Sleep Inn & Suites Newport News City Center Area

We selected the property for the location, amenities, pool, online photos, clear price spelled out, fridge & microwave and breakfast. When I checked in, the Orbitz price information was different than the hotel. We forgot our toiletries. The tiny pack of toothpaste wasn’t useable since the front desk was out of tooth paste. The deodorant looked like small chapstick. The bathroom was out of conditioner and low on shampoo. There were two dirty towels. The pool was too cold to enjoy. The toiled flooded. The employee took a quick look. He suggested that I come downstairs to get a plunger to take care of the toilet since he was busy. I suggested he put me on the payroll. He got the plunger. He told us we were switching rooms at 10:50pm. The new room had a door that stuck. I didn’t want to leave a review. It was the only way to share feedback.

Booked for visiting friends. Indoor pool was a nice feature in March when it was still cooler in the evenings. Breakfast was waffles which we don't eat due to allergies. Bed was comfortable and location was quiet. Plenty of parking available.

The pool room and pool was ice cold. You couldn't even stand to be in the pool area. There were strange cars coming around the hotel through the night, making circles around the hotel then parking next to a car and leaving quick. The breakfast was the saddest breakfast I have ever seen. The shower water didn't get hot. The heat made a terrible noise. There were hardly any workers in the building. Very poor experience.

The property needs a lot of upkeep. My room door didn’t close properly, the hallways & stairwell were not clean, the continental breakfast was almost non-existent and poorly stocked. I probably would not stay here again. The fitness room was very neglected too.

Dirty, dirty, dirty. We wouldn't even walk around our room with out shoes on. Made a walk way out of towels to avoid stepping on the floor. When we picked the towels up, they were black from where we stepped. The counter in the bathroom was slanted down so nothing stayed on the counter without rolling off. Oh, and the pool!! They're was a film on the top of it with patches like you would see on a pond!! I though i was going to get an ear or skin infection just by stepping into the room, so i viewed it from the window. Staff was friendly though. No complaints there.

Could have stayed at a Red Roof INN. Can't believe Choice Hotels would put their name on such a place. I was on a business trip for 2 weeks and pre paid for the hotel and so I was stuck staying there. The best thing was the price. Minimal everything, service of room, breakfast LOL, workout room with broken equipment and Television. Shame on me for trying to save some business expense, you get what you pay for.

Check in was a breeze. The gentleman that checked me in was kind and informative. The pool was warm. The room was exactly as the photos. Clean, quiet facility. I would definitely recommend.

The pool didn’t look clean. The towels and wash cloths were dingy. The covers and sheets were stained. It took an hour to get help with the tv. The location worked for me but I wouldn’t book again.

We were disappointed that the heater on the indoor pool was broken! We specifically wanted a heated pool. Also Fyi breakfast was very minimal. Other than that we we're satisfied.

I really wanted to like this property. Checkin was efficient and friendly. The room was clean and smelled new, but that is where my positives end. The room seems newly refurbished, yet there was a soft crackly static sound from the fire-alarm randomly throughout our stay. Not enough to alarm but enough to annoy. I booked this because it had a nice indoor pool, but it’s only nice if it’s heated and clean. My daughter slipped on the tiles around (she’s fine) but it was absolutely freezing. The final straw was the breakfast area. When we got there it was filthy and sparse. The waffle machine and >one< apple were available. No toast/bagels/muffins. Cereal was stale. When the person came to refill he brought more apples and was touching the food after touching the trash without washing their hands. The syrup was sour. We disgustedly left and got breakfast elsewhere. We definitely won’t be coming back

Dirty towels and floor.

Most of the previous reviews seemed fair and decent, so we booked to stay a weekend while we were in town for an event. Upon entering the lobby, I was already disappointed. It was hot and clammy and smelled musty. The check in process was so, however, the staff was friendly. Our room was filthy. I wasn't comfortable walking around barefoot. It didn't seem as if the floors were even vacuumed as we found spider carcasses around. The towels were stained and stiff and when we asked for fresh towels on our second day, we were told no because they had none cleaned. The comforter smelled of old, musty laundry that had been left in an old washing machine. Ot was a disappointing stay, and we only stayed because of the convenient location and that the property was *just* barely clean enough to stay and avoid having to find another hotel and lose out on money. Based on my stay, I wouldn't recommend for a family. Plan to stay here if you need a mediocre place to sleep.

Upon checking in I noticed the bedding in our room looked dirty. There was human fecal matter on the sheets as well as the mattress cover. I called the front desk and they did send someone to change the bedding immediately. The toilet was broken and the room was damp with a strange smell my guess is mold because every morning we woke up feeling extremely congested. Hotel policy is non refundable no exceptions so we just chose to suck it up but we will never be returning to this hotel.

It was fine for one night I don’t know if I’d stay any longer than that. Sheets and towels were stained and had a tacky/sticky feeling that made it hard to sleep. Bed was EXTREMELY loud metal. Weird smell in hallway I’m guessing from smoking rooms. No bugs and the pool looked fine but didn’t use it.

The hotel lobby area and the area near the elevator smells like weed. The floors were wet a lot of the time in the hall leading to the elevators because people using the indoor pool were constantly tracking back in forth in that area. When I called the front desk from my room either I got someone who didn’t speak English well and didn’t understand me or they didn’t answer the phone at all. I would not stay there again. Pictures were deceiving.

VERY misleading. This hotel states that they have luxury bedding, down comforters, Egyptian cotton sheets, and a pillow menu. NONE of these are offered. BEWARE if you get a king suite with sofa bed, the sofa bed DOES NOT include ANY BLANKETS OR PILLOWS, only a sheet. My children traveled with us and were cold the entire night. We were told to speak with Josh the manager and he stated “there are no blankets available or offered for the pull out beds”. We had to go to Walmart to purchase blankets, pillows, and tooth brushes/tooth paste (because we forgot these) even though the website states that these are available upon request. The pool was foamy and tiles are extremely slippery or lifted near the lounge chairs, be very careful. Also NO BUFFET BREAKFAST! Continental at best. Waffle maker with no batter. You had to choose between 3 apples or stale cereal. No buffet as advertised online. In addition to all of this, EVERY SINGLE LINEN was dirty or stained, towels, rags, pillow cases, etc. and we found dried up roach/bug body parts on 3 linens (we rented two rooms). Each time they “replaced” the sheets, there were bug/roach exoskeleton on the sheets. They just throw the bedding on the concrete floors in the laundry rooms and the floors are gross in there. I contacted the hotel and Orbitz to at least return the money that was spent at Walmart to supply our own bedding, hygiene products, and breakfast since all of these were supposed to be available through this hotel. Disappointed

The hotel was nice and the staff friendly, however the noise level was high. The walls are thin and it was difficult to sleep. I suggest getting a room in the top floor.

Was a great location for us to stay over night before traveling back home after a wedding in the area. Love everything about the room except the metal under the bed that was a little noisy when turning over and the boom when you hit it with your foot was super loud. Other wise was just right in every way.

Most comfortable hotel bed I have EVER slept in! place was clean. Breakfast offering had a waffle maker but the rest of the offerings were pretty weak. Bathroom door was poorly repaired from a 10" square hole. Bathroom sink was cracked

We were pleasantly surprised that we had a great experience. Clean room, comfortable bed and iron/ironing board. The toilet was lower than a standard, but it did the job. Definitely would stay and recommend!

The hotel was nice. There was a disconnect due to a language barrier when checking in. It was difficult to understand that I was being charged a deposit at time of checking and what it was for. This inability to understand each other's questions became an irritation. The room was clean and spacious. The water pressure from the shower was horrible. Additionally, there is a metal bed skirt around the metal frame of the bed. There also appeared to be metal "planks" under the mattress that didn't seem to be tightly fastened. This caused every movement on the bed to create a metal to metal clanking and vibration sound, which was quite disturbing.

the bed frame was metal and made this awful clanging sound if you hit it or say down too hard; definitely not a good choice if you’re gonna be having sex. the shower/tub was not super clean and the drain kept backing up due to some sort of build up, which was pretty gross. not very many places to put trash. walls were kinda thin so you could hear your neighbors, you can also hear people walking above you.

Overall it was a decent hotel, the only thing that was bad was the WiFi but other than that it was a 8/10 .

Decent room, friendly staff and was very quiet.

Concierge was often passive aggressive and/or not reasonably accommadating to simple request like changing a blown lamp light bulb or non working power strip. Please improve personal attitude with customers. Also the "continental breakfast" items were limited and not fresh.

I arrived a little early and was told that I could check in because my room was ready. Then I was told that I needed to pay an early check-in fee which I declined so I left and came back later. I checked into my room got everything out of my bags, went to get into bed and noticed that the sheets were completely stained and disgusting. I then had to walk downstairs because the phone in the room did not work. They changed my room and when I got to my new room, the towels were stained and dirty. Each day that I was there my room key was deactivated and I had to keep going downstairs to have it reactivated. Staff is rude and unhelpful.

The rooms and the facility were clean enough and the hotel was quiet, however, we only saw one employee the entire weekend. I got the feeling they were severely understaffed. The only issue I had with the cleanliness of the property is that there was a chicken bone on the ground right in front of the door leading into the main lobby. It stayed there the entire weekend. Regarding our room, the security latch was broken and the smoke detector was hanging from wires in the ceiling. Although we notified the front desk employee, he said he would mention it to the manager. Also, all the appliances were unplugged. We didn’t realize this until we opened the mini fridge to put something in it. So we had to plug them all in - microwave, fridge, and lamp. The TV was plugged in and was already on when we came to our room. Breakfast, which was included, was just waffles, cold cereal, coffee, and juice. I say “just” because we have stayed at another Sleep Inn and the breakfast provided was more extensive. Again, there were no employees, except the front desk person. It is a small thing but the employees we did see were in street clothes, not the uniforms you expect from a chain hotel. We will probably stay at a Sleep Inn again, but probably not this one.

Poorly managed property: No one at the front desk. The front desk employee's children running around the lobby. The breakfast area was filthy and had nothing but cereal and a waffle. The window would not latch (first floor) so anyone could open it from the outside. Paid in advance but was charged hidden fees upon check in

I booked a 2 night stay. When we got there on the walk to the room I saw a tore up Mt. Dew can on the floor in front of the vending machine. It was there still when we checked out. When we first got there we weren't there long and left out. When we got back we tried to turn watch TV but it wasn't working. I picked up the phone up to call the front desk only for the phone not to work so I walked down to there and nobody was there but there was a sign on the counter with a phone number so I called it. I was standing there listening to the phone ring but nobody was answering. We ended up having to watch TV on our phones. The next day I was able to get someone to fix both the phone and the TV but when I asked what sort of compensation i would receive for the inconvenience I was told nothing. I do not recommend.

Great staff, bed/pillows comfortable, clean & close to many restaurants

A nice place to rest. Close to interstate and shopping and restaurants. A small quick breakfast.

Front desk staff were friendly. Room was adequately cleaned ...at first glance. Fresh bedding and no dust on surfaces, room had only mild signs of wear and tear. After being there a minute you start to notice the other things. Primarily, the floors and baseboards need scrubbed down. Need better room servicing. Two people using the same (3) damp bath towels and only 2 hand towels 4 days in a row- was not sufficient. Would prefer to have more towels or have them changed out during the stay. We noticed some people put bags of trash outside the door of their room (as if their is some magic trash fairy). Return 6-8 hours later... trash still sitting there. Hallways and elevator are stuffy and stink like cigarettes and weed. Otherwise, the grounds were clean, we found parking every time we arrived. The area is conveniently located close to downtown areas, quick hwy access and close to the places we needed to go.

I recently stayed at the Sleep Inn and Suites and had a wonderfully quiet and relaxing experience. The hotel is nestled in a secluded area, which made for a peaceful and undisturbed stay. The deluxe room with the pullout couch was incredibly spacious, providing ample room to move around and unwind. The hardwood floors added a luxurious feel to the space, making it even more enjoyable. The continental breakfast was a great start to the day, offering your choice of coffee, a variety of teas cereal of your choice yogurt waffles made the order and your pic of apple juice, orange juice, or cranberry juice. The only downside was that the elevators were not working during my stay, which was a bit inconvenient. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a tranquil and comfortable stay.

The breakfast has very tasty juices, milk, cereal and only one waffle maker (which leads to long lines). I think if they had another option like bread or cake it would be a 10. Good hotel and good value for money. The cleanliness was ok but could be improved. I liked the service and the location. Yes, I would stay here again.

It was very nice aside from the breakfast would have liked more choices and bigger cups for the orange juice also there was only one waffle maker and a gentleman was making breakfast for the whole family so I only had a cup of coffee

We really enjoyed our stay here. The only thing that could have been a little better was the breakfast they only offered waffles, cereal and yogurt. Even with that being said Id definitely stay here again.

Terrible. The tv didn’t work properly, the room was cold, the bathroom sink didn’t drain and They advertise a free breakfast, but we’re out of everything at 8:30 in the morning.

The staff was super friendly and the room itself wasn't bad. It could been cleaner especially the floor, but other than that the room was great. The breakfast was very limited. I wouldn't even call a breakfast is literally just coffee and a machine of waffle. I would recommend the hotel staff either add more options for the breakfast or dont list as "free breakfast" necause that wasnt it. Also, the rooms are NOT soundproof. You can hear everything for the room and the hotel doesn't seem to enforce silent times.

Very comfortable bed. breakfast was lame. Orange juice machine has been broken for a month. Waffle maker works but the batter tasted very bad to me.

It was tucked back not much traffic. Breakfast was horrible 2 cereal options only and waffle maker 1 juice option and coffe that was the worst breakfast offering of all the places I’ve ever stayed
