Sonesta ES Suites San Diego - Rancho Bernardo

The hotel is very welcoming, and has a warm feeling. Every aspect of is VERY clean, and well maintained. The staff if very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. The person who checked us in, Mark Angeli, appeared to be real busy, and under pressure, but delivered like a champ. Got us the room we wanted, and hand delivered the bedding we needed for our daughter. This was late in the evening, and we saw him again in the morning delivering towel at the pool. He’s amazing! The pool area has a big fire pit with lots of comfortable seating, a big grassy area, and two bbq grills. Everything’s spaced out just right. The property is surrounded by tall trees, and feels like a nice getaway. Will definitely be coming here again!

Was cheaper than other properties, had a good pool and basketball court. Rooms was well equipped, but it is dated

I didn't like the fact that had to pay for parking when it was extremely abundant. I found out after the fact when checking in at 12 AM at night that there was a $10 per night for parking. I was a bit put off by this.

The property was very clean, the staff were extremely friendly, breakfast had different food options each day! The rooms were spacious and felt like an apartment away from home. There were lots of restaurants and shops close by, making meal time easy and fun! The property had lots of activities for the kids, from basketball, the pool and access to other sport options. Will definitely stay again, highly recommended.

A group of traveling Little League baseball players took over the pool area along with a amplifier and loud music for the whole evening. Nobody else could go to the pool and the noise went on way past quiet time. Our room was overlooking the pool and at 9:30 at night we had to move rooms. Management did nothing to keep these people quiet I was really disappointed because I have had great luck with other Sonesta hotels

The pool was a total winner - my teens loved it. Hotel is in a great area with lots of shopping and different food options. Very safe, convenient and easy access to freeways. Would prefer hotel doesn't charge additional for parking and was a little better about keeping pool towels stocked, but would come back.

Check in was a breeze! Marc was attentive and helpful. Breakfast was one of the best I've had while traveling. Rotating selection over our 3/4 day stay. Comfortable bed, good water pressure too. While a little far (30ish minutes) from what we came to see & do as a family of three (my own booking issue not the hotel's) it was beautiful, clean and right next door to a Costco! Many food options nearby. Will definitely visit again during our next trips.

The hotel is in a nice and quiet area. The room was larger than we thought it would be, plus the full sized refrigerator, sink and even mini-stovetop and dishwasher and dishes were a bonus. We didn't realize that this is an extended stay hotel with these amenities. The staff were helpful and friendly. We were hoping for a spa or hot tub by the pool, which they didn't have, and the complimentary breakfasts were mostly pre-packaged and warmed up. We found that when we turned off the icemaker in the room, water leaked from the bottom of the refrigerator. Parking on the property was $10 per night, but there was plenty of safe parking on the street. These are minor complaints, and we would stay there again.

Overall was a nice stay. Rooms were a little dusty and pet hair. Little outdated. But the worst of it was that some people staying in hotel decided to have a party with 400 people invited included in that was a DJ. There were people all over destroying property and paying guests like us couldn't even get a parking spot where we had to pay to get. Also had teens running up and down halls banging on doors and throwing ketchup and syrup at doors. We besides several people went to front desk to complain where management said there was nothing they could do and then left for us to have to call police. It was very unprofessional of management how they handled this. I will say the highlight of our stay was the amazing breakfast lady who was absolutely amazing and welcomed us like family.

Room was very worn, very dirty. Walls need paint carpet is filthy. Room smelled like stale alcohol no fresh at all. Couch was so worn it’s discolored that I didn’t even sit on it. Shower curtain hanging off the rod. Towels had stains. The elevator and the hall carpets were disgusting. Elevator broke down during my stay and I was on the 3rd floor, having just had a hip replacement I couldn’t carry my work equipment down the and had to ask someone to help as I had to get to a meeting. I asked for a luggage rack, none available. The clerk asked why I would need one and told to just put luggage on the floor of the closet. All the kitchen ware was mismatched and no ice trays, no ice machine. But they gave me a ziplock baggy of ice. Coffee maker in room was rusted and only given Decaf coffee t vrew. I asked for regular and was told they did gave any regular, but found me 1 pkg. I found silverfish among other bugs and smashed them with a glass for housekeeping to see. I was so shocked with the condition of this hotel. It looks so very nice on the website. Also they charge 10.00 per day to park and it’s not even a private lot. You just pull up Like motel 6. In the morning I went down to breakfast. Only to find the kitchen worker sitting at one of the tables scrolling through her phone and food was cold. The last day, I called for a late checkout around 10:30 Or 11:00 and was told it would be 40.00, Let’s just say I was extremely disappointed on my 3 night stay.

Shower floor/tub floor was dirty. Doors were dirty around handles. Light bulb burned out in bedroom. Breakfast was supposed to be included in daily rate. There was NO BREAKFAST! Kitchen was roped off. Completely closed.

hotel is dirty, linens are mattress are filthy, rooms stinks, smells old and smoky. Linens and towels not well provided. we have to get it from the front desk and service rep was rude handling the towels and linens and mushroom found growin in one of the rooms i booked

The hotel is not like the photos rooms are dirty unfortunately.

We've stayed at this Sonesta Suites before and had a positive experience, but this time was marked by a not fully cleaned room, stained box springs, broken lamp and burned out bulb in the kitchenette area.

Ants in our room. Smelly carpet throughout all the common areas. Would not recommend.

Breakfast was good room was clean

The over all cleanliness of the hotel wasn’t good. The furniture is dirty, looks like it was purchased at the goodwill. The elevator floor was gross, the panel with the buttons was so disgusting I didn’t want to touch it. Curtains in the room were stained, the cabinet doors were dirty and coffee splashed on the wall on the 2nd floor, nobody ever cleaned it the entire week we were there. We will not return.

Staff super nice first of all. But unfortunately we stayed one night and left when we were booked for a week. One of their best rooms they said they had was just not acceptable. Floor was dirty to the point are bare feet were dark brown on bottoms within the first hour. The carpet was ripped in a few spots. The couch we put a sheet on it looked so dirty. A bunch of ripped areas. We got there - no toilet paper no towels. There was a bag of leftover fruit in a bag on the kitchen stool. Went to go to bed at 11 at night and I’m sure the sheets were just made and not changed. Few maybe stains… but not taking chance and also couple of hairs. They did not charge me for the night which was nice of them. I did offer to pay something but they said it’s okay. I think most of the lack of items and cleaning was maid related I know. But the floors are gross and the couch. Needs replacing. To the point I had a shower, dried my feet and put on my new shoes so the dirt on my feet from the floor wouldn’t go onto my soles of my shoes. Bed was super comfy though. Staff was very kind and thoughtful. The lobby etc very clean and looks nice. Breakfast I don’t usually go down but my husband does and having breakfast only 630-830 seems early. Most hotels go to 930 I feel. Overall I would not stay here again until they redo some rooms. Which they acknowledged they need to. Didn’t use pool or gym as I got up at 7 am to tell them we were not staying longer.

This room had levels of disgust that I haven’t seen in a long time. We got two of the two room suites and as we all finally unpacked and were getting ready to climb into bed, I opened the pull out bed and it was disgusting and covered in brown stains. Instead of having my daughter sleep on that I told her that she could sleep with me and then when we went to crawl into my bed, it also had stains on the sheets. It’s 10:30pm and I’m exhausted and now go down to the front office with the pictures of the stains l. The manager on duty apologized and had a solution of giving me a cover and sheet set for the pull out couch. I told him absolutely not would I put my daughter on that stained mattress even with a cover. Gross!! For my bed, it was only the sheets so he said that he would send the sheets up to our room. They brought the sheets up in a bag and just hung the bag on the handle of our door. I changed the sheets and collapsed into bed but still grossed out. Unfortunately this is a hotel that we will officially take off of our list. The building itself was rundown with things peeling off the wall and needing some major renovations. But the basics really should be a clean bed.

So my overall stay was fine, but not great. I had to wait 90 minutes to check in after being promised I'd be able to check in early. They comped my parking which was nice of them. However, the place had a terrible smelling lobby and a scratched up elevator. The room itself had a comfortable bed and good shower. But the refrigerator was very loud most of the time I was there. The ice machine turn off switch was broken so I had to dump the ice out every morning to keep it from overflowing. The couch in the room was in bad condition. The TV was of low quality and the sink in the bathroom filled up with water to half the basin when I brushed my teeth. It was a 2.5 out of 5 stars stay, unfortunately.

Property is aging and in need of updates and repairs. Windows didn’t open properly, ac unit made the carpet wet, paint chipped, shower head terrible. Location was great and breakfast was decent. Room and bath seemed clean.

It was for work, but my rooms AC didn’t work. They had a portable unit in the bedroom area of the suite. Mostly clean, couch was very worn, tvs very old.

The hotel was nice. Larger rooms that were well taken care of. One issue was that our room was by the elevator on the second floor so we were constantly woken up by inconsiderate people talking outside or letting their doors slam. So the walls are paper thin. Aside from that, it was a great stay.

Great location between both the animal park and zoo. Only thing missing was USB ports for charging electronics.

Loved having the full size fridge and kitchenette to make our own lunches. The living room area is separate from the bedrooms which is nice. Beds and pillows were super comfortable, sheets were soft and crisp and clean. Blackout curtains were perfect as it can get very bright. Bath towels were soft and cozy. Bathroom large and clean. Older building so there was some visible general wear in the elevators and main entrance areas but rooms were clean. Staff were friendly and nice. Check in took a while as rooms were not ready when we arrived. Very convenient, walkable to Costco and shopping stores and some restaurants. Kids loved the basketball court and pool. We had a lovely stay!

The free breakfast was good and the room layout was great for our family of 4. The only thing we really didn't like was the furniture in the sitting area of our room. The couch and chair were very worn out and felt unclean. It made sitting in the room very uncomfortable. For this reason, we checked out early and went to another hotel for the rest of our stay.

The bed felt amazing, we had a 2 bedroom suite

Old and outdated hotel. It smelled like mildew or musty. The bed was creaky, and the tv old.

Got a free upgrade to a two bedroom suite. Too bad I was traveling alone. Wasn’t able to take advantage of the extra space.

The front desk staff and the kitchen staff (francesita) were exceptional and made our stay amazing. They were all so friendly and helpful. Thank you for all you do to make the customer feel welcomed and important

Friendly staff; there is a parking charge of $10. My card key didn’t work (twice) so i was given a different room. Bathrooms on check in level had no toilet paper. These two minor issues allowed staff to waive my parking fee. Breakfast was simple (turkey patties/cereal/yogurt/bagel/toast/pancakes)...but good.

The women who checked us in didn’t speak good English and took over 30 minutes to check us in. Didn’t apologize for the inconvenience or even say thank you. Very poor customer service.

Our stay here was great! Really loved the staff. Mark and Miranda in the front desk were really nice and helpful and really accommodating. They helped us with early check-in and a later check out. The cleaning crew was so nice too! Saw her In the hall and she asked if there was anything extra we needed. Everyone was just so helpful and welcoming. Room was clean and comfortable. Will definitely be back!

Tried to check in at 4:00 pm. Line of people including lady in front of me waiting for 1/2 an hour or more. Decided to go have dinner off property and come back. Issues were rooms not cleaned. Poor lady at front desk and ZERO managers on the property. Finally got a room at 11pm. Have tried to get a partial credit for my room based on hours I actually stayed there Except no one answers the phone on the property. Corporate offered me 15,000 frequent stay points. As this was my first time in a long time staying at these properties, why would i join a frequent stay program??? BTW: No towels in the room so i used the bed cover to dry off after a shower in the early am.

This was the worst experience I have ever had trying to check in to a room reserved days prior. Lack of professionalism and employees provided no customer service.

One of the worst experiences you can get in a hotel if not the worst! Reserved a week before the date just to get to the hotel and be told they had no more rooms left. Multiple families had this issue. No available rooms at other Sonesta hotels near by so we had to go out looking for a hotel in the middle of the night with young children!! Still waiting for for my refund!

I used to live in the Poway area, so know the area well. The location of the property is in a tucked away and quiet area. Easy to self-park at the hotel. Plenty of dining options & coffee shops within .5 miles and many more options within 3 miles. Costco is walking distance. The extended stay suite setup was very useful during my stay. The full size fridge and nice desk setup came in handy. Satellite TV and internet functioned well. The only area for improvement was the "Continental buffet breakfast." Coffee & tea were fine. But the food was lukewarm at best on the several occasions when I went down. And you better get there on the early side. If close to the 8:30 AM closing time, the food could be totally depleted and not being restocked up until the closing time advertised. The self-making Pancake maker had even been unplugged early too. Not asking for miracles here, but guests should be able to come down get breakfast during the advertised times and eat in the lounge area or take back to their room to eat while working. One girl in particular seemed to be non attentive to refilling items.

I liked the location ! so close to everything you need. The property is dated its clean and the rooms have the basic things you need. The staff is friendly and accomodating.

The two bedroom suite was perfect for our family vacation. The location was safe, near restaurants and shopping, and close to San Diego Zoo Safari Park. An outdoor pool and grills were available (although we didn't use them). Booking on Hotels.com was easy. Check-in was simple. The staff was kind. And the room was as described, spacious, clean and comfortable. Would stay with Sonesta again.

I like the size of the room. Didn't like the cleanliness of the room main room... couch smelled dirty and stale. The so called free breakfast benefit was very misleading. They only have grab and good food on Sat/Sun and that was a joke. Need to have buffet style on Sat/Sun too or make that known during the booking process.

Breakfast everyday was excellent. Helpful and pleasant everyday for our twelve day stay. Location convenient and easy to find.

No buffet on the weekends , in expedia said buffet every day but once you get to the property they said is only monday thru friday , weekends is grab and go breakfast wich it was horrible breakfast, I choose this place specificacly for the buffet breakfast, also no housekeeping , every one trow their dirty towels and garbage on the hallways by the room door and looks disgusting and dirty to see all that. i will definetly not stay here again or any sonesta hotels.

Breakfast was not really great. Fried eggs as hard as hockey pucks. Toilet in room barely flushed.

This was a great place to stay for the price. The breakfast in the morning was really good.❣️ my grandchildren, especially light having pancakes and sausage before we headed out for the days activities. Nothing like starting with a full belly.😍 Thank you, Theresa Anderson

Breakfast limited. Not enough food for the people that were there and not enough space to eat.

The property is beautiful itself , but run down and I had a hotel suite room And Paid over $300 per night but there were no hand towels, bath towels or wash cloths in the bathrooms . The kitchen refrigerator smelled bad and was dirty. Stove as barely big enough to cook on and the Tolit kept trying to clog up. Plus being Disabled made it very difficult due to only one elevator. My room was at the second floor and at the opposite end of the hotel where the elevator was located. But they had some good qualities, like the bed was supper comfortable, and it was nice having a tv in every room even though it was not needed. The suite was huge but both bathrooms were in poor condition and there were soap and shampoo dispensers but they were empty. The staff was extremely professional and very courteous and the morning free breakfast was nice and good food options. But they didn’t have fresh water which was inconvenient, because the choices were coffee tea or juice . I got in on Expedia so I felt it was a bit overpriced. Oh and also $10 a night for parking which was unessasery.
