main street. Good location just on the edge of the town centre. If parking, beware the Wyle Cop NCP, equipment doesn’t work, you have to have an App to pay and it took us an hour to get a payment through by telephone.

Such a cosy little place, we had a great sleep here, and the location was close to all the things we wanted to see in town as well. The details of the wood beams in the building etc showed its history. Only thing that's a bit funny is there's no staff on site after 10pm... so don't get locked out!! If you're responsible and have your wits about you shouldn't be a problem, but maybe take a photo of the phone numbers that are on the back of the door before you go out just in case.

It's exactly what the site states, it's an old pub/ building. Be prepared for the sponginess of the floors, windows don't open (fire hazard) and the very poor quality renovation work. The WiFi didn't work while we were there, very inconvenient.That being said, it's in a convenient location and a good price. The bed was comfortable and the staff were nice.

We liked that the bar was open but unfortunately the restaurant was not open.

Dirty carpet and sofa. Poor shower. Blocked shower tray meant mid shower pauses to allow water to run away. Hot/cold balance almost impossible to maintain.No staff around when we left to complain to. Bed on a slope down towards the headboard. No breakfast option. First and last time staying her

Room was very clean & had everything we needed. Great selection of drinks & enjoyed the food with family. Overall an enjoyable stay thanks to the lovely staff.

Room was ok. Bed comfy and clean bedding. However bathroom was spoilt by lack of window that opened and shower enclosure which has lots of mouldy marked grouting, so much so we didn’t want to even use it. Corridors to room also have marked and fraying carpet which doesn’t set good impression. Shame as place has character.

Although the room was a little bit tatty , it was very clean . The bed was super comfortable, I slept really well. The staff were lovely. We ate at Cromwells Tap house and the food was delicious. I would definitely stay here again .

Quite quirky, complimentary tray basic and shower poor pressure. Quite dusty in more out of reach areas like on the top op the bed top and the carpet was worn near the en suit. the bed was very comfortable and the staff were friendly. Would expect more for the money.

Staff were helpful, however, there were several issues with the room. We expected the room to be noisy due to the location, however, do not expect to sleep unless you have ear plugs. The secondary glazing is so old and poorly sealed that there is a lot of sound bleed. One of our sash windows was also impossible to fully close. The shower room had quite obvious mould along the inside wall, so it doesn't look like it has been fully cleaned in a while. Other than that, there were minor issues with missing tea bags, shower gel and poor wifi.

Bar well stocked. Efficient checking in. Staff all friendly and helpful. On entrance room looked OK however after spending a few hrs there it was evident we had chosen poorly. Carpet was filthy furnishings disgraceful covered with throws to hide stains. Worst part was the bed. The worst three nights sleep we have ever had. Mattress needs condemning and we both woke in pain with our backs. Bathroom adequate. Shower tray had no safety mat. This should be looked at. No fan and bathroom mirror not working. We would add none of this is due to poor staff cleaning as they cannot be responsible for poor furniture and fittings. On discussing whether we should complain we decided against it as we had booked a superior room so it seemed pointless! Furthermore entry and exit door cannot be opened fully and kept sticking. In an emergency this could be fatal. Comments made to encourage owners to improve accommodation. Spend an evening in room 5 and see how you get on. We won't be returning. Very disappointing stay.

Cromwells is in a great position in the town with nearby car parking. We were greeted with a smile by the staff and shown our room (5). Room was large, clean and the bed was large and comfy, also plenty of tea/coffee. If you're a light sleeper I'd suggest ear plugs as, although there is double glazing (it's an old building), you can still hear some noise from the street. Sadly we never used the bar area but it looked lovely. We enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Highly recommend to stay at Cromwell’s Tap House. It’s located in the heart of Shrewsbury, at walking distance of pretty much everything in town. Only 7 minutes from the train station. The rooms were located on the first floor above the pub. We heard no noise whatsoever, and only in the morning we heard some cars go by, but it was of no nuisance to us. The room was very clean, bed was comfortable and there were a lot of amenities like a hairdryer, coffee, tea, and towels. The linen were also very clean. The discount at the pub was a nice bonus; they have a nice selection of beers at good prices.

Friendly, helpful staff. Clean room, could do with a refresh but had everything we needed. Bed was too soft and tilts down towards the head so quite uncomfortable. Generally fine though.

Huge, comfortable four-poster bed in a less than huge room with a markedly sloping floor - definitely uphill from one corner to the other. Bear in mind this is basically a pub with rooms, so expect to hear noise and piped music from the bar and chatter from the beer garden outside the window. They didn't make up the room or give us clean cups (but did top up the tea and coffee). The bathroom extractor fan didn't work.

Stayed 1 night, small but practical room. Uneven floors but to be expected with how old it is. The outside sash window wouldnt close properly, so it was a good job inner windows closed. Was noisy as on the street. Thanks for the stay

Low ceiling in the hallways, not very comfortable when you are 6’2” , room is very small , would have appreciated knowing about these details ahead of booking

Staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful. However the room (no.2) was average: Pros - Clean room, bedding and towels Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk and biscuits (including kind offer from staff to ask if I needed more) Clean bathroom en-suite, plenty of towels Cons - Floor is very uneven Wardrobe had hangars but only coat hooks inside, so unable to hang anything properly (Nb: even if the hooks were used, there wouldn’t be enough space to hang clothes up at the same time!) No shelves inside either, so basically nowhere to put clothes other than the wardrobe floor. The curtain wasn’t wide enough to cover the window properly (!), leaving a lot of extra light in at sunrise. The window was open when I arrived (which I was fine with) but even when I closed it, it still didn’t seal off much sound from outside (cars and people passing by). No toiletries in the bathroom apart from shower gel. (I didn’t realise this until the pub had closed at 10pm so couldn’t ask for any) This would have been fine with me had I been advised of the situation in advance to ensure I brought my own. Overall I felt the room was adequate for a single night stay, with being willing to ‘manage’ with the window and curtain in particular. The bed was comfortable enough, although I suspect many people would find it a bit too soft.

It was nice, liked how we could come and go without a designated time, bed was comfy, accidentally overslept, sorry about that but will definitely come again as the staffwere vwry welcoming and nice

It was good in the main but room really noisy when people were below in the bar. Also shower was cold on one of the nights. Staff were lovely apart from one grumpy git (male).

Stayed here for 1 night. The staff greeted us on arrival and check-in was swift and easy. We were shown to our room and all instructions given. There was a music event on all day which was a fantastic surprise. The atmosphere was brilliant. The food was fantastic on both days. Especially the Sunday roast which was cooked to perfection with the best gravy I have ever tasted. All of the staff were hard working, attentive and polite. But a special thanks to Nick and Ella who were especially helpful. We would definitely recommend Cromwells Tap House for a stay. We will definitely be back.

Loved our two day stay at Cromwells Tap House, the bed and pillows were super comfy so we had a great nights sleep. Our room overlooked the road which was quity busy but in the evening and overnight its was extremely quiet. Wooden beams and quirky floors give it lots if character. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Fabulous meals served here too. Great location for exploring the town and just a short walk from the train station. Looking forward to staying again hopefully in October.

Nice, old property, above a pub. Big, clean room with comfy bed and good shower. In centre of beautiful, historic town. No parking - used NCP Wyle Cop, which is a 5 minute (uphill) walk.

It was lovely to stay in such an historic building in the centre of Shrewsbury. The location is very convenient.

Great place in a super location. Friendly staff serving wonderful beers and food. Would stay here again.

Ideal for a one night stay. The only negative is that it is next to a busy road so you can’t leave the window open overnight without it being noisy.

Comfortable room in an old inn, with a 4-poster & settee. Good strong, hot shower. Very quiet, so a good night’s sleep. Very friendly host& staff - the inn providing excellent food & refreshment. Perfectly placed close to the station, car parks, attractions & main shopping areas. All within one of the nicest towns in England.

Can recommend a stay here. Our room was clean and comfortable. There was plenty of hot water and the towels were large and soft (I hate trying to get dried in the morning with a towel the size of a face flannel that has the texture of sandpaper). The staff are excellent, really friendly and helpful (it has been a while since I have booked into a hotel and a member of staff has shown me to the room and carried my suitcase). The rooms are upstairs above a pub. This means stairs and some noise. It is a really old building with plenty of character which means creaky stairs and corridor and limited soundproofing. However, after closing time(11pm) there is no noise. We had a 'larger' room with a fourposter bed. The room was on the small side but there was room enough to walk around the bed and there was chest of drawers, wardrobe etc. Once again it is an old building so this can be expected. The location is great. Within walking distance of the railway station and all the shops, bars, restaurants, tourist sights. We had our evening meal downstairs in the bar and it was delicious. All of this for the price is a no-brainer. We will definitely be returning.

A lovely pub with great accommodation, rooms was clean and modern with a great shower. We ate in the restaurant and the food was great and reasonably priced. A great selection of real ales etc. Staff were all polite, friendly and helpful. If you’re staying you get 10% off your bill! Highly recommend this lovely pub.
